The very title of this book strikes to me as gender biased, but the content is not always so
Masculinity is a human quality and feature which when shaped and used to our advantage will he beneficial not only to the individual but to the society as a whole is the point the author is trying to make throughout this book.
The author had provided numerous examples of situations throughout evolution when this specific trait has helped man to survive and grow
The cover art does complete justice to the content of this book 📖
According to the author, masculinity consists of the following characteristics, money providers, powerful, courageous, organizer, honest, gentle, etc
There are a few chapters in this book which are totally judgmental and gender biased which soured the experience of this book for me . Especially where it states that a women is always looking for a man with money and on getting one, over spends , i take this entire oart with a pinch or salt
The man in the wanderers and gathers age, had to hve all The traits of the masculine individuals, this was necessary for evolution and survive otherwise the existence of our species would hve been endangered
The way the quotes are used in this book is interesting and unique, loved it
It has a variety of perspective and it takes a while to digest them all, but all in all a good learning experience along with an informative one.
If you have read this one, do let me know your thoughts about it.
“In many ways, some women are no different than prostitutes. Even their outfits can look the same. For the groupies, they center on a standard come-fuck-me arrangement, featuring a Band-Aid-sized denim miniskirt studded with rhinestones and slung low enough to flash ass-cleavage…”
“If civilization had been left in female hands, we would still be living in grass huts.”
“With a sensual smile and a flick of her hair, she can latch onto the whole of his constitution and can then blind him even further by shaking boobs and ass.”
On a stroll through Canterbury in the Autumn of 2016, I chanced upon a curious sight. Next to The Old Weaver’s House on High Street, suspended over the river Stour, is an armchair. Held aloft in mid-air by a plank, floating over the currents. Curious, I turned to my friend, inquiring about the strange contraption. What it is called is a ‘Cucking Stool’, a device used to humiliate, torture and sometimes kill, scolds, gossipmongers, prostitutes and witches. The 14th Century poet William Langland, in his works, refers to the stool as a ‘women’s punishment’. Women on trial were made to sit on the armchair, arms strapped, as they were lowered into the river. In this way, it was made sure that wives don’t talk back to their husbands and witches don’t practice magic (if there ever was such a thing). For years, this was common practice. Whenever I’m told about the fear and confusion men feel with the rise of the feminist movement, I wish to take them there. To the bridge overlooking the Great Stour, to that monument to cruelty that still stands as a reminder to our future generations.
Masculinity is our Future by Tim Patten is a collection of poorly written essays masquerading as a well-researched, objective defence of masculinity. Having recently read Chimamanda’s brilliant essay We Should All Be Feminists, I was delighted to have come across a collection of essays on masculinity. I was bound to be disappointed. While Chimamanda’s short essay delights the reader with its compelling arguments and evocative prose, this collection of essays by Patten comes off as churlish pub banter, as apparent from the snippets provided at the beginning of this review.
There’s plenty wrong with the text (even if we ignore the glaring typographical errors in the introduction). Whether it’s the use of absurd language (“In many ways, some women are no different than prostitutes.”, p. 46), a complete ignorance of gender issues and sexuality (p. 24), an ignorance of scientific history (p. 20), the defence of Donald Trump’s p***y-grabbing (p. 46) or the unspeakable act of quoting a meme (pg. 66), this book has it all.
For a book that on the outset declares itself to be the result of ‘years of research’, there is not one credible source provided during the entire text. Someone forgot to inform the author of the age-old aphorism- ‘The plural of anecdote is not data’. Now, before someone points it out, Jordan Peterson’s YouTube videos do not count as a citeable source for objective data (p. 18).
All said and done, I’ll end my review by acknowledging what the author did get right (well, almost). I appreciate the author’s attempts to enumerate the best features of ‘man’-kind, I do. I see many of those likeable qualities reflected in the image of my own father. However, to draw a caricature of masculinity based solely on those qualities is an act as absurd as the hashtaggable feminist proverb – ‘All men are trash’.

Masculinity is our future by Tim Patten Book review - Diksha Datwani Recommended by @mysecret.bookshelf
It is a fairly ok book to read . I was unable to comprehend the purpose of writing this book. It seems more like a way to defend males for all the things they do or don't do and has a mysogynistic feeling to it. Many wrong things have been justified as being ok just because they are men. But at the same time, the author has defended and exaggerated other things like more male population being in risky and hard labour jobs or men having to provide for the family. One should know that the nature has made the biology of men different than women. Also it is the patriarchal system that has decided that men go outside to earn while women take care of the family. This has been going on since ancient times when men were hunters and had to provide for the tribe. He should take note that even women today are going out to work hard and earn money and contributing equally or rather more in the development of their families considering that a women has to take care of household chores too. Apart from that two sides of situations have been explained in detail. People can read this book just to understand male point of view about certain things. Personally I expected that it would focus more on the masculine trait of both the genders and how a balance of masculinity and femininity in both men and women would be a contributing factor to the upliftment of the society. Rating -3/5
Masculinity is our future by Tim Patten.. This book including some short essays through which the result came that the all the men with their masculinity changing the past, nowdays, men taking care of his wife, children, parents with his masculinity. But the book includes some errors like words and some essays are out of my mind. I didn't understand that.. But after all..if you could ignore that.. The book is providing some kinda a reality Recommendation by the secret bookshelf
Masculinity is our future by Tim Pattern recommend by My secrect Bookshelf was something different concept i have read in a long time.
The premise was to portray a perspective of men which was largely ignored in the age of feminism. Now i considered myself a feminist who strongly support equality of both sexes. I highly distaste the idea that shows the one gender is higher than the other.
The book shows the male exploitation or discrimination. And soly focus on the men perspective. It doesn't try to equalize the gender gap but tries to show the "mens side" of the world.
Yes i agree men get abused too. But still i have got the nag that the book should have focused on both side with a emphasize and focus point on what it did.
Anyway i give it a 3 start for it really argues in a great way and opens up for debates.
Book: Masculinity is our future. Author: Tim Patten Recommended by My Secret Bookshelf A book with a title which is sure to raise many eyebrows, the author here tries to present a counter to rising feminism. His version emphasises and tries to prove the male sex to be of a stronger variety.Though his argument becomes hard to agree most of the times, yet he shares certain important anecdotes on how males are victimized in cases of divorce and false harrasment accusations which makes it an interesting read at times. The author explores various angles of male personality and sex specific characters of males and females which often take the form of villifying women, thus highlighting a patriarchal mindset. In today's time of gender fluidityand blurred boundaries, such black and white comparisons have perhaps become obsolete and ill-placed. Nevertheless it's quite evident from the author's writing that he has put in a lot of research work for this book, which is truly commendable. The way he describes masculine traits such as libido and it's connection with muscular superiority provides certain new insights. Further the way he highlights the problems of males with regard to social exclusion and expression of emotion deserves praise. Though I personally couldn't agree with most of the viewpoints presented by the author, i would suggest to give this book a read to get a whole new perspective on gender discrimination.
Thank you, Tom Patten. You have given me the book I need to feel normal again, I am retired and live with my wife and her sister. We have clashes, but nothing, in my head, is resolved. This book tells me why. For example: One trait of men: “Rambunctious, warriors of violence: From experts of raising boys, they identify how they are often mischief-makers and troublemakers, and are frequently hyperactive from an early age, racing around rooms at a breathless pace. On the playground and throughout their lives, they are constantly interacting with and testing others around them, enabling them to understand and develop their inherent masculinity. Warriors of violence: In general, older masculine types are rambunctious, tough-skinned and jokesters whose behaviors form a type of masculinity with shoulders pulled back and chin high that protects our civilization in wars and from crime. It is time to respect and take care of our warriors.” —from the book “Masculinity is our Future” by Tom Patten
And:
Men and women who work together might not like it, but life has always been a competition where the toughest and most capable survive. In the workplace, the same applies: we are competing against coworkers to ensure we can do whatever is necessary to win or even stay in the race. With that in mind, even if your rival is a woman, it’s not time for a man to let up. You should put your head down and do the best for yourself, your career and your firm.
These sparkling clear sentences, used in a systematic approach, make this vehicle an absolute must for us guys to read, and to survive this cultural period where men are viewed as stupid and unnecessary. He bases masculinity on childhood exposure, and contrasts, in non-condescension, how women reach the same point.
My biggest shock was the workplace. I started corporate work in 1973. Then, it was male-dominated. Since the 90s, women have filtered into the workplace, not only as peers, but also as bosses. And there’s the rub: the differences are a call to male warfare, but to keep a job, I had to conform. And I’m glad I did: women have changed the stodgy workplace into a family-oriented and more understanding arena. Besides those gargantuan “women who want to stomp on men”, the influence of the feminine has, to me, decorated the work dungeon with common sense, better goals, and an environment of open communication.
All this, and more, are discussed in this unique work. I really feel women should read this as well, to see our differences (and Vivla them!) I have learned so much from this book, I cannot cite nor praise enough. No spoilers here. Read it!
Masculinity Is Our Future, by Tim Patten, was a pleasant surprise. I expected it to be degrading to women and feminists everywhere. This was not the case at all. The book simply talks about men being proud of their masculinity and embracing it in a world has been oppressing men for years now. Patten talks about men being comfortable with sensitivity as well as what being a man entails. The breadwinner, tough guy, role model, and much more. He talks about men taking back the responsibility of being the father, taking care of his wife and kids, and making sure that his family has food in their belly and a roof over their heads. It's encouraging how Patten works to empower men in a society that is predominantly against them. It's inspiring, even for someone who isn't part of the intended audience. Definitely a must read for everyone!
Masculinity is our future: Author: Tim Patten Edition: Kindle Don’t we have many notions and stereotypes for gender? Haven’t we all faced gender discrimination? We grow up with so many gender-based sentences like ‘Boys don’t cry’, ‘stop crying like a girl’, ‘and don’t behave like a boy’. All of us have defined our personality based on our upbringing. This book helps us to have a different perspective on masculinity. Some of us can regard this book as a self-help book. There is a different concept mentioned here about the way men and fathers are treated. The writer thinks and expresses that the word masculinity changes as per the era and generation. The personalities of all the genders should be accepted and embraced. This book tries to evade the concept of superior/inferior and authority debates. The book helps us to create a different image of masculinity for the younger generation. This is a quick and impactful read. Though the title has Masculinity in it, this book hails the equalist theory.
