I admit the first one-fifth into it is rather frustrating and painful to read. Now, make no mistake. I adore the author's writing style and later on the story itself. I guess it's the oppression and sexism theme going on at first that has almost made me run for the hills. Ugh, I hate the feeling of being restricted the most!
But anyway, after that unfair treatment to our main characters, I started appreciating the characters themselves and later on, the story, generally speaking. Tariel, the heroine, is longing for a family and for acceptance and it practically bleeds through the pages so it's such a sweet relief when she finally forms bonds with her harem.
I always enjoy the variety of men in a harem and this one is no different. Each man from the harem is counterbalancing one another, having a unique strength/quality on their own and at the same time filling up the weaknesses of the other.
I'm looking forward to the main characters' journey to the Empire, now that the harem has established. And I'm very curious as to what really is Tariel's parentage and history.
