Willows in the End

Rate this book
When a government-mandated vaccine to eradicate crime goes awry, twenty-year-old Grace must navigate a sea of monsters, both living and undead, while making sense of her own deeply troubled existence. As she grapples with newfound truths, the frothing mouths of the brutal new world push her to her breaking point.

Good thing for Grace, you can’t break someone who’s already broken.

But the End has changed Grace for the better. She’s growing stronger every day, and softer. There are people who need her, and she’s lost too much to let them slip away, too. In The End, what matters most is finding each other, and living to love another day.

Christina L. Rozelle is the author of the bestselling YA Dystopian Scifi series, The Treemakers Trilogy, which includes her groundbreaking debut, “The Treemakers,” and its sequels, “The Soultakers,” and “The Seeker’s Keys.” Hailed for its strong, believable, and relatable characters, original and complex plotting, and phenomenal world-building, The Treemakers Trilogy appeals to lovers of dystopian literature who are looking for something refreshing and new.

Rozelle’s writing roots sprouted with poetry and prose in countless journals in her early years, continuing through her tumultuous teenage years, and well into her turbulent young adult life. Though her younger self dreamed of scribing non-fiction and poetry someday, when she discovered the magic in creating fiction she never looked back. Overcoming countless obstacles of her own, the wisdom gained along her personal path through healing breathes life into her beautifully dark, yet hopeful tales of triumph. Filled with an array of emotional triggers, not many topics are off limits in her works. Rozelle’s exceptional storytelling dives deep into the survival and growth journeys of diverse, broken characters and unlikely heroes. Authentic, gritty, intricate, and wildly imaginative, her stories also offer hope—a light in the dark—as her characters discover their own inner strengths and worth in the midst of debilitating adversity.

Though her wanderlust calls her to a nomadic life of traveling the world in planes, trains, ships, and RVs, Christina happily resides in a small town in Colorado, USA, with her children.

This unique story both breaks your heart and gives you hope at the same time. It is a heart wrenching, complex, totally absorbing tale that takes your breath away. There is so much action, suspense and emotion in this book that it’s hard to describe just how good of a story it is. Grace/Ophelia is a flawed, amazing character that struggles to survive her own demons as well as the surrounding world. Her relationships, losses, strength and personal battles leave you astounded and amazed. The author shows well the darker side of humans; the secrets, twists and brutality will take your breath away, nothing is held back. It’s a story that’s not for the weak of heart but one that will capture your heart and leave you wanting more. I can not wait to read the next book in the series. I received an early copy under no obligation to review. This in no way influenced my review and all opinions expressed are solely my own.

Loved this book, not your normal zombie read. I loved following grace though her journey and watching her battle her demons, and being able to overcome the mental struggles even in a dead world there's still hope.
They are not just fighting the dead, but also the living and their own demons. we are also introduced to some new pretty kick ass characters that all pull together and become more then just another survivor in Graces world. Grace loses some and finds love and family in people she never thought shed see again. This installment takes twists and turns I was not expecting. The ending really shocked me, I wont say anymore you'll have to just read the book and find out what surprises are at the end.

THis was an amazing surprise for me! An enchanting epic in the best tradition. It sucks you in, Keeps you enthralled from start to finish! With quality writing, adventure and characters you can believe in, it's a can't miss read! The main CHaracter, Grace, Struggles with her inner demons to find her way into a better place with strength, courage and True Heart! Her past took her to a dark world of pain and trauma but she finds her way step by step. It broke my heart, choked me up and left me with the kind of hangover only the best books can create!

Heartbreak and hope

Heartbreaking and lovely and rough around the edges.  In a dystopian tomorrow I believed in Grace.my heart broke with Grace's and was mended  and torn back out shred by shred.  Amidst the chaos, the calm,  the drugs and children the fear and the strength Grace continues to fight.  Be prepared to feel all of the things that Grace feels. Trust in those she hopes are on her side and even if they are not, she finds she cares about them. Now to hear what Gideon has to say.

Oh. My. God!!!! These characters and this story have sucked me in from the start. This is not my genre or even close and I seriously couldn't put this book down and I can't stop thinking about the characters and wondering how the story will end. The writing is wonderful and so descriptive that I found myself feeling like I was in the story living and running right along with Grace and Gideon. Thank you Christina Rozelle for writing a book that opened my eyes to a new genre. I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.

So much more than a zompoc book!!! This book is a life changing journey, the most beautiful blossoming flower that just happens to be set in a zombie apocalypse.
Willows in the End is 3 books come together as one, the way they belong. They were awesome as 3 individual books, but there is just so much that happens, so much depth, so much soul changing, life giving heart that is all part of one continuous story, they really belonged together.
Ophelia is a broken soul, life has not been kind to her, she is a hardened shell of who she really is and coping with her life the only way she knows how, through anger and blocking people out. Then the government has a great plan to make the world a peaceful place, which is always a sure sign something is about to go wrong.
We now enter a zompoc world so brutal, you wish the zombies were the only problem you had to face. But through it all, Ophelia's eyes are opened to things she never saw before, a way to look at life that she had never realized. With the end can come a new beginning. This story will rip your heart out, stomp on it, then pick it up and cradle and nurture it, give it hope again, only to toss it back out the window and picked up later by another ride that will blow your mind. But in the end, hope is all we have, and Ophelia... Grace may just take that hope and turn it into everything.
A beautifully tragic story of growth and self acceptance, a finding of ones self through the worst circumstances. A story of survival that is about so much more than just staying alive, but about finally living.
Truly one of my all time favorite books. Tho this is a dark story, there is so much beauty to be found here! So many moments of true, soul crushingly beautiful moments. I read this book through many tears. Grace is a real character in my heart, a person I have grown to love and respect and is alive in my mind. I see myself in her and some of her heartbreak. This story is written so well and with so much depth, heart, and emotion, you can't help but connect to it and be moved by it. And with that said... bring on Ravens in the End!

I will start off stating this is not my normal type of read, I am not a big fan of romance or erotica.
The Author was responsible in rating the book as NA,(Mature content would be a good label for it.) there is also a mature content warning in the description.
The Government had mandated that everyone 21 and older get vaccinated. With the exception of a few groups like Military personnel, Police officers ect. The vaccination was supposed to eliminate crime. There was going to be a 1,000 dollar fine per day for those who refused. Those who wait for longer than two weeks to get vaccinated after the 21st birthday would be punished severely.
The main character is Grace Vincent 20yrs old (Ophelia) she is fighting some major inner demons and is filled with regret Her friend Lucy Davison 19yrs old (Eve)Her parents didn’t think Grace was a good influence on her. She didn’t like guns so she never got her permit till she was 18 when most everyone else got theirs at age 16.
Gideon Tyler 27 yrs old. He seemed like a nice guy. You would never guess the lengths he would go to, to save a friend.
The characters were flawed and well written, Mrs. Rozelle paints a good image of the background where the story takes place and there is plenty of conflict in this story. One of the supporting characters I really liked was Murray, he was an older man doing the right thing in a deprived world the second book in this series will be more of his story I believe.

Follows Grace & Gideon, they meet and team up with Logan and Missy. Gideon is hunted and nabbed by his brother's henchmen. Crud and rough around the edges. Same as in book one.

Tunnels and Planes

Gritty, laden with adult content, sex and drugs.
If it weren't for bad luck, they'd have no luck at all.
Grace, Missy and Logan had made it to the underground city safe from the Zombies. Gideon had been right about the Tunnel City being a safe haven...or was it? Things are seldom what they appear to be most of the time in this new world.
Anything you want is available and can be had in this new city, for a price. Everyone in this community has an ocular profile and there is no need for money as they work on ration points system. Points equal currency. You can work or take part in a verity of actions to earn points. The more depraved the act, the more points you earn.
Grace has her shackles up in this place and she has gotten a few subtle warnings. She is going to uncover the mystery this place holds. She finds that the man she thought ran this place is not the puppet master after all. She also uncovers the truth about herself and her value for the saving of the human race.
Christine Rozelle has done it again creating a gripping novel. With complex characters and a deceptively inviting world for the unexpected.

"The only time you can be brave is when you're scared. You told me that, remember, Phelia?" (Zelle, 145).

Willows in the End is a hardcore post-apocalyptic novel following Grace as she navigates the world after a mandatory 'anti aggression' shot called mindset turns everyone over the age of 21 into vicious, flesh eating, undead bodies.

The book starts off with a typical day in Ophelia(Grace)'s life; school, drugs and worship. We get a glimpse of exactly what Ophelia experiences in her day to day, including her past.

This novel is extremely graphic, including sexual violence, abuse, an extreme amount of drugs, and lots of sex. As hefty as the story is with this type of content, I was still able to focus on the main story line and appreciate what was being written.

I will be honest, I was quite thrown off with the main character, Ophelia(Grace). The amount of drugs being taken by her and the choices that she was making sent me in a spiral of anger and resentment. What kind of message was she sending not only to the people around her, but to the children she would encounter? I then made the realization that if a character was making me feel this strongly, it's because she was written RIGHT. The fact that Ophelia's actions were able to make me feel means she was a fantastic 3 dimensional character, and I truly believed all of her actions, truly felt them as opposed to reading them.

The other characters were also well made, especially Evie. She is an influential teen, a true testament to how easy it is for a teenager to be convinced into doing something.

The theme that I got from this story is that whatever doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Grace(Ophelia) struggled with her past, and eventually came to the realization that the bad things are what made her strong. This is such a powerful message, especially evoked through a teenager.

The story was absolutely gripping. There are breaks throughout the novel to help with pacing, and that makes the long story bearable. As with her other novels, Rozelle did an amazing job with pacing and giving each and every event its moment.

This is the first 18+ novel I read, and I will say that I quite enjoyed it. The graphic parts bring out the real world into view, and I think those are things that are important to talk about. I think it added to the story, making it even more realistic and bringing real issues into view.

While this novel had its ups and downs, it kept me enthralled from start to finish, and I am truly invested in Grace's fate. Rozelle did a wonderful job with her NA debut. This novel has an amazing story and I look forward to delving into the next novel, Ravens in the End. I give this book 5 out of 5 stars.

Ms. Rozelle has done it again! I loved every minute, and I need more!

Dysphoria and Grace
At first I was a bit skeptical. Not of the story, but it was a bit too real for me. I read mostly to escape reality, and here it is right in front of me. But the story is too good to put down! So I set aside my feelings, and concentrated on it. If I didn't need sleep, I would have devoured it in one sitting! I may have teared up in some parts, ok, I cried! Denial, love, loss, happiness, they're all in here. A great read if you ask me!

Wow. I never thought the apocalypse could be so steamy!

Grace and Gideon continue to survive in a world plagued with walkers that were accidentally "created" by the government. They continue to hide in the shadows, running from the walking dead and the "Suits". Little does Grace know, Gideon is keeping something from her, and it's not what she's thinking.

Murray's Law
A very well thought of plot, and I couldn't stop reading! If I had a full day to myself, I would've devoured it in one sitting. I NEED the next one so bad! Just remember that this is a work of fiction. An escape from reality. I know if my mom read this, she is going to react to some of the scenes. Keep an open mind. I admit that I cringed at some, but if you get past them, you'll truly enjoy the read as I did.

Tunnels and Planes
Ok. This might be better than the last one! Now they have entered an almost perfect place, but of course something isn't right! When is it ever? Haha! At least now they aren't running and avoiding walkers and drones. Or are they?

The Tunnels is where most of the survivors are right now. They have a system in place that takes care of everyone. They have a point system instead of money for goods and services, and to earn those points, of course you have jobs. It might seem like a reprieve from the old world, but Grace feels that there is something hiding beneath the surface. And boy, was she right! They are all separated by dorms and sectors, and you do not have access to all. What are they hiding?

Follow Grace, Logan, and Missy in their new adventure in the Tunnels! The action towards the end will not disappoint! Talk about cliffhangers though! The torture we have to endure from Ms. Rozelle is bittersweet!

I read this book when the three parts were three books. Here are my reviews of each separate part.

Dysphoria and Grace:
Wow, this was one crazy story but very well written! New America is requiring those of the age 21 and over to get a shot that suppresses a gene for one to fight and be evil. The only ones that are exempt are the ones of the law that would supposedly protect us. Ophelia (Grace) was adopted and hates the parents that adopted her, she turns to drugs and alcohol and falls for her best friend Eve (Lucy). But high on acid one night, did they really witness a massacre or were they just hallucinating from the acid. And to top that off, the shot that was given out seems to have some weird side affects. Will Ophelia and Eve make it out of this before things go from bad to worse? Can't wait to read the next book in this series!

Murray’s Law:
Gideon and Grace are now living at wipeout trying to live in these dark times. One thing I didn't like was that once they found out that Grace was pregnant, she still smoked, did drugs and drank. I realize this isn't the ideal world to bring in a child but still don't try to sabotage the child and make it come out with more issues then they're already going to deal with. I enjoy their relationship but along the way, they meet Logan and a little girl Missy. I can't decide if I want Grace to be with Logan or Gideon. Gideon is full of lies and Logan says it like it is. With the suits out looking for survivors will the four of them all make it to the tunnels safely? Can't wait to find out what happens next!

Tunnels and Planes:
Now in the tunnels, there's more going on down there then they really know. But will Logan and Grace figure out the truth before it's too late? Loved learning with them all what is really going on and which characters know the truth and who's good and who's bad. Can't wait to learn what will happen next in this new world. Will anyone make it out and will Gideon come back? I still can't figure out why he would have sent them to the tunnels.

5 Post Apocalyptic Stars for Willows in the End

I have no idea where to begin to review this. Perhaps by reiterating that it is an adult read, and does contain violence, drugs, rape, murder, LGBTQ and other unpleasantries that come with apocalyptic scenarios. It is not a book that all will embrace for those reasons, but if that won't scare you off, this is a must read. Without hesitation it is the best post apocalyptic book I have read. Though they have never been my favorite genre, I read many when my kids were middle school aged or so and were into that.

The book can be gritty and bleak, but the underlying hope never truly wavers. There are heartbreaking, ugly cry passages, but there are also very heartwarming ones. Ms. Zelle has such a wonderful way with words, making all of the characters and circumstances so very real feeling. Not only do you build bonds with various characters, you can picture them in your head and definitely "see" many of the places, even if they aren't necessarily rooted in a reality we can grasp.

This is book one in a series, and book four will be out in January (2022). Events in my personal life kept me from this one when it was first published, but I am kicking myself for not catching up sooner, and I am looking forward to delving deeper before the next release. Even though it is stupid late/early (3 am-ish) I plan to start book 2 tonight because I just can't wait to see what is next.

Highest recommendations for the right audiences. You truly don't have to love dystopian fiction to get completely lost in the world Ms. Zelle has created, but an open mind is probably required.

The energy in this apocalyptic story grabs you and holds on tight. Our main character is not your usual shining star who does everything good and right. She has a heart but is afraid to let it out for fear of being hurt. This story shows you some of the dark side of human nature so be warned that this might not be for everyone. Grace is just trying to survive day by day in an unstable world. It is hard for her to know what is right and what is wrong when it’s the end of the world as she knew it and the rules no longer apply. You will experience a wide array of deep emotions while reading this book. Sadly tragic and truthful making for a fantastic read. Well written and makes you think long after turning the last page.

It is just wrong, the whole thing, absurd really!
Starting with the untested vaccine and how everybody took it at once and only over 21, because those 80 year olds are really violent; and then how everybody wants to get high even though there are zombies everywhere and there is no need to stay alert at every step; and last but not least, the reason for all this : so men can have submissive women for sex!

So yeah, there was a lot of suspending my disbelief :)

The intense action and ability to connect with the main character, Ophelia/Grace, had me on the edge of my seat. I love the unique twist on the run of the mill zombie story...the characters, major and minor, fit perfectly into the world created through fierce writing and the capability to tackle sensitive topics with no fear.

I read this first as the individual books and then re-read it as Willows in the End. I was expecting to skim through since I read it before but I thoroughly re read the whole thing. This book grabs you and does not let go. You are torn apart by Grace's evolution. I personally am a huge fan of dystopian fiction, of the slight terror of what could be and Willows captures it perfectly... between the effects on society and the individual.... I couldn't put it down....twice.

Wow! Christina L. Roselle is a now favorite author of mine. Fantastic writing skills!
This story is so beautifully written, gritty, dark, witty and emotional. The authors touched places that like to be kept in the dark. In-depth character development and world building.
You never know how strong you are until the world as you know it comes to an end.
Grace/Ophelia is such a strong but damaged character. And in spite of/ or maybe due to all she's been through, her character evolves. Her journey to self-realization is torturous and I was crying along with her for her losses and her regret.
I really am anxious to see where the next book takes both her and I.
When worse comes to worse you have to choose to either let it defeat you or rise to the occasion.
Grace is the constant through it all. Her strength and fortitude astounds me after everything she's endured.
Pay heed to the warnings this is a dark and raw dystopian read.
I'm loving this unique story full of non-stop action and suspense. Oh, and we can't forget about the steam! (Winks)

Willows in the End is a wonderful rewrite of three previous books- Dysphoria and Grace; Murray's Law; and Tunnels and Planes. It's hard to believe that the author could make these three books better but in combining them, the story is much more cohesive.
This is Grace's story. A story of unbelievable hardship in such a short lifespan. She's only 20 years old but doesn't know how to love or trust. She was adopted but was broken beyond repair long before these parents tried to love her. It doesn't help that the world is slowly falling apart. Drugs, alcohol and guns are needed for survival.
Then the world she knows does collapse and we find that Grace might not be as broken as we thought. First comes Gideon and her strange love for him. While on the run, she finds Logan and Missy. Missy is the catalyst that helps Grace feel true love without question. However, can this last and can she keep Missy safe in this destroyed world.
A must read but it's not for the fainthearted. Graphic sex and language but I couldn't put it down!

Holy effing what?!?! It’s an epic journey! This is definitely not what I expected. Mind bending and maddening! Be ready to be wrecked, and I mean this in the best possible way. This is a twisted ride into a new age zombie apocalypse. Grace is our main character and boy, has she had a past. This makes her extremely likeable and relatable. The setting is intense from jump. There are drugs, partying, witchcraft, and zombies...I mean, what more could you ask for? But lets be real for a moment. Grace has experienced hell growing up. She has come to terms and feels she is stronger for it. Nothing slows down. The story is extremely action packed and kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. This is all about having your quality of life leveling up on a permanent f'ing opposite day with some giggly trips down memory lane. Grace is an amazingly flawed character that is continually growing emotionally and mentally. Gideon saved her and they have fallen in love. This author knows how to make the apocalypse romantic and STEAMY! As a matter of fact, all the characters that are introduced into this story are all fighting some sort of demon, their own apocalypse. I was a mess reading this....but it was totally, absolutely worth it. Don't let this discourage you. Once I hit this bump in the road the story just got better and better. I felt like I was right there and her shoes. This is an epic page turner and has made it to the top of my favorite reads. I. Can. Not. Wait. for the sequel. Bring it on! I am so ready! I absolutely could not put this down. So many plot twists! This series has made it to my top favorite, ever. If you like beautifully flawed characters with intense, action packed, and HAWT plots then you will love this just like I do. This author! SMH….LOL! I AM HOOKED! THIS IS MY ADDICTION! This series is taking it to the next level.

Ms. Rozelle is one of my favorite authors, so when I was offered a chance to read this book early for a review-I jumped on it!! Normally I am a YA girl but I have to say this is a well written NA book. The content is deep and disturbing at times but shows the raw honesty of a character who had been through some unimaginable circumstances and is trying to figure out who she is and how she fits in the world. Throw in this fantasy world where zombies have been made-makes for a story you can't stop reading!!! I love dystopian genre and not normally a zombie person but the way these zombies are created makes you wonder if something like this could really happen! Of course I'm always a sucker for a love story! I can't wait to see where the story leads in the next book!!
