Gryphons vs Dragons #1

Emerald Gryphon

Rate this book
A priceless totem. An unexplainable transformation. And a secret he can’t keep from her for long.

Ever since finding the gemstone figurine in a cave in Belize, Ethan’s been experiencing strange sensations: chills, body aches, and a buzzing in his chest like there’s a beast trying to escape.

Which is exactly what happens when Jessica, a temp in his office, finds the figurine and presses the emerald set inside.

Now they share an impossible secret: that Ethan can shapeshift into a gryphon, a mythical creature with the body of a lion and head of an eagle. And as the one to first unleash it from the totem, Jessica is inexplicably bound to him.

But just when they begin to understand what the shapeshifting entails, they’re chased by a mysterious man with fire tattoos all over his body, who can turn into his own winged beast. As they scramble for their lives, soon Jessica and Ethan begin to wonder: is such an ability a blessing… or a curse?

GRYPHONS VS DRAGONS is the new paranormal shapeshifter series from Ruby Ryan. There’s steamy romance, exciting action, and no cliffhangers. Each book in the series can be read standalone, and of course each features a Happily Ever After!

I like the PRNs, but this one is a bit different. Ethan was a plain human and to become a shifter, he wasn't bitten or mated to one, which is a nice change. I also thought it was interesting that Ethan couldn't become a Gryphon on his own, he has to have someone else make him shift. Last but not least, Dragons are the bad guys, I'm not sure as I like that part, but it's different. I did enjoy the book and will be reading book 2.

Surprisingly fun book. Not that it wouldn't be great, I have never read a gryphon shifter book before so this was such a treat. I thought it lacked a bit in some areas, but overall it was a great read - Ethan was great and adorable (SO CUTE) really when reading him it was just like my inner girl squeeeed - Jessica was great and a powerful force actually for her demure work side she had a wicked kick ass personality (and literally her role in this book is amazing) - I can't wait to read the next book in the series

This is the first book in the Gryphons vs Dragons series and it starts out with Ethan, apparently with a hangover, not ready to face the morning after a 10-year college reunion celebration with his friends. His buddy, Andy, threw open the curtains and windows, blinding Ethan and making him groan. But they had a cave tour scheduled and Andy was not going to let them miss it.

The guide led them through a narrow passage that opened into an enormous chamber that took their breath away. Then they were back in another narrow passage, moving ever deeper. In another large chamber, they turned off their flashlights to total blackness. Ethan felt something pulling at his head like gravity, and he saw a tiny green light appear further away?? But no one else saw it! They were told to explore the room but avoid small passages, but Ethan was again drawn to where he had seen the green light. The passage got smaller and smaller and he felt claustrophobic, pulled against his will. It opened into a shaft and in a hole in the ground, he found a small statute of some sort of animal with a glowing emerald. He heard his friends’ frantic calls for him and returned to the cavern.

Jessica was not enjoying her temp job as Systems Administrator in the IT Department. She loved the work, but her boss was miserable and cranky and blamed her for everything, even if she had nothing to do with it. She got a ton of work done in the peace and quiet while her boss was in a meeting; but then her boss phoned her to yell at her for not being at the airport to pick up Ethan who worked down the hall! She raced there but was a half hour late. When she found him, he told her the ditzy temp had restructured the computer and he was going to have to work all night to fix it. She had done it well, but their large client base made that the wrong thing to do – it would crash the system. Ethan wasn’t feeling well and wanted a nap. Jessica came to his office to apologize. He showed her the information he should have left for her so she understood why their schema was not the traditional one.

Jessica came back to work that night to fix her mistakes. Ethan’s light was off, so she began to rebuild the 2,000 entries. It took all night but she got it finished. However, her account didn’t have the permissions to back up the data before applying the fixes, so she had to wait for Ethan. She went to his office to see if he left a password, and she found him in a deep sleep on the couch. He was burning hot, so she woke him and drove him to his home. Settling him into bed, she felt something in his pocket and pulled it out. As she touched the emerald, it moved and Ethan leaped out of the bed, covered his ears, and began to CHANGE! Then he ran across the room and dove out of the window! Was Jessica witnessing his suicide? Did she realize that they were now bound together somehow? What was going on???

This was a very enjoyable book. The story line was good and moved along at a perfect pace. The characters were mostly likable and interesting. One issue was that the “boss” character was referred to as Mrs. Anderson and Mrs. Arnold, which I hope will be corrected at publication. Regardless, this was a good book and I look forward to the next one in the series!

I had never heard of this author, but am glad I found her. I like paranormal stories, but have to admit that some shifter-breeds seem to be running out of new material. The cover looked interesting (a Griffin) and different from the others flooding the market (ahem wolves). Not sure if this guy had recessed genes or if it was just plain "magic" that followed him home after not following the Boy-Scout advice of "leave only footprints and take only pictures" while caving on vacation. He returns home and things get weirder than the usual avalanche of catch-up work hassle.

I'm not going to give the story away, but I will say that I like that Eric and Jessica are a pretty-good team. It's not all save the girl time; she gets to save him too, which is nice. Through their adventures they grow smarter as well as closer (of course, because this is a romance). The reader learns along with the likable main characters what is going on through believable dialogue, inner thoughts and action about what is happening, thank you. Our lead characters have somewhat realistic reactions to extraordinary circumstances for a couple of computer geeks. I appreciate that Eric while buff, is still basically himself and not magically transformed into a baddass super-man-like guy. He has little fight experience and it shows. This makes him different from other shifter-heroes that are physically gifted and graceful because they have had experience working with and listening to their animal-instincts. Jessica is at times girly and tough (sort of). All this results in a fun read that could never happen. The seeming underdogs win for now, with a little time to grab a breath before the next wave hits.

There is a lead-in for book 2 (of 6? I think) of the series which stars one of his friends from the group-trip in the beginning of this story. I look forward to the continuation of this series. Will we find out why the bad guys want to kill all humans? Will we learn more about how Gryphons function?

This was my first book to ready by Ruby Ryan, and I loved it. It is also the first book in the Gryphons vs Dragons Series. I quickly purchased the rest of the books in the series to find out what happens next.

Ethan Masterson, a 30 year old who spends his vacation with his college friends the he has not seen in years. They go to Belize and relive their college days with drinking and partying. They are heading back to their respective homes in a couple of days and have a tour scheduled of a cave in the area. With most of the guys hung over, they manage to make their tour, but things get a little weird in the cave and they cut the tour short. A bit on the geeky side, Ethan is not someone you would expect to show alpha tendencies, or attract women, but after this vacation, he has changed.

Jessica, hired from a temp agency to fill in at a company as a Systems Administrator. She finds the job to be fulfilling, but the boss to be a pain in the butt. She also finds that the person she is covering for has a weird filing system for the files on the system. Little does she know that there is a reason for the weird filing system. Jessica has done nothing to make her boss, Mrs. Arnold happy since she has been in the position. Jessica would love to have a permanent position with the company, but fears that it won't work out because making Mrs. Arnold happy is not easy to do.

Jessica and Ethan meet up by chance, because Mrs. Arnold sends Jessica to pick up Ethan from the airport when he comes back from vacation. Little do they know that it may have been fate bringing them together.

This is a paranormal shifter story with heat, suspense, and a very good story background. I loved reading it and look forward to reading the remaining books in the series. I will seek out Ruby Ryan books when I am in the mood for a great shifter story. I suggest you do the same.

Series starter book - Ethan and Jessica

Ethan went to Belize with some of his college best friends to celebrate their ten year reunion. On the last day, they go on a tour through a cave. Something happens and Ethan sees a green light but no one else does. While everyone else is preoccupied, he enters a crawl space and finds a gryphon totem with a green emerald attached to it. He doesn't tell anyone and takes it back to Dallas Texas with him.
Jessica is a temp working in Ethan's office while he is gone. When she has to go pick him up at the airport, he seems sick. They go to the office anyway. The next day Jessica finds him still wearing yesterday's clothes and passed out in his office. She takes him home, finds the totem in his pocket and presses on the emerald. When she does, Ethan starts screaming and then turns into a gryphon.
There is plenty of adventure happening because a dragon talks in his hard telling him that they have to fight. And that when the dragon wins, the world will end. The dragon seems to know exactly what is happening but Ethan doesn't know anything.
With Jessica's help they figure out a few things. We find out that there are six different gems that represent six gryphons. So it appears that there will be six books and we will probably learn a little bit more in each story.
I think this is a good start to a series. It kept me entertained and wanting more. I totally enjoyed reading this new-to-me author.

Great start to a new series.
Ethan and four of his college friends are on a 10 year reunion trip to Belize. After a night of drinking they are dragged on a spelunking trip were Ethan finds a small figure of a gryphon holding an emerald.
Jessica works for a temp agency, currently filling in for Ethan. They don't get off to a good start when he returns from his vacation. When she finds him sick and passed out in his office, she take him home. Helping him to bed she finds the gryphon statue. When she presses the emerald, Ethan transforms. Ethan and Jessica are bound together. Mates. They learn they are key players in an epic battle for control of the Earth. The Emerald Gryphon must fight the Emerald Dragon.
Fun, fast paced and steamy. Loved Ethan and Jessica. Can't wait for the next book.

Like when books have a different kind of shifter than the normal. This one was with a Gryphon and the author took a different tack on how he got his power. This book does have where it switches each chapter with his and her viewpoints. There is a couple mistakes doing this and a couple minor spelling errors. The story flowed well and you felt you were following along with the main characters as things happened and learned what was happening with them. It sounds like there will be another gryphon for the next book and it will have an ongoing theme of war between the dragons and gryphons. Did like how the author put the storyline together and will be checking about more from this author. I did receive an ARC for an honest review from Hidden Gems.

I read the free preview of this book provided by the Author. Although there were some funny and clever lines, throughout the story there were strange turns of phrase that slowed the flow of the story. I felt it could benefit from better editing around descriptions and metaphors, and there were several spelling or typing errors.

It was very difficult to get into the start of the story from the Heroine's point of view because there were pages of computer Techie jargon used in describing her coding work, and I drifted off and considered DNFing at 25%.

In addition, although it may have served the plot, I felt there were just too many TSTL decisions by Hero and Heroine at the start of the book, so I was not motivated to purchase and read the rest of the story.

Different take on shapeshifters and I really liked it a lot. Ethan and four of his college friends are in Belize celebrating their ten year reunion. On the final day, they go on a tour through a cave and in a small crawl space, Ethan finds a small gryphon figure with an emerald attached. He brings it home with him and meets Jessica who works for a temp agency and filling in in Ethan’s work. They get off to a slightly rocky start and then she finds him very sick in his office and takes him home. They soon discover they are connected through the gryphon figure or totem and the adventure begins. Full of heat, romance, adventure, and more.

Another fantastic read by Ruby Ryan, this is the story of Jessica and Ethan. Ethan goes away with his college buddies and finds an emerald totem, after being sick for a couple of days he goes to work and passes out on the lounge. Jessica works as a temp and she finds Ethan passed out so she takes him home to care for him, Jessica touches the totem which makes Ethan jump up and go through the window and what she see’s is unbelievable. That’s all of the spoilers I’m giving you. Great storyline and characters and I can’t wait for book 2. I definitely recommend this book it’s well worth the read.

This is part of a series about men that find a totem and discover they have the ability to become gryphons and must battle dragons out to kill them. The men find their mates as well.

Ethan and Jessica are brought together by his finding a totem on his last journey. When he collapses, she is there and his transition begins. They feel a connection and realize they are mates who belong together. They have to unite to battle the enemy.

I like the mixture of action and adventure and romance. It is fast-paced and keeps your interest. The characters are well-developed and the relationship between them feels real and genuine.

I am voluntarily reviewing a copy I received.

I received this as part of an ARC review. Ethan finds a gryphon figurine with an emerald in Belize while vacationing. He feels under the weather after finding it until the temp at his office triggers the transformation to his unknown gryphon form. They soon find out Jessica is his mate and controls the change for Ethan. They are still learning about the gryphon when the emerald dragon attacks. Ethan wins the first battle but it is not over. Ethan and Jessica are making plans for themselves and have confessed their love for each other. At the end, the second gryphon awakens. The story is very action packed.

I signed up for an ARC for this book and I'm glad I did. Being a fan of paranormal stories I was intrigued by the choice of shape shifting species the hero turns into. A Gryphon! Not something I've come across before. As soon I started reading I couldn't put it down. The whole story unfolds in just a few days' time and the relationship between the hero and the heroine evolves as quickly. There's an ages old feud between dragon shifters and gryphon shifters, of which we only learn just the basics. There are a lot more but this being the first book in the series it just whets our appetite for more. Well done! I'm hooked! I'll definitely read the rest!

Ruby Ryan’s Emerald Gryphon (first of her Gryphons vs Dragons books) is wonderful and easily worth five stars. Thrilling adventure, hot paranormal romance, shapeshifters ... I am SO there. This was one truly fun novel and definitely recommended. It had just what I wanted, was well written, with excellent world building and a great plot, and it’s leads, Ethan and Jessica, and cast of supporting characters were simply superb. But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises - the book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely highly recommended.

interesting enough for lazy day read

While the characters are not deep and well-rounded, the story has an idea that I have never read until now...dragons vs gryphons. The author chose to slowly reveal the history of the gryphon and dragon feud along with pertinent information for the gryphons that could mean life or death. This means the info is spread throughout the series. I am curious to find out how it all works, including finding their mates. The pacing was okay though there were unnecessary adult scenes. I did find myself skimming over those parts after a while.

I will give the next book a try on Kindle Unlimited. 2.5-3 stars

This first book in the series by Ruby Ryan that grabs the reader from the first mention of the emerald to the last words on the cliffhanging page leading into the next book. I thoroughly enjoyed the characters, the love/mate aspect, the battle between the dragons and gryphon, and of course, there was plenty of sexual moments. I think what I liked best about this book was the way the author handled the shifting aspects of her characters. I can't wait to read the second book in this series. This is a rather late voluntary review of an Advanced Reader Copy of this book from Booksprout.

First let me state, I received an Advance Reader Copy, (ARC), but this in no way influences my review. I always leave an honest review. Also, this author is new to me.

This is book 1, & I know it can be read as a standalone, but I started this series out of order & now finally I've read this one, and it's gr8. I love Jessica, she's so strong & stubborn. I also love Ethan, he's so funny and strong as well, & he & Jessica belong together. I'm looking forward to all of the following stories, and so far I've read books 1 - 4. I recommend this read. 5 Thumbs up

1st in a series this was a fun read. Ethan finds a totem of a gryphon with an emerald embedded in it in a cave in Belize and the game is on. The one thing that bothered me was lack of history and help for Ethan. The dragon seemed to know everything about what was going on while Ethan know nothing. I hope this is going to change in future books. Really liked this book and the humor was another plus.

Interesting

This really grateful s your attention and moves at a fast clip through the whole story! Great twist on shifter tales and while it is a series, it doesn't leave you with a cliffhanger ending. A bit too much descriptive sex scenes for my taste, but I skipped over those pages for the story. Good read.

I recieved an advance reader copy of this book. While it was enjoyable, at times I felt it was frustrating due to the lack of detail. I’m hoping with subsequent books the author adds more backstory, as I was left confused about what the focus of the paranormal line was about. The characters were realistic, I just felt the storyline could have been expanded on further
