It's a sunny Day in Denver when Layne Parrish meets a date for an afternoon jaunt to an art museum. But explosions rocks the campus, and then the men in the black Hummers with the automatic rifles roll in. If Layne survives the onslaught, will he be able to save his date?

I kind of like this book. It was free, but it could have been more.
First off, way too short. Almost no details on who the bad guys were or what their ultimate aim was. Did they have a get-away plan? Weapon descriptions were way too simple and spotty. At times our hero did not seem to know what type of weapon he had (grenade launcher?). Wasn't he a former operator in some war zone or a spy of some kind?
To me the cardinal sin was when the main bad guy "Red" was killed off screen so to speak, by Layne's date. Not by Layne. The reader did not get to "see" it. No classic showdown between Layne and Red. No final parting shots by either side. I think this book failed in its main purpose: to get me as a reader to like Layne as a character, to show how bad a$$ he can be. From his lack of weapon knowledge to his date killing the bad-buy, I just do not see it.
I do applaud Jim's attempt to pay homage to Die Hard (my all-time favorite movie), but it is hard to actually carry out. Weak ending.
This is a short novella (I read it in one sitting), full of action and tense moments.
Layne Parrish is on a date with a girl named Jasmine, who is black. Layne is a big fan of The Game of Thrones and wants to see the exhibit at the museum that is dedicated to it. It's a first date.
They barely get into the place when Humvees pull up and a barrage of men dressed in black with no markings on them whatsoever invade the place with assault weapons. Meanwhile, there are more of them outside the building putting up a solid barricades.
Inside, the ringleader, Red, and a few of his comrades are gathering the patrons of the museum and separating the black people from the white people and the Jewish people from non-Jewish people. This was disconcerting, but there are people out there who still think like that. It added realism to the story. What happens to these people is heinous and scary.
Layne makes an amazing escape and the action escalates. He starts hunting these invaders down and gets into some extremely dangerous, intense situations. It doesn't always work out in his favor.
This book is a quick read with a ton of action and tension. I wasn't sure how it was going to end.
The best news is the book is free from the author's website.
Jim Heskett's Museum Attack (A Layne Parrish Thriller Novella) is part of a thriller series I now plan to read. I received a free copy, but let it sit for some time. Picked it up yesterday and and was swallowed up in it quickly. This is an honest review I am voluntarily posting.
Quite a thrilling read! The reader, Parrish and his new girlfriend don't know what's happening when two of the Denver Museum buildings are the target of numerous explosions which reduce the two buildings to rubble. Taking shelter in the third Museum building, the couple find they and many others are being held hostage by a large number of terrorists. There is a standoff between the numerous terrorists and a large SWAT contingent. No demands are made. But the terrorists are methodically executing hostages.
How can one man, Parrish, save his girlfriend and other hostages particularly since he can't even come up with a plan and has no weapons. once you start this book, you won't want to put it down!
I hadn't realised this was a "short story" when I started reading. The original idea for the book is really brilliant. Layne is visiting an art gallery with a new girlfriend when all hell lets loose. Jasmine and he get stuck with a lot of other hostages in the museum. Can Layne get them out of there before they all get murdered? I did like the tension in the book, it built up well as Layne creeps around corridors trying to avoid running into the "baddies", but in the end something was lacking for me. It ended quite quickly and I felt let down, like the writer had not made enough of the plot. It was also very very gory...so beware anyone who doesn't like that! I would read more by the author in the hope that a full novel would be better.
A novella to introduce the series. This story seems to start a few chapters in and finishes abruptly. You get all the action, but no character development. You do not know the main character's backstory other than the fact that he has a three year old daughter. You don't know the specifics of how he acquired his weapons/tactical knowledge. He's on a first date, but we learn nothing about the date. I really want to know if they have a second date! You also don't learn why a large, well organized, well financed force attacked the museum.
I liked the story enough to try a full length novel to see if the missing pieces are provided.
I'm hooked! Heskett is an amazing author who does an amazing job of character development, in fact, I read this book in a matter of hours. I'm a character reader, I get into what makes a character tick, who they are, why they do the things they do. After 18 reads over 2 series you think I'd be used to Heskett's writing, not so. This storyline is a roller coaster, thrill a minute, can't put down read all the while introducing a new character/series on the fly! I'll be reading more by this author!
Action-packed, that's for sure. White supremacists take over a Denver museum, along with locations in other parts of the country, apparently. I'm a bit surprised that SWAT didn't have more options for breaching the building, given this day and age of drones etc. The main character was able to get away with some not-so-very-covert actions, but that's the way it goes in this type of book. Since it is a novella, there wasn't much character development or time for back story, of course.
Talk about WHAM, BAM, THANK YOU MA'AM you get it with Museum Attack. I was introduced to Layne Parrish in the Assassins Series. When I signed up for Jim Heskett's newsletter I got Museum Attack for free. I can't wait to get to know Layne more. Okay now for the review. This is a novella where you get a starting point on Layne. You get bits and pieces about him, but sense this book is so short you don't get a lot of backstory, but I figure that will come with the Shado Soldiers. In my opinion Museum Attack is a good beginning to getting to know Layne Parrish. This story is full of action, suspense and blood. Some things are a little unbelievable, but I was okay with that. Overall I was intrigued to get to know Layne a little better.
Great action-packed short story. There are surprising twists on early every page. I read it straight through and enjoyed every minute of it. I'm always happy to find a new favorite author and series. I highly recommend it and hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
Disclaimer: I received a copy of this ebook from the author and this is my honest and freely given opinion.
As a teaser for other Layne Parrish (Jim Heskett) books this was a good start. Easy to read but also interesting and enjoyable. Obviously sets the scene as to who Layne Parrish is and how further episodes may pan out. I have a couple more to read from the authors “Free” deal so will continue to read those and then look at his other novels. Good thus far
A fast paced crime story of the bombing of a museum. Action, guns, crime crazy killers and mass murders. This story is interesting and intriguing. The two main characters are strong and engaging. The story grabs you quickly and you are wrought up in the story. I am definitely enjoying the books of Mr Heskett. I can’t wait to read the next one!
I am not usually a thriller/action reader but this short prequel was very good. The premise was believable, as long as you like the action hero with lot’s of skills and a little luck, but that is what makes these reads exciting.
I don’t want to spoil anything but I may be emailing the author for the “rest of the story”. It may be answered in future books but I am nosy and want to know now!
Wow, such a good intro to Layne! He's thrown into a situation that he's not expecting or prepared for. On a first date to a museum, harmless enough except for the well prepared, serious terrorists who take over the museum. Layne needs to save his date and the people in the museum from this bunch of hooligans who definitely mean business!
Terrorists invade and destroy a couple of museum buildings and take over another. Layne and his companion are among the visitors taken hostage. Very exciting story with action overload. Looking forward to reading Shadow Soldier, the next in line.
What a date! Enjoyable story were Layne goes on a date to check out a museum exhibition only to be caught up in an attack on the museum, in this fast paced action adventure. Has very good descriptions.
To say this novella is action-packed doesn't begin to cover it. Museum Attack is one of the most gripping, non-stop domestic terrorist stories written. After putting the book down, I realized my heart was still pounding and my hands shaking. Can't wait to read more of the Layne Parrish series.
Luke Parrish is taking a date to the museum to see the new Game of Thrones exhibit, when a group of terrorists take over the museum, killing hostages on a whim. Luke finds an ally in a hostage who is a former Army ranger.
Layne Parrish uses past skills to outsmart the invaders in this good thriller which includes plenty of suspense. This is a quick read so if you don’t have a lot of time to read this would be a great book for you to pick up.
Once again Jim gives us Layne in a rip roaring shoot ‘em up at a museum. A fantastic quick read which you can just can’t put down and leaves you wanting more ,
Short novella with an attack on a Museum. Needed more details on why the attackers struck. Rambo kind of story with on man against an army. Full on action. Definitely rooted for Layne.
