When Faith showed up to work a gig as a server at a wedding dinner, she never expected to be kidnapped, much less to be faced with proof that werewolves are real. A mistaken identity has landed her squarely in the middle of a Were feud, the Russians against the Roanoke pack. Unless she uses all her diplomacy to rein in Laurence, the Were captured with her, the pair may be the first casualties…
Rhiannon Held writes urban fantasy, along with space opera and weird western (as R.Z. Held). She lives in Seattle, where she works as an archaeologist for an environmental compliance firm. At work, she mostly uses her degree for copy-editing technical reports; in writing, she uses it for cultural world-building; in public, she'll probably use it to check the mold seams on the wine bottle at dinner.
I read this book as part of the SFINCS3 competition. I awarded it 7/10. I thought the writing in this novella was good and it drew me in to the story, which was one I would not normally read. I am not a big fan of shifter stories, but if you are, particularly with werewolves you will no doubt love this one! I felt a little disconnected with the main character as I thought she would be much more shocked and terrified that she had discovered werewolves were real, and then found herself kidnapped and locked up with one!! Instead of feeling terrified she feels compassion and starts to become attracted to him. Perhaps this is a necessary element for this genre, but it felt a little convoluted to me. I did enjoy reading this novella but it has not converted me to a genre I don’t usually read!

When Faith showed up to work a gig as a server at a wedding dinner, she never expected to be kidnapped. Unless she uses all her diplomacy to rein in Laurence, the Were captured with her, the pair may be the first casualties. A good storyline well-written with suspense. It can be read as a standalone
3.4 stars Goodreads; 3.9 Amazon. Abrupt ending, but good.
Some things happen in this story with insufficient explanation, because the events that explain THESE events presumably happen in the concurrent concluding full-length novel (Death-touched), instead.
The way the interactions between the leads progress is realistically depicted, and the way the story has to end makes sense, but the last section was all pretty quick, and a little disappointing. (I also might prefer a slightly more "vanilla" sexy scene that what Faith is eager for, though it's not really extreme or anything.)
I'm glad I decided to take a break from the mainly-lackluster short story anthology I'm currently halfway through to read something quick (but not SO quick) by an author I know I enjoy. The writing is very good, and I didn't spot any proofreading errors. Faith, the PoV character, is a likable, practical, and relatable protagonist, and emotionally messed-up Laurence (just removed by Andrew Dare from his mishandled position of Richmond sub-alpha) is a sympathetic one.
I liked the characters well enough. Faith was a funny spitfire but I found Laurence to be a bit bland. He just didn't stand out much as a strong character. I rated this book 3½ stars because I felt that it seemed to go in circles quite a bit and not really get anywhere. I found concentrating on it to be a little difficult because it wasn't holding my attention. I normally really like shifter stories but this one just really wasn't doing it for me.

she showed up for work at a wedding when she is kidnapped. she now learns about weres and there is trouble coming. they are in the middle of a battle and she needs to work hard to get herself out of this danger. will she do it? will she fall for him? what will happen? see where it will take you

I did enjoy reading this book, but the ending left me unsatisfied, both went there separate ways and not sure what the mystery stone has to do with the story, maybe the next book will give the answers

Very good storytelling, well-written and full of exciting suspense in every word! This quick read involves secondary characters in the main storyline but can be read as standalone. I loved it! I did receive a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
