This was an OK book. It is written in a question/answer format, across 101 different questions.
Author Lasse Rouhiainen covers most of the current ideas and issues surrounding artificial intelligence.
While this book contains a lot of information for the reader new to AI, the more advanced AI enthusiasts won't find too much (if any) new information or ideas about the future of AI in here.
It's all pretty standard fare.
He talks at great length about AI "chatbots", talking about how useful they will be/are.
Well, maybe they will be in the future... Personally, I dislike nothing more when I call a company than having to navigate through some inept chatbot before reaching an actual person. He makes no mention of this consumer frustration in his chatbot talk. In fact, he even goes so far as to say how many people really enjoy talking to chatbots now. Where did he find these people LOL? I don't know too many people that would prefer to chat with a bot, over an actual person, when they call a company.
He also talks about how AI will revolutionalize the economy in ways that no one can fully predict. To offset the massive loss of jobs this will bring, he suggests a UBI (universal basic income).
While this sounds good at a cursory glance, he makes no mention of, nor addresses some of the major concerns around UBI, namely:
How will it be funded?
Will the small amount of money UBI actually proposes to dole out (~$10-12k/yr) be sufficient for most people? (I doubt it).
And most importantly (but not mentioned by him); What will such a large swath of the population do, with no job? No purpose in their labor to give their lives meaning? It will create an existential crisis that will see many/most of the now idle population descend into nihilism.
This could potentially be an unprecedented societal event, that could make or break civilization. He makes no mention of that, either...
One of the other major issues surrounding AI development is its use in military applications. Rouhiainen addresses this with some very "insightful" writing, saying: "An arms race in lethal autonomous weapons should be avoided." LMAO. No further explanations or discussion, however, on how this is to be achieved...
He joins respected AI researcher Max Tegmark, in his ridiculous propping-up of two "open letters", signed by 3,500, and 17,000 each, pledging to not build weaponized, militaristic AI.
Another resounding LOL to both of them, in thinking that anyone in the upper echelons of military brass will give two shits about some liberal AI researchers desires for pacifism when deciding to utilize weaponized AI or not...
It reminds me of many of the head researchers on the Manhattan Projects' desire to not actually drop the bombs they developed on Japan. They wanted to set them off on one of the tiny atolls in the South Pacific, in a display for Japan. Oppenheimer himself was vehemently opposed to actually dropping them on an opposing country.
Completely ridiculous, in retrospect, given Japan's reluctance to surrender, even after experiencing two nuclear catastrophes.
One can only imagine where the world would be now, without the Pax Americana that came into fruition after the dropping of the two bombs that ended WW2...

So, check this book out, if you are a newbie to the AI discussion, and would like an easy-to-digest cursory read.
But if you are thinking of reading this book in the hopes that it will read like something written by Ray Kurzweil or Nick Bostrom, you might want to give it a pass...

1/ The author is not a firsthand expert on AI, only a “lecturer” or “public speaker” of some sort. Thus, information presented is “second hand”, with lots of references to other sources (including Wikipedia entries and YouTube videos). His opinions are emphasized heavily with I believe, I predict, etc., which is pathetic, as all of those conclusions the reader can easily make for themselves. Moreover, some of the footnotes are misplaced and incorrect.

2/ Style of writing is very elementary, like is intended for children or “dummies”. Even the general reader must be treated with respect and should not be spooned with introductory information in every chapter (“In this chapter, I will cover this and this and this topic”, and only then move to the actual topics.)

3/ Lots of repetitive information and “page fillers”. For example, the author even tried to insert an excerpt of an interview with some famous expert on AI or something like that…

4/ Most sources cited are from 2016-2017, so you won’t get the latest AI developments anyway.

5/ Overall, disappointing and very annoying experience. Fake experts should not even think about writing a book if all they intend to do is collect various information on the web and then present it like some kind of revelation.

Good overview of different sections of the world that will be adopting AI in the coming 20-40 years.
Any job that takes less than 5 seconds to think would be automated in the coming decade. While that would cause some jobs being displaced, there would be exponential growth in other departments.
Data is the new oil.

Great overview of Artificial Intelligence in simple English. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to know more about our future and how pretty much every industry will advance with this technology.

I also liked how he included several links and names of some technologies and courses. Thanks to him I found out about EDX platform to begin my own specialized learning experience.

Thanks! 5+

A good introductory to AI on it's use and implications. The book reads a little like a high school text book. Also the author couldn't resist putting in his own bias and seemed a bit preachy. But overall a fast and easy read with lots of references to other bodies of works if you wish to continue down the AI path.

Simple and jargon-free

Ideal 101 for AI, sans complex jargons and technicalities. Good read for beginners, intermediated and experts alike. Some of the examples may come across as overly simplified but that’s a minority

There are times when I have to admit that I just don't get it; I don't have enough understanding of a topic to really have an opinion or to be able to make an informed decision. Last week, both 60 Minutes and NBC (Richard Engel) had segments on artificial intelligence. I watched both and although both were well-done, I realized that my personal understanding was limited. Consequently, Artificial Intelligence: 101 Things You Must Know Today about Our Future went to the top of my read list.

Rouhiainen is an obvious supporter of AI but he does not dismiss the potential problems that AI can cause. Mostly, however, Rouhianen supports education and commitment on the parts of individuals, companies, and governments to establish a strong and fair foundation for the implementation of AI.

This book is written in a conversational style but there are tons of links and and an extensive bibliography so that readers can continue their information quest. He discusses how major companies like Facebook, Google, and Amazon, are currently utilizing AI and how they project to use it in the future. One of the best things he does is clearly define terms like "machine learning" and "chatbot." Rouhiainen does not focus solely on US companies since China, Saudi Arabia, India, and a few others are making dramatic inroads in technology. He is not an alarmist about international competition but he is very clear that stopping the growth and utilization of AI is impossible. Ethical standards and re-education of the workforce is essential.

Perhaps the biggest concern that the author outlines is the dramatic changes that AI will cause in employment. Many jobs and career strands will no longer be viable options for American workers. Self-driving cars, changes in financial methodology, health care delivery are just a few areas where AI has already made inroads and is projected to impact future employment. Are we preparing students for this new reality? What about those already in the workforce who have decades more of employment in front of them?

This book served as a great introduction to the topic.

In general, good book, I learned for myself new areas of application of artificial intelligence, how important the data and ability to analyze it is (data is new oil).
I found out how the financial sector can use AI to increase profit:
Better Customer Service — Through bots on social networks (Facebook, Telegram)
More reliable Investment Services with smart advisors, which will offer financial advice to customers.
Chatbots — Will become primary method of interaction with customers.
I did not like the fact that the author does not go deep into the topic.
I really liked the section about the change in the job market.
“Every job which takes less than 5 seconds to think will be done by robots.”
Long story short the largest companies in the world are striving in this direction and I share their vision regarding this topic.
I am quite sure despite obstacles in the way of this AI wave, our lives will be improved in many ways and in many industries.
We have to become a part of this revolution.
I gave it 4 out of 5 stars.

Officially the only book to actively remind me "Oh yeah, AI's gonna keep making life so much worse."

Oddly, the attempts to make me afraid of AI always expose the revolutionary possibility. It's this "Think of the advertising possibilities! Think of the policing possibilities! Think of the counter-terrorism!" that's like - right, we're fucked.

Screw Neo-Liberalism, to Hell with American Empire, and piss off, Lasse, you bourgeois sack.

Kirja käy kattavasti läpi aihepiiriin peruskäsiteet, ilmiöt ja joitakin sovelluksia. Tarjoaa varmasti paljon lukijalle, jolle käsitteet on uusia, mikä on varmasti kirjan päätarkoituskin. Olisin kuitenkin toivonut hieman enemmän uutta näkökulmaa tai syvällisempää otetta. Osittain kirjan ikäkin jo nyt haittasi, toimialan kehittyessä vauhdilla. Kuitenkin ihan ajatuksia herättävä teos

an ok, concise overview of AI advancements in our world. has tons of references that got me lost in them... probably the thing is about books like this that it become so easy for them to be outdated, so hopefully major updates from the writer will be expected soon!
