Michael Freeman is a professional photographer and author. He wrote more than 100 book titles. He was born in England in 1945, took a Masters in geography at Brasenose College, Oxford University, and then worked in advertising in London for six years. He made the break from there in 1971 to travel up the Amazon with two secondhand cameras, and when Time-Life used many of the pictures extensively in the Amazon volume of their World's Wild Places series, including the cover, they encouraged him to begin a full-time photographic career.

Since then, working for editorial clients that include all the world's major magazines, and notably the Smithsonian Magazine (with which he has had a 30-year association, shooting more than 40 stories), Freeman's reputation has resulted in more than 100 books published. Of these, he is author as well as photographer, and they include more than 40 books on the practice of photography - for this photographic educational work he was awarded the Prix Louis Philippe Clerc by the French Ministry of Culture. He is also responsible for the distance-learning courses on photography at the UK's Open College of the Arts.

This is a book about how to think about taking digital photos so that you can be a better photographer. There is a lot of information in the book about how to apply design principles to photography, how to use focus and lighting to create better images, and how editing changes digital photographs. Throughout the book lists of search terms are included in order to point the reader to additional information available on the internet. The discussion is not limited to digital photography, the author also talks about older methods of taking and processing pictures and explains how they connect to digital photography.

The book does not provide any information on camera settings or much information on how different types of cameras and lenses might influence specific pictures.

This helped explain a number of intent and stylistic concepts that I've read about in other books but never quite understood before. It has given me a lot more tools to consider using on future photographic outings. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series!

This book is very philosophical. It gets you thinking about themes that border objectivity and subjectivity and that show up in photography. Author is very knowledgeable on the art, and his experience shows on how he explains concepts, history of photography and trends, and examples. Great and diverse photo examples, sometimes with simplified diagrams and/or small variations of the same scene to demonstrate the theory.

This book does not teach about technical knowledge (exposure, focal length, types of cameras, etc.). It’s more focused on how to create feelings and emotional impact with your photos. Overall, I think the knowledge earned from this book is subtler but deeper.
