Once again, Sean's home has been attacked by one of the Councils, only this time they've committed what they hoped would be an overwhelming force. While Sean and his family win the fight, Sean has been seriously wounded and taken out of action. For Roxy and the others, saving Sean's life has become the priority, but there are still things that must be done to secure their victory. Those tasks fall to Sean's other wives as they pick up where Sean left off.

While the Vestibulum may have lost this last battle, they are be no means giving up on the war. They know that they've hurt Sean, so their leaders are hoping that without his leadership, they can launch a new attack and kill him before he has the chance to recover. Word of Sean's difficulties has also spread to some of his other enemies, who are also keen to try and capitalize on these events.

Thankfully, Sean has allies, and they are moving to try and save his life. But can they get there in time?

I'm new to the Harem / LitRPG thing (If I'd known more about LitRPG when I wrote Shadow, I might have incorporated more elements of that into it).
I have a FT job, so I work on this when I can. Hopefully the next one will be even better.

The final book of the first arc of the Valens Legacy is greatly disappointing. It starts on a good note, picking up with the battle that the last book ended on as our heroes try to beat back the attack on their compound and save Sean Valens. Then it gets even better as two serious problems are set up for Sean’s wives and friends to resolve if they are to save his life and preserve the cause of rescuing the lycans from slavery. Unfortunately, roughly half way through the book, all of this starts to fall apart as the author apparently got tired of writing and resolves these serious problems in totally unsatisfactory ways. These quick endings to the two main crises (one of which literally qualifies as a deus ex machina) free Stryvant up to spend the last third of the novel in wrapping up all the current loose ends to set the stage for the next arc of the story. There is absolutely no tension—unless you count the large number of sex scenes that do nothing to advance the story. The whole last half of the book gives the impression that Stryvant had grown tired of writing this arc and wanted to finish it as quickly as he could. This should have been a lot better.

Nice ending!

It was like book 5 and 6 was cut into, we stopped at a scene and suddenly picked up were we left off. I really liked how everything get settled though. The author showed how competent the Valens women were and really liked it. Jan also left breadcrumbs for another arc, it was subtle but I managed to see them. The first arc dealed with the wizards and witches, the second might do with other supernaturals.

Thanks for the ride Jan Stryvant!

As the last book in the first story arc of the series, I'm looking at the overall impression of the way the books have developed in addition to the book itself in this regard, and while they have their appeal, they also still have a lot of problems.

The appeal for this book was that lo and behold, when the main protagonist isn't rushing to add yet another new woman he only just met to his harem as another wife, his current wives actually get a chance to DO SOMETHING and develop as characters beyond the list of tropes they each represent as ideal girlfriend/wife material. They actually get to show aspects of their personalities and how they mesh with eachother and other characters instead of spending most of their time sexing the protagonist or talking about how amazing he is and how badly they want to sex him.

Paired with a focus on the villain characters and more on the other secondary characters, this has the most actually going on and holds the most development within the span of a single installment compared to any of the previous books. This is very much a good thing, but also very much a bad thing in that the only reason it all came about the way it did was because the protagonist was in a coma through a good four-fifths of the book. Then it went right back to the wives fawning over him and him solving everything without much effort. Again.

I want to like the main character, but every other thing out of his mouth in regards to his wives sounds like something someone who never actually flirted with a woman before would imagine coming off as suave and teasing, and falls flat just about every time. Everything else is either him somehow making huge leaps in magical development without any real trial or error beforehand and nine times out of ten it all goes perfectly for him, or him being cocky and brash somehow making everyone around him see him as almost a messiah character. Overall it makes the whole series so far read like a very overworked, overly indulgent ego-trip for the author.

The previous failings of the prior books still exist in this one, though not as grievously or obviously in most regards. The dialogue by other characters is perfectly fine, but anything with the protagonist and his wives always loops back to cheesy flirting and always in the most tone-deaf ways for the given scenes. It goes past being campy in the fun way and nearly up to cringy, not helped by the fact that this author still is in desperate need of a content and grammar editor. Every scene that is supposed to be high energy or dramatic, all of a sudden every spoken sentence ends IN EXCLAMATION POINTS! Because thats how people talk when things get exciting! Or when they're just flirting badly,or talking about things that sound like recanting an office meeting! But its supposed to be exciting so exclamation points!

And the author has gone all-in with calling the entire race of animal shapeshifters "lycans" despite how ignorant it comes off as and how badly it pulls the reader out of the story every time it shows up on the page. It'd be like calling the whole race of fairies "leprechauns", even the taller non-Irish associated ones or all the magic users "necromancers" even though not a single one of them summon the undead though any of the books. It just comes off as a bad writing decision and why the author persists with it, I haven't a clue.

In summation, while there are some high points and interesting premise ideas in the books of the first arc in this series, the lack of proper editing and the content choices made for the story lore paired with how skewed the depiction of the protagonist and his harem comes off all just serves to make the series feel like a young adult fantasy story that got pushed through before it was publish-ready. I had hoped to see some improvements as it developed further, and while this book technically did so it also dropped said improvements and went right back to how things were before by the last fifth of the book so I can't really say the author has been improving.

My final rating on this book and the series overall is 3 and 1/2 stars, which Amazon doesn't let us mark unfortunately. It's got some good parts, some okay parts, but also a lot of awkward choices that drag the whole premise right down when it doesn't have to. I very much doubt I'll be of the mind to continue with this series any further in the future.

End of Valens 1st Story Arc (Cool Didn’t know that)

Well I think this book wrapped up pretty nicely as Sean is the Lion King of Nevada.. mostly Reno but I think he will travel to Vegas and other Areas. I loved learning more about the Lions (1st Lion and his family) and their traditions, history,etc.. especially how they are trying to fix their mistakes. I’m glad they opted out of their original deal with the Mage covens, and lycans are almost FREE! Sean has like a butt ton of wives and 3 are preg! Plus we got to meet the Fae side of the family, I like the Pooka and want to know more about them. I still don’t get the LitRPG thing and the stats but maybe I will play a game again and explore it. I mean I played RPG games like Final Fantasy but when they got super complicated and controllers started having either joysticks and more than 4 buttons I got lost 😂. I have an iPad and have played some games but I Like point & click adventures, platformers, exploring games.. puzzles and match 3/4. Haven’t played RPG since PlayStation 2... or even Super Nintendo.. hah now you are wondering how old I am..? I grew up loving Sci Fi and fantasy from my Mom and zombies and Gore from my Dad but I was always an avid reader..could read before Kindergarden. Anyways now you know a little more about me and why I read the stories and enjoy what I do.

This book was probably the least like the other books in the series. For one thing Shaun was recovering from his injuries from book 5 for a good portion of the story. This lead to his wives leading more of the story. Pretty much every single one of his wives is kick-ass in their own way. There was a lot of suspense in the first half of the book: Shaun is hurt and may be dying, how are they going to save him. Since he is hurt, now may be the perfect time for his enemies to strike. How are Roxy and her sister-wives going to save Shaun and protect him prepare for a new attack at the same time? The solution to those 2 issues was sort of anti-climactic. Then after Shaun was better (it is not a spoiler alert to assume this since there are more books in the series), he goes around attempting to free the rest of the lycans - which again seemed a little too easy. There was much less sex in this book (since Shaun was hurt/dying for a good chunk of the book), though Shaun did get more women pregnant by the end of this story. Overall the series is pretty good. The next chapters are not out on audiobook yet, so I need to wait a little while to continue.

Excellent story and good conclusion!

I very much dislike the way the previous book ended. But this one picks up right in the middle of the action. It’s almost like this was one big book that was split in the middle. The first half of this book kind of drug on almost as if it was being strung along to stretch out the story. But after that the store picks up quite nicely and did a good job in its conclusion. I have a bad tendency rating a books on how I feel at the end of the book. If it end on a downer then I tend to give it a bad rating unfortunately that is just how I am. With that said my overall impression of the series is very good.

Another solid entry in the series

This book completes the first story arc of the series. It makes an excellent job of tying up the bulk of the narrative threads, whilst leaving some clear routes for the story to progress along in the future.

There are some things that are clearly setting up for the next story arc - arrangements that will free Sean to deal with the bigger picture - but nothing that seems unreasonable, given what the characters and their allies know.

I look forward to the next book, later this year.

Highly recommend

The story of Sean and his family reached the first chapter in the hopefully long career of the king of Lycans. It satisfies the reader with more adventures in the struggle to free the shape shifters from slavery in Reno, Nevada and opens the doors to taking the struggle to the state and country level. For all of us who enjoy the juvenile dreams of power and multiple wives this is exactly what it’s all about without pretense. The story is well told and enjoyable in most part.

A Great Series!

Just plain action-packed fun. With magic, lycans, guns, fantasy races, muscle cars, sex, and beautiful strong women. Seriously, what’s not to like? The stories are fast and hard-hitting, and remind me of watching old 30’s action serials like Buck Rogers. There’s more depth as each book picks up the pace, so I’m really looking forward to the next arc.

Great Stuff. Highly recommended.

Another good read

As this ends this arc I the Valen’s saga, the story takes many unexpected turns. Sean and the First Lion have some rather intense conversations while waiting for him to heal from the horrific injuries that he received in the previous book. While he rests the girls really step up and take control, Roxy in the lead of course, and show they are the real strength behind Sean Valens. I look forward to what new adventures are to come...

Good Read.

A harem story. The story continues with the main character looking to stay alive. The story wraps up a lot of plot lines to end this story arc with possible release of future books with the cast. Note: There are adult situations in the story as noted in the book description.

The Pride Takes Charge

Sean is badly wounded and almost dead. His wives take over for him and keep the family safe. I like the action, humor, and growth Sean does as a Lion. I look forward to the next arc to discover his place in Lion society and how he will achieve his destiny. This is one of my favorite series.

I was caught up from the first book. From there it took off like a rocket. Each book adding to his harem. I can’t wait to see what this horny were-lion does next.

A great conclusion to the story arc

cali’s blossoming was fun to read.

Enjoyed a good blend of the “magic as software”, personal story lines, and resolution to the war.

This is a combination review of the entire 17+ book series as I binged the entire The Valens Legacy over the about a month.

The Positives:
- The writing is really good. Often when I binge an author things like their crutch words become constant irritants that didn't happen here.
- Stryvant doesn't mess around. The plot never really stops or meanders, each story having important events that carry the narrative forward.
- There's two maybe three arcs in this series but each flow one into another smoothly so it all seams like a natural progression.
- All the arcs are entertaining and engaging I always wanted to know what would happen next or figure out the mystery.
- The Main character rides the line of being a Gary Stu never really crosses that line.
- Functional magic system and cohesive world.

The Negatives:
- The pervasive fetish portions. Even during serious portions Stryvant will often break my immersion with sexual talk or fetishes.
- Repetitive sex and romance. It does get better later in the series, but since Stryvant's fetishes don't change over the course of the book neither do these scenes. I started skipping them, but he'd often stick important plot points in the middle of them.
- The women characters tend to be on the bland side and over sexualized.

Over all I enjoyed the series.

While still enjoyable this book was probably the weakest one so far in the series.

Some of the newer characters get fleshed out more and more as the author expands slightly on the lycan mythos introducing two new lycans at the same time.

The two main reasons why this instalment feels a bit lacking are the length and the odd structure. While all the stories in this series are a bit on the short side, this has been the shortest one yet. Compounded by this is the fact that the peak of the story hits far earlier than normal and the book spends nearly half of the time cleaning up and tying off lose ends. I found myself sitting and waiting for the true final climax of the book only to realize that it had already passed.

I do intend to continue this series as I wait for it to be realized in my area. While this one has been the weakest, it has also still been a quite enjoyable read.

The first 60% of the book is completely worthless. It's a recap of the events immediately after the end of book 5. Sean is in a spirit space and has only a couple pages of time devoted to him, which I think was a missed opportunity. Instead of Sean fighting in the spirit space to earn the respect of the other lions and learn about himself, we're forced to endure characters going here and there doing things that have already been done before. The book is bogged down in the minutiae conversations that don't really go anywhere or serve a purpose. It was all just filler. Even Sean finally makes it into the book, we're treated to several filler porn scenes.

Continuing from the cliffhanger end of the last battle, the story takes a Pyrrhic victory, and shows the entire pride working together to defeat the forces of slavery and twisted magic. Yes, there are a lot more politics here, but only as critical elements of the solution to this story arc.
Rest assured that there is still plenty of action, intrigue, sex, overcoming great obstacles, mystical Lion stuff... and Lycan sex.
IOW: Everything we've come to expect from this series.

I'd really like to say more, but there's so much jam packed in here that would have to include Spoilers. I won't do that to you, so please read on at your leisure, and for your pleasure.

Who doesn't love babies & giant magical rabbits?!

Bad things happen to the bad guys when the good guys decide to stop running! An ever expanding army of bad guys requires some new friends and new allies. The plot continues to twist and turn, action bursts from the page and characters continue to evolve. And, gasp, could diaper duty be in Sean's future?! Please, Jan, keep up the surprise and the great work. This is my favorite series now. Looking forward to the next story arc! :)

It’s okay

The story feels like it’s on cruise control. It’s fine but the cliff hanger doesn’t really matter. This is the end of the first arc so this is where I stop. Maybe the next arc of books will expand into new directions and character development but I suspect it will just be more of the same. Adding more wives. Getting them pregnant. Building his “cult” compound in the mountains so he can rule as king.

This reviews the series to date.

I normally only read military sci-fi, I like stories with spaceships. I thoroughly enjoyed this side- airstrip thru male perspective erotic fantasy, combined with multi species lycanthrope, human mages, and other mythical beings/fantasy. All explained and set in our reality..made me feel 21 again. Too graphic for minors. Appears well edited. I like this author.

A Great Book to close out the Arc

I enjoyed this book as much as the others. We were given more info on the mystical side of the Lions as well as more of their family make up. Sean's wives were featured more as he was out-of-action for the begining. This was the last book in the story Arc but the next one should be starting soon. I highly recommend this series.

Still Trending Up

The storyline is still good, although the story is a little too short. But in fairness these books are quick reads.
There was a nice shift in that the support characters held a bigger part of the story, which worked well for me.
Anything with more character development will add to the story.
Book seven is on the radar.

After completing the first Arc I sit here waiting in suspense for book number seven and the start of the second Arc I can't wait to see how far forward we jumped and see how the girls are all doing as well as Sean I would definitely recommend this series for anyone who enjoys Lycans

Still fun sexy and action packed

Honestly it seems like Sean has won and the story could end here. The book feels like a conclusion the last chapter in a series. It could end here and I would be satisfied. But also a bit disappointed there wasn't more so I'm glad the story will continue.

Stand On It

Sean overloaded his magic and near killed himself with the effort. The lion king has some power and two old lions have there current lives up for a future life as Sean's sons when his wives are ready for children. Now he has recovered and Reno is now free no lycan will be a slave. No slaves in Reno.

I really like this serie. I started it as an experiment to try something different and from that moment on it seems I cannot stop reading. I am used to read john conroe, drew hayes, jim butcher, benedict jacka, ben aaronovich.
To me the stories of those writers are a significant part of my life. As of now the stories of Jan Stryvant are part of it too.

for what it is worth; I recommend!
