Cillian's a sexy, broody, mobbed up, and controlling werepanther. Scarlet's feisty, playful and fairly certain that every relationship between a shifter and human ends with the human in a body bag—however she likes to walk on the wild side and sleep with a nonhuman every now and then. One night while at Abaddon, the premier hookup spot for humans and nonhumans, she takes Cillian out back for a quickie assuming he’s a vampire since he has pale skin, fangs and just happens to be sexy as hell.
The day after the encounter Cillian reveals his secret, not only is he a werepanther but they’re more than just your average shifter. With a thirst for blood that needs to be sated every full moon werepanthers are stuck between the oppressive vampire hierarchy and the seedier less than legal side of shifter culture.
With Cillian poised to ascend to head of The Family, what werepanthers call their pack, it's open season on everyone connected to him--including those who just happen to have his scent on them. This is bad news for Scarlet who's not accustomed to the violence that permeates the lives of most preternaturals--let alone werepanthers who have all the Machiavellian instincts of a vampire paired with the sheer animalistic brutality of shifters. The deadly combination upends Scarlet’s life and forces into Cillian’s arms for protection.
An avid reader and lover of literature, Christina Quinn, has always wanted to be an author for as long as she can remember. She spends most of her days with a coffee cup or wine glass within arm’s reach as she labors at her laptop weaving incredible stories.
Quite honestly, this was a sexy but frustrating read. Not the author's fault but there were some things that happened which made me pull at my hair because of the characters, themselves. The one thing that I absolutely love about Ms. Quinn's characters (and this isn't the first book of hers that I've read) is that she makes them so tangible. They're not cookie cutter to where you have no choice but to love them: there will be characters that you can't stand and wish death on them and that is what makes for an outstanding book, in my opinion.
I wish I could say more without spoiling the book! A connection IS there but it may not be enough for some readers, between Cillian and Scarlet. You have to be really open-minded to their relationship and the situations at hand in order to understand it.
Keep in mind that this is a short story, so everything is gonna be all BAM, WHOOSH in your face! It's supposed to be.
If you're longing for a different take on your average supernatural/preternatural beings, you're reading the right book!
If you liked Christina Quinn's Danse Macabre series you'll probably like this one too. I loved it. I enjoyed the chemistry between the characters and adored Cillian. My only critique is it probably needs a warning tag for those who are a bit cringe-y with violence.
