This third omnibus volume of Robert Carey stories contains books 7 and 8: A Chorus of Innocents, and A Clash of Spheres.
These books find Carey and Dodd back in the north after their southern sojourn and as usual having to contend with murders, treasonous plotting, feuding Scotsmen, reivers, horrendous toothache, and more.
These tightly plotted, fast moving books centre on a developing plot to kill King James of Scotland so that the Spanish may invade both Scotland and England and return the country to Catholicism. Lady Wriddington plays a much larger role in the stories here and she and Carey have some unguarded moments together. We are also introduced to Simon Anricks, Jewsish philosopher, toothdrawer, and English spy.
Carey also has Scotsmen out to claim the price on his head and the surnames are still carrying out their murderous blood feuds. When Carey outwits Dodds' mortal enemy, Wee Colin Elliott and his band of Grahams without killing a single one of them, Dodd becomes Carey's sworn enemy and agrees to betray him. Meanwhile unbeknownst to Dodd, someone is looking to kill him.
Add in the intrigues of Lord Spynie and the Scottish court and once again P.F. Chisholm has written two superb novels, and the second one ends with a chilling cliffhanger.
