Charles Causey

Charles Causey's family comes from Hangingdog, North Carolina, a quaint community hidden deep inside the Smoky Mountains. As a boy he ran through lush, green fields alongside his grandfather’s Black Angus cows and swam in the cool creeks and lakes - always with a wary eye out for water moccasins. The tales he heard down those beautifully wooded country roads formed in him a love for people, the outdoors, and good stories, usually told by World War II veterans while rocking together on their front porches. Now Charles has the privilege to serve veterans every day as a military chaplain stationed in Washington D.C. He is married and has four children. His website is: causeybooks.com.

Words and Deeds: Becoming a Man of Courageous Integrity by Charles Causey (an army chaplain and Bronze Star recipient) explores the aspects of integrity as represented by our words and our deeds. The author uses examples from war stories to look at how alignment of our words with our deeds contributes to the strength of our integrity and inspires us to do better. He presents his definitions of the Four Stages of Manhood: Sentry, Salesman, Scout, and Statesman and goes through many examples of each and how they apply to each of us in understanding who we are. The author includes a personal inventory so that readers can establish where they fit in the Four Stages of Manhood and to help figure out a plan to get to where you want to be. Although the author seems focused on men and uses examples from the military, I would think the concepts and personal inventory apply equally for women as well. I found this book to be interesting and thought-provoking and generally recommendable.

Q & A-

- What did you like about the book and why? It shares the authors heart in a way that tells the reader who he is and what he is about. I feel like the truth and stories in the book may humble and help most people.

- What did you not like about the book and why? My only negative from reading this is that not everyone is going to be able to understand the faith based path that the author wants to outline. For the most part if you believe in God and want to change, this is a nice resource, but may not be the only answer.

- What did you learn? There are so many faces of war and people, so finding the integrity and strength will not be the same for every person that reads this and the book can be interpreted however the reader decides will best suit them.

- To whom would you recommend this book and why? Well it is written for men, I would add that possible adult ages or older mat connect more, simply because of the settings and possible links to their own past.

The debate about words versus deeds and vice versa has been around for a long time. Sadly, the debate misses the point. Alignment of both is where integrity is accomplished. The latest book from NavPress brings this topic into clearer focus.

Words and Deeds: Becoming A Man of Courageous Integrity by Charles Causey, Army chaplain and recipient of a Bronze Star, highlights a subject needed by any and all men. Too often a focus on deeds is common for men without discerning the importance of words and how they align and intersect in the context of their relationships, stress, teamwork, and leadership. Words and deeds are both important and most important of all is that they match

Interesting ideas. The author is a military chaplain and so uses a number of examples from the lives of military personnel and others to share his matrix of 4 stages of manhood: sentry, salesman, scout, and statesman. It also includes a single session discussion guide and a six-week bible study guide to use in small groups. He also includes an inventory for each reader and three of his friends / associates / co-workers to fill out and then see where the reader see themselves and where their friends see them in relation to the 4 stages of manhood.

Hey, just in time for Father’s Day! Or maybe a son at a graduation of any sort…at any rate, what a fabulous book for men. Our culture is in serious trouble, and this book is a timely mentor- an accountability partner, as I see it. A lack of character and integrity in general is hurting us as a nation, but this book offers encouragement, inspiration, and a challenge for men of all ages and stages.

Charles Causey, a recipient of the Bronze Star for his military service in Iraq, seeks to help men find balance between their words and deeds in his important book, Words And Deeds.

War stories, a call to action, and real significance, these are things that appeal to men. And aren’t we glad of it? I know I am. Words And Deeds delivers an exciting call to arms for men who want to live godly lives of integrity. If their words and deeds match, if they are serious about being men of outstanding character and living out their beliefs, they should know Charles Causey is serious about pointing the way.

In a nation of fatherless men, we need more men like Charles Causey, and the hope and prayer is that as more men develop into courageous men of integrity and mentor others, there can be less fatherless children, husbandless wives, and more real-life heroes. This is my take-away, and maybe I’m reading more into it than was meant, but as a woman, wife, and mother, and especially as a fatherless child, I say that a battle cry for men to more integrity can only improve our entire society.

Excellent book. Really. Inside there are some interesting ideas the author put together to help guys take it seriously, and get forward motion:

I was honored by receiving a copy of this book from the author and being asked to participate along with roughly 30 other men in an on-line discussion of the book as we worked our way through it.

Causey covers the importance of both words and deeds in men's lives. He sprinkles in some great stories along the way which reinforce his thoughts. There is even a diagnostic evaluation you do of yourself to find out where you are at in your use of words and deeds in your life. Through the test I found out I am Sentry who has a long ways to go to become a Statesman. Causey doesn't just leave you there though. He sets out what you need to do to work to become a Statesman. He also encourages you to have three others evaluate you to see if there is a gap from the way others see you and how you perceive yourself.

I have recommended this book to my men's Bible study group. We can all use more integrity.

This book was not only instructional and inspirational, but also introspective. There is a chapter where the reader honestly examine himself, which in turn points him to areas he himself can improve himself. There is also an online tool for the reader to select three friends to take the same survey to get a more objective profile of himself.

This book is highly recommended and should even be required reading by all men striving to be their best self, husband and father. Words and Deeds Becoming a Man of Courageous Integrity by Charles Causey
