[New Life+] Young Again in Another World #1

[New Life+] Young Again in Another World: Volume 1

Rate this book
When death tapped Renya Kunugi on the shoulder, he smiled and went willingly. After enjoying a nice, long life of 94 years, he was looking forward to shutting his eyes for the last time. He was, therefore, understandably upset when he woke up again in an empty space, devoid of memories, with a young girl in a tunic rambling on and on about how she’s God. So, he did what any reasonable person would have done under those circumstances: he sent the girl flying with a kick to the face.

It turned out that the girl was indeed God, and she was in a pinch. She urgently needed someone to do some interdimensional Resource smuggling, and Renya fit the bill.

His mission: cross the boundary into another world, then chill for a few decades. God would handle the rest.

To sweeten the deal, she offered him an eighteen-year-old body and a whole laundry list of ludicrously powerful skills, yet he remained hesitant. Then, she mentioned the food — an exotic world comes with exotic delicacies — and this sealed the deal. The next thing he knew, he was standing in a foreign land, younger, stronger, and more clueless than ever. Will he survive this world? And more importantly, will the world survive him?

Edit: New Life+ is currently in the process of being halted both in Japan and stateside because of questionable content (Nanking Massacre references) and potentially also the author's controversial comments on social media. If you're ok with owning just the three novels, I'd grab them asap. It sounds like we may not get any more, and they will also stop selling them on digital storefronts. =[

New Life Plus is your typical Isekai (meaning "Sent to another world") setup with a few character based wrinkles. It establishes just a tiny portion of its world and cast, keeps a decent amount of comedy, but it falls a bit flat in terms of guiding us towards a goal and towards an ending.

So what is enticing about this book is mainly the hero. Renya is not your typical harem Isekai lead... Well, not entirely typical. He's technically a 94 year old man who is being transferred to the Isekai, though god tinkered with memory wipe and his physical age, so it's a bit of a halfway presentation. This is definitely not quite an "old man pretending to be a youth", but "veteran instincts grafted onto a seemingly average young man". In addition, Renya's backstory is... Interesting. I don't want to spoil it, so jump into this one and find out.

The major battle happens very early in this book. Then this story kind of does what "How Not To Summon a Demon-Lord" did with trickling ever so slightly forward between necessary evil scenes (guild registration) and female fan service sandwiched between the littlest amount of character exposition it can manage to establish. Basically, we learn the bare minimum that we need to know for now. What we learn isn't all that special either, at least on the face of it, in terms of Isekai genre.

I'm hoping this can go some interesting places, but we'll see. Right now, the world sphere is just a bit too small. The pacing is going to be important going forward. This volume followed the characters over a very short range of time, not much of their actions being skipped. I'm hoping future volumes skip out on more of the day to day stuff and get to the action, and potentially romance, quicker.

I like the fact that the main character, Renya Kunigi, after living his life without regrets, refuses the "Goddess character" and her desire to reincarnate the main character. Had to convince him with Over Powered (OP) abilities, artifacts and skills. The Goddess lied through her teeth, offered wonderful food, that is always bad, a world that would not be adverse and is terribly adverse, and so forth and so on...
Goddess reminds me of the Konosuba (Water Goddess) that did not have any power, did not have any charm, and is basically a parody (comedy of all other light novel series with isekai-harem themes).
Main character refuses to join the Adventurer's Guild, refuses to join the party and would rather just be in "heaven/hell"... Refuses the advances of the (Priest) Rona Chevallier, because he saw through her (sensual advances in exchange for joining their adventurer team). If Chevallier was so "generous with her sensual advances and taking it for the team", then what was the point of killing the 6 members of their original adventurer team? I can understand that one chooses who and where and when, but it all ends up being sophism because it was all written as the author thought it out (with or without visible contradictions)...
Although it is a rogue/rebel main character, he is incredibly Over-Powered (OP). He does not want to be in a women's adventurer team (does not want to be in a harem-retinue), does not want to be an adventurer, and wants just to make money (at the end). So why does he end up reincarnated, in a hell-like place, licensed to the adventurer's guild, joined the adventurer group, close to being sexually assaulted by a "priestess", etc. etc. etc.? I hate the pushover/wimp trope that is common in isekai-light novel series, but saying "no" and end up doing everything anyways? What does this say?
So are all of the main character's choices contradictions? or are they like a stubborn mule's kicks?
This is an "older isekai-novel series" from 2014. It was first translated in 2018. Apparently only three volumes were published because of controversy with the author's comments with in the light novel series.

A main character who is an adult and not pushed around by everyone. The main character is a master with the sword and has a bit of an organized crime background. Having died at the age of 94 and then been brought back for a mission on another world, he isn't all that easily dissuaded from what he considers the correct course of action. I LOVE IT!

How many times have we all asked for a main character who was not only powerful but maybe just a bit of a jerk?

It is a fun read. I notice that the other characters are not nearly as well developed as the main character.

For the most part, the book follows the typical story arc and doesn't go anywhere new, other than having a main character that can and does say no.

This book has also apparently managed to shake up the powers that be because of one or more references to a bit of a dust up in Nanjing, a/k/a Nanjing Massacre or the Rape of Nanjing... If something angers the censors, you know it is probably on target. There are currently three books in the series and rumor has it that, not only will there be no more, the existing editions may no longer be sold... In other words, if you are interested, go buy them now.

I rather liked this LN. This has got to be one of the first LN's where the MC isn't a complete punk and the entire setup is actually something that I'd love to see grow. I really hope this turns into a anime.

So here's the breakdown. MC is a guy who died at 94. Get's transported to another world with no memory of his previous life. Meets 2 girls who are getting attacked and just goes HAM. The more you read into the story, the more you find out that the MC was a BAMF. I don't want to give it away, but the MC is sharp as hell and the other people in this LN are nowhere near as off as they seem to be. A quite pleasant surprise.

Amusing and teasing

Definitely worth reading, starting off with a rather dry and cynical sense of humor with dashes of absurd thrown in, the MC leaves you wanting more of him in action after the enthralling battle narration. The situation as a whole and the setting while defined somewhat leave enough up to either interpretation or allowing for further growth. All around, while it felt a little short even for a light novel, it was definitely worth buying.

Enjoyable

This story is wholly enjoyable, it doesn’t have too many common tropes that you feel you’re reading a cliched, overplayed amalgamation of words pandering to teenage jockstraps. It really is refreshing that the protagonist isn’t just a horny whelp.

Not sure about the characterizations yet.

This title is being translated weekly at J-Novel Club and they post it to Amazon's Kindle service when they complete a volume.

Decent but...

I think the author describes the first two love interests breasts for at least a full paragraph if not a bit more

Great start.

A great start for a new serie. The story is not original but the characters are. The writing is very good and made me laugh a couple of times.

I just didn’t warm to the characters. I read the whole thing, but I just didn’t like them.

I could do without the god chapters, glad they are apparently not in the second volume. Just your basic isakai the help system seems to add a little difference.
