It’s not quite the Gummi Bears, but it certainly bounces around a lot.
Jozi Flash 2017 combines the talents of ten brilliant authors with one gifted artist, to bring you a collection of 80 flash fiction stories across eight different genres.
From a children’s story about the folly of summoning dragons, to the horrors held in deliciously treacherous ice cream, the authors take you on journeys that weave fantasy and folklore together alongside practical detectives and everyday tragedy.
With stunning artwork prompts by Nico Venter, these South African authors have created an anthology that will leave you breathless.
"Jozi Flash" is a collection of stories in different genres, which means, there is a great story for anyone's tastes.
From Children's fiction, Romance, Horror, Comedy, Tragedy, Fantasy, Crime to Science-Fiction... You get to laugh, fall in love, cry, scream and go on an adventure with the characters.
As most of you may know, I love short stories, which meant I dived in this book with excitement and curiosity. And since there were different genres, if I wasn't in the mood at that moment and go back whenever I wanted to read or reread the stories.
I can't honestly choose which story I liked more, because each story is special and as a particular writing style that is unique to the author that wrote it, and I feel like it wouldn't be fair.
I know I said I would say which story I loved more, but I can say that one of my favorites was "A Stroll Through the Light" it was a quick and touchy story, and there was this quote I loved: "It became their ritual and each day her dress flashed in the light of the sun. The sky was painted in shades of red and purple and blue."
Every story had a quick feeling, like eating a good snack, and good pace in the storyline, and I loved that. It made the reading of the short stories fun, even the tragic ones were not only emotional, but let me enjoy the storytelling to the fullest.
Another thing I loved about this books were the illustrations and the titles of the short stories. Every single title made me curious about what it would talk about and the illustrations at the beginning of each genre was funny and intriguing. One of the drawings I loved the most was the Science-Fiction one. There was something about it that made me dream, and I loved that.
Over all, while reading this anthology, you get fly through the sky like you were a dragon, dream again with each fairytale like story, cry with all the emotional stories, laugh at how funny they were and just enjoy each journey.
I do recommend this anthology, because they are short stories and you get different genres that you get to enjoy, so it's a book or everyone.

Book Cover
I was immediately drawn in by the cover. The colors seem to shine right off the picture and I think they go well together. Plus, the idea of showing off the genres as “books” on a shelf is a nice touch.
First Thoughts
I read the first Jozi Flash collection last year and was excited to hear they came out another one. I was eager to give it a read.
Writing Style
This is a flash fiction anthology so there’s no steady plot. Each author wrote a flash piece in each of the 8 genres presented in the book. Each genre had it’s own illustration and prompt that the authors needed to us for their story in that particular genre.
Each story is short and sweet (for the most part, depending on the genre). Even though each short shared the genre, prompt, and picture in common, each one was vastly different than the one before it. It was a great variety of quick reads.
Overall
This was refreshing to read. It’s nice to bounce around the various genres. The book is about 160 pages long so it’s a great quick read – one you can pick up whenever you’re in the mood for a certain genre.
Favorite Quote:
“She pulled the trigger anyway. The click was as hollow as her hopes.” -Nthato Morakobi, Jozi Flash 2017
I will not choose a story to review, I will review it as a whole collection :D Because each story is a unique story by itself with its own style and genre I want to review this as an entire collection.
Some stories were emotional, while others were fun, cute and even horror. This anthology was beautifully made from the gorgeous cover to the amazing and fun stories. You get immersed immediately into a new world and new characters and you get to read different genres that to my surprise I LOVED IT ;)
The prompts and the illustrations were perfect and everything had a feel of writer's journal (but in a very good way). Each author did an amazing job with his/her writing, making the short story fly by fast.
Overall, I loved the book, it was short and fun to read and I highly recommend it to everyone who loves to read short stories and fiction. You can even choose the right story for you by your favorite genre or by your current mood.
