A long but intriguing story about the Tudor dynasty in England and how it came about. Basically it begins with a Welsh man moving to England with the goal of a better life and literally falling into the lap of a princess. It ends with the death of Queen Elizabeth after a long reign and life, who could not find a spouse for various reasons, and who would be succeeded by the Stuart king James.
Plenty of myths are exploded, such as the lady Jane Grey being an innocent stuck on the throne (she was a master politician), how Henry VIII would break from the Pope, but it didn't mean that England would become Protestant, how Mary I was supposedly "Bloody Mary" but Elizabeth was even more murderous, and how the defeat of the Spanish Armada was not so impressive. Definitely interesting reading, and the author avoids too much overdetailing or repetition.
