When I decided to go through with reading all of the Trollhunters books, I expected it to go downhill in quality for some reason, possibly based on the fact that series often do just that, whether it's books, anime, movies, or Netflix series. Lookin' at you, Voltron. Especially after the second book, I wasn't sure if the rest would be as good as the first.
I was very wrong.
While the second book detailed many things that went unexplained about Jim's two-week gap of time in the Darklands between season 1 and season 2 (like how he knows how to prepare nyarlagroth eggs, how he obtained chalk, and even what the talking fireball from season 1 was)--the story, I felt, was a little lacking, or just didn't feel quite feasible for the Trollhunters universe; I couldn't quite picture it as an actual episode. Everyone was in character, but something just didn't quite hit the mark, and I still can't place what it is.
Meanwhile, this installment shines. Not only can I hear all the characters' voices clearly in my head, the story follows a very episode-feasible storyline, and I'm actually finding myself sad that this wasn't produced into an actual episode. It explained a few things from season 2 that were bugging me, such as what the Book of Ga-Huel actually is and why it exists (one would hope so with such a titular focus), what happened to Unkar the Unfortunate (yes, finally!), and one other thing that is quite a large spoiler, though not unpredictable. Even so, I'll put it here:
The conclusion I've come to? I need to finish these companion books, because they expound so much on a story I love dearly.
I read this for research while writing my Trollhunters fanfic "One Petal at a Time." Great book and lots of helpful content in regard to what I wanted to know.
Probably the best tie in so far, adds an interesting story that might easily be an episode of the series without drifting too much from the canon of it, interesting new characters and good plotline
