What if friendship cost you everything?

Stranded in Hawaii after the death of her mother, sixteen-year-old Olive Galloway is desperate to escape. She has to get back to Boston before her dad loses all common sense and sells the family house. But plane tickets cost money—something Olive gravely lacks.

With the help of Brander, the fussy youth group worship leader, and Jazz, a mysterious girl with a passion for all things Hawaiian, Olive lands a summer job at the Shave Ice Shack and launches a scheme to buy a plane ticket home before the end of the summer.

But when Jazz reveals a painful secret, Olive’s plans are challenged. Jazz needs money. A lot of it. Olive and Brander are determined to help their friend but, when their fundraising efforts are thwarted, Olive is caught in the middle. To help Jazz means giving up her ticket home. Well, color me tickled pink, y’all. I just read a great Contemporary YA. :)
This genre is sorely lacking new releases, so when I first heard about this new one coming out, I definitely wanted to know more.
Y’all know I’m a tough judge on books, right? Very rarely do I ever say that I’m impressed and when I do, I mean it.
Between the well-written first-person point-of-view, the true emotions felt by the main character, and all the faith content: I’m impressed. I’m really impressed.
While Olive can come across as pessimistic at times, I think it was completely understandable based on everything that has happened recently to her. Her faith was wavering and upset at everything, a pretty normal human reaction. I love that everyone in Hawaii was witnessing and praying for her, even as some of them have challenges of their own that they’re currently facing.
Overall very clean, it had a sweet, very light romance that was precious to read. Cancer is an major part of this story, so it might be upsetting to some who have been affected to read about (or they might related to Olive better).
I do have to say that I’m disappointed about one thing. The release date of book two being so far off. I’m looking forward to reading it. ;)

This was a really sweet and refreshing summery story that might have put me in a summery mood. (Not a huge summer fan here.) I could see the amazing Hawaiian setting the whole time, and I was more than happy to be immersed in that culture and Olive's life. All of the characters had this sweet side that made them lovable even when they were predictable or I couldn't relate. It was neat to see Olive's struggle with faith, the hardships around her, and the shift in her mindset. That last one particularly required a lot of her and I loved that! The entire story was fresh even when it wasn't lighthearted.

The real reason I removed a half star is that the storyline wasn't stellar in my opinion. It was fairly straightforward but executed well. I also prefer faith and Christian elements in books to be a little more personal and less evangelical ... I guess? That's just my preference because I'm not as outgoing or contemporary or as much of an intentional evangelist as some of the characters were. So it was still realistic but not my flavor. ;)

I recommend for 10+ just for reading level, some difficult circumstances, and light romance.

Age Appropriate For: Ages 13 up for thematic elements and mild romance
Best for Ages: 13-20

Ask me what my least favorite storytelling type is, and I’m quick to tell people the first person, present tense is at the top of my list. Example: I go through the door and stop where I stand. I’m more a third person or at least past tense kind of girl. However, this book got five stars despite being written in my least favorite style. That alone says a lot.

Taylor Bennett has the polish and the skills of an author twice her age and experience. This didn’t feel like a first novel, which is a huge compliment. This is debut novel she and of which the writing world can be proud.

Olive and all the other characters in the story, were deep with well thought out personalities, likes, dislikes, and heartaches. At first, I was annoyed with Olive, but I quickly found myself pulled into her story and swallowed by her emotions. Yes, I forgot I was even reading a present tense book because it was so well done.

The setting, in Hawaii, was very fun and perfect for summer. It was well researched, and I felt almost as if I had visited myself. I would love to reread this on the beach sometime. It is a perfect summer read.

The Christian element to this story was well done. Bennett allowed the story to unfold and the faith of the characters to flow naturally. Nothing felt forced, preachy, or underdone. It was perfect.

The romance also was very mild (more hinted at than anything else). It wasn’t sickening like most teen romances are, yet felt very natural for the situation. There was some interest shown and almost no physical contact. This does take place on the beach so there was some talk of bathing suits and also conversations about dating and such.

I highly recommend this book to those looking for clean books for teens, for a nice summer read, and anyone who likes emotional contemporary fiction.

intro:

trying to review this amazing book won't be easy XD it's too good to express in a few words -- you just need to read it yourself. i was so honored to receive an arc and get to be a part of the street team so ... a big thanks to the author for that!!

pros:

- this book is by a 17-year-old author and traditionally published at that - i mean, that's impressive! and anything like this immediately perks up my curiosity and i'm asking, "so how good is it really?"

- its cover is is just plain gorgeous.

- it's set in Hawaii, so that's pretty much #perfection (did i ever say i might wanna move to Hawaii? bc that's how much i love this setting :D)

- and it was so beautifully fleshed out - I FELT LIKE I WAS THERE. IN HAWAII. the sun. the beach. the atmosphere. the tourists. the summer vibe. come on, it just can't get better. BRING ME BACK THERE ALREADY.

- also it mentions HAWAII FIVE-O which is pretty much my favorite cop show of ever, so this book kinda deserves my life long devotion ;)

- then the main character's name is Olive (how can i not love anyone by that name?) and she's snarky and selfish and strong headed and snobby at first (also GRUMPY) but whoa she's dynamic and really hurting inside

- she DOES have an attitude problem but i admire that resolve and caring underneath it

- and i love how in spite of herself she was pulled into ALL THE FUN XD

- ok so moving on - there's Jazzy. we all need a Jazzy in our lives. she's all sunshine and enthusiasm and smiles in spite of pain. not covering up pain. in spite of.

-BRANDER. IS. SO. CUTE. literally. i adore the whole "mr. hair-gel" episode so so much *cracks up thinking about it* and he's just awesome, ok? i love how the "no dating" standard was just plopped there smack in the middle of a contemporary XDD

- i really likes Olive's granny and sis too ^.^

- the character development and growth were just ... magnificent. i really appreciate how there's this inner conflict with Olive, and how she has to weigh her options and make big decisions and chose what's most important to her right now. what's the most important thing to do, whether or not it goes against her selfish desires

- the premise. the theme. the plot. it all goes so well hand-in-hand.

- it's about a girl who's hurting bc her mom died. it's about a girl doubting God.

- it's about a girl trying to raise money to fly back to her home in Boston to stop her dad from selling their house

- it's about music and jewelry and shave ice

- it's about cancer and money and church

- it's about friends and second chances and fundraisers

- it's about pain and porch swings and miracles

- it's less preachy than most YA Christian books i've read but it kinda speaks to your heart just the same

- you need this book. you really do.

cons:

- none

- except ... one piece of logic escapes me

conclusion:

this is a beautiful debut by this young author that you all should read. it gives the perfect blend of beauty and pain, adventure and meaning. can't wait for the rest of the series!!

Porch Swing Girl was one of my most memorable summer reads. Taylor Bennet's debut has left me wanting even more of her writing!

What I Loved...
The setting. Hawaii, shave ice, sandy beaches, sunshiny days, scores of tourists, plenty of coconut and pineapple and so much YES. Enough said. <3
The message. I believe that the message of Porch Swing Girl is one that everyone must hear, for it is one that can change one's life and bring hope and healing. <3
The characters. I LOVED JAZZY SO MUCH!!!! She was my favorite character in the whole book. I wish she was real because then we could sit and chat over some shave ice. And then Olive's grandma, and her sister... Oh, I wish that they were all real!
Brander's future bonfire. Just read the book, okay? xD

What I Didn't Love...
Olive got on my nerves at some times. She seemed a bit whiny at times, in my opinion. A bit whiny and moody, but she made up for it. =)
It felt a bit preachy at times. Olive's friends and grandmother seemed to preach a bit to Olive. It happens a lot in Christian fiction, and I felt that the message could've been delivered just as strongly, if not even more so, without all of the preachiness.

Overall...
Overall, this was a weekend read that was at times heartbreaking, at times wildly fun, and all in all a novel that I highly recommend. =)

Quote From the Novel...
Aloha--hello and goodbye. And something else--I pull out my phone and do a search. Aloha. Hello. Goodbye. And love.

WRITING STYLE: 5 STARS

Lookout YA Fiction World: Taylor Bennett is one talented wordsmith. Taylor might be a teen author, but that doesn’t make her debut offering any less professional. In fact, her writing style is far more polished and creative than books I’ve read from authors triple her age. The fact that she’s only seventeen, and can write witty, vivid, snappy, YA-ish, sentances, makes me excited for her future. This book embodies everything you’d expect light, YA, Christian fiction to be. It’s simple, light-hearted, and painted with word pictures of imagery just as vivid as Hawaiian sunsets.

OVERALL STORY-LINE: 4 STARS

Olive Galloway isn’t a character I could particularly relate with, but I think Taylor did a good job on having her grow toward the end of the book. Since this is a series, I’m sure Olive’s character will continue to develop and draw closer to the Lord in books to come, so those who are concerned about Olive being a strait-up-brat: well, she is.

So many Christian fiction authors are terrified to write “imperfect” characters, so I think it’s interesting Taylor decided to tackle a “struggling, snooty, self-centered teen”. (Even if she drove me nuts.) There were many times I wanted to smack that girl in the face, but I think it was intended to be that way. We learn that Olive is fresh out of a tragic past, and her shallow relationship with God has completely fallen apart. As the story progresses, Olive must choose between selfishness and selflessness, and decide if she’s going to place friendship at a higher priority than her current, all-consuming-goal.

The story pacing felt pretty slow at times, but I maybe it was just those relaxed Hawaii vibes.
I kinda wish I wouldn’t have known the end before starting the book (there’s a major spoiler on the back of the book), so for me, that took away some of the enjoyment, as far as the storyline goes.

FAITH CONTENT: 3 Stars

As I mentioned above, Olive’s relationship with God is a mess. She blames Him for her mother’s death and is irritated with any encouragement Gramma or Brander try to offer. The faith content in this book is very light (as is most YA Christian fic these days). Olive slowly comes around, but only taking baby steps toward God. Like I said, this is a series, so hopefully we’ll see her relationship deepen in books to come.

QUESTIONABLE CONTENT:

None. It’s very clean, appropriate for ages 10+. The “romance” is nothing more than what you’d find on Disney Channel. My only word of caution would be that it deals with a heavy topic: cancer. So that might be a bit intense or upsetting for little ones, or for anyone who’s been through a difficult death with cancer in their own lives.

OVERALL RATING: 4 Stars

If you’re a pre-teen looking for a light-hearted, contemporary, summertime read, with similar vibes to Melody Carlson, or Robin Jones Gunn, you would probably enjoy Porch Swing Girl.

This book was incredible, to say the least. Taylor is such a sweet person, and to know that she is so young and still getting TRADITIONALLY published, with such a great debut novel....it's amazing. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of this book.

Now that that's out of the way, let's get on to a smol personal review XD (which will probably be long and fangirly).

I had no idea what I was getting into when I picked this book up. I knew vaguely that it was going to be about Hawaii but not how, or what the plot was, or anything like that. I just knew the first sentence: "I hate Hawaii." (Which, by the way, is an AMAZING first sentence...and really gives you the feel of the whole book XD) So the story and characters all came out of nowhere as a really pleasant surprise.

This is Christian fiction the way I like it--realistic, struggling characters, who are oh-so-far from perfect but are still fighting through the difficulty of life to find hope and joy in God. It wasn't overly preachy (one of the characters got a bit preachy a couple of times, but the other characters, including him, kind of called him out for it, which was actually really amusing), but it still had that message of love and hope and the fact that God is amazing and worthy of everything. There's growth in faith and returns to God and questions about why God lets bad things happen....it's amazing. (Not too fluffy, but also not overly dark, at least not in my opinion--kind of right in that nice gap of Christian contemporary that is just about perfect.)

The characters weren't exactly BRILLIANT, but they were still very lovable and I appreciated them very much. Olive was snarky and rather bitter, but she was going through a LOT and watching her character arc was a lot of fun. Jazz was a ray of literal sunshine, and I loved her. Gram was super lovable, and didn't really feel like your stereotypical grandmother. Brander was a SWEETHEART. I just really fell in love with all the charries, guys.

The setting, too, was really well done. I loved the Hawaii-ness of it all. It was so well-described, especially the culture....and as a girl from New England I can attest to Olive's Boston attitude being pretty accurate. XD I finished this book really wanting to visit Hawaii.

Overall, this was an excellent read. I very much enjoyed it, especially the characters, and I'd recommend it to anybody who likes reading really good Christian fiction. (Just remember: You're going to want to go get a shave(d) ice when you're done...)

YA Christian Contemporary . . . .

This is not my usual genre. In fact it's an almost-gone genre, so why you ask did I give it a try?? Well, *smiles timidly* It was free, a lot of my friends gave it high ratings, and I was coming out of a reading slump . . . so I was in the mood to DNF if I felt like it. :P

My feelings changed toward the book though, instantly. I fell deeply in love with the writing style and Bennett's way of weaving her faith throughout the story. It created so many sweet emotions inside my heart I couldn't not like it. For the record I didn't set out not to like this book, I just didn't have the perfect attitude starting it. ^.^ The Porch Swing Girl, however, amazed me and touched me in many areas.

First off the details were breathtakingly mixed with Taylor Bennett's author voice that I was awestruck. Like, "umm, what just happened??" those descriptions were extremely original!! I loved it!! I don't get to read a lot of YA books with beaches, or jewelry in them. It's just not popular, neither is the real romance. It starts with friendship. And this book dealt with friendship on a level I've seen never before.

Content?? *laughs* Two kisses, one on a cheek, one on a forehead. Mentions and some details of medical issues and such. Discussions of a leg being chopped off surgically, and details given. Some deaths discussed. (I would let a ten year old read it . . . but they probably wouldn't understand everything, that's why it's YA :P)

Romance was really just friendship. 😏

The plot was strategically arranged and I loved the tension build up and Olive's moment of salvation. It was perfect . . . things, in my opinion couldn't have been better. ^.^ It was a first person narration only told by Olive. That was probably one of my favorite parts about the book.

The characters all had so many neat things that blended with their personalities!! I'm only gonna talk about a few in depth . . .

Olive ~ I felt many different vibes the whole time . . . she was stressed and angry, full of attitude, unpleasant, bitter. Then halfway through she became more enjoyable and relatable. The pains and depression she was feeling I considered pitiful and I felt for her partly, but no matter how hard Bennett tried I was unable to understand. Maybe it was just Olive's way of dealing with loss, but the tragedy I've been through was different and I couldn't relate.

Jazz ~ So bubbly!! Eekk!! I loved her immediately . . . buttt at the end I was really sad. And she maybe crushed my heart with her own broken spirit. 💔

Brander ~ Ahhh, what am I supposed to say about him??! He's a singer!! He's on fire for the Lord!! He's amazing!! He wants to save himself for the girl he will one day love!! *squeals* I really, really appreciated hearing that. Also, he might be handsome. :P Oh, and the way they met first!! 💞💞 I couldn't stop laughing!!

My favorite thing, however, was the dedication and author's note (yes, I'm one of those rare people who actually read that!). How Taylor is determined to write for the Lord and how she's driven to surrender it all to Him. I really appreciated finding another author as driven as myself to write for the Lord in that way!! I was ecstatic after reading it!!

Overall I found the book to be especially amazing, but I couldn't rate it five stars. Five stars is for those books which make me squeal and fangirl. While this book was amazing, it didn't bring out the fangirl inside me. ^.^

**Note** ~> It took me forever to figure out what I was going to say. This review has been so different from my other ones, in the way that I was constantly struggling to find the right words to express myself. It was hard. Just know that this book is . . . Indescribable.

Aloha, dudes! I just got back from being transported to Hawaii and it was the best.😍🌅

I absolutely loved this book!! Initially what caught my attention was the name of it (I love porch swings!) and the cover. I’ve been wanting to read it for a while now. I’ve been following Taylor on Instagram for months now and just from knowing her virtually, she seems like the absolute sweetest person!!

There’s so much I loved about this book... so I guess I’ll make a super random list because I’m pretty sure I won’t be able to write a very coherent, serious review tonight... so I’m just gonna have fun with it. 🥰

Things I Loved
- The setting! It was perfect and made me want to go to Hawaii pronto... but since I can’t, this book was a pretty awesome substitute! ;)

-The characters! I loved them. The side characters were some of the best ever!!
•Jazz was the sweetest, kindest person!! Her cheerfulness despite her problems was really inspiring.
•Her little sister was adorable and Gram lovable.
•And Brander... he is amazing. I loved him. I mean, he’s a very rare teenage guy. He’s passionate about his love for God, he can sing, he’s a good listener, he doesn’t date just any girl because he’s waiting for the right one, he’s sweet, he’s respectful, etc... the list could go on and on. He was just awesome! ;)

-The friendship. I loved the friendship that Olive, Jazz, and Brander have. It’s awesome!

-The faith. Taylor weaves the messages of faith and God’s love in so beautifully. I loved it!!!💕

-The humor. This book made me laugh several times. I mean her first time meeting Brander was pretty hilarious and the whole bonfire with girl’s numbers? That was great. 😂 Don’t know what I’m talking about? Go read the book!

-The late nights on the porch swing. That sounds so peaceful and nice. 😍

-The ending and the meaning of aloha. Ohhh!! *squeals* I LOVED that part. (I’m totally shipping Brander and Olive. I cannot wait for the next two books! Yayyyyyy)

I’m not gonna make a list of things I disliked because ya know what? There wasn’t anything I disliked!! I enjoyed every minute of it. It was like having a blast in Hawaii and I can’t wait to go back!!

I really love this genre, one I want more of in the Christian market. It’s so much fun and Taylor Bennet did it soo well! I can’t believe she was the same age as me when she wrote this!! She’s very talented, no doubt about it.
I recommend this book to anyone looking for a super clean, YA contemporary read! It’s a perfect summer read as well. Now all I want is beach, snow cones, and sunshine. It was a blast!

4 stars & 4/10 hearts. To be perfectly honest, I went into this book expecting to dislike it. And at first I really disliked it, because Olive grated so much on me. Her rudeness and bitterness and lack of respect and the way she kept bothering people and butting her head against a hopeless task really bugged me. After the first 40% or so, though, I started to like Olive. I kind of began to understand her and the way she felt (being a bit of a drama queen myself). I also found that the lessons she learned were ones I really needed to be reminded of just then—aka, surrendering my desires, and not (pre)judging people.
However, I had a few issues with this book. The teen crush bugged me, and Brander kissing Olive’s cheek twice without permission offended me—that’s just not right, dude. I had some issues with the church that Olive went to (very progressive) but their preaching and theology was pretty good. There was lots of mentions of bikinis and topless guys, as well as other immodest clothing. Overall, it had a very teen feel, which isn’t my fav, but it had very good messages, and I enjoyed the sarcasm, for the most part. I would really like to try this author again, especially the other books in this series!

A Favourite Quote: “Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart—Psalm 37:4 This doesn’t mean that we should treat God like a vending machine—it doesn’t say that God will make cupcakes and kittens rain down from Heaven the second we crack open our Bible in the mornings. It says He will give us the desires of our heart. In other words, the closer we get to Him, the more we take delight in His ways, the more He will work in our heart and turn our desires to reflect His own.”
A Favourite Beautiful Quote: “I watch out the window as the sky paints itself with the pale, rose-hued dawn.”
A Favourite Humorous Quote: “How does my mouth have the courage to say this stuff before checking with my brain?”

This was exactly what I wanted it to be, oh my goodness. The setting, the characters, the faith content, it was just perfect.
Things I loved:
- Brander (*heart eyes*)
- Jazz (I want to be her friend please)
- Macie (she's the cutest)
- Olive (eventually. she had to grow on me)
- The setting (even though I haven't been to Hawaii, I felt like I was there!)
- The Shave Ice Shack (can I go there please?)
- The way Taylor handled grief. I have to talk about this. As someone who has lost a parent, I really appreciated it. Olive handled it differently than her dad, who handled it differently than Macie, who handled it different than Gramma. And that was perfection. How Olive doubted God and her Gramma clung closer to Him. It was amazing, and I applaud Taylor for writing it.
- The ship... I loooooved it. (and I just loved how pure and adorable it is and I can't wait to see where it goes in the next books)
- I want to visit the church, it seems so awesome.
- It was just so nostalgic feeling and wonderful.

Absolutely five stars. I loved it. So good.

What would it be like to lose your mother quickly, unexpectedly, and tragically to cancer? Then, what if your dad left on top of that? These are the issues that Olive faces as she stays the summer with her grandma and younger sister in Hawaii—except, Olive isn’t planning on staying in Hawaii. She’s determined to earn money for a ticket to Boston to join her dad and prevent him from throwing out all their memories of her mom.

Olive was a very believable, hurting girl. Yet, she also took the believable journey to healing as time progressed. She is surrounded by people that she really hasn’t asked for—Gramma, sister Macie, and new friends Jazz and Brander. Each of these characters play an important role in Olive’s life, and help her to step out of her misery and selfishness.

The Christian thread in this book was more of a contemporary perspective with youth groups, Jesus freaks, Christian rock, and being on close terms (or not) with God. There was a strong emphasis on seeking God, praying, and of being in church. A few verses were quoted, but I realized after I finished, that there didn’t really seem to be an emphasis on God’s Word in personal life. That is probably just me being nit-picky, but it is a danger that I’ve seen personally in the modern church movement, so maybe that is why it stood out to me as missing here.

With this being a teen book, I wasn’t expecting much romance. But Olive is sixteen. Given the contemporary nature of the book, as the story progressed, it didn’t really surprise me when she begins to notice a guy and have feelings toward him. Apart from my personal conviction that sixteen is really young to begin serious dating, the romance was handled fairly well and was clean. The guy was clearly trying to follow God before pursuing a girl, and he was determined to only date a girl who was serious about God. The only kisses were those on the cheek and forehead. But there was an underlying thread of emotional longing and attention toward the guy.

Olive did have a lot of attitude issues. They were all very understandable, and for the most part, they were resolved in this book. Her disrespect toward her dad was not resolved, but I understand there is another book in the series, so this could be something the author is planning on developing with Olive’s future life.

Would I hand this to a teen? If they are your typical, public school-going teen or if they’re your modern, less conservative Christian, then yes. There are no drugs or explicit moral issues displayed. However, if it’s a conservative teen, I would hesitate to do so. Had I read this when I was a teen, it probably would have fed my romantic fantasies of boyfriends and probably would have made me discontent in some areas. There also seemed to be very loose standards for dressing (shorts, tank-tops, off-the-shoulders), which some conservatives would have an issue with.

In looking at the book as a whole (the author in me is speaking), this is one of the best books I’ve read by a teen author. There is a definite goal, climax, purpose, conflict, and resolution. It is a very satisfying read.

*I received this book from the author and happily provided my honest review*

Wow! This book was awesome! I really want to add it to my bookshelf. I'd recommend this to girls 12-18, due to interest/maturity level, though the book is perfectly clean.

I loved the characters. They were dynamic and relatable. I want a Tutu Bonnie, Macie as a little sister, and a Jazz and -- you get the picture. Olive's actions were surprisingly understandable; even a usually-happy person can gain an attitude when it seems like everything is falling apart. Anyone who's grieved over the loss of a loved one will be able to relate to her.

The setting was also a bonus. Hawaii is now at the top of my travel list! I really got a feel for the setting, and the description wasn't just info-dumpy, it was a part of the story.

Also... music! I'm a part of the youth worship team at my church, so I loved Brander's guitar and singing skills. I'm also so glad Olive didn't get involved with music to get closer to him. She worked at a shave ice shack and her hobby was beading, which is very unique and I loved it.

Like I said, a lot of the book was unique. However, there were a few elements of the book I've seen a lot in YA Christian fiction. For example, the girl who "used to be" a Christian and the strong-in-faith guy. Plus, Jazz's side of the plot could have been a lot tighter and stronger. It felt a little random and it would have been nice if we could have seen more of how the Boston plot and Jazz's plot created conflict with each other; it seemed to be a bit forgotten.

However, this is still one of my new favorite books. The author is being traditionally published in high school, if that tells you anything about her talent! I can't wait for more in the Tradewinds series.

I have mixed thoughts on this book. There were things I liked and things I didn’t like.

Things I liked.
Most of the characters were enjoyable and I liked how different they all were.
I enjoyed the setting since I don’t read many books set in Hawaii.
The parts about learning to trust that God has a bigger plan for everything was well done.

Things I didn’t like.
Olive’s attitude toward her father was rude and disrespectful, and she never once apologized or seemed to think it was wrong.
No one seemed to care that Olive was dealing with grief and loss. No one really tried to help her or was willing to really listen to her. Everyone just “prayed for her” and let her wallow in confusion, hurt, and anger.
The seemingly constant “Whatever” that Olive and others said was really bugging me by the end.
I’m not a fan of first person present tense so it was a bit harder for me to feel connected to the characters and their stories.

Overall, I’m not sure if I liked or didn’t like this story. I might try the next book, but I might not.

I'll be honest, I did not expect to like this book as much as I did. I am not a huge fan of Hawaii as a book theme, but this book made it work so well.
Olivie's struggle was so understandable, and I related to her attitude issues so much. Her little sister was portrayed so perfectly. All the characters were so vivid, and the relationships realistic.
I have rarely ever read a book that let the spiritual element unfold so naturally and slowly as this book, but it made the whole book amazing.
I rarely rate books five stars if it isn't on my favorites list, but this book just deserved it.

Ah, how lovely to be transported to Hawaii in the summer with shaved ice, hot sunny days, and good friends. I took awhile to get around to read this sweet book because honestly, I didn't think I would enjoy it. But overall, it's such a lovely book that deals with characters that are real and settings and events that drew me in. If ya need to get away this summer, Porch Swing Girl will be the perfect choice <3

FOUR STARS.

SO CUTE. oh my word, I read this in literally one day. <3 <3 I finished the book with a huge smile on my face, because of the hope-filled ending. (also, I need the sequel NOW)

what i loved
~the cuteness and sunshine. basically, this book was such a refreshing and sweet read. like an iced coffee on a hot, sunny day.
~COMPLETELY CLEAN. like, no content issues. only romance was a kiss on the cheek + forehead.
~the hope. I loved how Taylor wrote about grief and trusting God after such a hard, traumatic situation.
~just everything, okay??

what i disliked
~um, nothing??
~honestly, I can't think of anything
~maybe I felt that certain scenes were a littttlee preachy? but I don't know. Brander seemed very mature and theological for a sixteen-year-old :D

In conclusion, this book is amazing. One of my new favorites. It has restored my faith in the YA contemporary genre. :)) So, if you haven't read this, GO READ IT NOW. you won't regret it :))

I’ve been wanting to read Porch Swing Girl for several years. It seemed like a fun book and I kept hearing good things about it. I finally decided that this was the summer I was going to read it. I’m glad I did! It was a good book. I loved that it was set in Hawaii (a place I hope to travel to one day!). The story was good. It definitely had its sad parts too, but it had a good message about trusting in God.
I definitely plan to read the rest of the series!

4.5 of 5 stars {Rounded up to 5 on Goodreads}
I have previously started this book a few times, but it just felt a little grief heavy, and Olive was kind of annoying me, so I never made much progress. I'm really glad that I went back and finished it, though, because I have heard amazing things about this book (and this series), so I really wanted to love it.
This time, I did.
If you ride out the grief parts, and you just soak in the Hawaiian sunshine, this book is just about perfect. I read it accompanied by Hawaiian music, and it really just felt like a summer vacation. I have a new favorite 'beach read'.
I loved getting to see this cast of characters, and I'm excited to get to see them throughout the next books in this series. I believe all the books take place in Hawaii, which just makes me even more excited. I can't wait to read through all of them. I hope that they're as amazing as this first one was!
Because... I was holding back tears at points, and the emotions within this first-person book just totally tugged at my heartstrings, and made me feel so happy at the end. I just thought this story was so amazing. I loved it so much.
And, because I just need to say it...
FAITH CONTENT!!!
If more teenagers would write faith-filled books like Taylor Bennett, I would be recommending a whole lot more books. This book felt like a real story, with real characters, and I appreciated its raw and vulnerable moments along with its crazy great summer fun moment. Let me just say that Brander was great, and that Jazz is the best, and I'm hoping we see a whole lot more of them in future books, because that would be amazing.
All in all, I would definitely recommend this book to teen readers. It was very clean. If you want a full content guide, check out Lindsey from BGCG's review here: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
She does an excellent job, and is mostly responsible for me reading this book! So, thanks so much, Lindsey!!! And, thanks to Taylor Bennett for writing this terrific book!

An excerpt from the review:
All that I can say is, it's amazing and a really enjoyable and touching read about a teen girl who is dealing with teenage life general along with losing the world that she once knew and nearly loses one that she starts to adjust in after the death of her mum. It was so encouraging for me to see that in all trials, there is a way out, and as Christians, even when all else seems to fail, God is always at work within us😊

This was a heartfelt story that teens will love! Well, I did too, although I'm *slightly* older than a teenager ;)
Taylor Bennett is an impressive young wordsmith and did a standout job painting the angst of a teenager in the tropical setting of Hawaii! As a lover of all things beach related (without having been to the Hawaiian islands) Miss Bennett wove an authentic feeling picture of the vibe, the lingo, and the rhythm of life on the island.

The main character, Olive, goes through a terrific and believable transformation through the course of the story, while the other minor characters have their share of change as well. To be honest, I didn't care for Olive as a person in the first part of the story (which means the writing was good because I had strong feelings against the girl. She was not a likable girl and, personally, I can't fathom being as rude as she was at times, even when I was a teenager myself (and even if I had lost someone close to me).

But, I'm sure there are people like that out there...I'm just glad I've never met them! But Olive's island friends (Jazz and Brander) are certainly patient and give her a lot of grace...which displays the love and mercy of God to Olive and readers alike :) And it also helps to transform Olive's rough edges as the story goes, which I was particularly thankful for!

Finally, the story is written in first person present tense which is not my favorite...although I know it is quite popular in YA books. That said, Miss Bennett wrote from that perspective with deft ease. I have a harder time settling into that POV but eventually I did find my reading groove--it's just a personal preference (and as a writer, I'm sure I'll eventually try it myself...so there's that!).

All in all, this is a lovely story of friendship, family, and faith. It doesn't skirt sin or the gospel. It doesn't skimp on the pain of losing a loved one or the huge hurtle of getting one's life back on track after such a blow. Life is guaranteed to give us pain. Books like this reveal that pain can serve a purpose if we allow others to walk with us through the dark places in our life.

This was such a beautiful story of coming back to God and realizing what's truly important. I didn't quite know what I was in for when I started it; I just knew it was about a girl in Hawaii, nothing else.

Olive Galloway is staying in Hawaii with her grandma after her mother's death. Her dad returns home to "take care of things", which Olive fears is another way of saying he's going to completely do away with her old life and anything that reminds her of her mother. Desperate to stop him, she starts looking for a way to buy a plane ticket to fly home and stop him. But a friend she didn't mean to make finds her life turned upside down, and Olive has to make a difficult decision.

From the first line, I felt Olive's heartbreak. This poor girl was in great need of a big hug that I wished I could give her. Even though she was testy and a little rude at times, I understood where she was coming from. Of course that doesn't excuse it, but she definitely had a reason for her behavior. My heart ached for her every time she thought of something of her mom's that she didn't want to lose and texted her dad begging him to keep it. (That all felt very realistic, too. I can absolutely see myself doing that if I was in her position, and I can imagine the desperate feeling of losing control.)

JAZZ! I loved Jazz. She was a ray of sunshine and so loveable and I loved how chill she was most of the time with Olive. They had their moments, but Jazz understood that Olive was going through stuff and she wanted to be there for her.

Brander was so sweet and kind and I'm not gonna lie, I got a huge kick out of that fact that he was planning to start a bonfire with girls' numbers on his wedding day. xD

Olive's inner journey was very believable. Her development was subtle, not too rushed, and beautiful. It was very, very well done.

Overall, I very much enjoyed this book and I need to get my hands on book 2 as soon as possible!

When I first started this book, I struggled because it's a YA written in first person and the MC is a complaining, whining teenager. All the things I am not a fan of. So I put the book aside for a while.

Yesterday I was determined to give the book another try and after getting past the first few chapters, I found myself not able to put it down.

Although I am not a fan of books with grumbling angsty teenagers, I was glad to see her attitude improve after a while. I am also not a fan of teen romance and I was afraid it was going to head down that road at one point, but thankfully there was only the teensiest bit of that (hope that doesn't spoil it for anyone).

I've never really had much interest in Hawaii, but this book definitely grew my interest and made want to visit some day.

I think what I loved the most about this book is that I could resonate with the MC in a particular aspect because I have gone through a similar experience myself. In someways and at certain moments, I knew exactly how she was feeling and why she would feel that way because I have felt those very same things. That aspect also made the book hard to read because I struggle with any book with this particular aspect. If I say what is, however, then I will be giving spoilers.

I know this is a book that is going to stick in my memory for a while and I am eager to read the next two in the series.

Wow, this was just so... Wow!

I commonly pass over young adult books since they oftentimes lack faith, this book? Yeah, the elements of faith were so strongly potent that they just seep from the story.

I really love Olive, JAZZ, and Brander and how they became friends even though they didn't start off as friends. I would say that I wish I had read it before, but, I think I read it just when I needed to.

I highly recommend that you try out this book, it is well worth the time. Not to mention, who can turn away from a cover like that?!

Now to binge read the rest of the series on Kindle Unlimited!

I voluntarily received and reviewed a complimentary e/copy of this book which I received from the author/publisher/review company. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

Blurb:

And time is running out.

When I first saw the title of this book a few years ago, I immediately wanted to read it. Porch Swing Girl . . . yes . . .

This story was intriguing. The plot was catchy. The setting and descriptions were spot on. The writing style immersed me in the story, even though it's targeted at a younger age group. And, on that note, the writing style and voice really felt like a real teenage girl's thoughts, emotions, and reactions.

I did feel that there were a few plot holes. For instance, a character has a cold so bad that the character can't even speak a single sentence without much coughing and sneezing . . . and the next day said character is perfectly fine and the cold isn't mentioned again. And, as other reviews have mentioned, I spent much of the book wondering why Brander's rich parents didn't help with the money issue earlier - especially once we met them and found out what they were like. Also, how can a teenage boy who "doesn't date" ask a girl his age out to dinner alone at a fancy place, pick her up, and NOT expect it to be a date?? (It wasn't. But how could he think it wasn't, under the circumstances...? Especially without telling her it wasn't . . .) However, the biggest issue I had with this story is Olive's attitude towards her father and how the book portrays it. She spends most of the book trying to buy a plane ticket home and/or convince an authority in her life to let her go home (against her father's direct wishes). When she finally decides she's okay not going home, it's because it's what SHE now wants. And then when her father ASKS her to come home, she defies him and refuses . . . all because SHE now doesn't want to go home. What is more, this whole thing is portrayed as "It's God's will for you to not go home/be here right now and this is what God is telling you to do." Her defiance of her father's wishes and instructions has no repercussions - in fact, it seems that she's "blessed" for not listening to her father. However, I firmly believe that God works THROUGH parents (even imperfect parents. Crazy parents. Grieving parents. Unbelieving parents.) to communicate His will to teenagers . . . parents can be completely wrong, but I do not believe God blesses defiance no matter what. I'm okay with stories that show parental defiance but not plots where it appears that God is blessing defiance. Which is another issue - the characters in this book seem to have a superficial relationship with God - based on "going to church/youth group," singing worship songs, and reminding each other to trust Him because He works all things for good. The problems that the characters face and need God for (and the ways they grow in Him) seemed focused around physical problems: fixing grief, fixing relationships, fixing attitudes, fixing illness, fixing money problems. While there were "changes of heart," I didn't see portrayed in this story a real walk with God or getting to know Him and letting Him impact ALL areas of life. Even the "spiritual guy" seems to be a perfect singer/worship leader whose interest in spiritual things encompasses evangelism and trying to fix other people because they need an attitude adjustment. And yes, Jesus fixes things . . . but the point should be knowing Jesus and letting Him run our lives. <3

I loved the theme of the porch swing and how it was Olive's go-to place for hanging out. I also loved Gramma and all her mouth-watering baking! The descriptions of the food made me hungry! I also really appreciated how the potential romance was handled - quite clean and light - and there was almost no romance at all. :)

I loved the liveliness of Macie and Jazz. I also LOVED the plotline of Olive sort of being a "Christian" in name but not sure if she could trust God in her own life personally - it was refreshing to see a story where the MC DOES believe in God but is hesitant/angry at God because of personal trauma. I enjoyed seeing her growth in this area.

Very interesting story, and so descriptive!

If you're looking for an attention-grabbing, couldn't-put-it-down, thought-provoking fiction read, Taylor Bennett's 'Porch Swing Girl' is right up your alley.

My opinion?
Love.This.Story.
Loved it to the point I read most of it early into the morning because I couldn't stop reading...

Bennett takes you on a trip to beautiful Hawaii, incorporating the culture, lifestyle, and scenery of the islands. The characters are well-written and extremely relatable, and realizing I hit the end and will have to wait to read the next novel in the series was quite a let-down.

The lessons and truths Olive learns throughout the story are quite identical to the ones I've been facing in my own life, and this story was a blessing and a reminder to continue to seek God through all the unknowns, confusion, and pain that we face. Besides being a wonderful read, 'Porch Swing Girl' brought to mind the truth that I can "trust the unknown future with the known God", to paraphrase Corrie ten Boom.

If you love tropical getaways, entertaining characters, truth reminders, "anything is possible" potentials, and mixture of laughs and tears - pick up this book. Hoping you enjoy this little gem of a novel.

I so want to read the next book in this series... and the next and the next and all of them! It was like the Christy Miller series, but without drugs, drinking, and sex which is why I didn’t especially like that series. I love this book so much! It has inspired me to deepen my relationship with God! Please pick up this book and the next one in the series! The only thing I didn’t like about this book was Olive’s attitude during the beginning, but it pointed out that she is not perfect because no one is.
