Beautiful Hope: Finding Hope Everyday in a Broken World

Rate this book
We live in a culture that produces hopelessness with astounding consistency. When everything seems chaotic and we are faced with a multitude of negative realities, we might be tempted to say that nothing makes sense anymore. But we are not alone—God walks with us and his presence fills us with hope. Because of this we are able to smile in the midst of our di culties. Despair is defeated because God is with us. Hope does not disappoint!

What gives you hope? What are your hopes and dreams—for yourself, your children, your church, your community, your nation? What sustains that hope and turns those dreams into reality? What are some of the unique ways you bring hope to people in your life? The contributors featured in Beautiful Hope offer intensely personal answers to these questions. Some of them are well-known authors and speakers, but many are ordinary Catholics dealing with everyday life with all its challenges and problems, just like you. Their stories are meant to spark your own exploration of hope and increase its abundance in your life.

Today many are worried about the future and what it holds. Many are concerned about the future of our Church. If we are to become those who can shine the light of faith into the darkness of our world, things must change. We need an infusion of hope so we can see more clearly and live boldly as children of God.

Matthew Kelly is a best-selling author, speaker, thought leader, entrepreneur, consultant, spiritual leader, and innovator.

Born in Sydney, Australia, he began speaking and writing in his late teens while he was attending business school. Since that time, 5 million people have attended his seminars and presentations in more than 50 countries.

Today, Kelly is an internationally acclaimed speaker, author, and business consultant. His books have been published in more than 30 languages, have appeared on The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and USA Today bestseller lists, and have sold more than 50 million copies.

Hope Does Not Disappoint

Nor does this book!!

Seventeen people have written treatises on hope and there is a gem in each one.

Each story describes a personal experience of hope followed by a FOCUS and a REFLECTION or call to ACTION.

My takeaways:

Those with hope are willing to act. Those without hope are content to wish.

Proximate hopes are connected to our everyday desires and dreams. Ultimate hope is a theological virtue and is directly connected to the meaning of our life.

I’ve gone to church my whole life, and it never occurred to me to wonder how much my parish could accomplish if we helped pick up the crosses of those in need right in front of us.

The name Nadia is Polish for “hope.”

Hope is the theological virtue that enables us to keep our eyes on heaven—even during those times when our sufferings and trials make our lives here on earth seem like a living hell.

If God can make a saint out of an ordinary man like Padre Pio, he can do the same thing with you and me.

Final thought:

I am in my twilight years having every earthly thing I want. As a Catholic, I am bolstered by the thoughts of this book. My hopes are for spiritual outcomes, not earthly ones.

Almost two years ago I read and reviewed Beautiful Mercy, a different anthology edited by Matthew Kelly. It was a transformative read, and has sparked a renewal in my reading of Catholic books, and taking my faith to a next level. It was a book that stayed with me for weeks. And now two years later the book is still having an impact on my thoughts, my actions and my striving to become the best version of myself. So when I found out that there was a new volume out I grabbed it the day I became aware of it being available and have devoured it. The sections in this book are:

Prelude By Matthew Kelly
Introduction: Never Lose Hope By Pope Francis
Part One: Choosing Hope
A Powerful Force
The Triumph Of Hope
Expect The Impossible
A Father's Hope
The Path Of Hope
Part Two: Hope In The Church
This Little Light Of Mine
Live Differently Cardinal
If It All Depends On Me
Answering The Call
Part Three: Hope In Action
A God Of Miracles
Soul Searching
Nadia
An Anniversary To Remember
Ordinary Grace
Part Four: Becoming Hope
School Of Hope Archbishop
Instruments Of Giallo
The Abc's Of Hope
Hands Of Hope

There are some absolutely incredible pieces in this book. A few of them immediately hit the mark for me, and a few require more thought. I have already added this book to my Lent reading list for next year so that I circle back and revisit it. There are 5 cross-over authors from the previous volume including Matthew Kelly writing the forward and Pope Francis the introduction. I have read a number of books by one of the other contributors. But there are 14 authors that I had not read yet. And the contributors in order of appearance are:

Matthew Kelly
Pope Francis
Fr. Mike Schmitz
Sr. Miriam James Heidland, Solt
Fr. Jacques Philippe
Tom Pagano
Fr. J. Michael Sparough, SJ
Jessica Lusher Gravagna
Cardinal Donald Wuerl
Pat Mckeown
Fr. Jonathan Meyer
Linda Maliani
Derek Gazal
Rebecca Recznik
Marguerite Brambani
Talia Westerby
Archbishop José H. Gomez
Msgr. Geno Sylva, Std
Dr. Allen R. Hunt
Grandpa Hess

In the first price Fr. Mick Schmitz states: "We live in a hopeless age. Don't get me wrong-there is an awful lot of optimism, but very little hope. The source of this hopelessness is a profound lack of meaning in most people's lives. Many of us live our lives looking forward to "the next thing." We say things like, "It might be rough now, but once I get that promotion, then I'll be fine." Or, "I know that I'm lonely now, but once I find someone, then I'll be fine." Or, "I know that my spouse and I are discontented now, but once we have kids, then we will be fine." Or the thousand other things we look forward to that will help us to be "fine." There is nothing wrong with looking forward to something, but sooner or later we discover that it just doesn't deliver. We go on to the next thing and are no better off. We miss the meaning of the moments of our lives because we have forgotten that all of life is meaningful." he then concludes his piece with these words: "How does a person grow in hope? By reconnecting with God's story. By being reminded that we believe that there is more to this life than just this life. By being committed to the truth that God is in all things and all moments and that our decisions matter. And then … then simply beginning to make choices. Decide. Act on those decisions. You cannot do everything, but you can do something. Do what you can, and you will find that hope has become a powerful force in your life." Choosing to read this book will be an act of Hope, it will move you from the realm of wishing to growing in a knowledge and more than likely experience of true hope.

Each chapter concludes with a Focus and Reflection Section just a line or two to help bring home the chapter. A sample from the chapter called Nadia is:
"FOCUS: One life can change so much. With each YES, we give Christ a chance to enter the world and let the light of God shine amidst the darkness.
REFLECT: What is God giving you the chance to say YES to today?"
And after these two sections is a brief biography of the contributor 2 or three lines at most.

Dr. Allen R. Hunt's chapter The ABC's of Hope is literally that. He has a short paragraph for each letter of the alphabet with between 2 and 5 sentences in that paragraph. It is a unique piece of work, compared to the rest of this collection.

The final chapter by Grandpa Hess Ends with these words: "In my life, hope has been found in people. It is through people that God has shown me how he loves to do the extraordinary through the ordinary. My wife is my hope. My children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren are my hope. Padre Pio is my hope. Jesus is my hope. You are my hope.
Yes, you reading this, you are my hope. You are a gift from God to the world. You hold within you the hope of a greater and more beautiful Church. You hold within you the hope that this can become a nation of holy families and saintly priests and religious. You hold within you the hope that love can prevail over hate. You hold within you the hope that God will bring the wonderful message of salvation to every corner of the earth.
You are the hands of God in the world. Go now and make him something beautiful." And by opening ourselves up to hope, through this book, the people in our lives, and the people God brings into our lives.

This book was an amazing read. I have been praying for a couple of years now to learn to live more joy. After reading this book I will start praying to live more joy and more hope. I am not sure which of the two come first, but based on my first reading of this book there is definitely a relationship between them. I honestly believe that if you read this book with an open heart, you will be transformed, you will learn to live more hope, and you will become an agent of hope to those God places in your path. I believe that any Christian who read this book will be challenged and be changed. So give it a try for we could all use a little more real hope in our lives.

I really enjoyed a number of the stories in this book. Some were a bit of a stretch to fit soundly in the "hope" category, but overall it was a quick read and a nice book.

When I saw the title of this book, I felt it would be appropriate to read because of the sadness and stress I feel about our country's and the world's conditions. It contains inspirational and touching essays which teach great lessons on hope. There are various contributors from catholic religious and lay people. One of my favorite Christian authors, Matthew Kelley, wrote the Prelude and the Introduction is by Pope Francis.

If you are looking for a thought-provoking book to help you grow in your Faith, this is a good book to read during Lent or just any other time. The book is divided into four parts: (1) Choosing Hope, (2) Hope in the Church, (3) Hope in Action, and (4) Becoming Hope.

I chose to read it over a period of time which gave me a chance for reflection on the uplifting essays. It certainly helped me to better understand the hope that Jesus brings. Highly recommended.

This book was filled with short stories about the troubles that people experienced and how beautiful things happened because of their Faith. Be sure to have a box of tissues ready. Each story brought tears to my eyes both of joy and sorrow. It is also a quick read.

Matthew Kelly writes some really good, quick little reads that help reenergize your faith. This book is no exception. It is full of personal stories of hope from various everyday people. Because they hoped, I am encouraged to hope as well.

At the end of each testimony, you are given the option to reflect. Take the time and reflect on words you just read. It'll solidify the point of the story. You really can't have enough hope, and this book helps you in a beautiful way.

This books combines real experiences people have lived, and deep thoughts about how God is never quite regarding what we go through. Our merciful God talks to us through His words and deeds that are executed in the only way human beings can understand: relating to others. Do not despair, do not lose your hope because what is much more that what you can imagine.

4.5 ⭐️ this book is a beautiful compilation of stories from different perspectives and vocations (religious life, parents, grandparents, etc.) that inspire hope as promised. Every chapter starts with a simple but hard-hitting quote that many of which, I had to underline, highlight, and all the things. Not every chapter had the same impact on me but I enjoyed my time with this book and feel like I walked away with a new understanding of the incredible importance of hope in our daily lives. It’s a very short but powerful must-read for Catholics today!!

Some of my favorites:
“One obtains from God all that one hopes from him!” -St. John of the Cross
“Do not cast all hope away. Tomorrow is unthinkable. Oft hope is born when all is forlorn.” -J.R.R. Tolkien

Whether you are Catholic or not, this book by Matthew Kelly offers hope in the challenging world of today. There are stories about miracles, simple yet loving parents, and so many more that will move you to consider how you view life's circumstances...and your approach to them.

Reading Beautiful Hope has given me hope for my life and the impact I can have on the lives of others, especially those I know and love. It's a quick read, but it also causes you to stop, think, and reflect on the direction you want to move during the rest of your days.

God is good. You can choose between hope and despair, good and evil, love or hate. Choose.

In less than 100 pages of written text, this beautiful book is dense with wisdom. So much in fact, there are so many inspirational stories about hope that it seems like a 200-page book.

The book is arranged so each of the 18 chapters is written by a different author. Many of the mini-chapters are less than five pages long but provide a life lesson about hope and some tips on applying it to your own life.

2019 can be a busy and swirling and almost chaotic world. This book can provide a well-earned break from it and give you tools to reflect and succeed and be hopeful for the future and in the Catholic faith.

Its a good book.
Hope is so good to have.
But how to be Hopeful in all worries is a question to be answered.
Its good to have examples which says what are the results of a great Hopeful living.

But How to have that ultimate Hope.

The FountainHead has the character Roark which denote an epitome of Hope, self belief & self.
The Subconscious mind talks about an penultimate self which can generate great Hope.
And this book denotes real life people whose Hope led them to great life.

But still, How to get that Hope high in great doubts in daily life.

Hope is a beautiful thing ; perhaps the best of things . Each and everyone of these stories are beautiful. However two stories stood out for me . The first is Nadia . My wife and I had a disabled daughter and a son . Ten years after our disabled daughter was born we had a miracle baby too we named Kristen. We also were anxious but she was an Angel. The second is Hands of Hope . Grandpa Hess represents the greatness of this world. He says people are the hope of the world. I believe that also . He is living proof of that fact .

I really enjoyed this book. The reflections are each only a few pages and they are written by people with a variety of backgrounds and experiences. I would recommend this book to most anyone.

Personally, I’m eschatologically very hopeful and not so hopeful besides. This book, without using anything like this sort of language, does a good job of reflecting on what it means to bear the hope of God’s kingdom into the world around us. For that I am grateful.

A short collection of feel-good, surface-scratching anecdotes on the meaning and necessity of “hope” in the lives of Christians and those in religious vocations. I found a few chapters to be touching, but this is due to nature of the events at face value. The simplified writing style and brevity of each story leaves the content largely unmemorable.

The book’s intention is to be highly approachable and introductory—by those measures it meets expectations.

I regularly read books on spirituality to help my own spiritual journey, and I really enjoyed this one. A collection of writings from a vast array of authors--ranging from Pope Francis to a WWII veteran known only as "Grandpa Hess--gives us real-life, everyday advice for living your best life in step with the teachings of our Lord in a world that often looks to break us down at every turn. An easy read for anyone looking for practical lessons in faith.

This is a book of essays about the theological virtue of hope which, fortunately, was not written by Matthew Kelly. He wrote the prelude and probably selected the essayists. Some like Fr. Jacque Phillippe, Pope Francis, and Cardinal Donald Wuerl give some deep insights. Others are tasty pieces of hope that evoke some thought.
Read this in conjunction with a three-part series on the Catholic Church's Jubilee of Hope that I'm presenting in our parish.

Delves into the hope borne of suffering and brokenness. As such, the stories are heartbreaking and gut-wrenching and a couple are a bit too much to take. As is the practice of books from this publisher, there are practical action steps and reflections after each witness that are useful for transforming the dour parts of one’s life into a more hopeful outcome.
