An American Witch in Paris by Michele Hauf blends genres. I’ve seen it classified as a paranormal romance, a supernatural suspense, and an urban fantasy novel.

Ethan Pierce, a vampire that is tired of his Acquisitions management desk job, decides to do some field work. Tuesday Knightsbridge is a dark witch that he has kidnapped and brought to Paris. He needs her help to locate a specific demon who has stolen a book containing the code for the Final Days.

The interactions between Ethan and Tuesday start out as one would expect; volatile. Over the course of the book, readers learn some of their backstories. There are several supporting characters, but readers don’t get a lot of depth from them.

The world-building was okay, but it could have been almost anywhere, except near the end. Starting about halfway through the book, there are several very steamy scenes. The storyline and magic were what kept my interest. However, it ended up being rather predictable.

Overall, this was a light and enjoyable read, but it is not something that is very memorable.

Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own and are not biased in any way.

3.5 Stars → A straight-laced vampire and a saucy American witch come together in Paris to save humanity. Vampire Ethan and witch Tuesday are memorable leads, with an intriguing supporting cast aiding their perilous mission. The world-building and conflicts were exciting. I haven't read a paranormal romance in a long time, so this book was a lot of fun. One thing that didn't work for me was some of what Tuesday was saying or thinking didn't fit with a centuries-old witch. (Example: She would call troublesome men "Richards" instead of ... well, you know.) AN AMERICAN WITCH IN PARIS is loosely tied to others Michele Hauf has published with Nocturne, though it can easily be read stand-alone. Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for a review copy of this book.

Tuesday Knightbridge is a witch who wakes up in a cage and she’s a tad cranky. She’s been kidnapped by Ethan Pierce, director of Acquisitions, to help capture the demon Gazariel, who is in possession of a code that can bring about the End of Days. You know, that old chestnut. Anyhoo, Ethan must get the Code back and Tuesday’s connection to the demon is his only lead. They form an uneasy alliance, but as things go on, yep, you guessed it, adventure and romance happen.

The Good
This is my first Hauf book, and I enjoyed the ‘verse, and while there’s alot of worldbuilding, it kept my interest and made me want to check out some of her earlier books that clearly take place in the same ‘verse. The search for the Code brought several different characters into play and I enjoyed the times when Tuesday got to be her witchy self.

The Bad
I love a good sensual love story, and I love seeing that incorporated into a romance. Here, there is plenty of sex, but I had a hard time buying into the actual love. While the story takes some time to get going, I didn’t have a problem believing these two immortals were attracted to each other. However, the love lacked a spark, felt clinical and underdeveloped, and really only came into play when it was absolutely required. Without being spoilerish, there’s also a minor moment at the very end that irked me because it wasn’t really necessary except to prolong the finale.

Everything in Between
If there was one thing that could have taken the story to another level, it would have been to establish Tuesday and her curse earlier in the story and allow the reader to bond with her first. Since I was a newbie to this, I had no knowledge of Ethan, and that hindered my enjoyment/understanding of him, though it probably would be different if I’d read any of the earlier books. I felt as if I’d jumped in late in the game and didn’t know the game, or all the players for that matter.

description

I would say I liked it, though I enjoyed the search for the hunt for the Code portion of the story more than the romance. But if you’ve read the earlier books, and/or are into witches and urban fantasies/paranormals, you may enjoy this more than I did.

I have read a lot of books by Michele Hauf, and I've liked them all, loved many of them, but this one, this may be my favorite. I may say that after every new book by this author, but only because it's true. This book has everything I always love about her books - great characters, interesting story line, fascinating magic, beautiful imagery and sexy, steamy romance- and then taken up to the next level. Tuesday may be my favorite out of all the wonderful characters in Hauf's Beautiful Creatures world. And have I mentioned, this story is so, so sexy.

I loved this book so much!

If you like hot, sexy vampire/witch stories, you want this book.

This started out REALLY well. A vampire and a witch trying to locate a code book that can destroy all humanity from a demon; SO INTRIGUING, yet so boring. I would have given this book 1 star, BUT I love the cover.

First, this should of been a five star. In my opinion, I downgraded for two elements. One is the absolute amount of profanity from the witch , with some elements that did not make sense, and the other is the sex.
Having said that let me say this.
BUY THE BOOK! If you like paranormal romances it is definitely one to read. I skipped through the sex pages as it was not as impressive as the plot the characters and the way the story unfolded. I absolutely loved the way the author came up with such a wonderful plot line. I like the way she unfolded it adding characters without any problem and still making an absolutely wonderful story for those that are reading. A truly talented and gifted writer that had me captivated inside her story line. Buy the book and do not forget to get the first one ! This was a great read for those that like paranormal romances. I was given this book in return for an honest review. Anna Swedenmom

Tired of his day job, Ethan decides it's time for a more interesting occupation. This vampire may be ready for demons and blood magic but nothing could prepare him for Tuesday Knightsbridge. She's bold and the hottest woman he's ever met. She also happens to be a witch and the key to saving the world.

Be prepared for alot of sex scenes and swearing. ***

I don't really read romances for the sex scenes. I prefer the falling in love part of the story. Throw in the paranormal and it's perfect. So this one was a bit out there for me and what I usually read. The characters were awesome. I also really liked the authors writing style.

"Hauf's descriptions sparkle and her characters — as always — are lovely. Both Ethan and Tuesday are flawed yet very strong and likeable in their determination to save the world. The attraction between them also lights up the pages. The story is paced nicely and moves naturally to its conclusion. The budding relationship between Tuesday and Ethan develops naturally in the heat of their chase" (4 1/2 stars TOP PICK! @ RT Book Reviews).

The cleverly imaginative mind of Michele Hauf has once again created a paranormal story packed with originality and lots of unique characters. Her books that deal with anything supernatural are always innovative plus feature numerous individuals with often quirky personalities, and the latest story set in her Beautiful Creatures world is definitely extraordinary in numerous ways. I found myself smiling many times, and there was even some laughter which could not be contained. Ms. Hauf knows how to draw the reader into her unpredictable adventures, and the fascinating events in AN AMERICAN WITCH IN PARIS constantly kept me entertained.

As the administrator of the Acquisitions department, it is the duty of vampire Ethan Pierce to make certain everything necessary is retrieved in order to stop a demon from using a code with devastating consequences. If his nefarious plan is carried out, then no living being on earth would ever be the same. One particular witch is needed, and luckily Tuesday Knightsbridge has just been captured. Since her magic is dark, Ethan knows he must proceed with caution.

With the connection that the witch has to the demon, she is vital to keeping the Beneath creature from executing his scheme. Though Ethan has not worked in the field lately, he feels partnering with the witch should be his responsibility, so the two set out to find the troublemaker in Paris. As the vampire works alongside Tuesday, they discover their dislike for one another is not as great as first thought.

From the very beginning of AN AMERICAN WITCH IN PARIS, I was drawn into the lives of Ethan and Tuesday. According to the author, vampires and witches have a disturbing past history, and this fact influences how the couple react to each other quite a few times. Yet these challenges do not keep desire from building between them. When they unleash their passionate cravings, the encounters are very fiery because neither holds back. Love has been a fickle emotion for both Ethan and Tuesday, and they are definitely not looking for a permanent partner. Yet as they work together to save the world, they come to realize much about themselves and the other. Many of their conversations are filled with banter, and some of their retorts are very candid.

Any story that Michele Hauf has taking place in Paris is always descriptive, and I can easily visualize the factual sites. I especially like when a situation occurs in the catacombs beneath the city, as this is such an unusual place. There are a large number of secondary characters in the story, and many contributed crucial discussions along with some witty comments. How each one is portrayed gave me insight into the type of being they were, and the author made them truly distinctive. Ms. Hauf has more books planned for some of these individuals, and I am most eager to read them. There was also a big twist that I did not see coming, and it plays a huge part.

I voluntarily review a copy of the book, and all comments are my honest opinion

This was a very interesting book. Ms. Hauf's world-building is exquisite. The plot centers around a vampire who kidnaps a witch to assist him with a job he has to complete to save the world. The history surrounding the various paranormals is fascinating. With their backgrounds these two are the last people who should be together, and yet.....

I liked that the two did not just jump into bed, they actually learned a bit about each other first. The characters were well developed and very well rounded. Ethan and Tuesday worked. I liked that they were not perfect. There was attitude and fun, along with the craziness of dealing with various "others". The only issue I had was when Tuesday would say something and end her sentence with "yeah?", it completely pulled me out of the flow of the story.

I really enjoyed reading this story.

This was an interesting book. The writing style and character speech was a little strange. Making statements and then ending them with "yeah?" is a very weird way for someone to talk. Otherwise the plot was good. I will probably pick up this author's backlist.

An American Witch in Paris tells the story about the witch Tuesday Knightsbridge, cursed to never know true love, and Ethan Pierce, a vampire who's looking to capture the demon that cursed her. My inner 15 year old definitely picked out this book when I was browsing the shelves. Honestly, had I read it a decade+ ago I probably would have loved it more than my current self does.

The biggest problem is the dialogue. Tuesday talks like how teenagers are written by adults. She's too cool for school, is always hungry, and is defiant for defiant's sake. Eventually it gets to the point where every character has the same voice.

Then the writing. Characters constantly explaining things we already know. Every page has a character asking multiple questions in succession. Sometimes it felt like the author thought we'd question something and would try to answer. Like Ethan, internally questions why Tuesday wouldn't use her own phone for the GPS spell, but then reminds us that she was kidnapped from Boston. That's another thing that gets repeated ad nauseam. Words to expect to read a lot: Richard, clit, yeah, c*ck, pussy, folds, and accoutrements. Looking back the only well written scenes were the sex scenes. Everything else felt like it was just filler until the next time they boned, which is very often. The amount of times she describes her outfit reminded me of my days on mibba and quizilla, where the author would put meticulous detail into the characters appearance. Where it should read as a natural description, like describing a scene, it comes off as a grocery list.

A common thing you hear from bookworms is that when they finish a story they go into a sort of withdrawal. They become upset over the completion of a story that's captivated them for a good number of pages. That did not happen for me here. The characters didn't catch me. The storyline didn't hook me. There was nothing about this world that made me want to linger in it any longer.
