The drama drops a notch as the focus shifts first to the cliffhanger from last volume for two of the side characters and then to an entertaining but tropey sports day/illness aside.

Most of the book is devoted to a flashback explaining the unlikely romantic relationship in junior high between Tomo's love interest and her best friend that was revealed in the first volume. Good stuff, funny and well-executed, but combined with the first two stories it gives the volume a placeholder feel.

The bonus story is predictable but remains hilarious due to the body language and facial expressions.

Por finnnnn sabemos qué pasó en el pasado para que los protagonistas se hayan distanciado por un año. Ahora es momento de que acepten sus sentimientos y los confiesen así arranca a ponerse interesante la cosa !!

3.5 de 5 estrellas.

Weakest volume of the series thus far for me. Opening with a mostly dramatic section that goes a little far and really doesn’t do Misuzu any favours. Cute ending, some jokes save the day, but... yeah... not my speed. And normally I like when Tomo-chan goes to a more serious place.

The follow-up section with the marathon is fun (you really see the difference in everybody’s athletic enthusiasm in this one, and it’s CLEARLY a butterfly). Really sweet callback to earlier volumes here too.

The best chapter involves a flashback to junior high and some explanation for why Jun and Tomo are how they are. Misuzu rebounds in spades in this section - we really focus on her and Jun over Tomo (Tomo gets the best line of the whole volume when she’s asked about her plans for goal scoring).

Misuzu is a fascinating character and it’s always worth noting how much characterization they give to what would, in a lesser series, be just a one-note “dark” stereotype. Still a good read, but not a home run.

While I didn't love the Carol parts of the book, getting Jun's side of what happened in middle school was definitely important to the story's endgame.

Is Tomo the most relatable character ever created for my butch ass? Possibly.

2020 Read #89

I think this volume was a bit unnecessary with how it outlined the backstory of why Jun and Misuzu started dating. Wasn’t all that already handled without the flashbacks? But regardless I do like the characters; they’re fun to follow. But how long can this series go on with the will-they-won’t-they of Tomo and Jun...?

An absolutely amazing volume. Every single chapter shines at their absolute brightest. From filling in even more of the group's collective backstory to Carol and Misaki experiencing what can take other series twice as many chapters it is all fantastic. The best volume of the series so far by a mile.

Misuzu finally gets her own book.

So naturally, it's as weirdly depressing and inspirational as one would expect. Misuzu Gundou is an eternal cynic and an erstwhile creature of darkness. She's a young woman ever on the precipice of decapitating whomever has the temerity to strike up a conversation. She's also a high school girl who loves her friends so much that she's willing to tear them down only to build them back up stronger than before.

TOMO-CHAN IS A GIRL! #6 views the social dynamics of unspoken affection through the prism of the manga's quietest character. Initially, Misuzu is tasked with annihilating Carol's emotional façade for the sake of Kousuke, Carol's so-called fiancé. Carol's bubbly personality is difficult to penetrate and it's darn near impossible for anyone who genuinely cares for the girl to get a decent sense of how they might engage her on a genuine, personal level. Misuzu excels at being mean. As such, fortunately or unfortunately, she must employ her skill with brutal acuity to give Carol's paramour a shot at true romance.

The manga often posits little tidbits as to how Misuzu truly feels about her peers. It's no secret the cynic quietly envies Carol, and others, for how easily they mesh with what society requires of them. Perhaps "being mean" isn't so much the defense mechanism readers typically ascribe to the girl's behavior, so much as it is a natural consequence of an affection deferred.

Tomo's too stubborn and too dense to understand how or in what ways her best friend Misuzu feels she needs the rough-and-tumble high schooler by her side. And yet, for readers with access to the girls' junior high memories, which comprise much of the second half of TOMO-CHAN IS A GIRL! #6, it's quite clear Misuzu isn't simply afraid she'll never be loved, she's afraid she'll be left behind by those who merely tolerate her.

It's hard to know whether Tomo or Jun or even Carol will truly verbalize the extent to which Misuzu depends on their company to power through each day. Perhaps that's part of the charm of the manga series — perhaps they never realize how much Misuzu values them. It's altogether sad, strange, and hilarious, and constitutes another wily volume of a delightful comic.

The daily slice-of-life adventures of a fiery martial artist tomboy named Tomo, her goth ice-queen friend Misuzu, and her chaotically sporadic friend Carol. It mostly revolves around Tomo balancing her masculine personality and interests with her growing sense of femininity, her wacky antics with her two best friends, her embarrassingly awkward attempts at romance with her childhood crush Jun, and failing hilariously at trying to accomplish basic normal people things because of her rockheaded straightforwardness.

I definitely wasn’t expecting to rate this series so highly when I first started reading it out of the blue. It’s not a masterpiece of amazing storytelling or anything, but it turned out to be way better than it had any right to be just based on sheer fun factor. The comedy, romance and friendship dynamics are hilarious, wholesome and enjoyable from beginning to end.

The romance is mostly just a nice little cherry on top instead of being the central focus of the whole story. What really makes this series so good is the crazy antics between Tomo and her two best friends; Misuzo being the devil on her shoulder and Carol being the angel on her shoulder. Misuzo reminds me a lot of Wednesday Adams while Carol reminds me of Luna Lovegood.
The way their three personalities constantly clash and complement each other at the same time led to some brilliantly goofy and sweet moments.
A lot of the humor in the series is also surprisingly clever and subtle, making use of facial expressions, imagery and body language to deliver the punchline of a joke rather than just delivering it verbally. The chapters only being four panels each also helps with the precise and witty delivery.

On top of that, the romance between Tomo and her childhood friend Jun is just genuinely great. They’re both a couple of dopey athletic muscle heads who have treated each other like bros since they were kids and now convey their true feelings toward each other in adorably awkward ways. The dynamics between all the characters just worked really well.

A romantic comedy that can be enjoyed by people who don’t even normally like romantic comedies.

My rating: 4.3/5

Chapters 626-750!

Carol makes up with everyone (even gets her little revenge on Gundou) and gets a boyfriend (honestly her whole family is a case so it only makes sense that her lover is another one..) Speaking of Misaki-senpai, I'm glad he puts his crush on Tomo to rest finally and roots for her and Jun's relationship.

Tomo is so reckless. I'm surprised she hasn't gotten herself hurt more often (in terms of getting colds or a fever). I'm a sucker for falling ill and being helpless to another's help trope if done well. This one between Tomo and Jun was cute and satisfactory. Jun's care for her is slowly increasing more and more and it's endearing.

We get another glimpse of the great gender reveal and Jun's inside thoughts about it and also Tomo's reaction to learning that Jun never knew. It just lowkey sucks that the way Tomo answered the rumors was misunderstood by Jun and he took it as a sign to keep distance for a while till the rumor dies. He was definitely hurt by the indirect rejection and also the jealousy of other guys getting closer to her, but he didn't know how to handle it without making it look like he liked Tomo not long after realizing she was a girl. A YEAR WENT ON WITH THEM BARELY COMMUNICATING.
A YEAR.

This is when he and Gundou's insecurities lead them to want to find a temporary solution to bridge themselves closer to Tomo. This is when they tried to date and how that miserable event went. But hey they are all very close friends now... Jun and Tomo trying to be closer but T_T well you know how that's going considering this is volume 6.

This volume includes the class working students trope + maid cafe trope. It's fun to see and very enjoyable especially when Jun finds out and goes to see her working everyday after that point. This just warms my heart.

I love it when Jun and Tomo compete each other at their school's marathon however Tomo got sick so Jun carried her to the clinic. Plus I get to see young Jun, Misuzu and Tomo where I can see their pov. Jun still flustered by the fact that Tomo is a girl and Misuzu felt happy for awhile since she dated Jun. Despite Misuzu being mean that she is responsible of why Kousuke and Carol are together as lovers by making false information about Kousuke--Poor Carol cried a lot that day but she finally express her other feelings and stuff. The vibe of this manga didn't change and I really like it. Oh, I want more Carol and Kousuke hehe.

FINALLY! Each of the previous volumes I've wanted our main characters to get together and now it looks like we will finally be getting now that some decision were made! I can't wait to read the next two volumes in this series.

The flashback cleared up so much and I can’t believe I am so close to finishing this series. I really don’t want it to end! Getting more from Jun has been so great. He’s so dumb and smart and I just love it.

I really like the bits of drama that happened in this usually light-hearted and funny manga series.
I’m curious to see how how Jun reacts now that he’s officially realized he likes Tomo-chan.

More a reflection on the last time Jun and Tomo got awkward in middle school. I thought I was not going to like the moody parts, but I am invested in the characters and seeing this to the end.
