I was only interested in this book because I wanted to find out how to download movies from youtube into a file format that I can save on my computer. Here's what I learned: movies on youtube and other streaming video websites encode their movies as 'streaming' flash movies that cannot be downloaded directly. So what do you do if you see a video for a unique live musical performance and you want to get just the audio in order to burn to a music cd? Or what about downloading a music video that you can't see anywhere else anymore? The answer is vixy.net. Navigate your browser to vixy.net and copy and paste the location of the video URL and click convert. Vixy.net is super sweet because it's a free resource and it converts the files right there on-line so you don't have to download any software. It can convert the file in different video and audio formats too. When it's done converting the file you can download it to your PC to do what you like with it. The only downside to vixy.net is that the conversion and download speeds are kinda slow, so expect it to take a about 10 minutes for a 3-4 minute video. I gave this book two stars because I only read two paragraphs of it. The book seems like an instructive guide to socializing on youtube, so people interested in on-line socializing would find the book useful.
This book is painful to read. Here's how it begins:
"You've been there. You've seen it. You know that YouTube is hot--because it's cool. That's why you like it. But what makes YouTube so cool--and so hot? It's all about videos, and about sharing them."
Puke.
There is a small amount of useful information here, though nothing you couldn't find somewhere else or that couldn't be contained in a pamphlet some guy might hand you outside of a Gateway store urging you to join his cult of "YouTubers."
This book was published in 2007, so some of the information is outdated. Still, this is an easy introduction to people who have absolutely no experience with YouTube, whether it be watching or uploading videos. A lot of the advanced information I was looking for was included, but you could probably find it searching on Google. A great book to borrow from the library, but not one you necessarily should spend money on.
I wanted to see what this book was about, so I checked it out from the library. Its wasn't too bad. Although a lot of the information you can get for yourself by just playing around with YouTube. I did discover a few things with this book. I would really recommend this book to people who know next to nothing about YouTube and want to get started on making movies for themselves.
Great book -- Very informative! Provides detailed instructions and captured screen shots for how to access this media website. It provides info. for not only the very beginner (me), but more advanced users, as well.
It has useful info. My brother uses it because he has an account on youtube. (NarutoUzumaki9tails is his username.) It is also good for learning how to download YouTube vids onto your iPod. :)
This book could use an update since YouTube is an evolving thing and has changed in the years since the book was published. The book did have some useful information, but is someone is a beginner like this book is geared for, it might be hard to decide what is the updated equivalent of what it in the book. In a newer version of the book, I would encourage adding something about the ever changing algorithms that YouTube uses and their new copyright detection software. I would also like to see ways to promote viewership and more recommendations about equipment and software to invest in and maybe include interviews with YouTubers.
