To know PAMELA CRANE, you first need to know her husband. He sleeps with one eye open. He checks the knife block to make sure none are missing. Why? It could be because they have four kids and a farm full of mischievous animals. Or it could be because she writes murder mysteries, and about the occasional woman who has lost her marbles (not based on her real-life psyche, she swears!) Don't worry—her husband is safe...for now. Her books range from witty whodunnits to psychological suspense and even humorous women’s fiction thrown in for good measure. She’s a USA TODAY bestselling author of over a dozen novels (who’s counting?), but her biggest accomplishment is keeping her zoo of animals alive…and her husband in check. THE ART OF FEAR (The Little Things That Kill Series Book 1) by Pamela Crane is the author of the best-selling psychological thriller "The Admirer’s Secret," Amazon top 20 short story "A Fatal Affair," and her latest releases "A Secondhand Life" and "A Secondhand Lie." Having read “A Secondhand Lie” and “A Secondhand Life” from the killer thriller series, and loving them, I was anxious to sample more from this author. All I can say is WOW…this author ticks all the boxes for me. I loved The Art of Fear.

This is a dark psychological thriller based on two women coming to terms with the horror they faced as children. It highlights the elements of survival, strength and human persistence to come to terms with the cards they had been dealt and to rise above it to find friendship and love.

The subject matter touches on elements of mental illness, suicide, sex trafficking, child abuse and death. Not an easy read but one that I commend the author on researching and highlighting these issues. I must say at the beginning I was a little bit confused as to where this novel was going, but it soon became clear, once I started to follow the rhythm of the characters.

“A life no girl should endure. A father no daughter could love. A twist no one would predict. “

This is a chilling tale of small-town secrets and murder.

“Ari Wilburn’s life ended long ago—the day she watched her little sister die in a tragic accident and did nothing to stop it. Crippled with self-blame and resented by her parents, she stumbles through life … and onto an unexpected clue that casts doubt on whether the death was accidental. “

Ari joins a suicide support group where she meets Tina, a sex-enslaved escapee who finds her long-lost father dead. The police rule it suicide…Tina believed he was murdered. There begins the start of a bond between these women based on their losses. They had both witnessed the death of a loved one., up close and personal. They shared their past and their darkest secrets. But Tina had overcome her dark past and moved on with her life…but Ari didn’t feel the same.

Now Ari and Tina start to investigate and begin playing a dangerous game with a killer. There is a serial killer on the loose! So many lies and secrets!

Ari must face her demons and the killer behind them … or lose everything she loves.

Many thanks to the Pamela Crane and Booklover Catlady Publicity for the ARC. I highly recommend this well written novel with its engaging characters and look forward to following this series.

Ari Wilburn is still feeling like a murderer. Her little sister died by a hit and run driver ...and her parents blamed Ari for her sister's death. This one event has colored her entire life.

She starts a suicide support group .. because she herself has tried to kill herself. She is not the only one by the number of people who show up. Telling her story takes everything she has.

At this group, Ari meets Tina, a sex-enslaved escapee who suspects foul play in her father’s death. Law enforcement is calling Tina's dad a suicide ... but Tina just doesn't believe it. She's the one who found his body, and she insists that it just didn't look 'right'.

Ari wants to help her and she tries, but there are lies upon lies, and secrets that would like to stay hidden in the shadows. And then she comes across something that makes her think her own sister's accident was not an accident.

Ari and Tina start investigating on their own .... and they may find much more than they bargained for.

This inspiration for this book comes from a true story. The author has done her research and written a dark, disturbing tale of mental illness, sex trafficking, child abuse, death, suicide. Along this journey be prepared for a serial killer, a child molester, and murderers. But it's also a story of two women trying to deal with their childhood horrors. And it is definitely a story of love and friendship.

There are surprising twists and turns .. and an ending no one can see coming. Be prepared for a cliff hanger.

Many thanks to the author / Booklover Catlady Publicity for the advanced digital copy. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

Dark subject matter, a little confusing at the beginning but ultimately a hugely enjoyable tale.

Ari Wilburn is our main protagonist. A damaged soul with little to live for, as a child she watched as her sister was killed by a hit and run driver while they were playing together. Blamed for the death of her sister by her parents she is sent into care after her mother says that she saw her push her sister in front of the car.
Fastforward to present day and she is floating through life with little or no purpose and nothing but self loathing. Trying to help herself she sets up a suicide support group where she befriends a girl called Tina. Another with a tragic life, she was sold as a child by her father to be a sex slave and was held captive most of her life until she escaped a couple of years previously.
When Tina's father is found dead by apparent suicide, she is convinced that he was murdered and asks Ari to help her look into it. Feeling a bond with Tina and their shared tragic pasts, Ari agrees and they set out to find what happened to Tina's father. This awakens Aris interest in finding out what exactly happened on the day her own sister died and she starts to look for information and clues.
When bodies start appearing(can't go into detail because of spoilers) it's clear there is a serial killer on the loose with a definite agenda. Can the two woman uncover who it is before they themselves both potentially become victims?

This starts off quite confusing with some flashbacks from the off and a couple of stories running alongside each other and I really didn't know what the book was going to be about or where it was going(I didn't read the synopsis before reading). Once it got going and found its rhythm it was immensely enjoyable and just so readable.

The story is a pretty grim one but is very well told. I really like this writers style. The main character Ari is great. Instantly appealing, a strong straight talking woman, it was just so easy to warm to her.
The story does rely on her being a well written and interesting character and on that front the author delivers in spades. There's a brashness to her that is refreshing and raised a smile with me on more than one or two occasions.

The writing style is just extremely readable. I didn't notice the time or the pages go as I worked my way through the book. Also some of the descriptive passages of the book ar fantastic. Nearly poetic with their vividness and use of words.

This is the first in a series that will feature Ari and I'm delighted ther will be more instalments. I know when I pick up the next one I will instantly remember Ari and her world.

It's a cracking read. Probably four and a half stars from me rather than four. I'd thoroughly recommend it.

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Sooooo ..... after being locked out of my Kindle app I've decided to have a bit of a clean up in my various "Books Read" lists. First cabs off the rank are my DNF pile. If I DNF'd it and have absolutely NO intention of reading it again, I'm changing my rating to 1 🌟 and deleting it off my Kindle. Life is too short at my age for crappy books!!

Original Review:

This is a 2.5 star read.

This is also a DNF at 30% for me. It was well written, intriguing and you just knew it was going to bring about a clusterfuck of emotions ........ and that was the problem for this old chick's psyche. I'm sorry ...... but once I hit the part where a 6yo was sold into sex trafficking by her parents ..... that would be a nooooo, nope, nyet, neine, non ....... close up the shop and go home.

Setting: USA and Mexico; modern day.

Ari Wilburn has always been the scapegoat for her younger sister's death - blamed by her parents and sent to live in children's homes by the authorities, when she was often tormented with suicidal thoughts. Now an adult, Ari tries to make amends and to help people in similar situations by setting up a support group for those contemplating suicide and for families of victims.

During these meetings, she meets Tina who was sex-trafficked at a young age by her father but, having reconnected with him, has now discovered him murdered - but the police claim that it is suicide. Ari tries to help Tina in her contact with the police, trying to persuade them that it is in fact murder. But as Ari continues to help Tina investigate the circumstances of her father's death, more of Tina's secrets are revealed and the sex traffickers she escaped from are still looking for her, putting both Tina and Ari in mortal danger....

This was an uncomfortable read at times, involving as one of its main themes child sex trafficking, but it was also a bit confusing at times. There was certainly a constant threat level for the main characters and a twisting storyline where it was hard to determine who the culprit was - this maintained my interest in the story and I am certainly looking forward to the next in the series, which should evolve naturally from the end of this one - 8.5/10.

I wanted to share with readers a little about the inspiration for this book.

It all started with a young girl. A sweetly innocent face. But her eyes told me another story. This little girl had been sold by her parents to make ends meet, but they never knew where she went or if they'd ever see her again. Perhaps they didn't care.

During my time in Thailand I had heard many stories about this happening, but the most shocking thing about this girl's story is that this happened in America, the land of the free and brave. But she was not free, though she was certainly brave. She eventually had a happy ending when a neighbor noticed bruises one day beneath her outgrown, raggedy clothes, and when social services got involved, the details of her plight unraveled and she was rescued. Though her scars will forever bind her.

Her story led me into an endless array of emotions, and finally I decided to pour those feelings onto the page. It's partly that little girl's story, but mostly the story of one woman's fierce hunger for justice, for salvation from the evil that lurks out there, for embracing who she is meant to be, flaws and all.

I hope my readers enjoy the book and quench their thirst for a thrilling tale while connecting with characters I put a lot of heart into.

The Art of Fear is told in chapters that swap between a couple of the characters but mainly focus on Ari and the days counting down to her death. I found it weird that the chapters tell the reader how many days were left until Ari’s death. Something totally new on me and didn’t know quite what to make of it at first. The further into the story I got though and the more I got to know Ari, I really got to like her and I knew without a doubt I didn’t want her to die.

Ari has a really interesting past. Growing up with the burden of her sisters death has left Ari damaged. I wanted to reach out to her quite a lot through out the novel. I loved her relationship with Tristan and was glad she had someone like him on her side. I think meeting Tina gives Ari a purpose in life which was great apart from it leading into dangerous territory.

The Art Of Fear is a dark and gripping read. Steeped with lies and secrets that build up to to a satisfying end, this is a definite must read for thriller fans.

My thanks to TAsT Publicity for an advanced readers copy of this book. All opinions are my own and not biased in anyway.

Well, talk about reeling a reader in! Barely a few pages in and Pamela Crane had me hook, line and sinker!

Ari Wilburn hasn’t had an easy life. At a young age, she watched as her sister died in an accident. Blaming herself and being resented by her parents, she struggles to live her life and joins a suicide support group. Here she meets Tina, who used to be a sex slave. Tina’s father just died. The police claim it was suicide but Tina isn’t convinced. Together, these two women will dig deep and try to figure out the truth about their pasts.

This is one dark and disturbing read. From child trafficking to suicide, it’s at times rather uncomfortable to read. Both Ari’s and Tina’s parents have made some incredibly horrible decisions in the past that have influenced their children’s lives and not in a good way! If you sometimes get the feeling that some people should never had had children, here’s the proof. I don’t always find it easy to connect to characters who are clearly miserable but in this case, I was rooting for them all the way and was every bit as desperate as they were to find the truth and maybe some justice.

I felt the the ending left me hanging and slightly disappointed. Until I realised there’s a sequel coming. I should really pay attention to these things. So in that respect, the end of this part of the story was brilliantly done as the cliffhanger will truly leave you wanting and needing more! Apologies if this review is a tad vague but I really don’t want to give anything away. There are so many connections and secrets and twists. You should just get your own copy and learn about the art of fear yourself.

WOW! I am speechless.

WARNING: Human trafficking and all the ugliness that goes with it.

Luckily for you, I’m a master of The Art Of Fear

The Art Of Fear has a morbid start and I love that Pamela Crane makes dishing out the crazy look so easy. She paints vivid pictures with her words. They flow at a pace that makes it impossible for me to stop. I have an urgent need to know…

I am only at 27%, but the villain is terrifying, and what’s more, I know there are real people like the villain walking among us. Next time you’re out, look around you…

Ari and Tina are complicated characters, as are those that surround them. Ari and Tina are suspicious, guarded, wanting answers and wanting something to give them a reason to go on. I am curious about Tristan and have my fingers crossed that he won’t be a bad guy. Ari deserves to have something good in her life. Children, betrayed by those who were supposed to love and protect them. I urge you to discover them for yourself.

There is so much going on, my head spins, I am confused. I found myself reading until my eyes crossed, because I had to know. White knuckled, heart pounding, emotions running riot. Intense, edge of your seat suspense. Great job, Pamela, keeping me guessing until the end. When I was done, I felt like I’d been ‘put through the wringer’, as my mother used to say…and I WANT MORE!

"If you go poking around in shadows, you'll find darkness."

Ari was ten years old when she was held responsible for her little sister's death. Tina (Sophia) was sold into sex slavery by her parents when she was 6. These two young women meet at a suicide support group, bond, and start looking for answers to explain their miserable lives. Although complete amateurs at the investigation business, they somehow find out more than expected and track down the different parties as it seems that there is a connection between events that happened over fourteen years ago.

Despite the need to completely suspend my disbelief in the action and plot, and never mind that the characters were flat and stereotypical, I moved through this rapidly. I really didn't like any of the characters in the book and the coincidences were often just too extreme. Ari and Tina are supposed to be two tough chicks who'd survived really hard times (and yeah, I am sure the sex slavery was total horror and sometimes I can't even stand to think about it much less read about it), but I just couldn't buy into Ari's personality. The romance that blossomed with Tristan was...well, most know how I feel about romance in these thrillers...but how convenient that his job proves so HELPFUL to Ari right?
No spoilers, but the ending shows that Ari is moving forward into a new direction -- no longer a retail sales clerk after her stellar investigating techniques -- finding out stuff that defied all the efforts of previous law enforcement types.

Although this was OK, I don't know that I'd invest the time in another of this series. I didn't like the interaction between the characters, the dialogue or the need to be so incredulous at outcomes.

Thank you to NetGalley and Tabella House for the e-book ARC to read and review.

What a great book I really enjoyed it.

Ari had a terrible childhood her sister was killed by an hit and run and she carried the guilt of it for years.
Ari starts a support group where she meets Tina who also had a terrible childhood. Tina is trying to come to terms with the death of her father which they said was a suicide but she doesn't think this is right.
This book is full of suspense and mystery it also has some dark matter in it .....I didn't guess the ending a very clever and intriguing book....
There is also a little bit of romance in it.....
Read it you will want more....
This is my honest review of the book and so glad i was gifted a copy to read....

Thank you to Tabella House and Net Galley for a free copy of this book in trade for an honest review.

This is an enjoyable read, something that you could read on a rainy day with a cup of coffee. I will classified this as a psychological thriller, not just a crime and mystery genre. It’s an exciting read with the words flowing with like poetry. The story is told from each character point of view. It makes the story interesting to read since each character had their own story and background. From the beginning we were introduced about the theme of the book: death.

EXCERPT:
Death is a beautiful thing, if you think about it. Elegant, even. That moment when every touch, every taste, every teardrop electrifies each cell. Imagine it—delicate crimson droplets and bruised hues of purple and yellow all creating a palette of color on an endless hide canvas. Then there’s the sweet smell of sweat as panic sets in and the pungent coppery tang that accompanies that first slice of flesh. The soothing sound of a blade working its way through a crackle of skin, then sinking dully through fatty tissue, at last finding its resting place in the slosh of blood.
Mere minutes after the penetration is the calming realization that the end is near. A peaceful cocktail of reflection and fear.
Then serenity.

The story has some twist around the corner. Every time something is come to light, then things change. The truth is revealed little by little. Everybody has a secret and I was left on the edge of my seat trying to figure out who is the killer. The killing feels intimate. But the events that leads to the killing that feels a bit harsh.

There’s also some reference to the human trafficking problem. Parents who sell their children for lies and a bunch of cash. This is a sad truth that our world is facing right now. Tina is pictured as the victim of human trafficking and somehow her past is tied to Ari Wilburn. The way the story of each character entwined between each other feels naturally possible, although there are times it’s quite far-fetched, but in general it’s possible.

Characters are a mixture between strong and weak. Weak in the meaning of attitude, unwilling to fight, to just give up on the situation. Tina and her brother fall into this category. Ari Wilburn on the other hand as the main character has a strong attitude. Although she falls into the temptation of suicide, but it’s her guilt that drives her to do it. The parents in this story come out quite bad: selfish, self centered, willing to sacrifice their children for their own purpose. It’s a knock on the door, a self reminder to each parent who read this story: don’t make your children pay for what you’ve done. Don’t use them as tool to satisfy your needs.

I like the ending where Ari Wilburn story will continue in the next series. I will be expecting to read another book from this series. The first chapters by the end of the book look promising.

Recommend for those who love psychological thriller, a fast paced read with surprises along the way and a bitter story of family love.

This book really addresses how small children are affected, when their parents do the unthinkable. This book starts off with a real hook. Ari Wilburn feels like she is responsible for the death of her little sister, when a car suddenly jumps the curb and kills her sister, Carli. Her mother accused her of the death of her sister and basically sends her off to a Juvenile Group Home. Her mother and father leaves her there and she doesn't see her mother for many years. Needless to say Ari decides to try to commit suicide, but fails to complete it. With her background, Ari decides to start a group for individuals who have tried to commit suicide or who have lost a loved one to suicide. Ari meets a young girl, Tina in her group and befriends her. Little did Ari know but Tina, at the age of 10 years old, was sold into sex trafficking by her own father. Seems as if both young women have had a horrific life at the hands of their parents. When murders start to evolve around Tina, Ari becomes very protective of her new friend. Ari and her new "undercover cop" boyfriend, Tristan, set off to try to find out who is causing these murders and how Tina can finally be freed from her "pimp," George Barren. This book had a very good plot and kept the reader completely mystified throughout the book. The story encapsulated how difficult life can be and how horrific sex trafficking can be on many different levels. The characters are very realistic and the reader can become very close to them. Will Ari find out who really killed her little sister? Will Tina finally get away from her pimp? Will her pimp ever be held accountable for what he has done? Will Ari and Tristan ever find out who the murderer is? I am looking forward to reading the next book by this author!! What an intriguing story!! I have received a complimentary copy of this book I will give my honest opinion on my review.

First of all, let me just say that Pamela Crane is a talented writer. She’s taken a very dark subject and delivered her story without the use of overly sentimental tactics, which she could have easily resorted to.

The story unfolds through multiple perspectives, each taking you down a different rabbit hole, deceiving you into thinking you have it all figured out. I thought I did, only to realize at the end that I had been sent down the wrong path. The story is dark, but Pamela Crane has a way of making the subject matter bearable where it could put some readers off. You won’t find graphic descriptions of what is undeniably a deplorable reality in the underbelly of society.

Ari Wilburn has had a difficult life. Most of us think of our parents as the people we can unequivocally trust in this world. But Ari’s experience was very different. As was Tina Alvarez’s—the young woman she meets in her suicide support group who just might have more in common with her than she thinks.

While initially I did find certain scenarios unrealistic—a very young amateur sleuth with very convenient access to resources—I could overlook this because the protagonist was not your average young woman. Ari is a fighter who won’t be deterred.

Thank you to TBC for providing me with an ARC for review. A solid mystery that will leave you guessing till the very end.

An excellent start to what I expect to be a really good series.

Well plotted story, well paced and with some great characters, I particularly liked that the main female lead character was strong and intelligent despite her appalling childhood. The author kept me guessing about the identity of the perpetrator and there were some clever twists and although some of the story line is very dark, the subject of abuse and child trafficking was well handled and doesn't go into the gory details. I was a little sceptical of the strength and depths of the friendships formed in such a short space of time but soon got over this and was carried away by the story.

Despite the subject matter, this is a story of resilience and a page-turner at that!

I didn't know if to give it a two or three stars. So I could go for 2.5.
Although dealing with serious issues, the writer managed to lighten the weight of those topics with the main character sense of humour. The story is not bad but it's definitely NOT what I was expecting with a title like "The Art Of Fear". Sometimes it felt like reading a comedy book and I didn't know if the whole plot could be taken seriously. Unfortunately, I found it somehow childish and predictable, a bit like being back in high school....and also I'm still waiting for the twist (hence why I've read it until the end).

This was a good series starter about a suicide support group started by Ari, that turned out to be so much more for her. She decides to help ppl and let them help her after years of issue isolation.
I found this to be endearing and to be a quick read with a conscience. It didn’t seem like a mystery or true crime at first; I thought from the title I was about to read a horror book, but this was a good crime thriller and mystery.

"The art of fear" is a mind game story. It's a story that puts you in many roles ... Roles to whom it complicates and you do not know who is who and who has done what.
It could be a small diamond ... but it was not.

Intelligent capital-character distribution among the killer who does not know who he is ... From the first chapter you start to believe that you have found him until the next one leads you to new (incorrect) conclusions.

Pedophilia, child trafficking, wrong choices, guilt, insecurity, fear, tolerance are the messages the writer tries to get through.

It could be a diamond ... but it was not ...
It was not perhaps because from the waist and then it is like getting tired and while everything goes well from some point and then the chapters?!, Their analysis ?! the characters ?! they were hurriedly, impatiently and casually (especially who is the killer) ...

Authors must be a bit like buses; you wait for ages and then two come along at once. Well, not really, it just so happens that having not read anything by Pamela Crane before, I'm listening to A Secondhand Life and reading The Art of Fear at the same time! I have to say, "WOW"!!! This book was un-put-down-able. I loved it. You start off by hating Ari, deciding she must be an evil murderer and by the end.....well, no spoilers here!! The characterisation is superb, Sophia/Tina, Killian - (love that name), Rosalita, Tristan, every one reels you in and when you think you've got the measure of them, they turn around and do something you would never have dreamt of in a million years. I had absolutely no clue who the villain was, and yet when it was revealed it was like, "Ah, of course". Another brilliant book by a brilliant writer. Ms Crane, I commend you. I will be reading everything you write, (notes to the milkman, shopping lists). This is a huge, great big, STONKIN' 5 stars from me. YOU MUST READ THIS BOOK!

I really didn't care for this one. It started out okay but by halfway, I was ready to give up. I read all the great reviews and decided to continue. I really wish I didn't. The only reason I did was to find out who was the villain and why they did what they did. Once I found out, I was so disappointed. The characters were unbelievable as well. At one point they are acting like older adults, then they act like like children. None of them were very likeable either. The story went along out of convenience and not by credibility. There is nothing really positive I can say about the book except for the beginning. It started out good and I saw a good story there but it did not continue.

A psychological dark thriller at its best that will keep you on the edge of your seat and causes you to become so entangled up in it all and will definitely make you not want to put it down till its finished. A story so intriguing and filled with so many twists and turns while dealing with strong issues as sex trafficking, child abuse, mental illness, death, and suicide. A story where you will encounter a serial killer, a child molester, and murderers. A story where two girls meet and try to rise above what life has dealt them. A story full of lies and deceit but also friendship and love. A story you don't want to miss reading! Well done, Pamela Crane!

Well that was a bit different. Ari has had a shit life from age 12 or so when her sister was killed. Her parents blamed her and she ended up in juvie where she learnt some hard lessons. Now, a bit messed up up but trying to make a better life for herself, she is learning to open herself a bit to others.

She meets Tina at a suicide self help group and feels somehow drawn to her. Tina's life has been even more shit and Ari feels compelled to help and protect her. She also meets, and is attracted to, Tristan. But Tristan is not very open about what he does for a living.

Tina's father has been murdered. She feels no sorrow since he sold her into sexual slavery as a child, but nevertheless she doesn't believe he killed himself as the police suggest. Ari vows to help Tina uncover the truth about her father's death.

From there the journey becomes more convoluted and dangerous. Tina's brother is attacked, her former pimp has threatened her and, in the process of resolving Tina's father's murder Ari decides she needs to get to the bottom of her own sister's death. What she uncovers is way more than she bargained for and raises serious questions about her parent's role in Carli's (the sister's) death.

It wasn't strictly speaking a thriller but was entertaining nonetheless. Reading at times a bit gothic noir and at other times a bit 'coming of age' and 'sisters doing it for themselves' it drew me in and had me rooting for these damaged young women to prevail against all odds.

A life no girl should endure. A father no daughter could love. A twist no one would predict.

From award-winning author Pamela Crane comes a terrifying tale of small-town secrets and murder.

Ari Wilburn’s life ended long ago—the day she watched her little sister die in a tragic accident and did nothing to stop it. Crippled with self-blame and resented by her parents, she stumbles through life … and onto an unexpected clue that casts doubt on whether the death was accidental.

Now a psychological wreck, Ari joins a suicide support group where she meets Tina, a sex-enslaved escapee who finds her long-lost father dead. Suicide, police ruled it. But Tina suspects foul play. As a bond develops between the women in their shared loss, they’re dragged into playing a dangerous game with a killer.

Faced with a murderous wake-up call and two possibly linked deaths, Ari’s investigation puts her next on the killer’s list. But she’s never been one to back down from a fight.

Needing closure, Ari must face her demons and the killer behind them … or lose everything she loves.

I really enjoyed this book. Definitely some twists and turns. I had no idea who actually ‘dunnit’; so it was a major surprise for me.4*

"Everybody avoided the words the day your sister died, as if saying them aloud brought the curse upon themselves. Those words were the Lord Voldemort of my life."
