In 1964 John Caldwell started the North American boom in this happiest and most versatile of environmental snow sports with his classic The Cross-Country Ski Book, the first book devoted entirely to the subject. Since then it has been completely rewritten and newly illustrated, and now comes the fourth edition, with three extra chapters — for new tourskiers, on the one-day tour, and updating equipment. Among his "over 30 years of taking off on X-C skis right from my own back door"; U.S. Team coach 1965 through 1972; a director of the National Hiking and Ski Touring Association; examiner for the Association of Certified Professional Ski Instructors (CPSI); a trustee of the U.S. Ski Education Foundation.
John Homer Caldwell was a retired Nordic skier who competed in the 1952 Winter Olympics, then became a cross-country ski coach and authority on cross-country skiing. He wrote a series of books that helped popularize and develop understanding of recreational cross-country skiing in the United States.
