Controlled Process Shooting: The Science of Target Panic

Rate this book
Target Panic is not a disease, it is a hard wired self preservation system all of us have. Due to this reaction nearly every shooter will encounter a Target Panic associated issue at some point in their shooting career. However, with proper education on how we are wired, and instruction on how to approach the problem most shooters can remedy and improve their shooting dramatically. In the book we provide a detailed explanation of what Target Panic is, the mental and physical symptoms of what an archer might experience with Target Panic, and a step by step guide to implementing Joel Turner's Controlled Process Shooting system.

This is a short guide (57 pages, with about 11 dedicated for reader notes) that summarizes Joel Turner's process for addressing target panic in archery.

In the book, he begins with his definition of target panic and of two types of mental control systems that are used during physical activity. He then provides his solution to target panic which is to shoot using a closed loop mental control system, which is a combination of shot process separation and the use of a trigger mechanism (clickers, tab sear, grip sear) or a release aid to remove the subconscious hesitation from each shot. The author references a psychology text for his definition of mental control systems and provides a few images to assist in his explanations.

Overall, I think this book is a useful reference that can be adopted by anyone to improve their shooting. This system requires work on the part of the shooter to adopt it into their shot process and the book/process should probably be reviewed regularly to ensure that the process remains an active part of your shot.
