A short and less than necessary prequel to Lucky Universe.

We are introduced to Lee “LUCKY” Savage in his early days of being a marine. This is after he has failed to stay in school and after his time in prison.

We are given plenty of examples of his disrespect for authority and his impulsive choices.

He and his neuro-A.I. are just getting to know each other when the awesome aliens appear.

Most of what is started here will be explained in Lucky Universe … but be prepared—-the author has a lot of violence and “cliffhangers “ in store for readers.

This short prequel to the Lucky's Marines series is action-packed and full of excitement. Based on this prequel the series should be awesome! Looking forward to reading the first book in this series!

A space marines short novel prequel? Chapter 1, protagonist gets beat up by his sister. Chapter 2, mouths off to superiors while nano-bots fix him in minutes. Chapter 3 screws up launch. I gave up on the dumb character and jumped to the end to find his sister dies. Book abandoned with prejudice.

I’ve purchased and read all three of Lucky’s stories and also the prequel “Lucky’s Shot” and even started reading the “classified subject Lee Savage” redacted copy, for government eyes 👀 only.
I’m not even sure how I got it and I look forward to reading through it, even with all the government’s blacked out sentences.
Back to the point.
Lucky’s Universe, as well as the rest of this series, is just what military science fiction is supposed to be. Hard core brutality towards any and all evil alien 👽 entities.
This series can be wrapped up with one word, a word that all sci-fi lovers and nerds will recognize as the single most important word when it comes to action sci-fi. The word that describes Lucky’s universe is “FUN”!
This entire series is just plain fun to read.
Yes it’s bloody, brutal and definitely a hard “R” rating, but even so it was a blast to read. Just plain FUN!
Do yourself a favor if you love sci-fi with nonstop action, great character depth and environments that are off the charts, read this series!
They’re also extremely inexpensive thanks to the author, who obviously cares more about the fans and readers then himself.
Thank you Joshua!

This isn't really a book, but rather a teaser short story packaged with the first five chapters of the full-length novel.

The prequel focuses on the disastrous mission hinted at in the first book, and does a good job of setting a gritty tone sprinkled with gallows humor. Lucky is a Frontier Marine whose callsign is somewhat ironic, as he's anything but. Lucky's personality really comes through here: he's self-deprecating and self-destructive at times, with an intolerance for stupid orders that often manifests as insubordination. A perfect soldier he ain't, and I liked that.

I wish I'd known going in that "Lucky Shot" is only the first half of the sample, as it made the ending seem too abrupt. I also would've liked to know more about Lucky's sister;
after Lucky, she was my favorite character.

As a hook to get you to read the series, it works. I'll definitely be checking out Lucky Universe.

An introductory prequel to Lucky Savage's universe.

This story begins by describing for us a brief but horrific beatdown to introduce the concept of augmented bodies and quick recovery from near-fatal wounds. The protagonist is quickly thrust into a space battle in which he and his compatriots are beaten just as badly. If blood and gore with near constant action are what you enjoy this short story is for you. It's just a bit too much for my tastes.

The author provided a free copy of the tale and this is my honest opinion.

For Lee 'Lucky' Savage is life has been nothing but hell: living under a dominating empire to committing crimes that landed him a prison colony that should have killed him. It didn't and now somehow he's become an enhanced Marine... and Lucky is still dangerously cocky as ever; even after a beat down from his sister. But his life is about to become shattered as he and his fellow Marines discover a deadly unknown enemy. A beautiful and brilliant beginning to the Lucky Universe, highly recommended.

**** SPOILER ALERT ****
James does a fine job of world building in a very little space.
The author did a great job at getting me hungry for more about Lucky. I liked "Lucky Shot" so much that I went out and bought the whole series. Be aware that there will be more reviews from me on this series.
I highly recommend this story, and series.

In the interest of transparency: I was given a copy of this book.
This is my own, honest opinion.

Lucky Shot is a short prequel set in the Lucky's Marines series. This can be read as a standalone. It does have some mild spoilers for the series. This is the battle that is mentioned in the first book of the series. It sets the tone and introduces you to the main character Lucky.

The protagonist is an inexperienced, cocky, rebellious jerk of an augmented space Marine with zero redeeming qualities. If I had read this prequel before reading Lucky Universe (Book 1), I would have abandoned the series. The writing was excellent, but who wants to hate the hero?

3.5*. I found just enough in this prequel to tempt me to start on book 1 in this series.

This is a prequel that sets the reader up for Book 1. Just remember that there is a spoiler halfway through the book which is the intro to Book 1. The second half of Lucky Shot is the first part of Lucky Universe which is Book 1 of Lucky's Marines so if you don't want any spoilers DO NOT READ THE SECOND HALF or just skip it when you read Lucky Universe as you will want to continue the Saga of Lucky Lee Savage.
