New York Times  and USA Today bestselling author Shelley Shepard Gray’s latest Christmas novel in her Amish of Hart County series. It’s set to be a white Christmas in Hart County, and Grace King is pet-sitting in a beautiful home with only a difficult dachshund for company. Just as she starts to miss the bustle of her large Amish family, Grace runs into a familiar face. Living right next door is John Michael Miller. He’s a fireman now, but five years ago, he had courted her older sister, then broke her heart. Seeing him again stirs Grace’s anger, but also reminds her of deeper feelings she’s done her best to deny. The infatuation John Michael once saw in Grace’s eyes is long gone, though his complicated attraction to her remains. He had walked away all those years ago when he realized he was falling in love with the wrong sister. Now, as suspicious fires are set in their community, that’s not an option. Grace dismisses his warnings, and John Michael vows to keep an eye on her. But he can’t help wondering if he’s reconnected with Grace, only to risk losing her again. Now all John Michael wants for Christmas is to keep Grace safe, in the hopes that they can one day have a future together.

I thought this story was Christmassy even with all the other things happening in the story. There was hard feelings between some of the characters due to a broken engagement in the past. But forgiveness was also a part of this story. There was lots of twist and turns and it was unpredictable. Entertaining and a page turner. I listened to the audio and the Narrator,Tavia Gilbert was very good at changing her voice for each of the characters. Very well written by Shelley Shepherd Gray.
Grace King is pet-setting for the Lee's difficult dachshund when he runs away from her while she's walking him. While searching for him she runs into John Michael Miller, her sisters former fiance. Since John Michael broke off their engagement there is hard feelings between him and the King family. But circumstances throw John Michael and Grace together and soon the infatuation they once felt for each other returns. Can anything good come from this?
This is a well rounded story with lots of things happening in the community of Hart County. Home fires and robberies are happening often. Grace is alone with the dog at the Lee's large home when she notices foot tracks in the snow around the outside of the house. Are the robbers planning to break into the house while Grace is there dog-sitting?
Readers of Amish Fiction and fans is the Author will enjoy this book. It's part of a series but can be read as a stand alone.

His Promise was a nice addition to the Amish of Hart County series. This story is book six in the series, but can be read as a stand alone novel, too. I really enjoyed this Christmas story that included not only Amish characters, but also firefighting, romance, and some danger.

Both of the main characters were very likable. Grace was so sweet and caring, often putting others before herself and looking to find a way to care for someone who had all but been forgotten by her family. John Michael was a great character. He was brave and loyal and a concerned, caring member of his community.

I definitely enoyed this book and recommend it to fans of Amish fiction and to those who enjoy Christmas stories.

Grace is a pet sitter, working over the Christmas season. Staying in the home of Englishers and taking care of their dog is a lonely job, with her friends and family off visiting others out of town. She takes the dog for a walk across the fields, and he promptly runs away. Help arrives in the form of her sister’s former boyfriend, the one whom Grace secretly liked. She had hardly seen him during the three years since the breakup, but it doesn’t take long before she - and John, now a fireman - realize they both have feelings for each other. There are complications due to his past relationship, and dealing with the reactions of her family won’t be easy. Adding to the stress is a series of arson fires and robberies. The author does a good job of setting up obstacles and resolving the difficulties. Though entertaining, it is also a thoughtful tale.

I loved how the characters here had compassion for those less fortunate in their community, and how the two main individuals come to basically the same conclusion at the same time from different places.
How can a couple have a romance when the girl’s family really dislikes the fellow? Answers are about to come and maybe they are right about him, but you will need to find out for yourself.
We also get to spend some time with a cute, maybe, little pup.
Throughout the challenges that seem to be happening, fires, robberies etc. we get to find out what is really important, and it is not the Christmas tree with the dog bones!
This is a quick read, and I loved being back in Hart County and with the people that I have a fondness for.

I received this book through Edelweiss and the Publisher HarperCollins, and was not required to give a positive review.

His Promise is the sixth installment from Shelley Shepard Gray’s The Amish of Hart County series. I believe this one is probably my favorite I have read of the series so date. I enjoyed Grace’s story. Especially, when John Michael came into the picture. There is a little mystery that needs to be solved that keeps reader interested, as well.
I give His Promise four stars. I recommend it for readers who enjoy Christmas time and Amish stories.

I received this book from the publisher. This review is 100% my own honest opinion.

Let me educate you on why it is imperative to write a review as soon as you finish a book. It's been a couple of weeks since I finished this book, like October when Ma was in the hospital and life was chaos. In trying to keep up with life and work and everything in between I've struggled to sit down and write this review. . . for a long time. I've partly struggled because all those initial 'feels' are vapor. I'm a 'feels' reviewer and now I have to try and become an cognitive reviewer. By that I mean that I'm not sharing out of the emotions of the book, which is where I write best from, but more from the lasting impressions, which are harder for me to write from. Think from, yes, write from oh no. I toyed for a moment with re-reading the book to get feels again, but it's the holiday season and I'm still drowning over here. So here we go with a cognitive review of a book I absolutely loved, a month or more ago.

Imagine being in a strangers home for the holidays while your family also went out of town. Grace finds herself in just this situation while pet sitting a grump dachshund while an arsonist is on the lose in their community along with other nefarious menaces and she finds herself next door to her sister's ex beau, the one who broke her heart. A person you hoped to never see again, for varying reasons not all related to said sister's broken heart. Like the fact that maybe, she had a crush of her own on the young man. Meanwhile, John Michael has moved on with his life as a firefighter after calling things off with Grace's sister. He's close with his family and building a name for himself in the fire department. Yes, he has guilt about how things happened but he had his own secrets to hide. Namely a crush on Grace. Thrown together because of the dog, and an older lady from their community who is having some memory issues and serious neglect from her family they forge their way forward.

I appreciate the skirting of insta-love. Yes, they fell for each other pretty hard and pretty fast, but they had history. Not their history, really a stolen history, but a history all the same. I loved how they came to the same ideas and decisions without having to hash it all out. I like that they built their relationship on a solid foundation of what is now instead of letting themselves get sucked into the past, though Grace struggled more so there. At the end of the day this quote sums so much of their relationship up perfectly, and really any relationship across the board. 'I'd rather live with consequences from something that I chose to do instead of something I was forced to do.' If John Michael hadn't have called things off with Grace's sister then they would never had been provided an opportunity to explore their own feelings for each other. Had that relationship gone forward it might have even caused bigger issues down the road. Even the sister eventually saw that John and Grace were better suited for each other than she had ever been with him. At the end of the day, the mayhem was caught, the romance was on solid footing and this was the perfect conclusion to the Amish of Hart County series. Perfect as a stand alone I highly recommend the entire series.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book by Edelweiss+. I was not compensated for this review and all thoughts and opinions expressed are my own. I was not required to write a positive review.

When I sit down to read a book by Ms. Gray, I always feel like I’m visiting with a good friend and know that I’m going to be completely engaged and will enjoy every second of a good and interesting conversation. As an added bonus in, His Promise, I also got a mystery and a few unsettling moments.

I loved Grace King and her occupation of pet-sitting, this was the first time that I have read an Amish fiction novel where the protagonist made a living doing something other than quilting, baking or something quite so English. I fell in love with, Snooze the five-year old, unsocial and stubborn dachshund she was caring for during the Christmas season. The author created the perfect hero when she created John Michael Miller. A handsome and caring firefighter that was so easy to love.

As much as I loved Grace and John Michael, I loved Dorma Schultz even more and my heart broke for her and the way her life had changed as she aged. Dorma is truly a precious and lovely character that will forever live in my heart. That brings me to another one of the many reasons why this author remains one of my favorites, her ability to make me genuinely care about her characters and getting me so caught up in their lives.

The Amish of Hart County series has been one of my favorites and I can’t recommend it enough. I’ve enjoyed the mystery, the unique storylines, and the times I’ve been a little on the edge of my seat. If you haven’t read any of the other books in this series, His Promise can easily be read as a stand alone. It has a great storyline and moves at the perfect pace with warm characters that you will love.

I received a copy from the publisher and was under no obligation to write a review. All opinions are my own.

Hands down one of the most persnickety canine heroes comes in the shape of a dachshund aptly named Snooze...only when he isn't snoozing he's causing trouble. Grace has never had such a difficult charge. She's pet-sitted just about every type of critter you can imagine -- feathered, furred -- even scaled -- and she's always found a way to bond with every one of them. Until Snooze. He leads her on a merry chase...and right into the arms of a man she had a secret crush on in her teens. The same man her sister was practically engaged to!

It's been five years since John Michael broke things off with Grace's sister. Five years for the King family to nurse their bitterness and pull Grace into their unhealthy resentment. Now, here she is living right next door to John Michael who seems intent on not only seeking forgiveness but renewing their friendship. And doesn't her heart just flutter at that thought? While her stomach gnarls in knots over what her parents will say! I so love a twisted mess of a romance that seems doomed from the start!

Thankfully Snooze brings some great comic relief to the more serious aspects of this story. Along with the angsty romance, there's an arson mystery to solve and a case of elder neglect and Grace is in the middle of it all! I was in a page-turning frenzy right to the end!

What a spectacular send off for the last book in the Amish of Hart County series!

HIS PROMISE is book six in Ms. Gray's Amish of Hart County series but it easily stands alone. There are some previously mentioned characters, but they are nonintrusive and you don't need to read their story to understand this one.

Grace is pet-sitting a grumpy dog and at first I think she is not the brightest crayon in the box. She puts the leash on the dog, carries him outside, unhooks the leash and puts him down and the dog promptly runs away. Well, duh. I guess she learns her lesson though, the dog is walked on the leash from then on.

The suspense is really low key. There is an arsonist working with a robber and that is keeping the police and fire department busy. Grace sees footprints around the pet owners residence and the door opened, but no one believes her until after Grace invites a lady with beginning dementia to stay with her.

There is a stronger than usual, for Ms. Gray's books, faith message, which is really nice. The romance is, of course, pure and wholesomely sweet.

Fans of Amish romance, low-grade romantic suspense, and Ms. Gray will love this book. It will make a great gift for the reader on your Christmas list.

His Promise by Shelley Shepard Gray is the sixth tale in The Amish of Hart County series. Grace King is pet sitting, Snooze while his owners are on vacation. She is enjoying the quiet time away from her large and rambunctious family, but Grace had not anticipated so much of it. Her grandparents came down ill with the flu so her whole family packed up and headed to Ohio to take care of them and spend the holidays together. Grace’s best friend, Jennifer and her family have also left town for the holidays. Grace is out walking Snooze when he darts off. She is hunting for the little rascal when Grace encounters John Michael Miller who lives next door. John Michael had courted Grace’s sister, Beth three years ago and left her with a broken heart when he ended the relationship abruptly. Grace had been sixteen years old at the time when she was quite smitten with John Michael and did her best to keep her feelings under wraps. John Michael (what a mouthful) is a fire fighter for Hart County Fire Department and helps his parents with their farm during his downtime. He broke up with Beth when he realized he was courting the wrong sister. After helping Grace locate Snooze, he walks her home where they see strange footprints in the snow that circle the house. John Michael is worried about Grace’s safety especially with the number of questionable fires in the area and suspicious robberies. He is not about to let something happen to Grace now that he has reconnected with her. Will a dangerous situation lead to a happily ever after? Christmas is a time for miracles.

His Promise is a part of The Amish of Hart County series, but it can be read alone. I thought His Promise was well-written with steady pacing. Grace is a kind yet naïve woman who has a pet sitting service. She is the quietest member of her family and, while she loves her family, she needs some time alone now and then. Grace’s generosity comes pouring out of the pages as she goes out of her way to help someone in need. John Michael felt he at home with the King family, but he felt he needed to stay away after he broke things off with Beth. John Michael now realizes that he handled the breakup of his relationship with Beth incorrectly (he was too abrupt). John Michael is a firefighter which is a dangerous and unusual professional for someone who is Amish. Some of the Christian themes prevalent in His Promise are honoring God, prayer, have faith, helping others and all things are possible with God. The Christian elements are woven into the story seamlessly. His Promise has a lovely ending that readers will appreciate. I did not understand why John Michael nor Grace ever spoke with their parents, a deacon, or the Bishop when someone in their community needed assistance. I like that they were helping the individual, but it was not a long term solution. Part of the Amish culture is the sense of community so this seemed out of place. I am giving His Promise 4 out of 5 stars. There are recipes at the end of the book along with discussion questions. His Promise contains romance, suspense, mystery, faith, family, generosity, a cute dog, and the spirit of Christmas.

My thoughts: 📖 Page 25 of 216/225 Chapter 5 - I hate I have to leave. This felt refreshing, probably because it's hot outside. I'm not a fan of keeping it in the family, but it seems like there was a misunderstanding.
📖 55 Chapter 10 - Hitting a slight lull. The characters from Book 5 are here, but the mystery hasn't gained any heat yet.
📖 167 Chapter 30 - I would have been done if I wasn't on Facebook. Now I'm out of time. It's obvious what's going on, but it's still an enjoyable story. I'll finish it today for sure.

This felt very Hallmark and right on time for me. It wasn't the best story but it was cozy and I LOVED every bit of it, I wasn't even mad about the sister's ex storyline.

Recommend to others: Yes. This series had been great and it ended on a very high note.

Grace has made her niche in life by pet sitting for Englishers who go out of town. This year for Christmas while she is pet sitting a very cantankerous dachshund her family has to go to her grandparents to take care of them. When the dachshund gets into a little trouble Grace runs into John Michael Miller, her sister's ex-boyfriend and the boy she had a crush on when she was younger.

John Michael regrets hurting Grace's sister several years ago but he had a good reason, he was falling for Grace. John Michael is now a firefighter and this season has been busy with arson fires being set to cover local burglaries.

Can Grace forgive John Michael for hurting her sister and let their feelings grow? Can John Michael keep Grace safe even when he is not around?

Let me start with the end, the last forty pages had me in tears. Why? The beauty of the story coming together and the action happening. See if you don't have a glimmer of tears in your eyes as you read.

Shelley Shepard Gray has a way to make the love come through in a beautiful, clean way. I would feel very comfortable giving any of her Amish books to any young teenage girl to read.

I loved that Gray included helpful fire safety tips especially during the Christmas season in the story. A few things I learned and have started looking around to make sure my parents and family are as safe as I can make them.

Gray's Amish of Hart County is a six book series that can be read any in order and each as a stand alone book. Once you take a visit you will want to keep visiting.

An Amish pet sitter, a past love for a young man who is a firemen, fires caused by arson, robberies, Christmas and an older lady that had been forgotten by so many in the community will keep the pages turning in His Promise. This latest installment in the Amish of Hart County series by Shelley Shepard Gray was a charming read where the hero and heroine are drawn together despite Grace King’s family attitude about John Michael Miller. Their compassionate spirit in reaching out to Dorma before tragedy struck her home and then caring for her afterwards. Christmas is difficult without family close by but the unique happenings that brought the characters together made this an outstanding read.

I’ve enjoyed every book in The Amish of Hart County, but this is one of my favorite with the suspense, unusual occupations of the Grace and John Michael, a sweet spoiled dachshund named Snooze, action and scenes filled with vivid description that I felt I was in the middle of all that was transpiring. Then add in romance, friends, family, faith and God’s answered prayers for this winsome Christmas story. I look forward to reading Shelley Shepard Gray’s next Amish series. She never fails to provide plenty of intriguing characters and events when you close the book you think about the story in days, months and even in a year afterwards.

In Shelley Shepard Gray’ novel, “His Promise”, we visit Hart County, around Christmas time. Amish girl, Grace King is a member of a large, boisterous, family. She is a quiet sort, however, and relishes her time alone. She is a pet sitter and has accepted a job during the Christmas holidays, sitting for a cantankerous little dachshund in a large beautiful home. John Michael Miller lives near the home and has a history with the King family. John is a firefighter but remains Amish. In the past, he and Grace’s sister were keeping company until he broke it off. The family was very upset and John Michael was no longer a friend of the family.

The community is being targeted by arsonists who set fires in order for everyone to be busy fighting the fires while they steal from other homes. Grace is sure that someone is watching the house and John Michael and the sheriff find signs that she is right. In dealing with this threat, Grace and John Michael become close. Now the struggle will be to find the culprits and convince Grace’s family that John Michael is not the ogre they painted him to be.

Oh, how I enjoyed this Amish Christmas story by one of my favorite authors. I've read a lot of this author's books, but her Amish Christmas stories are delightful!

The main characters in this book are well-developed and likable; but the real scene-stealer here is the little dachshund, Snooze, who Grace King is hired to care for while his owners are on a holiday vacation. This little guy has a huge personality, and his antics are varied and sometimes hilarious.

Highly recommended!

**This book is completely clean in language and content. :0}

It’s Christmas and Grace is pet sitting at a wealthy woman’s house. She is missing her family who have left for the season. Grace sees the man , John, who had courted her sister and broke her sister’s heart. Grace has always had feelings for him and the spark is still there. The town has been having break ins and fires. John is a firefighter and worried about the town and Grace. Even Though Grace is Amish the story doesn’t have that much Amish in it.

This book was among the best to keep you reading and not wanting to put the book down. Grace was an exceptional young lady so thoughtful and caring. Happy that she fell in love with the right man who helped her so much in her busy life of pet sitting and taking care of Dorma. A very Happy ending.

With a great mix of both the English and the Amish world I began to love the setting of Shelley Shepard Gray's book, His Promise. The Amish are right there along with the buggies and the countryside but the English play a big part too in their lives. Along with a great romance and mystery it makes this a great story.

His Promise reminds me that family matters can get complicated and not all families are perfect. With a faith in God they get better and with love you can learn to move on.

I became really interested when Miss Dorma came into the story. Strong for an older women but yet needing help she brought a reminder to watch out for others in our lives.

I also loved the Mom in this story. I worry I'm a bit like her.
A great read!

As Author Shelley Shepard Gray takes us back to the Amish of Hart County, Kentucky, it’s Christmas time. Grace King’s business of pet-sitting involves taking care of a rambunctious dachshund named Snooze in a beautiful, quiet roomy house for two weeks over the Christmas holiday. She believes it will be a lonely Christmas without her family, but when Grace finds herself face-to-face with John Michael Miller, a man who broke her sister’s heart years ago, will her feelings for him bubble back to the surface? When alarming and suspicious things begin to occur in their community, will John Michael succeed in protecting Grace without her realizing the depth of feelings he has for her? Woven throughout the story is a thread of suspense and romance. You will enjoy the characters especially little Snooze. Treat yourself to a copy, plus it would make a charming gift!

His Promise is the 6th amazlingly ecxiting book written by Shelley Shepard Gray in her Amish of Hart County series. I was so enthralled in this book that I could not put it down. I got up extra early to finish it. The storyline is full of love, suspence, and of course faith. This book carries on the story of all that has happened the last two years in Hart County. I hate to see the series end because I would like to see what happens with the amazing Dorma. I grew to love that Amish lady. She was a special adfition to this story.

I loved all the characters in this book. I enjoyed the love story between Grace and John Michael. I especially loved that with Grace and John Michael getting together it healed a friendship between the families. I especially liked Snooze. I am a dog lover and enjoyed his little antics and the fact that he grew to love Grace as well.

The mystery and suspense in this story will definitely keep the readers interest and attention. I found myself wondering what I would do in Grace's position.

I was not given a complimentary copy of this fantastic story to read and review. I was not approached by anyone to post a favorable review. I have rated this book with five stars for meeting my expectations of a wonderful story that I can highly recommend to others.

Congratulations to Shelley Shepard Gray on writing another fantastic story for her readers to enjoy and I will be watching for more fantastic releases from this author in the future.

I received a free copy of this book. Opinions shared are mine.

I’ve followed The Amish of Hart County series starting with the first book. His Promise, book 6, is my favorite one!

In His Promise, author Shelley Shepard Gray gives us two strong characters. Grace and John Michael have an indirect history, and their bond is quickly rekindled through shared circumstances. A little dog named Snooze takes center stage, too, which was charming. I also admired the way Grace took care of an elderly widow named Miss Dorma. Overall, the plot worked well despite the vast variety of situations the characters found themselves in.

Even though this is book 6 in a series, it can be read as a standalone. There’s not a significant backstory to learn. While there are brief mentions of other characters from the series, it doesn’t detract from the reading experience if you don’t know those characters. Just understand that a lot has happened in the town of Horse Cave over the past two years!

Grace King is spending the Christmas holidays houseitting for an Englisch family instead of her family who have gone to help her grandparents weather illness. Even her best friend Jennifer is out of town, leaving her in a big haus with a little dachshund, Snooze who rules the roost.

Snooze gets loose and Grace’s search runs her right into John Michael Miller, Grace’s sister’s ex-suitor who helps her find the hund. The question is, what else will they find in the December snow?

Shelley Shepherd Gray’s lovely voice shines through in this Christmas focused addition to her Amish of Hart County series. These books bring you into what most of us only know from stories, the world of the Amish. It’s fairly easy to predict the outcome but you still settle in for a “wunderful gut” story, especially when it’s a hot summer and you’re reading a book about a snowy time of year. This is my first Christmas book of the year and I couldn’t be happier to snuggle in with old friends. Highly recommended 5/5 #Goodreadswin. Book drops 10/23/18

In His Promise, Shelley Shepard Gray adds a Christmas story to her Amish in Hart County series.

Like the others in this series, this story contains both suspense and romance, as well as a taste of Christmas and the antics of a challenging little dachshund. The characters include a wide range of folks, young and old, Amish and English, "good guys" and "bad guys."

The story is engaging and intriguing and a great read for fans of Amish fiction. It can be read as a part of the series or as a stand-alone.

Thanks to the author and her publisher for providing a copy of the book. I am happy to share my own thoughts in this review.
