Some scars run deeper than others. Some hurts stain you forever. Some secrets refuse to stay hidden. They’re both broken in their own way, and from a broken home, the same broken home. Josh never meant to fall for his stepsister. For the longest time she was just the dorky, quiet girl taking up space in the spare bedroom. Emily wasn’t his real sister, but she felt a little like she could be, like what he imagined it would be like if he actually had a sister, then one night everything changed. An unplanned pregnancy. A misunderstanding that kept them apart for years. A pattern they seem doomed to repeat. Josh’s father was a drunk. Emily's mother didn’t understand the meaning of monogamy. Their marriage worked as well as you’d imagine, not well at all. At least Emily and Josh know what not to do. Emily is committed to doing better for their daughter, to giving her a normal life. But lately she’s begun to fear that she doesn’t even know what normal is supposed to look like, and neither does Josh. The two of them together are everything she’s determined to avoid; dysfunctional, codependent, a disaster waiting to happen. She loves him, but maybe love’s not enough. She wants him—Josh is the only man she’s ever wanted or trusted—but sometimes the things we want, aren’t the things we need. Sometimes the things we keep cut like broken glass. The tighter you hold on, the more it hurts.
Wow!! I absolutely loved reading The Things We Keep! It’s so true to real life! Ms. Fowler’s writing is incredible! There’s so many emotions and feelings experienced while reading this book! I was so engrossed in reading, I couldn’t believe how much time had passed! I couldn’t put it down! Emily and Josh’s story is of those that stay with you long after you’re done reading! I highly recommend it!!!
