Trente ans. C'est l'âge du narrateur de cette histoire. Et son médecin est formel : il est atteint d'une maladie incurable, il ne lui reste plus que quelques semaines à vivre.
D'émotion, il perd connaissance de retour chez lui. Au réveil, deux visages sont penchés au-dessus de sa tête : celui de son chat et celui de son sosie... version extravertie !
Cet homme haut en couleur est le Diable en personne. Et il lui propose un marché : chaque jour, supprimer quelque chose du monde réel pour gagner vingt-quatre heures de vie supplémentaires.
Il accepte. Quelques journées extraordinaires passent, où, confronté à des choix difficiles et à leurs conséquences pour ceux qu'il aime, il apprend à réévaluer son existence, son histoire, sa place dans le monde. Et puis, au cinquième jour, le Diable lui propose de supprimer les chats. La vie du narrateur va alors basculer une deuxième fois...
