What if the bad guy turns out to be your hero? After her boyfriend dumps her, Lea learns he’s been cheating on her… with her best friend. To make matters worse, she discovers her mother’s plan to remarry—and Lea needs to meet the man in her mother’s life. Over dinner, he makes it clear he disapproves of everything about Lea’s life.
Just when she thinks things can’t get worse, her stepbrother shows up late…
…and pulls her in for a kiss on the lips.
He says he’s doing it for her, but she’s convinced he does everything for himself. He’s a jerk. Selfish. Self-centered. Self-absorbed. So why does her body crave him? Why won’t her heart slow down when he’s around? And why can’t she fight the so wrong, yet so right need to be the one in his bed?
A Valentine Step is a standalone novella of about thirty thousand words. No cliffhangers, lots of steam, some dirty language, and a HEA.
DNF @ 31% because I fucking hate every single character.
- Lea: no backbone whatsoever. Stop apologising for other people's shitty behaviour! You deserve to take up space! Also, can you stop going on about your weight, your kale salad, and your skinny, cheesecake-eating friend? You're triggering me.
- Trever "Wild": has there ever been a less wild name than Trevor? It just makes me think of Neville Longbottom. Only Neville spelled his toad's name right... Also, where does this guy get off? He's vulgar. He's stalkery. He expects to always get his way with women. He fears gold diggers but splashes the cash all over the place, like it excuses his shitty behaviour.
- Jen: what kind of shitty excuse for a best friend has an affair with her friend's partner? And blatantly, in front of her, to add to the humiliation? And to flirt with another guy too, so it's not even like she's in love with him. She literally tells us she gets off on being evil. Scum of the earth, I swear.
- Luke: see Jen. Also, he gets all macho possessive when someone kisses the woman he betrayed. Uh, fuck you dude. His was the nadir: "you gay little cunt, why are you kissing my girlfriend?" I barely even know where to begin in unpacking that.
- The (step) dad: he basically tears Lea to shreds in the restaurant for the crime of... wearing jeans to a nice restaurant? Not yet having chosen a career path? Quelle horreur! Also, secretive and possibly controlling.
- The mom: pushy, never backs up her daughter, or even really listens to her.
- The waiter: Yes, I even hated the waiter. Why are you still flirting with a woman who insulted you to your face, just because she's pretty? And don't even try and tell me it's for tips. Why not flirt with both of them then?
And to cap it all off, the spelling and grammar were decidedly mediocre.
It’s all relative. Well, kinda. Listing after your possible step-brother isn’t a crime, right? After a crappy breakup with her boyfriend and best friend Lea falls right into her step brothers arms. This is a sweet story about persistence and how far you’re willing to go for the ones you love.
The book is just ok. It missed connections and just expected the reader to accept that they were suddenly in love. There was not enough meat to the pertinent areas of the story. It’s cute though, so if you are looking for a cute reasonably uncomplicated read, and won’t mind some questions at the end, this is perfect.
The heroine is a doormat. Her best friend sleeps with her boyfriend, but it’s okay. Let’s just let it go and stay friends. Why even put that in the plot and make it a big deal if it’s just going to be glossed over?
I love this story so much. First time reading anything by this author and will definitely read more from this author. A few grammatical errors, but not enough to take you completely out of the story.
Fun read and different from most step brother books. Characters were sweet and the plot came together. Wish Trever was explored more. Felt his story was missing background. But I enjoyed the book.
I enjoyed this story, and will admit that it was a little different. There were a couple scenes that didn't flow well together, but overall it was well written. I agree with other reviewers that Lea was a bit of a push over, but let's be honest... nice people are. She didn't want to hurt others, even when they hurt her, yet, she did stand up for herself as well. I loved that Trevor was a tad on the stalker side, but he also would back off and let her deal with the situations.
