This book is one pilot's illuminating record of his experiences, linking all the aspects of flight that have, in turn, exhilarated, frightened, repulsed and delighted him. Combining his experiences as an owner and pilot of a Beechcraft Staggerwing with his lauded writing gifts (Guggenheim Fellowship, '66) makes this an immensely enjoyable read.
"...flight can be beauty and peace and provide insight into the patterns of human affairs, both personal and public, but it is first and last, and probably most important, a vehicle for self-discovery..." Tom Mayer is both a seasoned pilot and a talented writer, and his stories are wonderful machines for viewing and experiencing the world of flight.
A short and charming memoir filled with romance for flying old machines. A lot of reminiscing of 'the way it used to be'. The book is full of airplane jargon which I didn't understand but I was able to grasp the sentiment of each story. I enjoyed the chapter about Salva most of all—a guy who can really claim that flying is his life. A great peek into what it's like to pilot these smaller birds.
