Tells how to follow the principles taught in God's word to establish a Christian home, where the Christian life is lived daily. For the author, it wasn't enough to lead a church and write 30 books and booklets - Pastor Clarence Sexton also led the creation of a major college. This remarkable man was a driving force behind the opening of Crown Christian College of Powell, TN, of which he is president and which now teaches more than 900 students from every state and several countries. Here, Pastor Sexton tells how to follow the principles taught in God's word to establish a Christian home, where the Christian life is lived daily.
The truths espoused are good, but the writing feels lacking and fragmented. The anecdotes are so short, often reading like a Facebook “boomer” meme, they don’t add much to the message being conveyed.
At times statements are made and not subsequently backed up: “the Bible teaches the week begins on Sundays.” Yet the passage supporting that was not provided. I like the idea, and even if the justification was that church in our culture is Sunday and we should begin, not end the week with God and adjust our mindset thusly, it would be a good point. Instead, it felt like information was lacking.
Other places begin potentially relevant personal stories without fleshing them out. One towards the end was “if you knew more about my childhood you’d wonder how it was happy” (paraphrasing), then wraps up the entire idea with “but it was.” The implication is that it was due to the subsequent reasons listed in the chapter, but offers no additional value to the book as it is written.
The end of the chapter homeworks were the best part, in my opinion. They succinctly explained the points of the previous chapter. The entire book may have been more comfortable to read if it was not present as a book at all - but as a list of truths with some sub-points supporting the idea concisely.
Again, the truths are Truth. The ideas beneficial. The take always many. It was getting these out that felt like jumping from fragment to fragment. I’m going to apply this book to my home, so it’s objective was met. However, I think it would be more beneficial to show my husband the main ideas than spend the time reading the whole book.
Dr. Sexton has been my pastor for couple of years now. I read The Christian Home in my Marriage & Family class. Definitely recommend people of all ages.
