Benjamin Graham is a wanderer, going wherever the wind may blow, only to find himself out of wind, money, and unfortunately, his new horse. With only one prospect for a job, he lands on the Von Keller's dairy farm. Finding little motivation for milking cows, his only interest lies with their middle daughter, Nadine.

Restless, yet wanting to prove reliable, he agrees to take a journey to find the Von Keller's oldest daughter, Margaret. Missionary, teacher, and crusader, she has convictions and fervor to serve the Lord at any cost; now it seems even to her last breath.
Desperately, Ben relies on what little he has as she waivers between life and death. As he comes to terms with his new role, he finds an increasing attachment to this astonishing young woman. One starlit evening, his desires collide with hers and he finds his own future dangling in the balance. What kind of game is he playing with these sisters? He should be disowned by this family, but there is one he’s falling in love with. A broken chain, pulled from Margaret’s neck, burns in his pocket. Can he do the right thing or the honorable thing? Is it too late?

Reckless to reliable. Friendship to love. A past pointing to a future. God's truth-the breaker of all chains.

The Broken Chain is the second book in the Entangled Inheritance series by Julia David. It focuses on Benjamin Graham. The Benjamin portrayed in this installment barely held any of the traits presented in the first installment. And, frankly, I was not impressed with him at all. His only redeemable quality was in the last scene of the book.

Benjamin Graham is a wanderer, going wherever the wind may blow, only to find himself out of wind, money, and unfortunately, his new horse. With only one prospect for a job, he lands on yon Keller's dairy farm. Finding little motivation for milking cows, his only interest lies with their middle daughter, Nadine.

Benjamin battled with demons he could not control. He did not seem to fear any consequences. It often takes a major burden of guilt before an alcoholic realizes he needs to make a change. He goes to God in prayer. Do you think this man would be able to change?

Restless, yet wanting to prove reliable, he agrees to take a journey to find the Von Keller's oldest daughter, Margaret. Missionary, teacher, and crusader, she has convictions and fervor to serve the Lord at any cost; now it seems even to her last breath.

Margaret Von Keller faced her own trials and tribulations even though she was an avid believer in God. Benjamin experienced many trials and tribulations while fighting his demons. Benjamin seemed to have a lack of faith, which caused him to make many poor choices.

Desperately, Ben relies on what little he has as she wavers between life and death.

Wonderful love story with a very unusual "hero." I love Ben, but he drove me crazy. Margaret had some things to learn as well. Great character development, great journey toward love, and the song lyrics at the end are beautiful.

Great story premise. I'm not sure how I like Ben's relationship with Nadine, but it is so true how young people confuse love with those chemistry fizzies. But Ben finally sees the light not just about what love really is, but also sees himself through the eyes of God.

I know there are a lot of folks who buy into other people's opinions thinking that is truth. I didn't learn how false that is until my divorce driving back from Arizona. It was as if God embraced me, enfolding me in His hand and told me that the only person I needed to worry about pleasing was Himself. What a freeing moment that was. Especially when Bible study showed me I was acceptable to Him the instant I took His Son into my heart as my Savior.

I have never seen this fact illustrated in a work of fiction before. Great insight.

While working on a family friend's farm in 1880's Wisconsin, Ben Graham struggles to find self-worth and his way in life. He puts in long hours doing work he does not enjoy, and the only bright spot he sees is his friendship with the farm owner's daughter, Nadine. When chaos surrounds the household and comes to a boiling point, Ben is sent to retrieve Nadine's supposedly wayward sister. Margaret, whom the family largely disapproves of, has not only attended college but is now making her way through the Midwest serving and ministering on Indian reservations. Ben's journey to bring Margaret home dredges up his own questions about family, religion, and the path he ought to take in life.

Ben Graham is the brother of Levi Graham, one of the protagonists in Burgundy Gloves (the first book in the Mighty Ones series, of which this is the second book). When we last saw Ben, he was heading to the Von Keller's dairy farm for a job. Burgundy Gloves did not reveal much of Ben's true nature; mostly, he was shown as a typical younger brother: playful and goodhearted but immature. You don't have to read very far into Broken Chain to realize that he has much more depth and character than that. David expertly creates thoroughly-developed characters and lets the reader see the world through their eyes, without getting bogged down in unnecessary description. Ben, for example, is dynamic in Broken Chain. He is kind but defensive, playful but eager to fight, strong and flirtatious yet desolate and begrudging. He wants to do what is right, but does not believe it is worth trying when he has failed so many times before. He sees good in everyone else, but judges himself harshly. In short, Ben feels nearly every emotion and feeling that a real person does, and is a uniquely crafted combination of responses to the people and situations he encounters. He is beautifully human, flawed yet redeemable.

When Ben leaves the dairy to find and bring home Margaret, he sees it as one last chance to do something right and impress Mr. Von Keller so that he might eventually be seen as worthy of courting Nadine...or anyone of her status. Ben thinks he likes Nadine, but he isn't really sure at this point. Furthermore, Nadine has secrets of her own, including a beau her parents are not aware of and would not approve of if they did know. However, time on the road affects Ben, as does Margaret when she talks passionately about her convictions and relationship with God. His priorities shift slightly, and by the time he makes it back to the Von Keller dairy, Ben has matured exponentially.

Inspiring story

Ben was one of my favorite characters from this first book so I was happy to see him get his own story! Heartwarming and inspiring to realize God paid the price for our sins and we can break the chains that bind us. Loved how the goodness of his heart always shined, despite his flaws! Good read!

Enjoyed reading. Lots of character twists. I appreciated the struggle between doing what comes easy and what is right. It was a coming of age type story for the main character. Discovering himself and what he wanted to define his life. Quite a few themes running through this book. Great job Julia David!
