This is a book about children made into assassins without their permission. The main characters are Echo and Alpha, or by their childhood names, Eliza and August. They came together as young children and were placed into a team to work together. Eliza has always been an emotional person and her line of work is difficult. She can never kiss anyone without killing them. Her lips are deadly and laced with poison and she is used by the Executive, to assassinate those they want her to. August works with her in their team, always there to protect her, sometimes from a distance with a sniper rifle, others times close up as her driver or bodyguard, for whatever situation she is placed in. August is a silent, strong type, he doesn’t like to be touched and doesn’t show any emotions.
The Executive runs teams of genetic aberrants, such as Alpha and Echo, all with code names dependant on their skills and uses. None of them have ever known any other sort of life. They have been raised from early childhood into these roles. The only way out is death. No-one leaves the Executive voluntarily, they are only retired! Another character in the book is named Romeo, a British operative, for their version of the Executive, which as you can guess, is a man who makes others fall in love with him and also has a dangerous mouth on him. Then there is Echo’s roommate, Juliet, who cannot touch another person, skin on skin as her touch is deadly to all. She is the only kind of friend she has, but not a true friend she can trust with her up most secrets and wishes for the future.
Her latest assignment is to kill a young tycoon’s son called Jamieson Hart. She has to get close to him and get him to fall for her, so she can get to kiss and kill him. But, before she can, someone else is killed and she is left wondering who did it and how it will affect her mission. Will she be punished for her failure? Solitary confinement is the usual punishment, leading up to permanent retirement for any serious failure. She hates what she does and getting close to Jamieson and having to work with Romeo instead of August, brings a lot of feelings to the fore and makes her realise she can’t live without August and she doesn’t want to see him die, even for her.
There is a secret group amongst those with these genetic aberrations’, called Mongoose. Somehow this group have managed to keep their identities secret and are after something that only Jamieson Hart and his father have. Others in the Hart organisation have been targeted to gain this information, but now it is down to Echo, Romeo or Alpha to come through with the goods. What the secret is, will be too devastating for Echo and her emotional state, to comprehend. What has been done for decades will finally be revealed and is a shock well worth the wait. What chance there may be for Echo and Alpha to have a future life together, away from their life of assassination, is far-fetched and difficult to imagine.
A great storyline of home grown assassins, raised from childhood and knowing no other kind of life. Being treated as commodities to be used and abused as necessary. The idea behind these genetic aberrations is hard to believe and the reasoning behind it is pure evil. What man will do to others, often weaker or more susceptible than them, is more than you can imagine, but this is often what some will do. A life as only a tool for destruction and death, is more than Echo can live with, but she can’t leave Alpha behind. A great tale and I hope there is more to come from these characters, this could just be the tip of the iceberg! A great read for all! I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
I feel like there was a prequel to this book that I missed or some backstory you needed to know before reading this particular book; however none of those things were available, which makes this a standalone novel for now.
The author has written the story expecting her readers to be familiar with characters and the story already, which is a major negative point, because it didn’t make sense. The book was too short for such a strong plot. Could have been better.
You know what else could have been better,? August. And what was up with him. There were was no depth to the characters and they didn’t feel like our own. This was not a story. It was just a book.
A very enjoyable and entertaining read, with an interesting and effective blending of espionage, romance, and superpower genres that left me already looking forward to more. Its pacing is well managed and keeps the excitement and tension going just right, and the characters are well written and believable.
The real core of the book and what brings it all together to work so well is the powerful emotions of the main character and her development - it draws you in and doesn't let you go until the end. I'd definitely recommend it to fans of any of these genres, as well as to anyone who is just looking for something exciting or emotional.
I don't know who decided to call this a thriller, but they're lying. I wanted to call this an Archer/X-Men crossover fanfic, but I actually love Archer, X-Men, and fanfiction and don't want to be mean to them.
None of the characters were developed enough for me to give a darn about them, and the plot wasn't interesting enough to distract me from that lack. Overall a bummer.
see you later alpha-gator . Those were the words she spoke the only time she had ever seen her friend and partner laugh and smile
Echo was an operative who had been brought to work for the Executive when she was a child. An aberrant, her lips were poison to whomever she kissed - and she had an immunity to most poison
Her partner was an Alpha, trained to be an emotionless protector. X-ray eyes were his special gift.
These two were partners since their childhood. Meant to be working for the good and safety of their nations.
A few things become clear to Echo - including her attraction to her partner, and a few other gents. She notices the pain that a co-worker seems wracked by. A Juliet, her touch causes people to fall in love. How horrible to kill so many you’d been intimate with.
Echo questions loyalties, love and faith .
An exciting psychological thriller adventure
