I have been studying the book of Revelation for over 35 years and have read numerous books on the subject. Douglas Connelly's book is by far the best I've read. It is clear and concise and presents other viewpoints without bias. If you're looking for a thorough Bible study on Revelation get this book. I can only guess that the people who rated it one star either are not Christians, did not finish it, or hold an opposing viewpoint on one of the interpretations.
I have always had difficulty with Revelation. What is intended to be symbolic? What is intended to be literal? What does it all mean?
The title of the book is "The Book of Revelation Made Clear." The author gets full credit for tackling a monumental undertaking. Did he nail it? I am not sure he did.
The positives: he acknowledged that there are multiple different interpretations. He often explained or allowed proponents of a particular view to explain their belief and sometimes why they read the text that way. The author would then pick his own interpretation and usually offer support for that.
That is a perfectly sound approach to material like this. Unfortunately, it does not make the material "clear." Do I leave this feeling any deeper understanding of Revelation? I am not sure that I do. There is another book that has the exact same title, written by other Bible scholars. I had intended to read them back to back and share and compare. After reading this, however, and remembering how beat up the text always made me feel...I am going to take a break and read something a bit lighter. Just about anything qualifies.
If you want help with understanding the book of Revelation, this book will do that for you. This is a “beginner-level” text that makes for a good introduction to the last book of the Bible. The books layout makes it possible to use as a study guide of sorts as you read through the book Revelation. The author takes a Pre-Trib & Pre-Mill view of Revelation but he also does a decent job explaining other views in an honest manner. While holding the Pre-Trib and Pre-Mill view, the author spends little-to-no time discussing Dispensationalism. This helps the reader stick to the focus of the book - understanding the book of Revelation. The resources listed in the back of the book represent a wide spectrum of views and interpretations on Revelation. Most of these are quoted throughout the book.
I found this to be easy to read and understand. It really helped me to better understand Revelation to a deeper level. When it was an opinion by the author that was plainly stated. Otherwise scripture was accurate and well described. Thank you Douglas Connelly for you excellent presentation of scripture.
I read this along with a Revelation Bible study. It cleared things up. Some things. I think you could study revelation for years and not really know the meanings for absolute certain.
2.5-3 it definitely held my hand while we both [the author and i] made our way through Revelation which can be scary, but also was a bit confusing at times.
This was a fantastic book! I appreciated that it is straight forward and presented with multiple viewpoints. I will certainly be reading more books by this author. I'm using this book as a guide to teach Revelation to elementary-age students (In a very G-rated sort of way. I want them to sleep at night!) and this book has been a perfect guide.
I found this book very rewarding and found that it is a very short and to the point and detailed book about the book of revelation it most defiantly helped me understand the book of reevaluation. 5 sttars would give more
