JONAH is the prophet for a God who refuses to speak. Frustrated with his beloved Israel's complacency, he's desperate for the resounding voice from heaven to renew his own calling and committment to the righteous ways of his ancestors. Until God does speak. Disobedience is Jonah's only option to the command he's been given. Despite the dire consequences, he won't sharpen a sword destined to strike his own people.
MICHAL is the prophet's wife, but not the woman he loves. She tries to be all he needs but can't replace her sister, the woman of Jonah's past. Disappointment clings to the dark shadows of her soul. So does a secret that she can never reveal. One morning Jonah is simply gone and MIchal's stability is threatened. When a solution is provided, she must choose whether to listen to the quiet whispers from the heavens, or ignore them. The fulfillment she craves is within her grasp. But is it truly hers to take?
Ok so who doesn’t love the book of Jonah in the Bible? My small group and I just had a discussion on how dramatic he was, 1st running to Tarshish because he didn’t want to follow God’s command to tell the Ninevites of their doom, knowing they’d repent and God would save them, getting swallowed by a “giant fish,” becoming a super white man, then when the Ninevites repented he just yelled at God “I just want to die!” He was a little dramatic! But I love this story, we don’t know much about Jonah’s life outside of running, the fish, and Nineveh. But Rachel S. Neal did a wonderful job weaving together a story about his life, why he hated Nineveh and his home life. Also going into detail how the people in his life felt when he left. No matter how dramatic Jonah was, his book in the Bible does show how God loves everyone he created, His Mercy and our need for repentance. It’s a story of hope, and Rachel S. Neal shows it through the entire book! I also appreciated her notes at the end, I always love the notes the author writes, Rachel encourages you to go to the Bible to fact check her story, which is wonderful! Any good Biblical Fiction author will lead you to the Bible!! Overall, excellent story, and thank you for bringing Jonah to life for us, and giving us a look into this dramatic man’s possible life!!
This book is unusual, not only in the characters that it portrays in the story, but also the way it was written. It seemed to be really from three main points of view, with a fourth thrown in there occasionally. While I found that unusual, the author is talented in her way to doing it and kept me reading. I don't know that I have maybe read one biblical fiction story of Jonah, so this was different in that as well. I found each turn in the story to be a fascinating take on the biblical tale, for example, I never thought of what the "big fish's" stomach juices could have done to his hair. I loved how she created characters that you both understood Jonah's hate for the Assyrian's as well as felt sympathy for them on the other end. I would recommend if you enjoy unique biblical fiction, to check this one out.
I love her detail to the everyday life and times of biblical characters. I never gave a lot of thought to Jonah running from God or why he did. As she says in the book, God would not ask you to do something He already knows you will do. Boy oh boy, have I given that a lot of thought.
I love how the dai!y lives of the Biblical people might and could have been. She brings you right into that time period and makes really feel for what they are going through. Love her books!!!
Another wonderful book by Neal. I love her imagination and realism. Also, this story (and most of her books) focus on married couples working through life, not the romance.
This book looks at what disobeying can cost, and what God redeems. The setting and characters are vivid and detailed.
This is a realistic fleshimg out of the tale of Jonah in the Bible. The known parts are true to the Word of God. The unknown parts are plausible and Characters well drawn. Well written Rachel
This was an eye opening writing about the book of Jonah, fro his wife's perspective along with his. Biblically accurate, relatable, developing characters, and culturally well base, it was a wonder read. I highly recommend it!
