After years of making minimum wage, college dropout Josh Clemmons may have found his salvation. Murmur Inc., a local adult entertainment company, is hosting auditions for new performers, and Josh has been invited to try out. If he can make it as a porn star, he can kiss his money troubles goodbye.
Mike Harwood is a loud-and-proud professional adult entertainer. In the past three years, he’s starred in dozens of films, and he’s very good at what he does. But as focused as he’s been on work, he’s neglected everything else, including his love life. He’s so used to faking attraction, he can no longer tell when something real is staring him in the face.
Josh gets the job, but when porn fails to live up to the fantasy, he quits to do cam work instead. But he can’t stop thinking about the one scene he filmed, and the captivating man he filmed it with. Their chemistry is undeniable, but Mike knows better than to mix business with pleasure. Then again, with true love on the line, this unorthodox office romance may need a second take.
Quinn Anderson is a nerd extraordinaire; she was raised on an unhealthy diet of video games, anime, cosplay, and comics from infancy. Her girlfriend swears her sense of humor is just a bunch of pop culture references wearing a trench coat. She stays true to her nerd roots in writing and in life, frequently drawing inspiration from her many fandoms and writing fanfic: the cheesier the trope, the better. She's attended conventions on three separate continents and now considers herself a career geek. May she live long and prosper.

Okay, I just have to say how much I'm enjoying this author! Last month I read On Solid Ground and was definitely impressed, so I couldn't resist when I saw this one come up on NetGalley. While Cam Boy is part of the Murmur Inc. series the author states it can be read as a stand-alone and she is 100% correct - though I'm quickly going to purchase books 1 & 2 in the series... and everything else Quinn Anderson has written.
First off, I'm just going to say what a great premise this was for a novel. (Frankly, I had a hard time ridding it from my mind after reading Watching and Wanting last year, and if you've read that one you will know why.) So Anderson goes somewhere different with this story, don't be expecting a bunch of on camera scenes, the heat between the two MCs is hot and very well done and I was quite satisfied ;P
The Cam Boy is Josh, who finds himself in a dead-end job he hates, living from paycheck to paycheck, and no prospects on the horizon. Josh figures porn is easy money but when he tries it - well you'll see the reasons he decides it's not for him. So when he's offered the chance to try the solo on-camera stuff, that is a much better fit for him.
Mike, the porn star and Josh's love interest, is a jaded three year veteran of the porn business. Anderson does a great job of establishing this character and setting the stage for the big changes that come over Mike’s life.
I enjoyed watching these two work their ways through everything that happens to them. The whole story flows smoothly and just left me wanting to read more books by Quinn Anderson. Lucky for me I’ve got New Heights already loaded on my Kindle.

I really enjoyed this one, it made a nice change to read a realistic portrayal of the porn industry in a romance, to see that it wasn't all fun and games, but long hours and at times not all that enjoyable. Then you have the chemistry between John and Mike which was palpable and Josh's big mouth causing awkward conversations. I would have liked to see how the author would have written Mike as the bottom, but aside from that, this was a lot better than I expected.
I received a copy of this title to read and review for Wicked Reads
4 Guilty Pleasure stars.
Cam Boy is the 3rd installment of the Murmur Inc. series, and can easily be read as a standalone. The only tie to each book is the Murmur Inc. setting, featuring Collette the producer.
What I enjoy the most about this series is the levity- it doesn't take itself too seriously, offering many laughs and steamy scenes, yet the characters pack an emotional punch. I'm sucker for the gut-punch sensation of rejection, and Cam Boy did this to me a few times over.
Josh is broke, and obsessed with the porn industry after he learned an ex-coworker of his joined Murmur Inc. He's always checking their website for an audition, and is floored when he gets a callback.
Josh isn't prepared when he meets Mike, one of Murmur Inc.'s top seasoned actors. Awkward hilarity, with a mix of rejection ensues, strumming my emotions across the board.
What I appreciated the most is how a series set in the sex industry doesn't glamorize nor vilify it. In fact, this installment more so than the others, shows both the pros and cons of the industry with accuracy yet compassion.
It's obvious that Josh and Mike have amazing chemistry, their opposing personalities feeding into one another. To me, this read as the beginning of what will blossom.
My only complaint was the tedious inner monologue that took away from the story itself. Both Josh and Mike would mull over their redundant thoughts for pages on end, causing me to become bored, to the point I found myself skimming to the nearest action/dialogue. This is when their voices melded until they were almost indistinguishable from each other. While in action and dialogue, they were very much separate characters.
I love the setting and the premise, and I can't wait to see what else the author has in store for this series.
It started out so good. I always enjoy Quinn's characters.
Josh is looking for a way out of ramen noodle life. After learning that one of his previous co-workers joined the porn industry he decides to give it a shot himself.
Mike is a porn star. He's been in the industry for three years when most people seldom last three months. He knows the ropes.
When Mike is asked to audition and mentor Josh, sparks fly. The chemistry is undeniable. But so is the friction. (no pun intended) ;-)
Josh is too green. Mike is too professional. How do they find common ground?
I loved Josh. He often seemed more mature than his 21 years. Then sometimes his youthfulness would peek through.
It was harder to warm up to Mike. I found him a little self-important. Not narcissistic, just more focused on what was good for himself.
An HIV scare brought the two back together on hiatus from performing while they waited for testing. I'm honestly not impressed with the way that was presented at first. Although later on some misconceptions were corrected.
I was very impressed with how the porn industry and it's performers were portrayed with respect and a decided lack of condemnation.
Overall I enjoyed the story. ***3.5 stars***
Now I'm off to find Josh and Mike's "channel". ;-)

If you look up the words "naive", "reckless", and "overly confident" in the dictionary, you might find Josh Clemmons' picture there.
If you've read the previous books in this series, you might remember Josh as the guy who works with Pete at the coffee shop. Additionally, you might recall that Pete works for Murmur Inc, a company that makes pornographic movies, but also provides Phone Sex Operators, and apparently, on-camera live action.
Josh, stuck in a dead-end, low-wage job, partly because college just wasn't for him, looks for more excitement and more dough. Thus he's been looking online at Murmur Inc. for open audition calls, and wouldn't you know, his luck is about to change.
Hastily cobbling together a resume, he's so confident that he's perfect for porn and will be chosen to perform that he. Quits. His. Job. before he even has an interview lined up. Overly confident? Reckless? You betcha.
Also naive. So very naive, because he thinks if Pete can be a porn star, so can he. Like, surely, anyone can be in porn, right? Lots of sex and you get paid? Why wouldn't everyone do this, amirite? How hard could it be?
Right.
Josh's dreams of being the next AVN winner are dashed quickly when he realizes after his first scene he's not quite cut out for that kind of career.
Mike Harwood, on the other hand, has been an adult film entertainer for quite some time. Filming both straight and gay movies, he's so used to faking attraction that he's no longer sure what's real and what isn't. I could tell that he was approaching burnout, but he wasn't quite there yet.
Josh and Mike meet on set for Josh's first and last scene, after which Josh crawls back to the coffeeshop and begs for his job back. Which he does, lucky him. Neither can get the encounter out of their mind, but Josh isn't going to make any movies, and Mike is busy filming the next scene. Josh also gets even more lucky when Colette, the owner of Murmur Inc, offers him cam work - something he can do from his rented room, on his own laptop, but still get paid. Josh agrees - jacking off seems simple enough when one hasn't to contort himself, and getting paid to jack off - what more could he want?
The author has done really good research for her books and gives good insights to the industry. What we see on film is hard work for the actors, and there is a constant fear of STDs that is just part of daily life. It's also true that the straight porn is less likely to utilize condoms, and thus the actors undergo frequent tests to ensure they're as safe as can be. When Mike is told that one of his recent co-actors on the M/F set has been tested positive, he is immediately sent for a test, and anyone with whom he performed since then must also be tested. Additionally, until he tests negative, he cannot perform with anyone else.
And so Josh and Mike reconnect. With Mike laying low and waiting the appropriate potential incubation time, he's got time on his hands, right?
There's a bit of angst among the giggle-snorts, and Josh's antics kept me largely entertained. This series is campy, cheesy fun for the most part, though there are some serious undertones between the lines. With each book, the author offers an unflinching look at the porn industry, and reminds us in subtle ways that what we as consumers see is only the glossy outer layers, and not the seedy underbelly of the beast. Mike knows that his days as a performer have a sell-by date, and he tries to share that knowledge with Josh.
Mike also has a secret he's keeping from Josh - which I thought was going to create a bit more of an issue when it comes out, but thankfully Josh isn't just naive and reckless, he's also kind and forgiving.
There's a happy ending here too, which I appreciated very much. It was nice to see them in a good place in the end, in love and happy.
I couldn't tell if there's going to be another book in this series, but I sure as heck hope so. This was a fun read!
** I received a free copy of this book from its publisher via Netgalley. A positive review was not promised in return. **
Delicious read. At first it felt a little messy but no that was my own head lol. Loved it. A little peek at the porn side of filmmaking. Josh wants to be a movie star so after sending over what they wanted to know and see, he gets an invitation. There he meets Mike the porn star who will help him.
Well....let me say things are running different than Josh expected... he is absolute naive but o so sweet and honest. Mike is very impressed and can't get Josh out of his head. Ditto for Josh. Josh ends up as a cam boy and that's more his thing. He has a private admirer Martin...
Endearing personalities I loved immediately. Really lovely story it was funny, sexy, endearing, wonderful honest and written like all above.
Cam Boy is the 3rd book in the series and can be read as a stand alone easily. Cam Boy centers around Josh who decides he wants to be a porn star because he likes the idea of the amount of money they make in a short amount of time. He is clueless when it comes to what is involved and does no research before going in for his audition. I'll be honest I wasn't a big fan of Josh in the beginning of this book - he was a bit selfish and definitely immature. His audition is set up with Mike who has been in the adult entertainment business for years and has become a bit jaded. The two have instant chemistry but Josh is nervous and clueless. Mike tries to help him out and get him to relax during their initial audition and when the two kiss the chemistry explodes enough that Josh gets a call back and an opportunity for his first role and he is once again paired up with Mike. To say things don't go well between the two of them is a bit of an understatement and there are lots of mixed signals, hurt feelings and miscommunication but considering they don't really know each other that's to be expected. Josh decides that porn really isn't for him. I thought the way the author continued the plot so that Josh and Mike stay in contact was very well done. I'm not sure I would have believed the two of them intentionally contacting each other for any other reason. I also loved the way their friendship grew. I don't want to say too much more about that without giving too much away.
Thankfully Josh grew up a lot in this book and by the end I really liked him. I also liked Mike and the two had some great chemistry together. It was sweet with just a bit of angst and I enjoyed the secondary characters as well.
A copy of this book was provided to me by Netgalley and the publisher with no requirements for a review. I voluntarily read this book and my comments here are my honest opinion.
Despite the "warning" from the author (see tweet -- apparently even she knows my hatred towards 'baby' as endearment *LOL*) I enjoyed Cam Boy, the third book from Anderson's series about sex workers industry, more so than both its predecessors. Sure, there were things here that displeased me a bit, but in overall, it was a quick entertaining read -- proven that I read it straight for 2+ hours without putting it down.
Cam Boy focuses on Josh who decides that being a porn star might be really helpful for him financially, and Mike, a porn star vet whom Josh meets for the first time during his audition. Since Josh is pretty much bewildered about what the job entails, Mike puts himself in a position as Josh's mentor. Even though Mike knows that it's a bad, BAD, idea to involve personal feelings towards a newbie who might or might not be successful in the industry. Well, guess what, things happen ...
Initially, I was annoyed with how Josh approached the potential work as a porn star. I felt like Josh not doing enough research, and a bit dismissive about the rules of the job. ALTHOUGH, it might also because Josh was so very new. I guess I wasn't happy with Josh thinking of applying the job simply because, "HEY, EASY MONEY!". He grew on me though -- and I admit, Josh and Mike have lovely chemistry.
I loved Mike -- the way he was willing to help and tutor Josh, even if he gave Josh a LOT of mixed signals. Or that "secret" thing he did to keep eyes on Josh ... because really, I thought it was a bit creepy(!). I liked that even if Mike said he was a bit jaded but he didn't come out as someone disrespectful towards the industry as a whole.
Their relationship progressed in a good pace, added with cast of supporting characters in and around both men. Oh, for a book about sex workers ... I thought the number of sex done in this book was just enough (not too many, yes!). As for the 'baby' endearment, I know how to work around it *grin*
The ARC is provided by the publisher via Netgalley for an exchange of fair and honest review. No high rating is required for any ARC received.
Cam Boy is book three in Quinn Anderson’s Murmur Inc series . I started reading this story on a whim and I honestly didn’t have high expectations of it considering the fact I read the first book and thought it forced, immature and whiney. The first book also featured two different main characters dealing with different circumstances so I’ll refrain mentioning that book going forth.
Cam Boy, was a fun read. Despite the cheese factor and the many times Josh’s antics caused me to roll my eyes a few times.
Josh , is a young college dropout tired of earning minimum wage at the coffee shop he works for. Josh has a friend who works at Murmur Inc and after seeing how successful his friend has become, Josh decides to pursue a career in porn, after all; how hard could it possibly be? When Josh learns that Murmur Inc is holding open auditions, he abruptly quits his reliable 9-5 to pursue his dreams.
I admire that about Josh. Not very many people are willing to go out on a limb and risk it all on a long shot. This action speaks to his youth and naiveté because older people with responsibilities would never do something so reckless nor impulsive. This action is also why it was so easy to fall in love with Josh and his immature behavior.
Mike Harwood has established himself as a professional power top porn model. There’s something about Josh, the kid with the smart mouth and alluring blue eyes that captivates Mike the minute he laid eyes on him. Mike has become pretty jaded since his last relationship however and isn’t looking to having another one considering after the jealousy he’s had to deal with from his exes over his career. Despite these thoughts, Mike makes himself available to be the first onscreen lover Josh ever has.
The experience both mind-blowing and humbling helps Josh realize that porn is not for him. When offered to be a cam boy instead, a model left to his own devices, calling his own shots, Josh, jumps at the opportunity and of course, promptly makes mistakes that pull on Mike’s protective instincts to once again “teach” Josh but this time Mike uses a fake identity.
Josh’s naivete and antics coupled with Mike’s "been there done that" attitude made this a fun enjoyable romance to watch unfold. There were a couple things I didn’t care for in the story. While it was unavoidable for these two to have sex for the first time on camera, I didn’t like the “almost” locations they could have gotten it on at. I also take issue with the serious situations raised in regards to the adult entertainment industry and the way the matter was handled read a little too light and dismissive for my taste. Considering the fact this book doesn’t take itself seriously or meant to come across as a teachable moment I decided to enjoy it for what it was. Escapism.
Let me tell you a secret: I'm quickly becoming a Quinn Anderson fangirl. I first read All of the Above last year and have been snapping up every new release while also picking up her backlist when I can. Her writing is so easy and fun, her characters relatable and realistic and perfectly imperfect. Cam Boy is no exception. This is the third book in the Murmur, Inc. series but can most definitely be read as a standalone.
What shone in this book is the chemistry between Josh and Mike. I may have been at times fairly "meh" about the characters individually, but the chemistry between them was written so incredibly well. Their scenes together jumped off the page. The relationship building here is slow, which juxtaposed nicely with the way the physical aspect of their - acquaintanceship - ratcheted up immediately. There is no insta-love here (insta-lust, yes, but oh is it done well), and the tension between the guys doesn't get resolved until the very end of the story, and I loved that. I can't say this book had UST, but maybe it had unresolved romantic tension? URT? That sounds gross.
There were a few things I rolled my eyes at - an STI scare and the way Mike and Josh get to know each other (super vague but I'm trying not to spoil!) - as they happened, but by the end I liked the way those things were handled and treated by Mike and Josh as well as supporting characters. I think what pulled this down from a higher rating for me is the wrap-up/telling-by-dialogue at the end. I hate when explanations of story, character thoughts, etc. are given to the reader in big chunks of obvious dialogue. It comes across as a bit... lazy? Maybe? Like, there's a lot to wrap-up here but rather than having another chapter and showing these things organically, there's just a couple pages of dialogue so we can hurry up and get to the end. I'd much rather the organic version.
However, the witty writing and snappy dialogue keeps this story going and I didn't want to put this book down once. I've since gone back and read Hotline, the first Murmur, Inc. story (psst: I liked Cam Boy much better) and have the second, Action, on my TBR. Quinn Anderson continues to become one of my go-to authors for fun, quick reads that leave me smiling.
An advanced copy of this book was received through NetGalley for review on OMGReads.
3.5 Stars Quinn Anderson is a new to me author and I haven’t read the two previous novels in the series. I had no preconceived notions, except knowing books about porn stars can often be a gamble. I was pleasantly surprised by a very realistic-seeming depiction of an adult-film occupation and a focus on other, less considered pitfalls of the job. The plot itself was fairly original, avoiding many of the usual plot devices used with this theme. It’s also a character driven plot, however I was less than enamored with the characters.
Josh was difficult for me to like, kind of annoyingly dense and prone to running off at the mouth. Mike is a nice guy, getting bored by his work until he’s snapped out of his ennui by the brash and naive Josh. I had a hard time seeing much about Josh to attract Mike, and couldn’t feel their chemistry, myself. Surprisingly, in a story about sex work, it’s a fairly slow burn for the couple and moderate sex scenes. Forming a connection came about in a rather unusual fashion, and aside from the awkward film debut, they don’t meet face-to-face again for weeks. It took a while but Josh’s character does improve, although it was a short period of time for him to have grown up that much. It’s all logical though, as he and Mike make changes to allow them to move forward together.
There really isn’t much negative I would say about this story; it’s well written with good pacing and the positives I’ve noted. It just didn’t offer me enough in the way of emotional tension or conflict to grab my interest. It seemed a bit too bland, in spite of the few obstacles the author put in place. It was enjoyable and engaging enough to hold my interest. I would recommend it for the appeal of a fresh take on the porn star and protégé trope.

Cam Boy is a rom com M/M Romance, and let me just say, I absolutely loved it! It was so different to most stories I have read. One reason being that it is set around Murmur Inc, which just happens to be a pornography company. Now it’s not every day you read a book set around porn. It gives us a glimpse of how unglamorous the industry is.
Josh is a young guy with huge expectations of the porn industry. He is a little naive, and tends to put his foot in his mouth a lot. Mike/Sean is a seasoned worker in this industry. He is comes across as confident and a bit bossy. In chapter 5 I kind of wanted to really slap Mike. As the story goes on my love for Mike grows and grows. By the end I absolutely love him! He is so sweet and thoughtful and so incredibly cute! I loved the chemistry between the characters. It really burned hot when they were together, even I was getting butterflies in my stomach! The story was funny and I just really loved how different it was compared to other stories out the today. I really need to go back and read the other books from the Murmur Inc series, and I really look forward to more from Quinn! In fact I have another book of hers waiting to be read right now! If you like M/M Romance than I think you will love this one!
Mike and Josh meet when Josh goes to an interview at Murmur Inc. to audition as one of Murmur’s newest porn stars. Struggling to make ends meet he sees this as the solution to all his money woes. Will this solve Josh’s issues or turn out to be a lot more than he bargained for?
I have absolutely loved this series and Quinn Anderson is quickly becoming one of my go to authors, but unfortunately, this story wasn’t as good as the others in the series for me. I loved Mike and Josh, and together they were amazing. The chemistry between them was electric, but I wanted more page time with them as a couple. More getting to know each other time. I wish there had been more interaction between them.
The story was well-written and an easy read. Not only did I love Josh and Mike, but the story had some interesting secondary characters, some I’m hoping to see more of in the future. Although not my favorite in the series, which can be read as standalones, it was still an enjoyable and recommendable read!

I was given a copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.
This is a fun story of the relationship between a veteran porn star and a cocky but thoroughly unprepared wannabe. There isn’t a huge age gap between Josh and Mike but Mike’s experiences make him seem much older.
There are some brilliant moments in this story but it lacks some of the humour I’ve enjoyed in the first two books. With an HIV scare and Mike questioning his future at Murmur Inc, there are a few more serious threads in this story. The characters and their experiences feel more realistic in this book and while I loved the ridiculous moments in the first two stories, I feel like I was able to connect to Josh and Mike as characters more easily in this one.
As always, this book is sex positive and non-judgemental. I liked Josh’s friends and roommates but we don’t see too much of them. This is a fun and slightly angsty read. I love Quinn Anderson’s writing and this series continues to make me smile.

Kris – ☆☆☆☆ My second story in the Murmur Inc. series and I think I liked Hotline better. Still a bit too much attention to mundane detail, such as keys making plop sounds and navigating spiral staircases and wireless mice. These over-descriptors turn me off the story a bit, which is sad because the story wasn't bad! I hate when I have to skim!
Josh was a little flaky, a little wish washy, but Mike Harwood is a good solid character. Taking young Josh under his wing (not completely magnanimously... he is pretty to look at, after all). Mike tries to show Josh the ropes in the porn trade. Josh comes off smug at first but finds porn isn't the cake job he thought it would be. But Mike, he's the whipped topping Josh is hoping to lick off his fingers. Not being able to separate real feelings from porn reactions, Josh is genuine when Mike isn't even sure what that is anymore. Mike realizing he's a bit jaded and Josh realizing porn is hard work, the two seem too different to hit it off but have really good chemistry. I really like these guys together, Mike is a bit bossy and Josh (well, and me too) likes that… a lot. Add in a bit of an STI scare, the two make hard life decisions and hope they end up together when the dust settles. Great epilogue and perfect ending, so I did enjoy the read!

Considering how lackluster I found the first book of the series, and that I liked but didn’t love the second, I was interested enough to request this book but not quite hopeful that I’d love it. I wouldn’t necessarily say it’s a favorite, but I definitely enjoyed this book a lot and found the characters fun and dynamic.
What I enjoy the most about Anderson's characters is how very consistent they are, and Mike and Josh are no exception. I am surprised so many reviewers gave this four stars rather than five. Great characters with interesting character arcs in an interesting (and thoughtful) plot, with hot sex AND some hilarious moments? That's five stars from me. Recommended. But only if you enjoy humor! (And hot sex.) (And good plot.)
The plot summary for the book is so accurate that I don't think you need me to rehash that in a review. They have a meet-awful but are still drawn to each other, Josh decides porn isn't for him, takes up cam work for the same company instead. This is the bare bones plot of the book and, despite the porn industry setting, honestly the least interesting thing about it.
CAM BOY is Quinn Anderson's third Murmur, Inc. novel, and the other two also take place in the orbit of the same company, but all can be read as standalones. Murmur, Inc. produces an array of sexual services and content, everything from pornographic video to photography to phone sex to camming. One of my favorite parts of the book was actually when Josh went to his boss (the owner) to quit. She nodded, said she understood it wasn't a good fit, and offered him an alternative. It's the sort of thing you don't see often in these sorts of books. Usually, the stripper leaves the industry for good and often with some sex-shaming stigma attached. This entire novel was blissfully free of that.
You're waiting to hear what's more interesting than shooting porn? Most of the book. The porn shoot scenes are so awkward and clinical that it's a wonder Josh and Mike retain any of their chemistry. It's clear that Josh doesn't know what he's doing, and you get a distinct sense of second-hand embarrassment for the poor guy as the director tells him to move his arm here, stop doing that, do more of this other thing. Mike is kind and helpful, but it's ultimately still a job and it's not the right one for Josh.
The emotional and romantic core of the book is in the last third, but without the buildup and stage-setting of the first two-thirds, it wouldn't have made sense, so the pacing didn't feel off. Several small negotiations of trust and consent were important and memorable, so I'd like to highlight a couple of them here.
When Josh starts his cam channel, he leaves it open to his local area and shares too much personal information about himself. Mike happens to be scrolling through the Murmur, Inc. site and sees Josh's channel, then sees that Josh isn't protecting himself. He joins, buys a private session, and then uses that time to teach Josh (anonymously) how to better protect himself. Part of this is because Josh's character has quite a bit of growing up to do and is impulsive/reckless in comparison to Mike's years of experience. Part of it is because Mike wants to spend time with Josh. When Mike tells Josh what he's done, they talk about it like two adults who care about one another and work through their feelings and motivations. It's all very reasonable and not at all the "big misunderstanding" that it could have been.
Later, when they finally (I DO MEAN FINALLY) have sex that isn't being scripted, Mike uses his sexual experience in a really refreshing way. He doesn't just magically know what Josh will like, he tries different things and asks for feedback until he gets it right. This might have been my favorite part of the entire book - Mike does not have the stereotypical magic romance-hero penis. He has a sincere motivation to make his partner feel pleasure. So much better.
CAM BOY isn't perfect, however. Josh's attitude toward porn and personal safety really bothered me at some points. As mentioned, he's got some growing up to do. He thinks porn will just be having sex on camera, not hours of challenging physical activity and acting. He quits his job after getting an audition with Murmur and makes some other questionable choices. This could all be written off as a personality thing and part of his character arc, but I was really bothered by the fact that he didn't take it seriously after that, either. He obviously didn't read the information that Murmur gave him about running his channel, and it felt like a forced plot device to get Mike into his cam channel.
There's also an HIV scare, which is mostly handled with care, but the author left out any mention of PrEP, which I'd assume porn actors would be on. Murmur has strict rules about their actors being tested regularly and various safety measures, but there's no mention of what something that's become standard for sex workers or those at high risk of contracting HIV.
Overall, CAM BOY is a diverting novel that, for all that it's set in the sex industry, is definitely more romance than erotica. I'm not sure I'd put it at erotic romance even, though the off-camera antics between Mike and Josh are quite hot.
This was actually a pretty good book. I'm a little hesitant when it comes to books about porn or the industry. Not that it's bad or anything but because it can become...cheesy? Maybe that's the right word. But this was good. And I've never read this author before either so I actually want to read more of her stuff. Now if you notice, this is the 3rd book in this series. It can be read as a standalone and you won't miss anything. I've not read the first two and wasn't lost or confused at all.
Josh is so tired of being so broke. He can barely pay the bills and he's only renting out a room as it is. In a house that's falling apart at the seams. An ex employee he had worked with had left the job to join the porn industry full time and seeing how much money they could make, thought he might like to do that too. He just has to have a spot open in the one he wants to work for. When a spot opens, he fills out an application and goes through the roof with excitement when he is replied to for an audition. But it's nothing what he thought it was. The first entertainer he encounters comes of cocky and asinine but makes Josh feel thinks he's not really felt before. The lady running things is never happy with anything he does and the first major shoot he does, he was left hanging. The cocky, asinine costar, Mike, he got to work with made him feel he was special during the shoot only to treat him like crap after. He knows this job isn't for him, but he doesn't want to pass up money he may make. And his feelings for Mike, even though Mike can be a dick, are becoming more intense. He feels the chemistry there but doesn't know what to do. After a bad health announcement, he talks to the boss of Murmur Inc and she gives him the option of Cam work, which he wants and immediately takes to. Now if he can just figure out how to fix things with Mike and see if it goes anywhere.
It's kinda funny how people always assume the life of a porn star is so easy and money filled. They have no idea what it really entails to make a short or even longer film that everyone enjoys. The hours upon hours of being posed certain ways while trying to maintain a hard-on is definitely not easy. And don't forget most have to take pills just to keep it up and going. The hours of going to a gym to make sure your body looks right, the eating right or not eating at all before a shoot to make sure your cleaned out lol. It's not at all glamorous. As Josh found out quick. But I understand where he was coming from. When you've constantly had to go through poverty, a chance to make good money is appealing. And anyone can have sex right? Josh was in for a rude awakening. But I feel for him. He just wants to make it in this world. He gave up on finishing school after getting a lot done and now he's thinking he should go back. But without the money, he can't. He can barely afford to feed himself much less anything else. Now he has feelings for someone in the industry, when warned not to. But the chemistry is there. But man Mike is a jerk. He blows hot and cold so much. I feel for Mike too. Mike has been at this job for a while and he's pretty much seen it all. It's left him cynical and rude to most people. He's tired, he burned out and trying to figure out what to do with his life. He's still young. He needs to get into something before his time is up. But what? And this this innocent, bratty young man walks into his job and his life and smacked him between the eyes. And he fights with everything he is. But Josh makes him feel something he's not felt maybe ever. And for the first time in a long time, he feels alive. But he knows this industry and relationships don't mix. But darn it all if his heart is letting it go. So now they have to figure out if they can make it work and if it will be worth it.
I tell you, one thing I really like about this book is that it didn't pull punches with certain things. When you are in a business like that, the health risks are astronomical. You have to be oh so careful. Testing all the time, condoms, etc. And even that doesn't make it safe. Being with that many partners can leave its damages. And I like that this book addresses that. It doesn't take up the whole book, so don't worry, but it does make a point of it and I think it's great the author didn't leave that out. A really good book. I recommend for sure.
The colorful cast of Murmur Inc is back to show that love IS possible in the world of adult entertainment. When the new boy on the block finds himself drawn to the veteran star sparks fly in this romance that’s fun, flirty, with a bit of seriousness thrown in to fully invest readers in their bumpy road to HEA. From start to finish moments of sweetness and charm are balanced with real life issues related to the industry in a tale that kept me waiting with bated breath until the very end.
Josh Clemmons is young and a bit uncertain about what he wants to be when he grows up. Being poor and tired of struggling to make ends meet has Josh looking for a career that will make him rich and when his porn obsession leads to an unexpected audition he jumps at the chance to be a star. While his audition doesn’t go quite as he planned it’s the connection he feels for a veteran actor that really changes his life. Real life issues soon war with the hearts and flowers of romance in a journey that’s sometimes frustrating but always realistic as I rooted for them every step of the way. Josh is larger than life, a bundle of energy and poor decisions, but I was still utterly charmed by him. He was like a puppy at times, eager to please and quick to be hurt by criticism. He was quick to jump, allowed himself to act before he thought, but when it comes to feelings and honesty he wears his heart on his sleeve. Though Josh’s life has been tough and he’s gotten a few bruises along the way he still picks himself up and rolls with the punches which made me like him all the more.
Mike Harwood had an equally tough upbringing because of his looks and his bisexuality, but with his success in the adult entertainment world he’s the one now laughing all the way to the bank. It’s been three years of making a name for himself, three years of going through the motions like a pro, but lately it’s all starting to feel fake. He’s become jaded, frustrated, and is also looking towards a life away from the business. The moment he meets Josh though his life changes irrevocably as he becomes a mentor...and eventually more. Helping Josh becomes his mission, feeding off his energy becomes his addiction, in a relationship that takes a unique path to HEA. Mike’s a bit cold when readers first meet him, his annoyance on full display. The moment he meets Josh though a softer side emerges, a more protective side that has him making decisions he never thought he’d make before. Being with Josh made Mike more personable, more charming, and by the turn of the final page I couldn’t picture them with anyone else.
This was an entertaining story set in the fascinating world of adult entertainment. Ms. Anderson vividly depicted this sensual world with all its good and bad realities, nothing was sugarcoated, and I became quickly immersed in the lives of this unlikely little family. Though I liked Josh there were times that his melodramatic ways got a bit annoying. His naivete was also frustrating and had me constantly worrying for his safety as he first entered the adult entertainment world. Mike’s protective ways were much appreciated and a solid foundation for their burgeoning relationship. There was a lot of sensuality surrounding this story but not as many actual encounters as you’d think considering the setting. On a whole there’s a nice balance of sexiness and sweet romance that allows Josh and Mike to get to know each other after Josh’s initial audition, allows them to create a romance worth rooting for. Ultimately the Murmur Inc series is immensely likable with a unique setting and colorful characters that has me counting down the days until the next installment hits bookshelves.
Cam Boy was a pleasant surprise by a new-to-me author. Initially it was the cover that caught my eye, but the blurb sounded fun with a different set of characters and plotlines than I’d normally read. For the most part, Cam Boy delivered what I expected. Though this is the third book in the Murmur Inc. series, it easily works as a standalone.
I liked both main characters in Cam Boy. The pairing of the new-to-porn Josh with seasoned veteran Mike, though not unexpected, offered plenty of options for good banter and some humorous exchanges. Though Josh and Mike together made for a fun couple, I occasionally struggled with Josh’s characterization. Josh came across a bit immature and, while that made sense given his age, some of his naivety and actions were a bit over-the-top and pulled me out of the story. That said, I did like how Josh and Mike’s personalities and life outlooks contrasted. It gave their relationship some depth and offered plenty of areas for both characters to learn from each other and grow over the course of the book. I also enjoyed the plot and most of the conflicts, particularly the resolution in the final chapters.
Although I enjoyed many elements in Cam Boy and the ending was satisfying, it felt a little too quick a wrap. I ended up wishing the couple had more time and a chance to further develop their relationship on page once they resolved the issues and decided to pursue a committed partnership. Although I didn’t get quite the gratifying ending I was hoping for, I was happy the epilogue delivered a glimpse into the future and provided a solid happy-for-now ending.
Cam Boy was an easy read that offered interesting characters and conflicts to drive the plot. The quick pacing and dialogue complete with fun banter made this book hard to step away from, even though it occasionally had me rolling my eyes. I would have loved a bit more development between Josh and Mike, but I would definitely recommend this title to someone looking for a fun read that’s a bit different than many lighter romances.
My Review: This was an enjoyable book, but I'll admit that I do really love m/m stories set within the adult entertainment industry. For this one, Josh is trying to get into porn, but he does everything wrong in his application process and the woman in charge of hiring isn't giving him much of a break.
Mike is the pro in the story. He's been doing porn for three years and has made good money and still seems to enjoy the job overall. Getting paired up with Josh as a mentor at Josh's tryouts, though, turns Mike's whole world as he knows it upside down.
Josh is so lost. There were a lot of things that I liked about this book, but that was my favorite...it was good to see him mature throughout the book. I also liked his relationship with both his bosses and how the way they treated him evolved.
Mike's character was awesome in this book. I really liked how realistic he felt. He's very straightforward and honest about his life in porn...both with himself and with others. But he's also very aware of how other people can react to the fact...but never in a judgmental way. I liked how careful he was to never push Josh into something he might regret later and is so careful of him...since he knows that Josh isn't 100% in. He's the perfect mentor...even when Josh doesn't realize he's being mentored.
Everything about this story was written perfectly to give the guys a chance. I really enjoyed it and was thoroughly entertained by every minute of reading the book. I definitely recommend it!
I received a complimentary copy of this book in return for an honest review.
In the romance mood so I decided to finish this series and…. It was fine! It was steamy which I enjoyed, it was sex positive which I enjoyed and it was queer which I enjoyed. But also not stand out sooo take that how you will. 2.5
I received a copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads
My second story in the Murmur Inc series and I think I liked Hotline better. Still a bit too much attention to mundane detail, such as keys making plop sounds and navigating spiral staircases and wireless mouses. These over-descriptors turn me off the story a bit which is sad because the story wasn't bad! I hate when I have to skim! Josh was a little flaky, a little wish washy but Mike Harwood is a good solid character. Taking young Josh under his wing (not completely magnanimously...he is pretty to look at, after all). Mike tries to show Josh the ropes in the porn trade. Josh comes off smug at first but finds porn isn't the cake job he thought it would be. But, Mike, he's the whipped topping Josh is hoping to lick off his fingers. Not being able to separate real feelings from porn reactions Josh is genuine when Mike isn't even sure what that is anymore. Mike realizing he's a bit jaded and Josh realizing porn is hard work, the two seem too different to hit it off but have really good chemistry. I really like these guys together, Mike is a bit bossy and Josh (well, and me too) likes that, a lot. Add in a bit of an STI scare the two make hard life decisions and hope they end up together when the dust settles. Great epilogue and perfect ending, so I did enjoy the read!
Murmur Inc. Book 3 sees the return of minor character Joshua from Book 2. He was so bratty and annoying in Action, but he redeems himself in Cam Boy. Josh thinks he'll get an easy paying gig by venturing into porn, not realizing that industry isn't all fun and games. He meets and falls for his first scene partner, Mike. Mike tries to keep a professional distance and attitude with Josh, but he gets the feels too.
Cam Boy further delves into the behind-the-scenes, day-to-day operations of the porn industry, continuing with the theme of the Murmur Inc. series, in such a way that humanizes the people who work in that field and sheds light on the not so glamorous side. It's easy to view porn models as objects designed for the viewer's pleasure, and not people with actual feelings and lives outside of the manufactured sex. Quinn creates multidimensional characters that are relatable, not necessarily regarding working in porn, but in the daily struggles everyone goes through in their professional and personal lives.
I appreciate stories that address sensitive topics in a way that doesn't marginalize or depreciate the issue or people affected. Quinn treats such a topic with a sensitivity that conveys harsh reality, and yet at the same time with enough lightness as to not overwhelm and detract from the love story.
Josh's goofiness and lack of filter pairs nicely with Mike's serious, focused personality. I enjoyed the puns (who doesn't appreciate puns?) and the development of the connection between Josh and Mike. This one will definitely be a re-read for me.
The story is about a minimum wage coffee shop employee, Josh Clemmons, attempting to make better money in porn films made by Murmer Inc. Trying out for a demanding female director and business owner with one of the company’s professional stars, Mike Harwood, is less than promising, but Josh, under a horridly chosen porn name, films a few brief tryout films, but decides he isn’t good enough. It is not his looks. He’s handsome. It is the demands of making a film in front of a large crew, a director, and Mike, the demanding co-star in his first attempts. But, Murmur Studio’s owner still wants Josh as a “cam boy,” a person who performs to a paying online membership, chatting and self-pleasuring, before a computer camera at home. This is where Josh is fairly successful.
What makes Anderson’s book work is personalities. She is deft at creating believable odd characters. Readers lean more about the mouthy Josh and the demanding Mike. We also learn of some of the behind the scenes concerns in the porn film world. And, needless to say in a male/male romance, we learn about love with and without cameras rolling. Anderson’s book is an erotic joy to read, part serious, part comic, and part loving.
I was struggling a bit with this book. The first two books in this series I felt were kinda light. This book was a little too serious.
With the whole HIV scare. I’m all for realistic things happening. But, I wish that would have been said in the synopsis. I even reread the synopsis to see if I missed anything. Also too... other things I feel carried on over from book 2 (Action) in this series.
The internal dialogue was in issue for me in that book. And I feel carried on over into this book. I also wasn’t feeling Colette in this book either.
I didn’t enjoy Josh’s first time in front of the camera. I thought it was extremely cold. Yes, I know this book is trying to keep it real. But, I wanted a little fantasy in it to. I was feeling Mike in the beginning.... but after that scene.... he came off as a jerk to me.
As I read on... I just wasn’t falling in love with this book. It was just ok. The sex between them was hot. But... idk. I just wasn’t feeling them as a couple. It felt more business like between them.
