Gorgeous book. Copiously illustrated with full color photographs of architecture, architectural ruins, a great deal of period art - mosaic, fresco, bas-relief, sculpture (as well as later period paintings with classical subject matter)and many helpful maps.
I read this book to refresh my memory and found it a good source of basic historical information on Roman History, and culture. Was particularly helpful for the post-Augustus period. Covers Rome's beginnings, the Republic, Late-Republic, Julius Caesar (briefly) in a section called Death of the Republic, Julio-Claudian Emperors, 69AD Year of Four Emperors, Flavian Emperors, Five Good Emperors, Severus and His Legacy, Rejuvenating the Empire, Constantine and the Christian State, Collapse of the Empire, and Byzantium.
This book is well researched and delivers Roman history in easy to understand, organized bursts. I loved getting to see the pictures and pause in my reading to enjoy the images of history, which seemed to take me back in time. I really just loved the experience of reading this. I came away feeling more knowledgable about Ancient Rome and wanting to visit these fantastic ruins some day. There were a few grammatical errors and misspellings sprinkled throughout, but ultimately a great work.
This book is a visually stunning and engaging introduction to Ancient Rome. The images and maps are thoughtfully curated, immersing readers in the era, while the concise text distills complex events with clarity and depth.
