While reading 1776 by David McCullough it didn't seem possible the patriots could win the Revolutionary War. Curt Johnson's book shows how the Americans won. One of the interesting parts of the Revolution occurred in the winter of 1777/78 when the fighting was called off. General Howe (British) "was quartered comfortably in Philly with his mistress Betsey Loring, and they presided over a lively social season. Other officers enjoyed the time of their lives squiring beautiful Tory maidens to an endless round of galas, fetes, balls, and other fun. Washington's army (American) was at Valley Forge and food was scare -- the army was on the brink of starvation. Clothing shortages caused the Continental army to suffer from exposure or actually freeze to death." The good news for the Americans was the men learned how to be organized military units from Baron Friedrich von Steuben and in late March 1778, the French signed a treaty of alliance with the patriots. The last battle in the book was Yorktown which pretty much ended the military fighting leading to the peace treaty. I am battle weary and truly believe those who say, "Make love, not war."
