The Quilter's Field Guide to Color: A Hands-On Workbook for Mastering Fabric Selection

Rate this book
Master effective color combinations with Rachel Hauser’s The Quilter’s Field Guide to Color .

Cut up the included color card, start one of the 14 exercises, and let’s play! The Quilter’s Field Guide to Color teaches readers just how to create color combinations. Each of the exercises is a new approach to color theory, challenging quilters to use their color cards (included) to explore a variety of possible combinations.

Using the colors selected during each of Rachel Hauser’s inspirational themes, such as Seasons and How to Determine Your Style, quilters sew up a Bear Paw block or two as they progress through the workbook. This collection of blocks can all be combined to create any of the three quilt patterns provided. Forget the dry color theory! This book is fun, conversational, practical, and beautifully inspiring.

Great primer on color theory and how to think about color in quilting (as a knitter I know I can put this to good use with yarn as well.)

I really appreciated the small section devoted to having a helpful fabric stash (again lessons also applicable to yarn.) After that section I can see that my stash runs more towards unhelpful fabrics that have many colors or are novelty that I purchased because I liked the fabric itself not because I knew it would play well with others.

The best part about this book is the huge color library in the back meant to cut out and used in the various color challenges throughout the book. She has you create various blocks to practice some color play and then there are three ideas for assembling them into a finished project towards the end.

I really enjoyed this book and found it was fun to do the color swatch exercises as a review of basic color theory. What I was hoping a bit more for was a deeper discussion around how a single material print with a multitude of color, would impact color perception of the fabrics around it and how to pair those multi-color patterns successfully. Otherwise a great book for everyone; if you’re a beginner and hesitant at choosing materials or a longtime quilter just looking to review color theory as it applies to quilting, this book has big beautiful images, lots of clear concise information and fun color palette exercises.

Loved playing w the swatches to apply what I was learning. Also loved the application to fabric in the last chapter, especially as it relates to building a stash that works. Mine is definitely out of balance!
