After a decade long war, witches have been obliterated, or so the world thinks. A precarious peace settles and, for the small town of Margaret River, life returns to normal, but for Roo, the hard work is just beginning.
Roo works at the local bar, is a little facetious and can’t wait to high-tail it out of there to keep her powers secret. She’s not certain where they came from but the last thing she wants is to be burned at the stake. Hiding in plain sight seems to work until Cash, a darkly handsome hunter, arrives with disaster in his wake. Witches aren’t defeated, only hidden, and there’s one gunning for Roo and her family. The recent war only touched the surface of the preternatural world and with Cash’s help, Roo learns there are worse things that go bump in the night... and she might be one of them.
Soon she must make a choice—risk exposure to save her loved ones, or remain hidden and safe. But sometimes safe isn’t an option. Sometimes safe is a never-ending game.
Lana lives in Perth, Western Australia and loves writing Paranormal/ Fantasy and Sci-fi Romance. When she’s not writing, you’ll find her creating art and designing book covers. She also fights evil by moonlight, wins love by daylight and never runs from a real fight.
Soul Thing is book one in The Game of Gods series by Lana Pechercyzk. Everything that happens in this story is based around witches, gods, and a game they are playing.
Soul Thing had some things I like and some things not so much. It was interesting, a bit confusing, and I’m a bit conflicted on how I feel about Soul Thing.
The story starts off a little slow, but then it picks up. The action is quick and we learning a lot about Roo and this world that has opened up to her. We get a lot of information thrown at us and it became a bit overwhelming to me.
From what I understand the humans where fighting a war with witches. They did a purge, which is burning witches at the stake, and so they thought the witches where gone for good. But after a few years we learn it didn’t work and now the governments of the world have signed a peace treaty with witches. Bedsides the witches their is a deeper plot/game happening.
Unfortunately for the female population the world has gone back into the dark ages where women no longer have rights and the men in their life controls everything. Who they marry, where they work, etc.. Besides all that the women are collared in a way, which makes me think of slavery. No rights for women. I’m a little upset with this plot direction in the story. These new laws aren’t going to stop the bad witches from taking over a human body and kicking out the soul. The witches can do magic and so I don’t understand why the government has gone back to the dark ages with women.
Roo is an interesting character. I liked her. Her life gets turned upside down, but she doesn’t wallow in self pity. She tries to find answers as to what she is, what she can do, and what her part in this game might be. Their is also a possible lover interest in Cash, but for now that is on the sidelines until we learning more. Theirs a lot of mystery surrounding these characters that needs to be sorted out.
As the story goes we learn that their is a deeper game happening that most humans don’t know about. The gods and their people are playing this game. I’m not sure really what they’re playing for. The game concept is wired and bit confusing.
The author did a nice job, but I feel like she may have over thunk things. I’m bit confused with a lot of the things introduced to us. As for Soul Thing it was an all right read, but it didn’t leave me with the feeling of wanting to continue on.

Soul Thing has some things going for it, and some not so much. I liked the main character of La Roux (or Roo), who is a sassy, strong, independent young woman that has had some hard knocks in life so far. The other characters were interesting as well, especially Kitty, Tommy and Cash, but the setting of witch hunts, killing off half the female population, all the restrictions on women’s lives, and then some strange game with Gods, Players, Watchers, etc. was just too confusing and strange. I struggled to finish the book but I hung in there because I was interested in seeing how it all turned out. Not really satisfied with the conclusion, still a bit confusing and not necessarily a happy ending, so I don’t think I’ll be reading the rest of the series.
The best tip I can give you is, if you are going to leave a book review, do so as soon as you have finished the book. I’m struggling with this review now, because I was impatient ! I enjoyed this book so much I continued reading the series, I’m now half way through book.4. Called “Playing God” So it’s now hard to remember what happened in which book 😂 I don’t like leaving spoilers, So I will just say , You will not be disappointed with this series... it has kept me glued to the pages, unable to resist the temptation of picking it up, every chance I had throughout the day at every opportunity I could get. Most new series have a slow burn in the beginning, while it world builds and introduces you to the characters and storyline, Not Soul thing ! Yes the first few pages did, but then everything exploded ! There was Witches, Magic, Mythology and Gods, all entwined in a story that gives you suspense, mystery, trauma, Heartbreak along with frightful and Inconceivable situations. Book.1. certainly hits the ground running. The main female lead Roo, has a funny & sassy personality that gives light hearted and funny moments throughout the book, however she is just a young woman who goes from gently getting on with, loving her friends, job and simplistic but hard life, to fighting for her own life, and the life of her friends. Everything she thought she knew gets blown out of the water. She is threatened, scared and dangerous. Now she needs the guy she thought was cute, moody and mysterious to help her survive and uncover the truths buried under eons of years of history. The emotions of these characters feel so realistic, they have you sat on the edge of your seat, they make tears fall and your heart swell and thump. The storyline is well defined, and seamlessly continues from each book to the next, it’s like you have just turned the page. This is my first experience reading anything by Lana Pecherczyk. I have found an author who has acumen and aptitude for originality in her storylines and one who can describe and make you feel. To me that is a winning combination. Don’t miss this series, if possible it gets better with each book as the storyline transcends, turning in opposite directions and sharply contracts on its axis
I'm normally a romance junkie who loves a paranormal twist so I wasn't sure how I was going to feel about my first urban fantasy read but I got 3 chapters in and realized I was hooked. Lana builds a clever, engaging world that just begs to be explored further. Loved the heroes, loved the villains, loved the independent and gutsy Roo, loved cheeky Marc, and definitely loved Cash - just my kind of lead male character, strong and flawed but so enticing. Very clever blend of religion and mythology and fantasy all coming together without a political agenda and then there's snippets of romance - I can't wait to see how that plays out over the series. I was initially sent this for review but loved it so much I bought another copy. I can't wait for the next book.
Wow! It's an amazing story. I loved it so much and can't wait to read more of this series. It's a fantasy about the world and 'players' who need to play the 'game' which was created by the gods. It's all about souls and how they stay on Earth. Story is quite complicated so it demands reader's full attention, which was no hardship for me. It had me engrossed right from the beginning and it was quite difficult for me to put it down once I started reading. Story flows flawlessly and characters are all well-written. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and would recommend to anyone who enjoys a good fantasy with lots of twists and turns.
The characters leapt into action quickly and were very intriguing. There is still a ton of mystery surrounding these characters. The interactions between each character still has me wondering exactly how everything will play out. This author put a lot of work and planning into setting up this storyline. It took me a bit longer to make it through this book but only because of life demands. All in all I thought the set up for this series is good just don’t know the projected length of series to find out some answers. This review has been voluntarily written.
Picked this up to fill in a the "debut book by favorite author" bingo square and Idk why I haven't read it before now! This book had a refreshing plot and it kept me engaged the entire time. I hate the title though, and I think the word "thing" should be replaced every time its used in this book with a better descriptive word, thank my English teachers from childhood for this. Great story and I'm excited to continue with the Novella next!
This is the first time I read anything from Lana Pecherczyk. I had no idea what to expect when I agreed to read this book. When I started reading it I fell in love with the characters and how the story was written. By the end of the book I was wanting to read more of this series loved it.
I voluntarily read and reviewed this complimentary copy.
Sorry, I cannot say a good thing about this book. I got to Chapter 5 and still had no idea what the plot (if there was one) was about. I didn't care for the spitting, scratching, hair pulling, escaping, drowning, and killings described. It read more like a how to witches torture session than a story. Not my type of reading for the purpose of enjoyment.
I recieved this book for free and voluntarily reviewed. I really enjoyed the book. The characters were great, love the interaction between them and the storyline was intriguing. I had fun reading this story.
The game concept is weird and a bit confusing. The characters are slowly taking on dimension. Not sure if I'm going to keep reading this series. The preview on The Devil Inside from Cash and Marc point of view is smoother somehow.
Nothing like throwing mythology, witchcraft, and alien lifeforms into a blender to create an interesting story! Oh yeah, don't forget the amnesia and super powers... wouldn't be the same without them. Definitely keeps you reading to see what's going to happen next.
I'm in a love hate relationship with the world the author has chosen for her incredibly well written characters. This is a fantastic read. I will post a full review on my blog. @hernoseinabook on Instagram.
So after reading other books from lana I found this one a little slow to begin with. But once got over the herdle I found it to be really enjoyable. Be interesting to see how Roo plays out in the next books of the season.
I love this & I can't wait for more. I will be also leaving a review on Goodreads @ Amazon. And letting everyone know about it. So i gave it a 5 Stars.
This book really drew me in right from the first page. Roo and Cash have great chemistry and I love the banter between them. There is a fantastic supporting cast, Kitty, Alvin, Tommy and especially Marc. Action packed, non stop, with lots of twists and turns, the story kept me guessing. A fantastically re-imagined Australia is the backdrop and it makes me wonder... Are witches real? The only bad thing is that I have to wait for the next book to get all the answers!
