One is always wary of anthologies with multiple authors. However, this book has such an illustrious conglomeration of authors that it just cannot cease to be uniformly interesting. And oops, the multiple ways and environments where embarrassment and the corresponding humour, in hindsight, has to be read here to be believed. Every story has us roaring away in laughter even if sad at first sight.
Embarrassed, shocked, taken aback, astonished or just slipped and fell. The other side of the coin is humour misplaced, enjoyable on hindsight, like in language accents, peculiarities and idiosyncrasies. Ever heard "slept and fell in Basanth Bihar in the Bharatiya Bidya Baboon on campus"?
The emotion in trying to decipher "my son jobbing in bloody boshtok", the complete astonishment in dealing with English spoken by the Chinese or the Scotsman. Welsh is even.more mysterious though like a symphony. And Juvenile from the west indies and so rhythmic.
Or remorse for having guillotined cancerous organs to the basket or the misdemeanours of salad days that led to this? The embarrassment of having created a "hell is empty and all the devils are here" environment a la Shakespeare's "Tempest".
Decent well-dressed sheep in wolf's clothing; the dilapidated, indigent faint souls past corporal toil being the epitome of honest and safe companions. All that glitters is not gold. The embarrassments and the humour behind publishers taking authors for a ride. The authors pretend they know not what the ride is about.
The bewilderingly incongruous situations that British visitors to Indian women's home is another area of embarrassment and humour making the comedy of errors of Shakespearean vintage look.like old hat.
Colleagues and their spouses have, since the beginning of time, been major contributors to the innumerable embarrassing situations both at work and in the home. And tyrannical women and harried husbands being the butt of blood relations playing the broadcasting game is just an extension. These situations call for a double-oop. So how can this book not touch upon it?
And when the elders drown in their suspicion of one another, the college students are engrossed in their multifarious pranks not only in the classroom but in NCC or social service camps
This and more hiding in the pages of the book entitled "Oops! "
