132 books1,649 followersGeorges Perec was a highly-regarded French novelist, filmmaker, and essayist. He was a member of the Oulipo group. Many of his novels and essays abound with experimental wordplay, lists, and attempts at classification, and they are usually tinged with melancholy.
Born in a working-class district of Paris, Perec was the only son of Icek Judko and Cyrla (Schulewicz) Peretz, Polish Jews who had emigrated to France in the 1920s. He was a distant relative of the Yiddish writer Isaac Leib Peretz.
Perec's first novel, Les Choses (Things: A Story of the Sixties) was awarded the Prix Renaudot in 1965.
In 1978, Perec won the prix Médicis for Life: A User's Manual (French title, La Vie mode d'emploi), possibly his best-known work. The 99 chapters of this 600 page piece move like a knight's tour of a chessboard around the room plan of a Paris apartment building, describing the rooms and stairwell and telling the stories of the inhabitants.
Cantatrix Sopranica L. is a spoof scientific paper detailing experiments on the "yelling reaction" provoked in sopranos by pelting them with rotten tomatoes. All the references in the paper are multi-lingual puns and jokes, e.g. "(Karybb et Scyla, 1973)".
Perec is also noted for his constrained writing: his 300-page novel La disparition (1969) is a lipogram, written without ever using the letter "e". It has been translated into English by Gilbert Adair under the title A Void (1994). The silent disappearance of the letter might be considered a metaphor for the Jewish experience during the Second World War. Since the name 'Georges Perec' is full of 'e's, the disappearance of the letter also ensures the author's own 'disappearance'.
His novella Les revenentes (1972) is a complementary univocalic piece in which the letter "e" is the only vowel used. This constraint affects even the title, which would conventionally be spelt Revenantes. An English translation by Ian Monk was published in 1996 as The Exeter Text: Jewels, Secrets, Sex in the collection Three.
It has been remarked by Jacques Roubaud that these two novels draw words from two disjoint sets of the French language, and that a third novel would be possible, made from the words not used so far (those containing both "e" and a vowel other than "e").
W ou le souvenir d'enfance, (W, or, the Memory of Childhood, 1975) is a semi-autobiographical work which is hard to classify. Two alternating narratives make up the volume: one, a fictional outline of a totalitarian island country called "W", patterned partly on life in a concentration camp; and the second, descriptions of childhood. Both merge towards the end when the common theme of the Holocaust is explained.
Perec was a heavy smoker throughout his life, and was diagnosed with lung cancer in 1981. He died the following year in Ivry-sur-Seine at only forty-five-years old. His ashes are held at the columbarium of the Père Lachaise Cemetery.
David Bellos wrote an extensive biography of Perec: Georges Perec: A Life in Words, which won the Académie Goncourt's bourse for biography in 1994.

Ellis Island: the ‘golden door’, ‘the island that / in every European tongue / had been renamed the Isle of Tears,’ tränen insel, ייל פון טרערן, wispa łez, ile des larmes, Остров слез, isola delle lagrime… Not to be confused with Liberty Island, housing the Statue of Liberty seen as emmigrants approached the harbor (the creation of it being on of my favorite humorous art stories which I wrote about here), but a tiny island where over 16 million people would enter the United States starting with teenage Annie Moore from Cork, Ireland in 1892 until its closure in 1954. Ellis Island from French author, filmmaker and Oulipo member George Perecs (translated here by Harry Mathews) is a hybrid text ‘attempting to give palpable form / to what those sixteen million individual stories were’ and its lasting legacy as what he calls ‘the ultimate place of exile.’ Through prose, poetry, lists, data and literary quotations, Perec’s constructs a piercing gaze at this ‘non-place’ where millions arrived after grueling journeys to go from ‘emigrants into immigrants.’ My own family passed through here, leaving Poland as the Piatkiewicz family and reemerging as Penkevich like many of the examples of names being changed at whim Perec describes. A short but powerful read on ‘dispersion, wandering, diaspora,’ and the legacy of Ellis Island.
Perec at Ellis Island
First, I’d like to shoutout to Kilburn Adam and his wonderful review through which I learned this book even existed. It’s a quick read at just over 50 pages followed by an equally impressive afterword by Mónica de la Torre for the 2021 reissue. She provides an interesting history of the book, written in conjunction with a documentary Perec worked on about Ellis Island and featured much of this text as a voice-over narration, as well as tying this history of immigration to issues surrounding it in the present during the COVID pandemic. ‘Why are we telling these / stories? what did we come / here to find? what did we / come here to ask?’ Perec writes, examining the island in a state of ruin as people began to convert it into a tourist location, and how the legacy is converted into a different experience for the new and future generations.
We learn the long history of the island, going from military fort to an immigration center with light restrictions (2% of people were turned away, which is still a lot of lives) that overtime increased with literacy tests and other exclusionary laws before eventually—in what feels very much indicative of the US—being converted into a detention center for a while. He also observes how this “golden door” was not the dreamland promised with many immigrants facing harsh xenophobia, low wages and poor housing opportunities, saying they learned quickly the streets they heard had been paved with gold were not for them to travel upon but only labor through the bricklaying. ‘The point is not to have pity, but understanding,’ Perec writes, and he delivers his examination with great power and empathy, exploring the past and these people’s lives, and it makes for a very moving read.
‘ we were sure of having resoundingly evoked
the two words that lie at the very heart of this long venture:
two intangible, precarious, weak, fugitive words that keep
endlessly refracting each other’s wavering light and whose
names
are wandering and hope.’
Ellis Island from Perec is a great little book in a beautiful reissue, and a highly recommended little look at history. It is a great reminder that the United States is made up of people from all over and will (and should) continue to be so, and that the complaints that people need to “come in legally” like “their ancestors did” is not anywhere close of a one-to-one comparison of immigration restrictions now and the time of Ellis Island. A wonderful little book just important now as it was then.

"Ήδη από το πρώτο μισό του 19ου αιώνα μια εξαίσια ελπίδα δονεί την Ευρώπη: για όλους τους λαούς που ταπεινώθηκαν, καταπιέστηκαν, δυναστεύτηκαν, σκλαβώθηκαν, σφαγιάστηκαν, για όλες τις κοινωνικές τάξεις που τις εκμεταλλεύτηκαν.. μια Γη της Επαγγελίας αρχίζει να διαφαίνεται: η Αμερική.."
Έλις Άιλαντ, η αλλιώς το νησί των δακρύων, που άνοιξε το 1892 και μέχρι το 1954 αποτελούσε κέντρο υποδοχής μεταναστών (μόνο για όσους δεν είχαν την οικονομική άνεση να ταξιδέψουν first class βεβαίως βεβαίως).
Κοντά και μακρυά συνάμα από το συνήθη τρόπο γραφής του - ομολογώ ότι άρχισα να διαβάζω τους ουλιπιανούς κανόνες γραφής ψάχνοντας για συνδέσεις και μή - ο Περέκ φτιάχνει ένα ημερολόγιο με ιστορικά στοιχεία για όσα συνέβαιναν τότε στους χώρους υποδοχής του Έλις Άιλαντ. Γραφή μοντέρνα, και φορτισμένη συναισθηματικά, αναπόφευκτα αφού αποκαλύπτει το ότι ήταν εβραίος.
Θα μπορούσα να κάνω quote το μισό βιβλίο είναι μικρό άλλωστε αλλά νομίζω η σποιλεριά θα καταστρέψει την ανάγνωση σε όποιον το διαλέξει.
Όμως δε μπορώ να μην αναφερθώ στο ακόλουθο απόσπασμα:
"οι μέτοικοι που αποβιβάζονταν για πρώτη φορά στο Μπάτερι Παρκ δεν αργούσαν να διαπιστώσουν ότι αυτά που τους αφηγούνταν για τη θαυμαστή Αμερική δεν ήταν και πολύ ακριβή: μπορεί η γη να ανήκε σε όλους, αλλά όσοι είχαν φτάσει πρώτοι εκεί την κατέλαβαν σχεδόν όλη, και σαυτους πια δεν έμενε παρά να στοιβάζονται δέκα δέκα στις τυφλές τρώγλες του Λόουερ Ιστ Σάιντ και να δουλεύουν 15 ώρες τη μέρα. Οι κολασμένοι της Γηραιάς Ηπείρου στη Γη της επαγγελίας μέσω του Έλις Αιλαντ στις αρχές του 20ου αιώνα και οι εξόριστοι, (λαθραίοι)άνθρωποι από το νέο Τρίτο Κόσμο(?) στην Καινούρια Γη της Επαγγελίας, την Ευρώπη, στις αρχές του 21ου. Πόσες οι ομοιότητες και ποιές ποιοτικά οι διαφορές?
Τέτοια βιβλία τα διαβάζουμε για να γινόμαστε καλύτεροι άνθρωποι. Αλλιώς ποιο το νοήμα?

Τι να γράψω για αυτό το συγκλονιστικό βιβλίο; Έλις Άιλαντ, η το νησί των δακρύων, άνοιξε το 1892 και μέχρι το 1954 αποτελούσε κέντρο υποδοχής των μεταναστών Δεν βρίσκω λόγια, για αυτή τη νουβέλα, ειναι συγκλονιστικό το κείμενο, το έχω γεμίσει post it όλο, οπότε παραθέτω κάποια αποσπάσματα:

Ooit, ergens in de duistere jaren van mijn studententijd, las ik de originele versie, zonder foto’s. Op een of andere manier kwam de kracht van deze tekst toen niet echt binnen. Was ik te jong?
Dit is een complete editie, mét foto’s en getuigenissen,
in een uitstekende nieuwe vertaling. Emigratie en immigratie lagen nooit dichter bij elkaar, de herinneringen van sommige van de getuigen zijn ronduit verpletterend. Essentieel voor wie Perecs Joods-zijn wil begrijpen.
Dit is een complete editie, mét foto’s en getuigenissen,
in een uitstekende nieuwe vertaling. Emigratie en immigratie lagen nooit dichter bij elkaar, de herinneringen van sommige van de getuigen zijn ronduit verpletterend. Essentieel voor wie Perecs Joods-zijn wil begrijpen.

Recordo visitar Ellis Island en un viatge escolar quan tenia uns 10 anys. Va ser una experiència impactant i que sempre he tingut molt present. No l'he visitat mai de gran, però tinc ganes de fer-ho.
M'agrada des d'on escriu Perec i les reflexions que fa en el llibre, no tan sols sobre la immigració, sinó sobre la memòria, la identitat i el que representen els llocs (no-llocs). És un text molt breu però crec que capta molt bé l'atmosfera d'un espai amb tants contrastos.

To be honest, i'm adding this cause i found it really good and i'm behind on my reading goal, but i have not read the whole book because it's a subject in a class and i don't have the full photocopy. But yeah, poetic, documentary, fascinating.

Este librito mínimo me pareció muy sugerente para pensar un monumento, Perec style, entre las huellas y lo que no fue archivado, entre los datos estadísticos y las vidas individuales, entre la historia y la autobiografía, muy bueno.

I found Georges Perec’s big postmodern masterpiece™️ Life: A User’s Manual kind of gimmicky and tedious but this was actually really interesting! A prose poem / essay on the history of Ellis Island and what it means to be an immigrant and emigrant. Short and sweet and very, very pretty! As a Jew with a very loose conception of Jewish identity I really liked the section about Jewish identity 🥸
Afterword about how disturbing the immigration process became under Reagan and Clinton through Trump made me feel bad but it’s ok Biden is president now we can all go back to brunch.

Dans ce texte court, Georges Perec résume l'histoire du centre d'accueil d'Ellis Island. Il évoque la manière dont étaenit traités les migrants, leurs origines et quelques anecdotes.
Il parle de la difficulté à décrire ce qui s'est réellement passé là-bas : les drames et le quotidien, les rêves et les déceptions... L'impossibilité de se représenter seize millions d'histoires individuelles, seize millions d'exils. Mais surtout il indique les raisons pour lesquelles il s'est intéressé à Ellis Island : le lieu de l'exil et de l'errance, un lieu qui incarne la diaspora, un non-lieu qui est pour lui indissociable du fait d'être juif.

Un très beau texte qui est d'autant plus percutant qu'il est court. La lecture du passage où Georges Perec rattache l'histoire d'Ellis Island à sa judéité est un moment fort que je n'oublierai pas de si tôt.
Ellis Island est évidemment particulièrement actuel le 1er mars 2016, alors que des centaines de milliers et peut-être demain des millions de réfugiés attendent et espèrent aux portes de l'Europe...

About three-quarters through Perec’s graceful and intriguing poetic essay on Ellis Island, I started asking myself, “What’s Ellis Island to Perec?” He never emigrated to the U.S., as had so many other Europeans, including Frenchmen like himself.
Ellis Island is the script to a documentary on Perec wrote in 1978 in collaboration with director Robert Bobo (whose own great-grandfather, with trachoma, was turned back at Ellis Island), long before the buildings and grounds of the island had been restored as a National Park tour site, and long after it had been scavenged for scrap metal.
Perec was a great one for lists, and they are here: the questions asked during the 25 years the island served as the gateway to the continent; as well as the tests and observations passed; the seats, desks, and walls used; and so forth.
Of course, in trying to sus out Perec’s relationship to Ellis Island, I was looking at him the wrong way, as a Frenchman, not as a Jew, whose parents—not mentioned by Perec (father killed by a German, mother dead in Auschwitz)—orphaned him by age 9. “To me Ellis Island . . . / . . . in my mind is linked / in a most confused and intimate way / with the fact of being a Jew.”

In 1980 maakten Robert Bobert (1931) en Georges Perec (1936- 1982) een filmdocumentaire over Ellis Island. Dat eilandje onder Manhattan (New York) was het doorgangscentrum van zo’n 16 miljoen emigranten, onder wie veel Joodse vluchtelingen. Tegelijk maakten zij een fotoboek, dat nu is vertaald door Rokus Hofstede. Die vertaling is fraai, en het nawoord van Perec- kenner Manet van Montfrans is verhelderend. Tekst en beeld vullen elkaar bovendien mooi aan: de beelden zeggen meer dan 1000 woorden, de teksten van Perec eveneens. En het boek is prachtig vormgegeven. Alleen al die afbeelding van het vrijheidsbeeld op de voorkant, als symbool van stralende maar vaak vergeefse hoop…..
De beelden en teksten maken de onvoorstelbare massaliteit van de immigratie mooi voelbaar. Net als het verval van Ellis Island, en de gevangenisachtige sfeer ervan. Ook krijgen we een indruk van de ontberingen van de immigranten. En van hun wanhoop, hun angsten om teruggestuurd te worden (wat helaas vaak gebeurde), hun angsten voor de pogroms die zij ontvluchtten. Ja, Amerika was voor hen het beloofde land, en veel immigranten hebben daar een nieuw thuis gevonden. En dat krijgt in dit boek aandacht. Maar hun verschrikkingen eveneens, en hun ontworteling niet minder.
Een belangrijk thema in dit boek is het Joods- zijn en de holocaust. Bobert en Perec waren allebei Joods, en hun families hebben zeer geleden tijdens WO II. Alleen, voor Bobert was Ellis Island vooral een gedenkplaats voor de veerkracht van zijn familie, die ondanks alles toch een nieuw thuis vond. Voor Perec daarentegen betekent Joods- zijn verlies, ballingschap, ontworteling. Zijn ouders en grootouders vonden geen nieuw thuis, maar verdwenen tijdens WO II spoorloos. Hijzelf werd van zijn kindertijd en geboortegrond beroofd. Voor hem overheerst dus het gevoel van anders- zijn: anders dan alle anderen, maar vooral ook anders dan al de zijnen. Hij spreekt immers de taal niet die zijn ouders spraken, deelt hun herinneringen niet, doorvoelt hun cultuur niet. In zijn gesprekken met Joodse immigranten ervaart hij dan ook niet een nieuwe kennismaking met zijn Joodse ‘roots’, maar juist het traumatische verlies daarvan.
De niet- plaats, het nergens, de diaspora, het verlies, en die ontworteling, wordt indringend verwoord in de volgende zinnen, die als een soort vrije verzen zijn vormgegeven: “wat ikzelf, Georges Perec, hier en komen uitzoeken,/ heeft te maken met ontheemding, verstrooiing, diaspora./ Ellis Island is voor mij bij uitstek de plaats van de ballingschap,/ dat wil zeggen/ de plaats van de afwezigheid van plaats, de niet- plaats, het/ nergens.”
Door de onverwachte regelafbrekingen (door mij aangegeven met “/”, door Perec met stukken wit) wordt voelbaar gemaakt hoe ongrijpbaar Ellis Island voor Perec was. Niet alleen omdat wat daar gebeurde onvoorstelbaar was, maar ook omdat er nooit een Ellis Island was voor zijn ouders en voor hem. En ook dat maakt het voor hem een “niet- plaats”, een “nergens” dat– ook typografisch- in de leegte bungelt. Dat komt ook naar voren in de volgende regels: “wat voor mij hier te vinden is/ zijn geenszins bakens, wortels of sporen,/ maar het tegendeel ervan: iets vormeloos, / wat amper onder woorden te brengen is,/ iets wat ik afsluiting kan noemen, of afscheuring, of afgesneden zijn,/ en wat voor mij op een heel innige, heel ondoorgrondelijke manier/ verbonden is met het feit dat ik Joods ben.”
Dit boek staat vol fraaie en stemmige zwart- wit foto’s. Maar Perec stelt de intrigerende vragen: “vertellen/hoe doe je dat? kijken/ hoe doe je dat? hoe herken je deze plaats/ […] onder de kunstmatige rust van deze foto’s/ eens en voor al verstard in de bedrieglijke evidentie van hun/ zwart- wit?”. En vooral ook: “Hoe krijgen we vat op wat niet wordt getoond, wat niet/ is gefotografeerd, gearchiveerd, gerestaureerd of in scène gezet?”.
We kunnen ons niet voorstellen wat Ellis Island betekende voor de immigranten. En al helemaal niet wat deze niet- plaats betekende voor de dolende Georges Perec. Dat kon Perec zelf niet eens. We kijken dus naar foto’s zonder te weten waar we precies naar kijken. En met het besef dat er ook heel veel niet is gefotografeerd. Of is verteld. Precies dat benadrukt Perec, door de raadselachtige foto’s te omlijsten met vragen en raadselachtige vrije verzen. En niet met verhelderend of verklarend commentaar.
Dit was de laatste langere tekst van Perec die tijdens zijn leven verscheen. En hij vertelt daarin voor het eerst openlijk over zijn eigen Joods- zijn. Dat had hij eerder altijd zorgvuldig vermeden, omdat hij niet als een “Joods schrijver” gelabeld wilde worden, met alle sentimentele clichés van dien. Maar ook omdat hij recht wilde doen aan de niet- vertelbaarheid van de holocaust. En aan de onbevattelijkheid van zijn eigen geschiedenis en familiegeschiedenis.
Vandaar dat hij in eerdere boeken alleen heel indirect schreef over de holocaust, het Joods- zijn, en de spoorloze verdwijning van zijn ouders. In "La disparition "(’t Manco), een roman van 300 bladzijden, komt bijvoorbeeld geen enkele – e voor: een gat in de taal, die in stilte symbool staat voor de lacune die Perecs ouders achterlieten. In "W of de jeugdherinnering" wordt deze lacune opgeroepen door witte bladzijden, de meerduidige symboliek van getallen en letters, en de lacunes en dubbele bodems in het verhaal.
Zo cryptisch, dubbelzinnig en vernuftig is Perec in "Ellis Island" niet. Al was het maar omdat hij nu wel letterlijk over zijn Joods- zijn en zijn ouders spreekt. Maar dan wel in raadselachtige verzen, met stukken wit die de lacunes benadrukken, en met termen als “niet- plaats”. Of door lange opsommingen van fenomenen die geen verband lijken te hebben. Fenomenen ook die soms zo ‘ondergewoon’ zijn dat niemand ze zou opmerken, maar die niet vergeten mogen worden. Een sluitend verhaal vormen die opsommingen niet. Maar juist dat maakt dat zij het karakter krijgen van een litanie, waarin herdacht wordt wat niet in een sluitend verhaal verteld kan worden.
En dat geldt ook voor de interviews met de immigranten in het laatste deel van dit boek. Waarin een van de geïnterviewden, zich bedenkend dat hij de enige overlevende is, mijmert: “Zo gaat de wereld….. Hij rol, rolt, rolt….. eindeloos”. Een mijmering die door Perec bewust niet wordt verhelderd of toegelicht. Net zo min als de andere vaak moeilijk te bevatten impressies en herinneringen van de andere geïnterviewden. Zodat ook die interviews lezen als een opsomming van verschillende mijmeringen en uiteenlopende perspectieven. En niet als een sluitend verhaal met kop en staart.
Het is goed dat ook dit boek van Perec nu vertaald is. Natuurlijk, zijn meesterwerken "W of de jeugdherinneringen" en vooral "Het leven een gebruiksaanwijzing" zijn duidelijk sterker. Maar het is interessant om hem zo expliciet over zijn Joods- zijn te zien schrijven. Ook wordt het onbevattelijke van dit Joods- zijn mooi voelbaar in zijn teksten, en in de wisselwerkingen tussen tekst en beeld. Want de beelden worden raadselachtiger door de teksten, en de teksten vaak ook door de beelden. En precies dat lijkt mij goed te passen bij een zo raadselachtige niet- plaats als Ellis Island.
De beelden en teksten maken de onvoorstelbare massaliteit van de immigratie mooi voelbaar. Net als het verval van Ellis Island, en de gevangenisachtige sfeer ervan. Ook krijgen we een indruk van de ontberingen van de immigranten. Voor Perec daarentegen betekent Joods- zijn verlies, ballingschap, ontworteling. Zijn ouders en grootouders vonden geen nieuw thuis, maar verdwenen tijdens WO II spoorloos. Hijzelf werd van zijn kindertijd en geboortegrond beroofd. Voor hem overheerst dus het gevoel van anders- zijn: anders dan alle anderen, maar vooral ook anders dan al de zijnen. Hij spreekt immers de taal niet die zijn ouders spraken, deelt hun herinneringen niet, doorvoelt hun cultuur niet. In zijn gesprekken met Joodse immigranten ervaart hij dan ook niet een nieuwe kennismaking met zijn Joodse ‘roots’, maar juist het traumatische verlies daarvan.
De niet- plaats, het nergens, de diaspora, het verlies, en die ontworteling, wordt indringend verwoord in de volgende zinnen, die als een soort vrije verzen zijn vormgegeven: “wat ikzelf, Georges Perec, hier en komen uitzoeken,/ heeft te maken met ontheemding, verstrooiing, diaspora./ Ellis Island is voor mij bij uitstek de plaats van de ballingschap,/ dat wil zeggen/ de plaats van de afwezigheid van plaats, de niet- plaats, het/ nergens.”
Door de onverwachte regelafbrekingen (door mij aangegeven met “/”, door Perec met stukken wit) wordt voelbaar gemaakt hoe ongrijpbaar Ellis Island voor Perec was. Niet alleen omdat wat daar gebeurde onvoorstelbaar was, maar ook omdat er nooit een Ellis Island was voor zijn ouders en voor hem. En ook dat maakt het voor hem een “niet- plaats”, een “nergens” dat– ook typografisch- in de leegte bungelt. Dat komt ook naar voren in de volgende regels: “wat voor mij hier te vinden is/ zijn geenszins bakens, wortels of sporen,/ maar het tegendeel ervan: iets vormeloos, / wat amper onder woorden te brengen is,/ iets wat ik afsluiting kan noemen, of afscheuring, of afgesneden zijn,/ en wat voor mij op een heel innige, heel ondoorgrondelijke manier/ verbonden is met het feit dat ik Joods ben.”
Dit boek staat vol fraaie en stemmige zwart- wit foto’s. Maar Perec stelt de intrigerende vragen: “vertellen/hoe doe je dat? kijken/ hoe doe je dat? hoe herken je deze plaats/ […] onder de kunstmatige rust van deze foto’s/ eens en voor al verstard in de bedrieglijke evidentie van hun/ zwart- wit?”. En vooral ook: “Hoe krijgen we vat op wat niet wordt getoond, wat niet/ is gefotografeerd, gearchiveerd, gerestaureerd of in scène gezet?”.
We kunnen ons niet voorstellen wat Ellis Island betekende voor de immigranten. En al helemaal niet wat deze niet- plaats betekende voor de dolende Georges Perec. Dat kon Perec zelf niet eens. We kijken dus naar foto’s zonder te weten waar we precies naar kijken. En met het besef dat er ook heel veel niet is gefotografeerd. Of is verteld. Precies dat benadrukt Perec, door de raadselachtige foto’s te omlijsten met vragen en raadselachtige vrije verzen. En niet met verhelderend of verklarend commentaar.
Dit was de laatste langere tekst van Perec die tijdens zijn leven verscheen. En hij vertelt daarin voor het eerst openlijk over zijn eigen Joods- zijn. Dat had hij eerder altijd zorgvuldig vermeden, omdat hij niet als een “Joods schrijver” gelabeld wilde worden, met alle sentimentele clichés van dien. Maar ook omdat hij recht wilde doen aan de niet- vertelbaarheid van de holocaust. En aan de onbevattelijkheid van zijn eigen geschiedenis en familiegeschiedenis.
Vandaar dat hij in eerdere boeken alleen heel indirect schreef over de holocaust, het Joods- zijn, en de spoorloze verdwijning van zijn ouders. In "La disparition "(’t Manco), een roman van 300 bladzijden, komt bijvoorbeeld geen enkele – e voor: een gat in de taal, die in stilte symbool staat voor de lacune die Perecs ouders achterlieten. In "W of de jeugdherinnering" wordt deze lacune opgeroepen door witte bladzijden, de meerduidige symboliek van getallen en letters, en de lacunes en dubbele bodems in het verhaal.
Zo cryptisch, dubbelzinnig en vernuftig is Perec in "Ellis Island" niet. Al was het maar omdat hij nu wel letterlijk over zijn Joods- zijn en zijn ouders spreekt. Maar dan wel in raadselachtige verzen, met stukken wit die de lacunes benadrukken, en met termen als “niet- plaats”. Of door lange opsommingen van fenomenen die geen verband lijken te hebben. Fenomenen ook die soms zo ‘ondergewoon’ zijn dat niemand ze zou opmerken, maar die niet vergeten mogen worden. Een sluitend verhaal vormen die opsommingen niet. Maar juist dat maakt dat zij het karakter krijgen van een litanie, waarin herdacht wordt wat niet in een sluitend verhaal verteld kan worden.
En dat geldt ook voor de interviews met de immigranten in het laatste deel van dit boek. Waarin een van de geïnterviewden, zich bedenkend dat hij de enige overlevende is, mijmert: “Zo gaat de wereld….. Hij rol, rolt, rolt….. eindeloos”. Een mijmering die door Perec bewust niet wordt verhelderd of toegelicht. Net zo min als de andere vaak moeilijk te bevatten impressies en herinneringen van de andere geïnterviewden. Zodat ook die interviews lezen als een opsomming van verschillende mijmeringen en uiteenlopende perspectieven. En niet als een sluitend verhaal met kop en staart.
Het is goed dat ook dit boek van Perec nu vertaald is. Natuurlijk, zijn meesterwerken "W of de jeugdherinneringen" en vooral "Het leven een gebruiksaanwijzing" zijn duidelijk sterker. Maar het is interessant om hem zo expliciet over zijn Joods- zijn te zien schrijven. Ook wordt het onbevattelijke van dit Joods- zijn mooi voelbaar in zijn teksten, en in de wisselwerkingen tussen tekst en beeld. Want de beelden worden raadselachtiger door de teksten, en de teksten vaak ook door de beelden. En precies dat lijkt mij goed te passen bij een zo raadselachtige niet- plaats als Ellis Island.

L’Amérique, terre promise pour tous les opprimés. Espoir d’une vie meilleure.
Ellis Island surnommée « L’île des larmes« . Dans la première moitié du XIXème siècle, l’île est le passage obligé des émigrants pauvres. L’immigration américaine y a installé un centre d’accueil pour mettre fin à l’immigration quasi sauvage et où les mesures vont devenir de plus en plus restrictives. Il faut savoir qu’entre 1892 et 1924, pas moins de 16 millions de personnes passeront par Ellis Island.
Outre le fait que ce livre soit une véritable mine d’informations, c’est surtout un témoignage poignant. Un documentaire court mais oh combien riche en émotions. On se met dans la peau de ces immigrés, venant du monde entier : d’Europe souvent (Irlande, Allemagne, France, Italie…), du Maghreb et d’Asie. La plupart fuyaient la guerre, la famine, ou souhaitaient simplement trouver un emploi pour subvenir aux besoins de leur famille, dans l’espoir d’une vie meilleure. Sur les candidats à l’immigration, 8 millions ont été autorisés à entrer dans le pays. Les autres furent renvoyés, en raison de leur santé ou de leur passé. Ils étaient soumis à un interrogatoire poussé et l’agent de l’immigration avait leur destin entre ses mains.
Perec est un conteur, il a un don de retranscrire à la perfection les émotions, le vécu, d’une manière à la fois sobre et passionnante.
Le tri des migrants, le déracinement, la perte d’identité, le courage de changer de vie, se reconstruire ailleurs, sont des sujets toujours d’actualité. Et c’est en cela également que ce livre prend aux tripes.
Un livre concis, qui se lit d’une traite, qui appelle à filer sur internet pour en savoir plus. Et ce qui est certain, c’est que si je retourne à New York un jour, cette fois, je ferai halte à Ellis Island !

Page 14: an entire paragraph dedicated to explaining how inspectors at Ellis Island changed peoples' names.
OK, that never happened. It's a myth. This is known (see links below), now. I was hoping for a footnote explaining the error. No? OK...well, I imagine it will be discussed in the afterword. Wrong! Page 59: "As lore had it, they seemed to translate last names almost homophonically, subjecting them to distortions that rendered them unrecognizable..." NOOOOOO. The inspectors at Ellis Island did not even write down names. The names were written--the passenger lists you can view online--were written at the point of embarkation, when the tickets were purchased (and crossed out names purchased tickets but did not embark). This is not lore, this is MYTH.
Don't hire a poet to write about and explain history. Please. As a historian and genealogist, we don't need myths like this spread further.

A quick, at times affecting but ultimately disappointing account of the "immigration machine" at Ellis Island, originally written for a documentary on the topic which came out in 1980. The text attempts to give an account of the staggering numbers of people (16 million) who came through Ellis Island moved by the hope for a better life and thus resonates with the current daily struggle of migrants in Europe. But despite much questioning, Perec is ultimately unable to pierce through statistics and official narratives to get to the real human core of the events. The text ends on a meditation about being Jewish as a form of exile.
