A dying game. A tournament for the ages. One last chance for glory.
After a glorious run as the world’s first full-immersion VR mega-game, Armored Souls is on its last legs. Competitors are on the rise, and the company’s own projects are surpassing it. In a last-ditch effort to inject new life into the game, Valhalla West announces a tournament with such an awesome prize that no player can resist.
Reggie has led Wounded Legion to the top ranks of the factions on the Armored Souls servers, but the game has gotten easy for him. Too easy. When Valhalla West announces their tournament plans, Reggie springs into action to prepare for it. His motives are twofold. First, it’s the most excitement he’s felt in years.
But more importantly, Armored Souls is Reggie’s entire world. He’s willing to fight to keep it going as long as he can.
Sgt King is bored. He's led the Wounded Legion across the Galaxy and made them the 5th largest faction in the Armored Souls game. He's stuck in a routine that no longer engages him...
...And then a system-wide tournament is announced. A chance to win a Valkyrie; a new medium-sized Mech that seems too good to be true. Oh, and there's some military units that have infiltrated the tournament too.
King gets Alpha Platoon back together and renames them Ghost Playoon for the competition.
The Ghosts pass through one round after another with lots of fun and exciting gameplay... and, of course, they win (why would a book be written from the loser's POV?)
Not a lot to get your teeth into in this one. There's plenty of action but no real consequences. I wasn't even that bothered by the prize of OP Mechs considering the rumours of Armored Souls being shutdown.
And what of June's death? We never did find out anything about that only that it happened and Ken didn't want June looking into the circumstances.
Oh, and the military infiltration too? Nothing came of that whatsoever.
There were several spelling errors in this book (took me a while to workout that Demotions expert is actually a Demolitions expert). Did pull me out of the flow a couple of times but the story itself was engaging enough.
Enjoyed it - 3 stars

The weakest book in the series, but still entertaining.
Most of the book is arena battles, and they're written well. The character development is good, but the plot is rather weak, with major elements mentioned in passing but never developed. The denouement is a bit trite and seems intended for a setup for a new series. (I don't see any evidence of such a new series, FWIW.)
In spite of the flaws and the weaker final installment, I would recommend the series. It's a snappy read and entertaining throughout. It's not a masterpiece, but it's a well-crafted ride.
I would have given this book a 6* rating of it was available. This has been a real page turner and has kept me engrossed right up until the end and the reboot! This is actually book3 in the series and hopefully not the last but it might be which would be a shame!
Loved the series. The main character went through a lot of hardship but never gave up.. A lot of mech fighting and action.. The plot was a little sad but really good!!! Very well told story. I'm hoping to see a fourth book?? The way this book ended I just Gota know what the heck happend when they were woken back up hundreds of years in the future
I was thoroughly entertained from start to finish. Another great ending in the series. This is my second series by this writer and I am a big fan! 👍🏽👍🏽
