5☆ Gripping race against time

Wow what a book.
Captor is a thrilling race against time a detective cat and mouse chase.
It was fast paced, gripping, lots of secrets, little twists, murder, kidnap and secret affairs.

I can't write about the plot as it will give too much away.
So what I will say is this is a story about revenge! Who's revenge and why remains a mystery till the end.
It was cleverly put together and I honestly didn't have a clue!

It's about a mother's anguish, who to trust, secret liaisons.
A child gets abducted is every mothers worst nightmare.

The Captor was brilliant the reader was treated to lil clues that may or may not be linked to the case. The Captor was chilling, cold, yet appeared to have glimmers of softness, but his main drive and focus was revenge!

Every few chapters we delve into the Captors story as we hear from then and the victims inner thoughts.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Captor. I literally read it in one night as I desperately wanted to figure out who the cold, calculating Captor was and if my theory was true! Which it wasn't!

If you are looking for a crime thriller that is somewhat unnerving as it is every mothers worst nightmare, a fast paced page turner that keeps you guessing. Then I definitely recommend Captor!

Thank you to Bloodhound Books for this copy which I reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

Liz Chambers has a secret. A secret is only a secret if only one person knows it. Someone else knows her secret ....

When her young son is kidnapped from the babysitter's house, the kidnapper leaves behind two dead bodies.

Why would someone want her son? She has no money for a ransom. Was he taken out of revenge? But who would want to hurt her this much?

This was a very well-written suspenseful novel. The story premise is a good one with characters that the reader won't forget anytime soon. I did find it a bit predictable, but that did not diminish my interest at all. The ending was such a complete surprise, I found myself reading it twice. The story's uniqueness earned a 5-star rating.

Many thanks to the author / Bloodhound Books / Netgalley for the advanced digital copy. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

I loved the sound of Captor so it got bumped right up my ‘to be read pile’ as soon as I had a copy of it. Without a doubt having a child going missing is every parents worst nightmare. My heart went out to Liz as I had every empathy for her.

I was so wary of every character in this novel. Everyone was a suspect in my eyes apart from Liz. Only problem was I couldn’t work out who it was so made for quite a shock when it finally all comes out!

Liz’s oldest son Dan was a character that really stood out to me. A teenager but one that is older than his young years. I loved how he looks out for his mum and you could really feel the close bond between both.

Captor is one of those stories that hooks you in from the start. The suspense of who is behind the kidnapping mounts throughout the story, making for an exciting and thrilling ride. Another unputdownable read of which I wouldn’t expect anything less from the author.

I don’t know what it is but there’s something about children going missing.
So many books are written about this and some merge into another, you know?

Well, this one was an exception to that and really sucked me in and it kept giving and giving to my inquisitive mind.

I’ve regrettably had this book on my kindle for far too long and this year is the year to read more back books.

A well written plot with well rounded characters and excellent plot!

This is the third book I have read by this author and I have to say that she is a brilliant author and I know when I pick up one of her books I am definitely in for a treat!!

The cover and the blurb are great and you are completely drawn in as soon as you start reading the book, it is a very hard one to put down and I stayed up late to finish the book off. Liz is a great character and I couldn't wait to see how the book ended- a really well written, gripping book with plenty of twists for me!

Five stars from me - very highly recommended!!

Liz is a successful lawyer with a husband and son... and a secret.... Her secret puts her families lives in danger... who wants to hurt her so much.

I have read and enjoyed 2 other books by Anita Waller.. 34 Days and Strategy so when this book became available on NetGalley I did not hesitate to request it. Again I found this to be a great story and a quick read. I did work out who the Captor was early on but I still enjoyed this book.

Thank you to Bloodhound Books for a copy of this book to read in exchange for my honest opinions

The cover and blurb of this book intrigued me so I couldn’t resist reading it. I’m so glad I did. Last night I thought I’d read a chapter or two before bed. I read 70%. This morning before I even got out of bed I finished it. I knew I wouldn’t be able to function today until I found out how it was going to end.

Liz Chambers has a job she loves and 2 kids she adores. She’s hiding a secret that could destroy her and her family. When her youngest son is kidnapped from his childminders home she is devastated. When secrets start coming out it’s a race against time to find out who the Captor is and find her son.

I absolutely loved this story. I was totally gripped. The twists I didn’t expect and I didn’t guess who the Captor was. I’ll definitely be reading more from this author in the future.

This story didn't grab me hard till the "guy" wound up chained in a basement starving. Then the infant in the dumb waiter---- I don't want to give away the story. The author is very good at twists and if I as a reader am bread-dough being emotionally punched down, dusted, and flipped over to rise again, then I am now a beautiful loaf of bread. I could think only of an analogy to show the emotional trip this story took me on. To the author: I was in love with P. at the end.

This book is deserves much more than five stars - I loved it!
Liz is distraught when her baby is taken from the childminder’s home and her life starts to crumble around her.
The Police try and help her and her teenage son Dan to cope with the shock and do all they can to work out who is responsible for such an evil deed.
This is so much more than just the kidnapping of a child though as other elements in Liz’s life are also affected. I can’t say too much without spoiling it but if you like gripping crime thrillers, then you will really enjoy this book.
It is a real page turner and the last few chapters had me holding my breath in anticipation.
Thanks to Bloodhound Books and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read this book.

Captor will have you gripped from the beginning and won’t let you go until you have finished. It is a suspense filled crime thriller that will keep you guessing throughout. I was honestly shocked at the outcome of this story, I did not expect it at all! I felt sorry for poor Liz, there is only so much one character can take and she had it all thrown at her!

Stories like these that contains babies and young children always get to me a little more cause I’m a parent myself I relate to the mother/father character and think what would I actually do in that situation, its scary. I found Captor an easy, fast paced read and enjoyed every minute of it. I awarded a well deserved four stars. Another brilliant book by Anita with a fab cover too. I would highly recommend this story to you all!

I would like to thank NetGalley and Bloodhound Books for giving me the opportunity to read thus which I voluntarily reviewed.

This is an engrossing read that cleverly draws you into the lives of the characters who are all well-drawn and believable.
I loved the way the story built gradually, increasing the tension as you read.
I thought I knew who the Captor was but was way off the mark.

If I could give this more than 5 stars I would.

I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys a tense, psychological thriller.

I like Anita Waller, she writes good books that have lots of twists and turns and keeps you hooked. She has a real skill when it comes to creating characters that feel really real and relatable.

Liz is struggling to adjust with her return to work after maternity leave, she misses her son and hates leaving him but she is comforted to know that he is in capable hands, but when she finishes work and goes to collect her son she finds her worst nightmare.

There are many levels to this story and it is told predominantly from Liz’s point of view, but also from other key characters that help to build the tension and tell the story.

I love how Waller is able to make a story with real heart, we know the reason why the crimes are being committed and often can relate and understand why. Less so in Captor than her other books but that’s ok.

My one gripe about Captor is that I never really felt that Liz’s son was ever really at risk which was a shame as it meant that there was less tension than there could have been, although whether I was right in that assumption I’m not going to say.

Overall Captor is an enjoyable read, Waller has definitely done it again and proves herself to be one of the best storytellers in the genre of murder, necessary murder, as she likes to say.

At the beginning of the story we see Liz going back to work and having the issues every working mother does leaving her baby with someone who isn’t them, but it starts to become much more sinister. Someone called ‘the captor’ has her in their sights and won’t stop until she has nothing left.

At first this story a bit of a hard read for me, I have a son myself and it is one of my worst fears, (actually I think it’s every parents worst fear), that something should happen to him but I got pulled in by the interesting characters. I went on a real rollercoaster of emotions, hoping that Liz would find her son.

There is so much more this book and I don’t want to reveal too much as I feel it might spoil other people’s enjoyment of this great story. I will say, to me, it started off a little slowly, building up to a tense, drama packed read. I was literally biting my nails by the end.

My only real complaints were I kind of figured out who ‘the captor’ about half way through. I also at found Liz a little bit hard to like at times and her older son Dan, who’s about sixteen, a little too perfect and well behaved, but of course that’s just my opinion.

Overall a tense read and be prepared to have the tissues at the ready!

Liz is returning to work after having a baby, she has vetted the childminder and made sure her son was comfortable with her. This does not stop the fretting after leaving him but as the days go on she relaxes a little and then the unspeakable happens. Liz goes to pick up Jake and found he had been kidnapped and the kidnapper had left behind two dead bodies! The police are doing all that they can to find Jake quickly but then they realise that Liz is holding something back, she has a secret that when she does give them the information makes the case all the more difficult.I would love to tell you her secret but I will not spoil it for you but I will say that I did finish it in a day. I found it hard to put down as the suspense had me gripped.
I am grateful to Bloodhound for introducing me to this author and I will be on the lookout for her earlier books and new ones.

Anita has a talent, a wonderful talent with words. From the very first chapter you are drawn in to the main character and although in a way little happens in that chapter-it is a scene setting scenario- you know enough that you want to know more. Liz has had an affair whilst her husband was away with work for a few weeks. The result is Jake, her baby. She is only occasionally in touch with Phil as she finished the affair as soon as her husband was back home. It now appears that Phil has left his wife and neither of them have heard from him. When Jake, her son by Phil is taken, this is only the start of her nightmares. Please don’t see this as “just another snatched child” tale, it is so much, much more than that. A tale of feelings and memories, of heartache and woe. I thought I knew who Captor was…. and was right however this doesn'tspoil the rest of the book one bit. Anita has struck gold again in my eyes (I have never read anything than excellent books from her). If you like a book to grip you, throw you around a little and one where you “have” to keep turning the pages then this book is for you.

I do not like to read books about cheating spouses. Nowhere in the blurb is this mentioned. Call me old fashioned, puritanical or whatever, but I have no respect for cheating spouses. Therefore it is unlikely I am going to like characters who embody this trait. I nearly stopped reading as soon as I saw this. Wish I had.

Liz has worked at a small law firm as a paralegal for 12 years. She has been married to Gareth for around 20 years and they have an almost 16 year old son. Liz cheats with Phil, who is also married, with a disabled daughter. They carry on an affair for 6 months when Liz discovers she’s pregnant with Phil’s child. She tells him she has to break it off with him because she can’t upset her teenage son. WTF?! Little late to be thinking of her son. And Phil let’s her walk away knowing she’s pregnant with his child? Who are these people?

Phil is a client of the law firm Liz works for. If the partners knew about her affair with a client, she would lose her job. She and Phil break all contact but keep their “love” cell phones in case they need to reach the other for whatever reason. Again, WTF? I find it implausible that a man who is supposedly deeply in love with her would accept letting go of a child they conceived together and allow it to be raised by another man.

Supposedly both Liz and Phil are trapped in loveless marriages because of their children. And this makes it ok to cheat?

The baby comes and everyone continues their lives as usual. Until the baby is kidnapped at about 9 months of age. This is discovered when Liz goes to pick the baby up at the sitter’s. She discovers the babysitter and Liz’s husband both naked and dead. He’s been having an affair with the nanny. Seriously?

It is obvious from the start who the “Captor” is if you pay any attention at all.

I’ve already had one DNF this year so I forced myself to finish this one. Not a book I can recommend.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC provided by NetGalley and the publisher.

The tagline on the front of the book states '..a gripping thriller you don't want to miss' and believe me that is very true!

I was absolutely gripped and on edge throughout this rollercoaster of a book and had to read the ending a few times to help it all sink in.

After reading the first few chapters you are sort of waiting for something to happen and when it does.... BAM! Unexpected twists are thrown at you from all directions as you try to figure out what is happening.

The story is written mainly from the perspective of Liz as she struggles to cope and fathom who on earth would kidnap her baby son. I felt absolutely distraught for her. The author really puts us in her shoes and we feel every emotion along the way. We are also treated to perspectives from 'Captor' as we slowly learn about the actions that have led to this.

I don't want to give away too much as this book is such a treat and I greedily devoured it as fast as I could.

The author really keeps you on the edge of your seat - the twists made me gasp and she sets the atmosphere absolutely perfectly.

Highly recommended from me!

Its that time again Anita Waller has produced another captivating read in her new book Captor, full of secrets, lies, adultery, child abduction, family issues, murder and REVENGE….. What more could you want to titillate and spark your desire for a sensational psychological read.

Liz’s child is abducted from her childminders home, is there someone out there who wants to destroy her life?

Liz harbours a secret which could destroy her family, will she have to reveal the secret to save her child, can she save her family?

All questions which need to be answered!

I followed the scent of the intricate labyrinth of deception and secrets, capturing the essence of fear and suspense, hoping and praying Liz would survive the harrowing ordeal and have her child returned. Liz on occasions seemed a little contrite, but I also found her belligerent at times, this possibly could have been due to the police investigation into her life. Even so, I felt that I actually connected with Liz in several ways, I empathised with her situation, wondering what would I do in her shoes, what would anyone else do, after all its your child.

Anita’s depiction of the characters, lead me to feel cautious and guarded about who was to blame, who could be the perpetrator, they all had aspects in there characterisations which I believed made them capable of abducting a child but boy was I dead wrong. Anita threw me for a loop, all the ducking and diving produced a electrifyingly first-class conclusion to a traumatic thriller.

I guarantee you will not be able to put Captor to rest until finished, jam packed and stacked with everything you could desire in a criminal psychological thriller.

Thank you to Anita Waller for capturing my imagination and thoroughly enthralling my senses, it has been a pleasure to have been offered an advanced readers copy of Captor, to read and review with my own unbiased opinions. Also thanks to Bloodhound Books and Sarah Hardy for a damn good read, keep the fantastic books coming!

Anita Waller’s new stand-alone is a must read for crime thriller readers.
The premise of the story is quickly set, and the author draws you in while packing a punch.
Liz is a character that I found slightly difficult to warm to, she is being as practical as she can in an extreme situation that I would never have wanted to even imagine. But, her secret is affecting her decisions. Which at times made me think she was being selfish, however I do know that she was trying to be protective of those around her.
The author has a knack of bringing us family dynamics at their best and worst, showing human nature from all diverse angles.
Captor is a read that kept me guessing who kidnapped the baby and why?
Although I may not have warmed to Liz totally, I did like how the author portrayed her character and that even though not falling apart at the seams; she was desperate to get her child back.
Domestic bliss does not follow Liz easily, and I found I was turning page after page to find the outcome and willing that the characters, especially the baby had a happy ending, but this is Waller so you will need to read to find out for yourself how her mind worked and who she left us with by the end of the book.
An interesting idea, that was carried out with cleverness and deviousness, which made for a stunningly addictive read.

Well what can I say? I have been really looking forward to reading Captor by Anita Waller and I wasn't disappointed.

You had suspense, drama and tears all in one book.

The turn of every page kept me hooked, Captor was beautifully written and brilliantly thought out. Although I guessed who the Captor was beforehand, there were a few red herrings thrown in to shake the reader off the scent.

Captor is one book you must read if you like suspense, crime and a good book.

I have been a big fan of Anita's since reading Beautiful and she only gets better with every book she writes. If you haven't read any of Anita's books, then please do, she is one very talented author and one that shouldn't be missed.

I enjoyed this, it made a change from many of the crime books I read but unfortunately for me a I worked out really early on who Captor was. I also worked out something else important to the plot at the end. For this reason I give is 4 *s. I did however like the characters and felt that Liz was a bit harsh with DI Brent he was doing his best and she should have been honest with him from the start. I thought it was well plotted but for the 'clues' that indicated to me who Captor was. I was a bit gut wrenching in places and very sad.

Captor comes to you from the best selling author of 34Days and the sequel, Strategy.

Anita never fails to give the reader an emotional rollercoaster of a ride, this one is no different. She gives with one hand and takes away with the other, leaving the reader saying noooooo, why?!? Which you will understand entirely upon reading the book.

Liz Chambers returns to work after maternity leave, to Banton & Hardwick, where she works as a successful lawyer. Also helping Tom Banton and Oliver Hardwick, the owners, with some of their overflow. She loves her work and has the best employers.

Everything seems to be going along ok, until the fateful day when a blast from the past shocks her to the core and threatens to destroy her world. Not only her world but destroy the lives of the ones she holds most dear to her. What she cannot predict are the horrific events that follow after she is given that innocuous white envelope.

Coming home from work one afternoon, Liz calls in at the childminders as usual, to collect Jake, her baby. What she isn't prepared for is the gruesome scene in front of her. Not only that, but Jake has gone. Missing without a trace.

The police have no leads, nothing to go on. But as Liz's secrets slowly come to the surface, it becomes clear, this is not a random attack. THIS is personal! But who would want to hurt her? Liz. A wife, a respected lawyer & employee, mother of 2 children. Your normal, everyday person. How could this nightmare be happening to her and who hates her enough to make her suffer through this?!?

This is an excellent storyline, executed with the authors usual aplomb and attention to detail. It's gritty and fast paced, a story that doesn't really give you time to take a breath. I felt as if I was only allowed a deep exhale at the end.(Along with a silent tear or two)

The characters were well thought out, well written and above all, believeable. There is tension aplenty virtually from the opening page. Especially notable is the dislike Liz shows towards the Detective , DI Brent, who is in charge of the case. As the story progressed we found out more and more about them. Like them or not, they're all strong personalities which shine through in the writing.

In all of this though, the relationship that got to me the most is the one between Liz & Jake. I have 5 children of my own, and the thought of someone taking any of them at any age, let alone such a young one, is incomprehensible to me. It made my chest tighten, throat ache & my stomach clench. I felt drawn into the situation and was rooting for a good outcome.

So again, what we have here is another jam-packed emotional rollercoaster of a thriller from a truly talented and established author

Thank you for the opportunity to read Netgalley! This was a riveting read from start to finish. Liz has been on maternity leave and right after she goes back to work realizes that the man she had an affair with, the father of her newborn, has been missing for months. Then, "Captor" takes her son. Every single person in her life becomes suspect, it could be anyone. We get glimpses into the life of the missing father and newborn, but the real shocker is who Captor ends up being. This is the only part of the story that I wish had been more explored. I feel like if the psyche of this individual had been a little more explored it would have give more depth to the hatred that this person felt toward Liz and would have added some more suspense to the novel. Great book!
