In the tradition of ORIGIN, Marvel reveals the shocking secret history of Captain America! In 1940 there was a man who had many of the same qualities as Steve Rogers - save for one, the color of his skin - and TRUTH is his story!
First in a 7-part series on the secret origins of Capain America; the story follows the story of Black Americans in the 1930s and 40s as the Depression gives way to World War II. Several Black men enlist in the army to serve the country that mistreats them, including Isaiah Bradley, who leaves behind his pregnant wife when his country calls . . .
So glad this graphic novel is getting attention again!
Thank you, Falcon and the Winter Soldier on Disney + for bringing attention to this brilliant reimagining of the origins of the "super soldier serum" and the eventual birth of (not the first!) Captain America. A necessary look at the ugly side of American history, although fictional, nonetheless rings true for the people of color who helped build this country, fought and bled for it, but weren't allowed the same freedoms and privileges of others.
Double V. Black men went off to World War II in support roles and came back heroes, only to have to fight again to be recognized as men. But what if one was touched by the gods? Received the transformation that made Steve Rodgers the Captain? How does that play out?
Ever since The Falcon and The Winter Soldier series premiered, I've become very interested in Isaiah Bradley's back story. I'm looking forward to reading even more about him.
A little disjointed as you learn who these new characters are, but powerful to see these strong black characters stand up for what they believe in, in 1940's America.
