Breaking Shadows

Rate this book
Quinn Sanders has been hiding from her past for longer than she would care to admit. Her life revolves around A Place to Hope, but recently someone has been preying on the kids who visit the center, someone who thinks none of the kids will be missed. No longer content to sit back, only able to watch from the sidelines, she jumps at the chance to help a young girl in need when the opportunity arises. No matter the cost to her own safety. Once again, Ethan Vanderbilt’s life has been uprooted. Now that his sister has found her happily ever after, it’s his turn to find love, because the consummate player is tired of playing the field; he wants someone to come home to and that someone is Quinn Sanders. When the woman he wants more than any other gets caught up in a human trafficking investigation, he will do everything in his power to keep her safe. When Quinn’s past and present collide, can she finally outrun the shadows and straight into the arms of the man of her dreams? This is book two of the Darkness Falls Series. While it is considered a standalone there are spoilers for book one, In the Night. For your reading pleasure, you should start with book one.

I'm really sorry to give such a low rating to a book that denounce sexual slavery, but I had so many problems with the heroine!!!

I understand that she has been abused and she's in hiding, but she's sooooo stupid!!!!

She knows that what she hides can help solve the case, but she doesn't want to tell! I understand that she wants to keep her past secret from the general population, but even when she's in love and trusts the hero she tells one secret and then another and then another... If she told all together, many things could have been solved with less danger and hurt!

She also acts all "nobody cann accept me or love me because I'm dirty", but she herself admits that her best friend (the heroine from book #1) found love even if she was a victim too!
But, at the same time, she thinks of herself as a strong and indipendent woman....

Too many inconsistencies in her character make me want to slap her and tell her to take her head out of her *ss!

The hero was better, but he was so besotted that at the first shudder/tear/stiffening of the heroine he just soothed her like "don't worry, it's OK, you'll tell me when you're ready" etc. even when he knew that what she could tell could be used to solve the case!

So, I'm really, really sorry, but this one was weak....

This author has a knack of pulling you into her books with heartbreaking opening scenes that hook you into the story until the final page.

The first book in this series was shocking with the depravity of the killer and had an ending that was skin crawling. Soo going into this one I was a little apprehensive on what I was going to read but while the subject matter was vile the skin scrawling was dialed down a bit (wink/smiling).

We were introduced to a large cast of characters in the first book. Ethan Vanderbilt is the homicide detective brother of Kara who went through hell in the first book and Quinn Sanders is the victim advocate who runs A Place to Hope for victims of abuse for Kara. Quinn is also a woman we know has a painful history but one as readers haven't been privy to but that all changes in this book.

When young girls from her center start to go missing Quinn starts digging into their disappearance. She has no clue she is poking the head of a large child sex trafficking ring. After helping rescue one girl Quinn has made herself a target in more than one way – seems her present and past are about to collide in bad way. Ethan who has kept his feelings for Quinn to himself finally can't hide them anymore when it becomes clear Quinn's life is in danger. Along with the search for the girls and traffickers and slow reveal of Quinn's past – there is the side story of another character we met in the first book who is undercover with the traffickers and the introduction of a new character. I'm excited that they both will be getting their own books in the future..

I cannot recommend this series enough – fabulous writing and twisted story telling.

I was lucky enough to read this book after the author reached out to me. I hope the prospective reader will read this review fully before making any prejudgments on the book. I will give the book my thoughts, good and bad. Also, this review contains opinions that are my own and not the author’s. My thoughts will be different from your thoughts and just know that before reading the book.

DISCLAIMER: This book I have to give a disclaimer for. To any readers who read my blog or are interested in the book, please know that there is strong language and sexual themes in this book. I believe it not suitable for readers under the age of 18 and not suitable for anyone who is easily triggered by horrific events. I recommend you enter reading this book with that in mind and you know that some of the things in this story are disturbing. I would compare it to Game of Thrones. Like the first book, this one has dark themes. Please be aware, but don’t let it stop you from reading. It could make you see the world differently.

My Rating: I loved this book. I loved the plotline. I think that it shows the darkness of society and the terrible situations that one can go through. I think that the writing is superb and it just went up from the first book. It is not often that I fell in love with the second book even more than the first. I mentioned in the review I did on the first book that it is amazing, but I may not read it again right away. This book I will read again and again. I can already see myself finding more sections that I love that I missed the first time around. This book is 5 phenomenal stars. I absolutely cannot wait to read the third book, the fourth book, and whatever Melissa Sinclair is willing to write.

I hope this review helps you in making your next book choice. Happy reading!

SECONDARY DISCLAIMER: I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Loved it as much as the first. Quinn is an amazing person, and trying to do the right thing. She’s working at A Place to Hope. Her friend Kara Vanderbilt is working something, and she’s the one who created this special place. Quinn is working with every teen they comes through the doors to help them when some go missing. That’s where Ethan comes in. He’s a Detective now also helping with these missing kids. Ethan also has an inside informant someone from the precinct that wanted to go undercover and bring down someone so twisted.
Ethan knew Quinn was it for him, but he had to tread carefully with her. He knew that she was hiding something. When she and his sister had an accident he would stop st nothing to protect her.

See what happens and buy the book. I was lucky to get a copy of this book directly from Ms. Sinclair when I met her at a readers event. I was under no obligation to write this review. All thoughts are my own. In fact I’m ordering the next two books in this series.

I really liked In The Night so I had to read this one right away there are spoilers for the plot, so it would be best to read them in order. This one is about Kara’s brother, Ethan. I liked this one as much as the first. Again, dark and disturbing subject matter but I love a good happy ending.

This author knows how to bring the ending! Breaking Shadows is the second novel in the Darkness Falls series, and if you haven't read the first one, drop what you're doing and read it now!

This is the story of Quinn and Ethan, both of whom we met in the first book. Quinn is an abuse survivor and a counselor and victim advocate for abuse victims. She inadvertently gets caught up in a human trafficking ring right in her own backyard. Ethan is a cop and the brother of Kara, the heroine from the first novel.

This is a standalone novel, but it would be very beneficial to read the first book beforehand. Caleb and Kara, the couple from the first book, are heavily featured in this one, and their story is alluded to quite a bit. I loved it, highly recommend it, and can't wait for the next one!

Book 2 in the Darkness Falls Series. You don’t have to read book 1 in order to read this tale, but it will definitely help you appreciate the characters much more.
Ethan is a hunky cop with the rep for being a player, but that changes when Quinn enters his life. He’s a sweetheart with a protective side that makes it impossible not to fall in love with him.
Quinn is a therapist who feels the need to save girls like herself because of her own stunted past.
We are given several different viewpoints as we’re drawn into this criminal mystery that shows us a terrifying underworld that we sadly see in real life. Can you put the pieces together?

Fabulous

I loved this book. I laughed and cried. I have such compassion for these poor children who get their childhood so consciously taken from them. Thank you Melissa Sinclair for writing a book about a subject some people deal with by making believe it doesn't happen. I hope it makes everyone who read this book, regardless whether they gave it one star or five to open their eyes and their hearts to step up to see what they can do in their own little corner of the world to help with this ever growing problem. I know it has mine

This is book two in the series and once again I absolutely enjoyed this page turner. I found myself holding my breath a few times and reading a bit faster so I could find out what happened next. While some characters remained the same, we also met some new. I can’t wait to find out more about Harrison Black as I am very intrigued. There was some laugh out loud moments, as well as tears shed with a heavy heart at times. God bless those who actually work to bring down traffickers in real life. I can’t wait for the next book! Keep them coming!

Wake up America

This was a story based around human trafficking of young children. It makes you realize how it can be going on in the city where you live and how pillars of the community may succumb to "looking the other way" because money is more important to them that the life of a child. In addition it also emphasizes the difficulty in identifying them and closing them down. Very well done, excellent plot.

I enjoyed the first book in this series so much I was a little nervous about reading the second one, but I needn't have been. It easily lived up to the first book and once again was a can't put it down sort of book that deserves the five stars I gave it. Keep on writing, Melissa Sinclair - I will keep on reading your books!!!

Human trafficking

I love the (Darkness Falls Book 1 and 2). I was captivated with both books. We can't even imagine things like this going on, but they do and it is horrible. But this book was amazing. I look forward to reading more books by Melissa Sinclair. I cried, I laughed and I fell in love even through the horror. Thank you. 😀💖💖

A realistic look at the sex trafficking industry which is gut wrenchingly, horrifying to imagine. Had equal parts true crime and romance.. can’t wait to get the next in the series.

I can count on less than one hand the number of authors I trust to get me through what, to me, is a difficult book, but Melissa Sinclair has been added to that list. Parts of this book are so dark that I had to stop reading just to be able to breathe. But the levity is there also. This book pulls no punches and you’ll get that punch right in the heart. Masterful storytelling makes it a must read after book 1, In the Night. If you only read one page of this book it has to be the one after the Epilogue. Read it, memorize it, be aware, and live it daily.
