The Provocation’s over, but the Recompense has just begun.
Jack and her teammates at Axis have succeeded in stopping the widespread abduction of Capernica’s teenage girls and neutralized the operatives living among them. Now they turn their attention to uniting the nation against the Bruelim. It’s time to take the fight through the portal and make sure, once and for all, that the Provocation never repeats.
Even as they prepare, disgruntled Lowers hang on the brink of revolution. Their rebellion has the potential to split Capernica along its caste lines just when the nation should be pulling together against a common enemy. But how can Axis convey the importance of cooperation when they’re unable to tell the people exactly what dangers they’re facing? Forty-seven years ago, Governor Macron expressly forbid any investigation into the Bruelim and ordered the evidence from the Provocation destroyed. No one’s certain what she’ll do when she learns the files have been reopened.
Meanwhile, Jack remains crazy hopeful that upcoming Military maneuvers might once again throw her into contact with her best friend Will, while Ethan, her capable Axis partner, strongly hopes they do not. Neither she nor Ethan are prepared for the testing their partnership is about to undergo. Or the revelation of their most immediate threat.

Considering I have the memory of a goldfish, I really appreciated the summary of important events from book 1 incorporated in the first pages of this sequel. It picks up almost exactly where book 1 left off and delves straight into the story, with all of the characters I've grown to adore: Jack, Ethan, Will, Willoughby, Opie, Opal, Hoke...
Unfortunately, it's not quite as well-edited as the first book, but the handful of errors I noticed barely registered in the midst of such a gripping story. I did feel like I missed some details in regards to Opal's journal, and I wonder if I should have read the short story before delving into this book.
So far, this series reads like the author threw The Hunger Games and Divergent into a blender with a pinch of surprises and a dash of her own flair. There are a few parallels, but these books are well-written and engaging, and I really, really like them. And then there is the Big Twist, followed by the worst cliffhanger ever. Definitely have book 3 on hand when you finish this one! Wow.
Note: I received a free copy of Betrayal from the author in exchange for an honest review.
The story continues as Jack (Jaclyn Holloway) is recovering from being affected by the radiation that activates the genes in her from the race of Bruelim. Aliens that have been abducting people for centuries. Jack has become fully embroiled in the investigation and what is governor Andromeda Macron's involvement in it. Why has she been blocking the investigation? What all is going on and why? Jack has made many friends and is quickly becoming the focal point in all this. This second part is again a very good story that is hard to put down. The interactions and further character development is very well done. You continue to be drawn into their stories. Can't wait to continue in the 3rd part.
This was the book I wanted it to be! If you read back to my review of Book 1, you can see I was indeed in the character development with a passing interest in plot. This time, the characters are allowed to grow naturally and the plot takes the wheel: and what a ride it is!
I refuse to spoil it -- a natural reveal is necessary for it to make sense -- but it leaves you gleefully turning pages to see where we go next.
There really is no need to say more -- you need to grab this in one and start reading or you'll never catch up since I'm moving on to Book 3!
The second book in this series had more action which was a positive. The main character Jack is a bit annoying in Betrayal with too much emphasis on who she likes or does not like and that is the big reason for my three stars instead of four stars. The twist at the end, although able to guess earlier on in the two books, makes me want to read the third book to see what happens.
I love this series. I'm not usually a dystopian reader, but this series caught me from book 1. The characters and relationships and the slowly unfolding mysteries of the world--I love it all! If you want solid world-building, sweet romance, and heart-pounding action, this series is for you too! It gets grim in places, but nothing too graphic or horrifying.
Book 1 is free--be sure to try it, and see if you don't get totally hooked like I did!
