This is one of those books I started a few months ago (there are a lot of them) when I started my reading slump. For some reason I keep coming back to Jasmine Walt’s reverse harem, fantasy novels... Not to sure why, they are good, but not great, they do hold my attention most of the time and are very memorable. I look back to the “Dragons Gift” series and tell myself I loved it, but I don’t think I rated any of them a 5 Star. Hmmm... a mystery of the mind I guess, I will read the next one though. Because now that I’m balls deep I must know what happens next.

Maybe a full review on the actual book later. 😉

A very shallow, light introduction to the genre. Great if you are not concerned with a lot of feelings and just want a bit of story. There seems to be very little drawing the MC and her troupe together but a desire for magic.

There are only two guys for 98% of the story and then the last one shows up. Then its like "do you want to be a member of the club," and he's like "ya, cool" and then its "bang" between her legs and he's a member.

I really really liked this ....

I really really liked this, I’ll be honest I skimmed some here and there at the beginning, the beginning was a bit slow to me,too much time bogged in the MC’s heads and thoughts....
I honestly didn’t really begin to truly enjoy myself til they got away from the keep/castle and started to really work together as a team....
Now I liked how the MC’s didn’t just just into bed together but it wasn’t some slow ridiculously slow “burn” either, it as up fro t and honest and I liked that , ( btw I’ve start to hate the term “slow burn” because while I want sex to be built up too,no just randomly jumping into bed w/each other, I’ve had too many books using that term to feel like they were playing with wet matches”, not only was/is there no “Burn” AT ALL it doesn’t even feel like a match can be or is struck,no chemistry or even a true hint of romance ever really happens ) ( I’ve seen plenty that are calked a slow burn but the characters that are supposed to be involved don’t even act like they know they are supposed to be in a romance )....
Sorry.
Once the story really got going for me I loved it and couldn’t wait to see what would happen next though it seemed to hit quite a few slow spots where you wanted them to explore things around them s but more at times and they rushed along the towards the end we end w/ a bit of a cliffhanger because they stopped ab$ lingered when maybe they should have pushed on..
Riann is a bit too self sacrificing for my taste but Jasmine Walt has been writing some of the better RH themed romances out there since this became such an Uber popular sub genre...
I’d definitely recommend the “Dragons gift “ series, I tried the other with the ghosts and assaaaaaaasa, No I wouldn’t recommend it at all...
That definitely went into that weird “slow burn” list I was talking about earlier,where you might have and interesting story but you honestly can’t tell your reading a romance,no even the main characters act like they know , seeking to think about kissing each other one minute and pushing the other far far away from them the next....
Soo yes, I’d recommend but I’d also say try Tate James ( but not the books where she’s only a co-author) ( because I personally can’t recommend them ) but her Vixen series, Hell yeah!) and Amy Sumida)
Have fun and Thank you Ms.Walt

So this book has taken me longer to read than it usually would, not because I didn't enjoy it because I really did, but because that thing called life got in the way of my reading enjoyment and that makes me sad. This is a book which I could've quite easily read in one sitting if I'd been able to. It did take me a chapter or two to really get into the grip of the story but once I did I was captivated. This book is Jasmine Walt writing Urban Fantasy at her best (not that I've found any of her books so far to not be the best) however she's recently been co-authoring a lot of books which I've immensely enjoyed, but it's nice to have her back to writing in just her own style.
I loved the take on this story which involves a witch hunt. The book is told from several POVs which gives a good perspective into all the main characters thoughts. There is plenty of action and adventure in this book, there is also quite a bit of heat, oh my the level of the heat is scorching that I think my kindle was steaming. The romance and the passion between the main characters is a key part of the story, and also a enjoyable part, but be warned don't read in public if you get embarrassed easily 😉
I did enjoy reading this book and am looking forward to reading the next one in the series. Five stars for another great book from the author Jasmine Walt.

One of the best yet!

I have been following and reading his offer for some time. Excited to see her entering one of my fave genres but also her storytelling and writing gets better with each book. This story is fast paced and engaging from the beginning. I love the the harem is also so diverse and the men still feel ,naturally, some jealousy in the beginning. Can't wait for the next book!

* Interesting world
* MCs are a bit underdeveloped but they all have interesting backstories
/ okayish plot
- MCs relationships were rushed for no good reason
- The Mary sue-isim is over the top in this one.

I admit the first one-fifth into it is rather frustrating and painful to read. Now, make no mistake. I adore the author's writing style and later on the story itself. I guess it's the oppression and sexism theme going on at first that has almost made me run for the hills. Ugh, I hate the feeling of being restricted the most!

But anyway, after that unfair treatment to our main characters, I started appreciating the characters themselves and later on, the story, generally speaking. Tariel, the heroine, is longing for a family and for acceptance and it practically bleeds through the pages so it's such a sweet relief when she finally forms bonds with her harem.

I always enjoy the variety of men in a harem and this one is no different. Each man from the harem is counterbalancing one another, having a unique strength/quality on their own and at the same time filling up the weaknesses of the other.

I'm looking forward to the main characters' journey to the Empire, now that the harem has established. And I'm very curious as to what really is Tariel's parentage and history.

I would not suggest this book

I'll be honest, after so many good reviews I was inclined to ignore the bad and give this book a chance. I made sure I finished the book, hoping that it indeed live up to its praise. I regret to say it didn't.
There was little to no character development. By the end of the book I didnt know any of them any better then I had at the beginning. Besides their desire to get to (I dont even rememeber where they're going) and have a ridiculous amount of sex, none of them have substance. None of them react realistically, and their entire personality doesnt revolve around themselves but instead her magic and their incessant need to have sex.
I was disappointed and it took me a long time to finish, and I won't be getting the second book.

Tried to read this one but just couldn't get through it. Very boring, with an annoying main character, and weak, distant writing ("mulishly" I mean seriously?). Plus it has my least favorite trope ever, which is where all the guys want the heroine for some reason, while all the women are bitchy, mean, and jealous of her. Also the heroine is described as "exotic" which I thought everyone knew by now was not an okay way to describe people. But mostly the problem was that nothing really happened and the characters ranged from dull to annoying. Also the book has weird formatting. I think I just need to stop trying this author's books as none of them have worked for me.

This book was a nice debut for this reverse harem romance, set in a medieval time period. It was packed with steamy, thrilling, and suspenseful moments.

Trigger Warning: there is oppression, sexism, violence—especially men on women violence, and insinuations of both rape and suicide (the last being very subtle).

The plot: Tariel is the ward of an awful women. Presumed to be an orphan as she has no recollection of her parents, or any family for that matter, she lives her life in the castle, waiting to be married off to a man the Queen finds “suitable” for her. Because that is the life of a women where she resides: to be married to a man, suit his needs, and bare him children. Women of the court and the land barely bat an eye at this way of life, for that is how they were raised.

When she is set to finally marry a man, a man she most definitely does not want to marry due the stories and rumors of his treatment of women (not to mention his unpleasant appearance), she has to think of a way to escape. Especially because she possesses magic—forbidden in the land she calls home. Though ‘mage’ is the proper term, in Fjordland, women who possess magic (or suspected/accused to) are hung for the simple crime of being different.

With her mentor’s guidance, she finds a way—her only way—to potentially escape her deadly fate and gain the freedom of not only herself and her body, but to use her magic. But it doesn’t come easy. Gaining the help from two of the men she was most admired since her childhood—and they her—she manages to escape Fjordland and they begin their journey to the one place where women with magic are praised and cherished.

For the majority of the book, you will follow Tariel and her two men as they trek across the lands to their destination, fighting witch hunters, bandits, and other obstacles along the way.

The characters: Tariel is an amazing heroine to read about. Of course, she is the typical main character that is beautiful and highly sought after by the opposite sex, but she does not use this fact to her advantage, and that is important in a strong female character. She is also not the damsel in distress. She is headstrong, and a go-getter. She knows what she wants for her life and what she doesn’t. But she is also kind, caring, and sweet on her men.

Speaking of the men… they are great. They aren’t your typically hunky, bulky, men (not that there is anything wrong with that…). One is a knight, so he naturally is buff, blonde, beautiful. The other is a scholar, but with muscles of his own, though they may be leaner. They both have good hearts, become fast friends, and love Tariel without hesitation.

The romance: As stated in the synapsis, and in my first sentence above, this is a reverse harem (RH) romance, meaning the female has more than one male lover at the same time—and they love each other; not just lust (in most cases). This is a foreign concept for some, and if you cannot stomach the thought of a woman getting it on with two men at the same time… back away from the book! However, if you are intrigued by the concept, or familiar with it—dive right in because you won’t be disappointed! The romance is pretty fast paced in this book, so be prepared for that. The only complaint I have, I still enjoyed it though. The sex scenes happen often enough in the book but are immersed in the plot and happen for good reason (if you read, you’ll find out), but the sex doesn’t make up the majority of the storyline either which is nice. If you aren’t a fan of descriptive sex scenes, this isn’t the book for you.

If you are a fan of action/adventure, a medieval time period, the unknown, and a heroine that can hold her own? This may be the book for you.

Another very exciting series waiting for the fantasy and reverse harem fans.
Tariel is held in a foster care of Lady Tyrook, but her family could not care less. Her unusual looks and exotic Maroyan origin make her an ideal subject to witch hunts- even more with her deadly secret that she indeed has magic running through her veins. During the years, she tried to marry off and settle down far from her foster family wo only uses her, but the queen never gave her approval - until now. However, her husband-to-be is far from a desired match, being a pervert and murderer. Disgusted, Tariel calls for her only two friends in the castle - Riann and Calrain, and together they escape the trap of the castle only to fight for their lives on a deadly but exciting adventure.
The backstory resembling medieval times sets up a very promising environment for the story to develop in unexpected directions. Witch hunts, magic, guiding spirits, and steamy romance. One can find explicit sex scenes as much as detailed violence in the book, but if you are not too prudent to stomach it, I can guarantee you will enjoy the book and see those scenes as assets, as they move the story forward pretty quickly, with lots of suspense and action.
The storytelling is brilliant, smooth and with appropriate language to stream exactly the intended emotions on high levels. The world building is complex and detailed, with enough revealed to understand the story without problems and with enough left in the shadows to surprise the reader in the future.
I absolutely adored the characters. Each of them is different and unique, with certain strengths that combined together make them almost an invincible team. Tariel is the glue that binds the three totally different men together - Calrain with his bright intelligence and quick thinking, Riann with his strength and determination, and Itolas with his mysterious background and charming, flirtatious behaviour. Even their cultural diversity adds to the reading experience.
I can honestly say I cannot wait for the next book in the series!

Wonderful start to a new series! Would recommend if you are into reverse harems and adventures with magic...

What I love about this book is Jasmine’s ability to tell a story. It’s not just sex, sex, sex because it’s a reverse harem, there’s an actual story to it. Don’t get me wrong, there’s definitely sex in this book, but it doesn’t take up a large portion of the book like some authors do with reverse harems.

The characters and back story I enjoyed more than the Dragon’s Gift series. The story flows in all the right ways. I had a difficult time putting the book down and only did when I had to sleep (almost pulled an all-nighter on this one).

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Some spoilers below, you’ve been warned…
Tariel is a young lady living in a village under Lady Tyrook’s care. In this land, magic is considered witchcraft and witches are killed. Tariel’s problem? She can wield magic and somehow Sir Jerrold the witch hunter knows. Being forced to marry someone she doesn’t love or like, she embarks on an adventure to save her life with two friends, turned lovers, Riann and Calrain. From here, their adventures begin as they try to reach the Maroyan Empire where magic is revered.
What to expect in this book regarding sex and violence: fairly detailed sex scenes (reverse harem- if you don’t know what this is, look it up), Tariel needs sex to recharge her magic, the sex scenes flow smoothly, fighting and death with swords/daggers.
I look forward to this series, it is sure to be another hit for Jasmine! Would recommend if you enjoy reverse harems and magic. If you do not, this book is not for you.
The book does end in a cliffhanger, so beware for those hoping it’s a stand alone book.
*I received an advanced reader copy but also purchased the book because I loved it.
I've always been into harems so it's nice to see that the genre's gained popularity. Walt is a pretty good story-teller and while I haven't been a fan of some of her books, a majority of them have always entertained me with strong heroines in perilous worlds, fantasy or reality-based, which is why this balance of likes and dislikes makes it easier to check out her newest books. This would be one of them.
The world that Tariel is in was built pretty nicely. A lot of stuffy rich people in a super conservative, backwards kingdom that might as well segregate women and men. Then you have the other, more 'liberal' kingdoms who do the opposite of what Tariel's been raised to get used to. Things like that are always complicated, so it was a little hard to get into at first. Tariel and Riann's attraction was easy to slip into, her and Carlain's even more so. The cover is gorgeous and I love that it doesn't give anything away. I liked the surprises, the chase. At times, things felt a little lagging between the excitement and sex, but then again, they're all products of stuffy sexists so maybe things will heat up when Tariel's fit more into herself and her magic? It almost feels like we're getting them nice and raw, like when you first meet someone and then later in the next installment(s) you've suddenly realized just how much they've changed. Those are always cool. A few things were predictable, but I could totally see myself hanging out for more, so if you like fantasy and heroes vying for freedom, check it out.
The disclaimer in the description is true.
So when you read this it’s not a surprise of misplaced awkward lust.
(I skimmed most of these scenes, so take that with a grain of salt)
The sex scenes fit. It’s a absurd excuse to have so many. But I’ll allow it because this book is true to itself.
Now for the actual story. It was entertaining. I wanted them to succeed and get to their destination. I knew their would be obstacles and I think there were too many.
The names the author used keep bugging me. This is a book that uses a lot of made up names. That makes to story harder to read. I haven’t come across a book like this is a long while. And in the past I would just not finish. So since I was able to finish this with the irritating pronoun usage was somewhat ignorable.
Calrain was not utilized to his full potential. He’s this impressive scholar and it’s clear his limits were the authors limits.
The was also one of those books with strange and inconsistent font/italics usage.
I give four stars because it kept my attention. And other than the annoying made up names I liked the story.
Liked the story so far...
I really enjoyed the world building. Both societies that are the focus of this story are fantasy, but are influenced by actual civilizations. Ideological aspects are thrown in as well. One society is free and embraces magic, while the other burns "witches" at the stake. The latter being the entire motivation of the antagonist in the story.
In the beginning of the story, the 3 main characters start out in similar predicaments. Stuck in their positions, held back from their true potential, both of the male characters are in love with Dareena, and she holds affection for them. Circumstances beyond Dareena's control force her into a betrothal with a pig-man, which causes the three to band together into a very unconventional relationship so they can escape.
The purpose of the harem seemed to fit the story, and was believable. Adding the jealousy aspect made it even more so. Also, there are plenty of detailed descriptions of some very adult situations. If this sounds like something you'd be into, I recommend you pick it up.
Tariel is a half-breed with magic that she is trying hard to hide and suppress. When her vindictive warden tries to marry her off to a hideous man who beats and seems to kill his wives she realises her attempts to fit in have been worthless and she will have to escape and finally embrace her magic. She has her two best friends (one a knight and one a scholar) and a desert spirit to help and guide her in her escape. However the deadliest witch hunter his on the hunt for her and they ned to find some way to avoid him if they want to find her destiny.
Wow - I felt so very sorry for Tariel and the way her life was. He life was so hard and as much as she tried to fit in nothing seemed to work. I could definitely empathise with her and feel all the thoughts and emotions she was going through. Hurrah for her two friends who stepped up and did everything they could to help and protect her. A great start to the series and I can't wait to see what happens next to Tariel and her men.
Okay. I love Tariel. She's amazing. She's gorgeous. Men lust after her. Women are jealous af of her. Yep, and she knows it. She even flaunts it. Muahahahaha! Also, did I mention, she's my favorite. I love her knowledge in medicine and her usage of her mage powers. She'd better be the best. I want her to be the best at everything.
Also, she deals fantastic damage to the f***ing Witch Hunter. Hell with him! I hope he has some more scars and worse in death.
But most of all, the romances are healthy! I love the healthy love between Tariel and her lovers. She's so cute when she's around them and I love it! Thank Goodness for this book! Or I would've pulled my hair out with another Twilight ripoff or Fifty Shades.
In Fjordland, where Tariel lives, magic is forbidden, witches are hunted, and using magic comes with a horrible death sentence. Anyone with a grudge or is jealous of another woman can call her a witch and the famous witch hunter will capture and burn them. Tariel must flee and the witch hunter is on her tail. How far can she get? How will she escape the famous witch hunter? This book has action, danger, magic, knights, a determined witch hunter, romance, battles and suspense. This is a great book to settle in, put your feet up, and get taken to another world with castles, knights and magic!
As usual a great story!
I really enjoyed this book. It has interesting story line, so I am looking forward to the next episode. I love the intrigue of who is Tarial and is she really a princess? More on that mystery to come, I'm sure. Adding a third man to the harem has increased her power, so could get interesting as they get to the capitol and try to continue to the Empire. Oh and what happened to Sir Jerrold the witch hunter? So much excitement and lots of questions. So ready for Den of Thieves in March. Off they go to find Riann! Hurry up next book! Another good read by Jasmine Walt. I always look forward to the next!
This was my first RH read and since I was unsure about the subgenre, I wanted to try it with an author that I already enjoyed. And I was super pleased! I don't want to give away any spoilers, but you can always count on walt to build a world that sucks you in and makes you want to stay. Her characters are unique, funny, and endearing and I can't wait to see what happens next. If you're looking for a great fantasy adventure with a strong female lead and a sexy and exciting storyline, you will love this book!
ARC - I voluntarily offered to review this book with no obligations and my opinions are honest!
Magic in Fjordland is forbidden and punishable by death.
Tariel does not know who her parents were, but she has magic in her veins.
Her only option is to flee to the Empire.
Magic is wielded freely in he Empire.
With her three companios, Riann + Calrain + Yarim, they set out on a perilous journey.
Will they reach the Empire safely?
I loved this book 1, and I can't hardly wait for book 2.
I could hardly put the book down. So Good!
The storytelling + the character build were awesome!
Another smash hit from a favorite author. We get a half-breed mage, raised in a country that kills anyone with magic. Added to that is she needs a harem of men to awaken her abilities, the first two she chooses, she grew up with and her last one is an exile from the land where she's headed. Her birth parents are unknown but she bears a strong resemblance to the half-breed Prince. The book ends in a cliffhanger when one of her men is captured by bandits, now I have to wait on pins and needles for the next book.
I received an ARC of this story and have voluntarily chosen to review it here.
I love Jasmine's books and this one was awesome. I loved the way it focused on a slightly different story line and it was great. I loved how the book flowed and i read it in about an hour. I would've liked it longer. I really love reading reverse harem books and this one didn't disappoint. There was enough steamy action in it without it being OTT. Also direct to the point action, using vocabulary that we use in everyday life. I'm so glad there is going to be 5 books in the series and i cannot wait until the next one. Keep up the good work Jasmine :D
I'm always in awe of Jasmine Walt's world building, but this first in a new series is especially interesting and well written. It's a novel that will transplant you into her world. If you are a fan of reverse harem novels, this one's for you. Each of the male characters brings something unique into the relationship, and you are left with a feeling that together they really complete each other. Grab your favorite beverage and sit down to read this enchanting book.
A Mage and Magic
In a country where having magic is a death sentence, burning at the stake to be exact. On mage must escape a terrible arranged marriage and a country that would persecute her if they New she had magic. Her childhood friend and first love help her escape and to avoid the magic hunter and his knights. The world and characters created in this story is immersive and captivating. Can’t wait for the next book!!
Loved it!! I started and finished this in one night, I was soo hooked. The characters seem real and pop out of the story--It makes you feel like you are right there in the action with them. I caught myself wanting to yell "Watch out!" (just like I was watching a horror movie and the bad guy was right there). I am curious where the story leads and I want to know more about the desert spirt and How many magical gifts does Tariel have?
Another great series by Jasmine Walt. Tariel was such a likeable mc. She just wanted to escape from the people who treated her poorly and marry someone who could love her. Rian and Carlian were perfect for her. They both brought something different and were willing to give up everything for tariel. The world was so interesting with the different cultures thoughts on how women should be treated. I am very excited to see where the next book goes.
Ms. Walt usually writes slow burners. I have enjoyed many of her other series. Her characters have a depth that bring out many emotions from her readers. I heard this would not be a slow burner and it is not. She has the sweet intense slow love, but has not added in an intense, ghost pepper hot, sexy love. The reader can also see the depth of love which knowing the writer will be equal. I can not wait for the next book!
Exciting new RH
I loved this book! Tariel is a strong MC along with her men. Riann is my favorite he is so sweet and caring even though he is a big knight. The storyline is exciting, I love a good quest and I like that it is based in a Medieval type setting. The cliffhanger makes it so I can’t wait to read the next book.
