Despite the cover, this is a special-ops thriller first and foremost, with loyalty to family, genetic and extended, second, and sexy bits last. With all the quick trigger fingers and short fuses, the only slow burn here is the romance. Still, it runs deep and true.

The battles are intense and gritty. The camaraderie is excellent, though the parental drama was a bit over done. There are dozens of characters, with more introduced in each book, so this series could go on for quite a while.

I'm in.

Three and a half stars.

I read the first book in this series a couple of years ago, at that time I likened the novel to Elle Kennedy's excellent Killer Instincts series or Julie Ann Walker's Black Knights Inc series. Having read the second book I'm going to downgrade my initial euphoria. This is the spec-ops equivalent of space opera (in my opinion).

So, a brief recap, Viviana “Quillery” Chambers is 50% of the operational powerhouse known as the Quillery Edge, her BFF Mary is The Edge. Together she and Mary have masterminded more SpecOps missions than anyone else. They were the brains behind the business known as The Hive, which turned out to be a front for a group of terrorists called The Collective.

Mary and Vi developed the cutting edge HERA security program and The Collective will do anything to get its hands on the tech.

In the last book Mary got together with Dylan Mason. He and his six brothers run a rival organisation, The Arsenal, based in their small home town.

Jud 'the Judge" Jensen is an assassin working within The Collective but somehow aloof, when The Collective put a $6 million hit on Vi he steps in to threaten to kill anyone who attempts the assassination because years ago Vi saved his brother Danny when a mission went sideways. When The Collective ups the ante by kidnapping Jud's brother Jud realises he has to make a choice and he chooses to walk away from the dark side and join up with Quillery Edge and The Arsenal.

If you love high octane suspense where everyone has unique skills, everyone belongs to a group with a shadowy name (The Hive, The Arsenal, The Collective, Quillery Edge etc), there are geniuses and spec-ops heroes everywhere and mysterious faceless enemies you will adore this. It's fast-paced, engaging crack-cocaine that doesn't take itself too seriously.

Having said that, Cara Carnes doesn't need her spec-op heroes to rescue her heroines, these gals are more likely to be the ones doing the rescuing! Her heroines are (mentally) strong, extraordinarily bright, focused and loyal through and through. I thought this novel was going to focus on the troubles in the local town rather than Quillery - can't wait to see where the next novel leads us.

If you don't take this too seriously I think you will love this.

As I got ready to read this book I remembered the first in the series and went back and reread (something I rarely do) that one. I love this series and its characters. I cannot wait for the next one to come out!

Fierce females and hot alpha males with lots of action, a tight bond with each other because no one else can truly understand what these people go through unless you've been there.

When the contract comes down to take the Quillery Edge out and try to get their program one man has a debt to pay these ladies that may cost him his life. Vi isn't concerned about the contract but she is concerned about her friend and partner, Mary, and getting vengeance. After all having a contract out isn't new.

Please read book one (Jagged Edge) so get the full experience, otherwise you'll be missing alot and this is a fantastic series!

I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Sight Lines is the second romantic suspense story in the Arsenal series and I like it much more than the first, Jagged Edge.

Viviana is the other half of Quillery Edge, the Quillery to Mary's Edge, half of the world's best back office operations team and she's hellbent on getting revenge on the people who kidnapped and tortured her best friend. When there's a $6 million hit put on her, she's even more determined to keep her, her best friend and her new team, The Arsenal, safe. When she and Judson collide into each other's lives, she has no idea he'll be the one to help her. But, does Jud the assassin have a secret agenda? One that's contrary to hers?

Sight Lines was more well rounded than Jagged Edge. Because it's the second in the series, I was more comfortable with the many characters that make up the ensemble cast of the Arsenal world, so all the details missing from the previous book weren't as necessary here. However, I still felt a little lost, because Cara Carnes hasn't completely fleshed out the motivations and the backstories of each character. Jud and Viv make a badass, really sexy couple, though, even more so than Dylan and Mary did in Jagged Edge. They work together flawlessly and their relationship develops naturally and organically. There's action, suspense, a little bit of steam, and intimate emotional moments so necessary for the best romantic suspense, giving Sight Lines serious credibility in the genre. I am so looking forward to more from this world!

When I saw this book had been released I was excited to read it having fallen in love with the men and women in this series after reading the first book. A word of warning, this should not be read as a stand alone. You will need to read the first book in the series in order to understand this book.

The book started off with a bang, no surprise there. I was eager to see how Viv dealt with the aftermath of what happened to Mary and how Mary found her way back to her life once again.

This book was a HUGE disappointment; to the point that I stopped reading about 60% of the way through. I have no idea where the strong, fierce Viv went from the first book but she definitely wasn't in this one. Judson manages to bulldoze her almost from the beginning of the book; he doesn't just want to take care of her but he wants to control her. Which she allows him to do!

Viv comes across as this weak little woman who can't take care of herself. Despite being a genius and created programs that help in the most dangerous missions, we're lead to believe that Viv can't take care of herself or make decisions on her own. This just didn't mesh with the character that was built up from the first book.

Sight Lines is romantic suspense at it’s very best. Take one bad ass assassin and mess with his family and you bring down hell on your whole operation. Better yet add in the genius back office operator you are being blackmailed to kill and Armageddon will seem tame. When Jud and Vi meet the world is shifted on its axis and you will enjoy the ride. Action, adventure and love a terrific addition to the series.

I adore to the extreme all of the 'Arsenal' books... it's just I think... I think that Jud holds a very special place in my heart... he is the best of the best as a badass of an assassin, but he has a great moral compass... Love Vi too... and love all the pieces putting into place all of our character's backstories... onto Dallas and Kamren for me... 😉

17/12/20
How do I love Jud? Let me count the ways... nope... I can't there really are too many!

The whole set-up of this story... the backstory... the execution. Just love it. I love that within sentences a new character can totally get all of your focus. I love the way that new characters are mentioned... and we just know that they will be in some future part of the series. I still think that Viviana's parents ( and brother ) got off a little too lightly. That first scene in the lobby with them... her father was going to hit her... and that didn't appear to be something that was new to her. And the way that her mother spoke to her... it was just... nasty.

Happy reader, happy sighs.

01/08/21 Just finished listening to the Audible version... coupla things... there is still an error... Viviana's dad refers to Dr. Sinclair... as 'Rebecca Sinclair' rather than 'Amanda'... Rebecca is Momma Mason. Also pretty sure Jarold is referred to as 'Harold' on one occasion... And I would love to know how Jud fell into the Collective... I mean, what was his motivating force? How did he find them? He had been involved for over 20 years... why? How did his moral compass justify it? Also, although it isn't strictly relevant... I would love to know all their ages... I mean, if Jud had been involved for over 20 years... he is 40+? Also... same for Vi and Mary. They met at MIT when they were 15... they worked for HIVE for 15 years+... so, mid-late 30's? As I said, not crucial... just interesting... Doesn't change my love for this series... or Jud!😉

Sight Lines is the second book in The Arsenal series and this review is more about the series than just this one book. Cara Carnes creates a masterpiece with unlimited possibilities. While all the books can be read as a stand-alone, I suggest you start from the beginning. You don’t want to miss a single moment of strong, sexy men and beautiful, smart money overcoming all odds. If you are looking for a book or series that you can get lost in, that will keep you up at night and make you wonder what happens next while you are grocery shopping, dig in to this series. It comes to life before your eyes.

When a computer geek’s and an assassin teams up, they are unbeatable. Vi Quillery is the other half of the dynamic duo that runs HERA, a computer system that could orchestrate a war all on its own. Jud is a long-time assassin testing out The Arsenal waters to see what life is like outside of the black. While trying to build The Arsenal into the Mason brother’s dream paramilitary organization, someone puts a hit out on Viviana. When Jud’s brother is kidnapped by his previous employer, he vows to protect Vi while she helps him find his brother. The control room heats up when Jud finds himself falling for the brilliant, sassy Vi. Jud will do anything, including bringing the assassin back to life, to protect his family. This is Vi and Jud’s story.

Throughout this series, Cara's characters show you that even the smartest and strongest of all of us can benefit from professional counseling. We all have things in our lives that just doesn't make sense and need talked through.

Cara also gives you a bonus nugget. Between every book is a novella that is available on “Cara Carnes Author” Facebook page for free. Then, while you are waiting on the next book in the series, check out The Counterstrike Series to meet up again with all your favorite Arsenal folks.

Double Tap is the free read novella after Sight Lines and before Blood Vows (book 3).

I first read Jagged Edge, which is Book 1 in this series. I loved it so much that even though I got it free as an ARC I bought it for a forever copy, and promptly pre-ordered this one. (even though I already had an ARC copy of this as well) I am so glad that I did. This is such a great book. This one revolves around Quillery/Viviana and Judson/The Judge. Quillery is on a mission to take down the people responsible for the kidnapping and torture of Mary/Edge in Book 1. Jud is tasked with following through with a hit on Quillery Edge and taking possession of there program HERA. Unfortunately for the powers that be, they went about getting Jud's acquiescence in all the wrong ways. Now he's taking his one man show and working with Quillery Edge to take down his employers.

While working with Arsenal, Jud develops feelings for Vi and sparks fly. The heat between them is intense from the beginning and is not hindered by the action and drama that ensues when opposite sides collide. As with the first book, this one is well written, with well developed characters and realistic dialog for each character. The book is so intense at times, I felt like I couldn't read it as fast as the energy in the story warranted. I absolutely love this story, the characters, the different story arcs, and how the whole thing played out in general. Though this, like Jagged Edge, can be read as a standalone, it is absolutely worth reading them in order... recommended, but not necessary.

Overall, it is safe to say that I have no qualms recommending this book. I can't wait to read more from the Arsenal team, there are so many characters that I am falling in love with and look forward to seeing their stories play out. I hope there is a book for each of the Mason's, as well as Gage and Fallon, and so many others. I can't wait to see what Cara Carnes has in store next.

Loved it

Great story, fast paced and a little steamy. Jud Jenson or the Judge, works in black ops, for a powerful criminal group known as the Collective. He is an elite assassin and is being coerced into taking a hit on Quillery Edge. He is not to be trifled with. He owes Quillery Edge for the life of his brother in law, and has put an off limits warning out. He is taking it a step further by going to The Arsenal and becoming their shield. He is using his ties to Dallas Mason as an in.

Loved Jed, a complicated man. A deadly lone wolf, with his own moral code and who would do anything for family. He is a fierce protector to his nephew Jacob, a 19 year old genius who wants to be like Quillery Edge. Extends that to the Arsenal, in general and Vi in particular. I loved his parents.

When the Collective makes its move. The Arsenal deals them a fatal blow. Dallas finds his time with the Collective left him with more than just nightmares. His family has his back. They have a name. They are on the hunt.

Riley learns what her over protective big brothers really do. She comes up with a plan that will free them up from the ranch, the day to day operations of the Arsenal, and the protection of their town, so they can do their Badass thing. Jud is going to help.

Loved Vi and Jed. Zoey is going to be an interesting addition to the team along with Jacob. Jed's friend Krostof, hope he will be joining the team. Can't wait for the next book.

Tensions are Rising
'Sight Lines' is the absolutely fantastic second book in The Arsenal by Cara Carnes. She is a new author to me but I was so impressed with the way she created such a fabulous storyline with amazing characters and had me sitting on the edge of my seat waiting to see what would happen next in this suspenseful romantic thriller. Mary and Vi are the best back room operatives in the business and Mary was kidnapped, tortured but, fortunately, rescued before she gave any secrets away. She now, however, suffers from PTSD which is totally understandable given the circumstances.  But now someone has put a $2million  hit for their deaths but $6million if they can get all the secrets of HERA! Unfortunately, they have chosen the wrong man to blackmail into doing this for them as Judson has his own reasons for keeping the two women alive and betraying his so called 'boss'!  The tension in the story is palpable and I could almost 'feel' when something dramatic was going to happen as Cara writes this style of writing so very well.  Her characterization of Vi, Mary and Jud are first class.  I'm now going to get a copy of 'Jagged Edge' which is the first book and tells us about Mary's ordeal.  Can't wait for Cara's next book to be published. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Sight Lines is the second book in the Arsenal Series by Cara Carnes. While it is not necessary to read the first in the series, Jagged Edge, it does give you Mary’s story which is closely tied to Viviana’s. However, the author gives the needed background for Sight Lines to read well on its own.

This is a series that is high on action, latest technology and emotional turmoil with romance being part of the story. Sight Lines continues that vein which makes this a romance thriller of a story. My only expectation was I had thought that Vi would connect with one of the Arsenal team as Mary had. Ms. Carnes changes this up by bringing in an outsider with Jud and his nephew. This is amazing, keeping the story from becoming predictable especially in the romance element.

The Mason family including sister and mother are all there for support, but this is Vi and Jud’s story. Tough choices, vile bad guys and a great support team keep this story flowing. More secrets of the overarching theme are revealed but not completely solved. This is a series that keeps me reading and guessing.

An ARC of the book was given to me by the publisher through Net Galley which I voluntarily chose to read and reviewed. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This may be only book two of the series but holy wow am I in love with girls of the Pentagon and the boys of the Arsenal. Not only do you get strong badass men but you get just as strong and brilliant nerdy women. Viviana “Quillery” is the main focus for this one. Not only is she fighting a battle of mental wills over what happen to her partner Mary "Edge" in the first book Jagged Edge but the new complications that arise in taking down the Hive. New enemies popped up and Jud "The Judge" comes to the Arsenal/Quillery Edge for support. Let me tell you as soon as Vi and Jud meet you can just feel the sexual tension from the very start. I love the slow build between Vi and Jud. Jud is hot lone wolf that when it comes down to it fits so well with the Arsenal. I'm loving all the new additions to the team. Sight Lines is one heck of a ride that will leave you on the edge of your seat flipping through the pages. I'm seriously in love with this series and can't wait to get my hands on the next book. Cara Carnes does an amazing job bringing the brains and brawn together to form a badass team.

The Quillery (Vi) Edge (Mary) has gone through a lot now someone has put out a contract on them. The payout 2 Million for them dead with a bonus of an additional 6 Million if they get HERA, the computer defense system they developed, as well.

Judson is livid when he's offered the contract, his family owes Quillery Edge big time. No matter that he works as an assassin for the Collective, those two women were off limits. Now he has to convince them that he is on their side and keep anyone from collecting on the contract.

This book takes on a rapid fire momentum that will have you turning page after page as time slips by you.

Non-stop strategizing, and action both in the field and behind the scenes, as Jud comes to the realization that Vi is the one for him.

Family drama and more top off the beginning of a very hot and sexy relationship.
There's plenty of laughs, some tears and downright sizzle.

I do recommend you read the first book, Jagged Edge before this one. You will definitely get more out of it that way, the buy link is below.

I can't wait for the next book in this series!

I quite enjoyed this second book in the Arsenal series. The story continues where book one “Jagged Edge” left off and kicks ass just as well as its predecessor. The story is well written and at times quite emotional, with some major special ops action and plenty of intrigue and suspense. Once again, the women – the Brainiac back office ops, and ‘HERA’, their weaponized security system rule this story. We are introduced to Jud, aka ‘The Judge’ – a badass contract assassin who comes out of the darkness to play protector and pretty much steamrolls his way into Viviana’s business. I enjoyed their interactions and the slow dance that began their steamy relationship. The writing was smooth, the characters were well developed and the plot held my interest from start to finish. I’m looking forward to the next book in the series.

I have fallen for this series with the characters taking me along for each of their stories. The first one told the half of this duo and this one tells the other part. The Edge is one that you don't want to under estimate with in this Viviana being the focus. She is one that takes over for the duo it seems after Mary's ordeal but then she also has extra backing. The are now in a place teamed up with a group that is learning to become one strong machine it would seem. When Jud and his nephew come along you will be a goner sucked into their story as also the heat and fire burns you along with them. This continues to show the strength and power behind this group with the enemies getting a taste first hand. The drama will pull you to the edge with them being the razor on how closely you get. From beginning to end it will own you.

There was only one bad thing about this book - I basically sat here doing nothing whilst engrossed in the story! NOTHING!

Anyone wanting to read this book will seriously struggle without having read book one in the series. Book one was difficult enough. The action in this book was awesome. The imagination to set up the Arsenal, teams, tech and the Warriors Path is exceptional.

Romance? Well this one was the other half of the edge/quillery duo, Viv. The coder and all round computer genius. She meets and falls in love with an exceptional Ninja/lone wolf operative from a black ops agency called the collective. These baddies are paying for a hit on the duo and their tech called HERA.

Lots of stuff happens, romance, meeting old friends and setting up the next lot of romance for book three. Definitely gonna read that just not today🙃

This book starts where the first one left off. Vi is determined to get justice for her best friend Mary who was kidnapped and tortured in the first book. Now someone from the Collective has put a hit on "Quillery Edge" made up of Vivianna (Vi) 'Quillery' Chambers and Mary 'Edge' Reynolds. Unfortunately for them the man they have hired to carry out the hit has an agenda of his own. This was a fantastic read. The story was well written with action and suspense that will keep you on the edge of your seat turning the pages. Loved the simmering romance between Vi and Jud, they worked flawlessly together. I'm really enjoying this series and can't wait for the next book. I voluntarily received an advance readers copy for an honest review.

*I received a free copy of this book which I voluntarily chose to write an honest review for.

OMG now we get Quillery!! She is the second half of the awesome Quillery Edge that we met in book one. She is still trying to protect Mary when Jud "Judge" shows up claiming there is a contract on the duo and he will keep them safe. Apparently he is a well known assassin go figure, but can he really keep them safe from the full might of The Collective until they can take them down? Knowing these women I would so be in their corner. Adding the Mason's and Arsenal are just the cherry on top I must say. I cannot believe how detailed these books are!! Each one blows my mind and totally hooks me on the romance at the same time. If you like romantic suspense with a military feel to it then you so have to read this book/series. I loved it so I give it 5/5 stars.

Intense Action, Loads of Fun

A powerhouse of a paramilitary romance. Viviana, okayed for field work, has tracked down her partner’s torturers and rapists, with only a few left to go - and she begins uncovering the nastiness that is the Collective. Luckily she’s got their deadliest assassin on her side. She and Jud dance around each other slowly peeling through protective layers while all the intrigue happens around them. Hey, I stayed up late while sick reading this book. It’s good.

Mix in their families and there’s so much irony happening. The resolution with Viviana’s family is perhaps too pat (the short story on the author’s website goes into how long it lasts) and warm and happyish, which was a tad strange. And Jud’s family was extra warm.

Betrayal, danger, suspense, sexual tension, alpha men, fierce women, loving bonds, vengeance, action...Sight Lines is one of those stories that goes on my reading obsession list. Judge is one of the best heroes I've read in a while. I loved him. He was fiercely protective of not just Vi, but of his family. There is a slow burn intensity between Judge and Vi, written just right to show the chemistry between the two characters. Vi is a strong woman that doesn't back down, even though guilt is part of what drives her. I will definitely be re-reading this one. I highly recommend.

What a fantastic second book in a series. Viviana and Judson - The Quillery and The Judge. A contract is in place to terminate The Quillery Edge and Judson, an assassin has decided that he is going to ensure that doesn't happen. Who needs a team when you have a one man killing machine! The attraction between Viviana and Judson is off the charts. The action is off the charts and the love story, phew, its hot! I am loving this series. It contains lots of hot alpha males, strong sassy females and a family you just want to be part of. You need to read this book and this series. You will not regret it!

Craziness!

Wow each book just gets better and better. So much was unearthed in this book. And we got so much more info. Love Jud. The proverbial bad boy assassin who is enthralled with Vi/quillery. And has made it his mission to protect the quillary edge from the hit out out on them and acquisition of HERA. Loved him and Jacob and learning about his dad Danny and their prior connection to the quillery edge. Loved Jud putting smack down on her crap family. So awesome. He is lethal and watching him transition was cool. Then we get a bomb dropped on Dallas. WOW. Omg. No words. Can’t wait for next book.

Sight Lines was intense. It didn't mess around in what it took for Jud and Vi to accomplish their missions and to know what they wanted. Vi thought that she had to go it alone and be responsible for everyone. Jud made his decisions and acted. These two couldn't have been more perfect in their imperfect ways. I loved the banter over cat versus dog. The story highlighted the power of family – the good, the bad, the related family and the chosen family. This is the second in the series, it can be read as a stand alone. You will want to read the first at some point.

So, with the first book in this series, I was hooked from the first page. This one took me a while. I’d say at around 30% is when I was really getting invested into the characters. This one was a bit slower moving. That being said, this was really good. I really loved our new hot, bad boy. The missions were good and the supporting characters were great. The girls are always bad ass. I loved the small bits with family members in this one because it gave us more insight to the characters. It ended great. I look forward to the next book in the series.

I read Carnes' first book in this series - I LOVED it. I read this one right after it came out - LOVED it too.

Cannot say following too many times: Carnes has a way with words, I, as the reader, could once again really feel everything she wrote about happening to me.
I had goosebumps, I laughed and I shed tears - some happy, some sad.

Quillery's mission is to take down the people responsible for Edge's torture in book 1. Jud the assassin is tasked with taking out Quillery Edge altogether - in order to get his brother back.

Well, the bad guys definitely messed with the wrong operatives.

Jud partners with Quillery Edge and the Mason clan, there's sparks flying and lots of heat between Jud and Vi. The specifics about planning and executing a military op is so well written as are the dialogs between the characters.

While reading I felt so energised, I loved the plot twists and how the whole thing comes together in the end.

Looking forward for more from Cara Carnes - hat's off to you.

'Two letters and one syllable don't do you justice'

Boom! You lose your heart to Jud. He may have lived his life in the shadows, may be an assassin feared by the toughest of men, but he is brought to his knees by a tiny slip of a woman! A tiny slip of a woman who is filled with sass and brains! Vi is so much bigger, smarter and feistier than her name suggests, but she is also broken and buckling under the pressure. The pressure to protect everyone, control everything, be perfect....
Book two in an amazing series, I look forward to many more books and to finding DJ!
