Spook Mortensen has one rule when it comes to relationships: just say no. He has his reasons. Good reasons. His policy of total abstinence has kept him out of trouble for years. Sex ought to be the last thing on his mind, but whenever go-getting sound engineer Allegra Hutton shows up, she doesn’t just hijack his libido, she downright screws with it. The only way to deal with her is to tie her up.
Alle realises she’s upsetting Spook’s rhythm, but she’s under no illusion that he’s the right top to warm her bottom.
Deep dive into the world of Black Halo with enigmatic rhythm guitarist, Spook Mortensen, and the fiery red-head who pushes his limits…
Madelynne Ellis is a New York Times & USA Today bestselling author of over 50 erotic romance novels.
Madelynne lives in the UK, not far from the Welsh border with her partner, family, & assorted pets. She is currently sipping rapidly cooling decaf coffee, listening to loud music, & indulging her obsession for tattooed bad boys.
I've been looking forward to this book for a while as I'm a big fan of Madelynne's series about rock band Black Halo. You don't need to have read the other books to be able to follow the storyline, but I would encourage you to try them as they are fantastic. The characters in these books are insanely sexy, larger then life rock gods and gorgeous, feisty rock chicks. Resistor is a great read - it's sexy, fun and emotional.
Guitarist Spook has been celibate for seven years, but he can't get sound engineer Alle out of his head. When he meets her again the attraction is still mutual but Alle can't convince him to give their relationship a chance. Can she find out why Spook avoids sex and can she change his mind?
This was a great story, the distress that Spook went through made for emotional reading but this was balanced out by the steamy sex scenes. Spook is one of my all time favourite characters, he's as hot as hell but he's a real enigma with dark secrets and a painful past. Alle and Spook's story continues in the next book, which I hope is out soon as I can't wait to read it! Resistor is definitely worth five stars.
OK, so now for the highlights! The series is made up of rock-star bad-asses and their bad-ass, sassy chics! This is the story of Spook. Now Spook has been sexless for like 6 or 7 years (i know, #insanity) BUT, Alle is about to change all that. It's gonna be a challenge and it isn't going to be easy, but it will SO be worth it in the end! Be prepared, because Spook's celibacy is NOT just because he decided one day to not have sex. NO, it's emotional and gripping and VERY heart-wrenching!

OK so perhaps it's my fault for not noticing this was included in an anthology, which likely means it's a shorter story. Or perhaps it's my fault for not noticing it was only 98 pages long. Or, since I didn't visit GR before buying or reading it, I didn't know it was a point-five. I was just excited for another Black Halo story. :-/ I probably wouldn't have spent $3 on 100 pages had I known. And maybe I wouldn't have expected a full story. Even if it is a point-five. I just really thought more would happen. And now I'm even *less* happy with how book 2 ended because I'm still waiting for info on Ash. For the positive: it was well-written. Sadly, I think that's the only positive. We still don't know why Spook doesn't have sex. He's apparently scared of his propensity to give pain, but we still don't know why... only that something (someone?) devastated him eight years ago. But as with #2, this one ended abruptly. Again, I was flipping pages back and forth to make sure I hadn't missed anything. It was like a vignette where nothing was really resolved (except that he'd try with Allegra) and it just ended. Those are are the reasons for my "It was OK" rating. It was just OK for me.
WOW!! If you are looking for an unbelievably hot read, this is it. I haven’t read any of the other Black Halo books yet, but believe me that is going to change NOW. I am hooked on this series and can’t wait to start the venture with this rock group. They sure sound like quite the bunch. I have to know what the deal is with Ash and Xane sounds like a wild ride himself. Back to this particular book though the story of Spook and Alle was even endearing...in a smutty way. No matter how hard Spook tried to push Alle away, she would come back and would keep pushing for more. She doesn’t understand the reluctance that he has and for that fact neither do I. It is because of this that Resistor has me hooked on the Black Halo series. I have so many questions and can’t wait to find out some of the answers to them. It doesn’t hurt that the hotness is turned up to high either. This was a very fast read and had me wanting for more. ARC provided by NetGalley for an honest review.
I didn't want my confirmed love for Madelynne Ellis's writing prejudice me, so when I received Resistor I tried very hard to read it as though I'd not been a fan of her Black Halo books for ages.
Firstly, although you would obviously get a lot more background on Spook, our main character, if you had read the others in the series, it really isn't necessary as this book will stand alone. Poor Spook, a gorgeously handsome and talented musician, is tormented by his constant longing to make more of his previous brief acquaintance with sound engineer Allegra. The main problem is that having been celibate for seven years - with good reason - Spook is desperate not to give into temptation and "ruin" his life. Allegra however, is convinced that some hot schmexy action will be very good for both of them and pulls out all the stops to seduce a man who's got under her skin like no-one before.
Will it all end in tears? Or a happy ever after? Well I know, because I read it. I suggest you do the same.
Resistor is one book in the boxed set Mastered 2: Ten Tales of Sensual Surrender. I am greedily working my way through the rest and am thoroughly enjoying them all.
The story is not standalone and continuities in another book. Its a really quick short erotic read. So if you want something dirty and forbidden, the book is for you. So we have Spook who is sworn to celibacy and does not have sex does not get a hard on. But all is change when in his life come Alle. A determined woman who will not take no for an answer and begins to brake walls which were built years ago. Story is interesting and hot. There are pretty naughty and panty dropping scenes. I'm sorry that is in two parts so yes you end up with cliffhanger.

Spook and Allie past meets the present but will Spook who has denied what he wants and can Allie bring him the pleasure he wants but denies himself . and can he let the past go whatever it may be and will Allie be the woman who opens him to the point where he can let the past be in the past or will he push her away and his wants and desires . this is part of the Mastered 2 box set never read from this author before now i want to read more from this series . book comes out on its own come may
This book was short. And it's part of a series. But it's the only one I have read so far, and I understood what was going on. Spook & Alle can easily piss you off with the ba k and forth. Personally I loved it. Spook has something in his past to keep him from getting close to Alle. & Alle is very pushy with Spook. She's trying to get him to open up while also beggimg to be ravished. I'm hoping more will come from this story. I am dieing to see where things go with them.
Spook sure gets riled when you egg him on, "I know how to eff you,” he snarled right up against her turned cheek . “I don’t need any lessons on how to make you come." I really liked Spook, he has discipline but I'm not sure from what. I liked how he was with his girl, "I do. ” He laughed around another yawn. “Orgasms are hard work. I might need stamina lessons. Eff knows how Xane manages to come five times a day and not fall over." I can't wait to see how his story plays out in the next book.
I always enjoy Black Halo amd Xane is up to his little tricks. Spook has a past as we realize all the band does. Having read the previous in this series it is a tease I tell you!! Still it was quick and a good read. The sparks that fly when these two get together! I thoroughly enjoyed it and will read the rest in this series! Have at it you will not be disappointed.
I received this ARC from the publisher via Net Galley for my honest review. Thank You!
Allegra Hutton was madly in love with Spook Mortensen. He could give her the kink she craved. Besides Spook was handsome and every girls dream. Spook though had issues. He had some past demons that he just could not shake. Due to his demons he felt he could not trust or be in a relationship. Could he get past his and find happiness with Alle?
I have this love/hate thing with this series but I can't seem to NOT read the books so obviously something's working! lol This one was a good preview into the conundrum that is Spook. What about Alle appeals to him? I STILL don't know but I sure can't wait to find out!
2.5 stars. Ugh, what is it about these shorts with Spook that just kinda fail for me? I like him so much in other books, but in this one, as in Remastered, he just seems to lack the “calm, cool and collected” persona that makes him so wonderful in the other books.
In this one, Spook and Xane are at an awards show where Alle turns up again – giving them an award for their music. Spook has somewhat ghosted her but after her amazing sound edit on their last song, Xane wants to work with her again. In fact, everyone wants this but Spook, making him the “resistor”. But this time Xane learns what’s going on and encourages Spook to do something about his attraction. Meanwhile, Alle isn’t letting go so easily either…
Tbh, I found more than one scene in this book kinda rape-y. Like, even if he’s attracted, Spook doesn’t want to have sex, can we all just honor that?? Not really, in this story.
If you can get past that, Spook and Alle actually do make some progress in their relationship, giving readers a legitimately hot scene once Spook decides to go for it. So it’s a setup for what’s to come.
One final thought; Xane and Spook have a somewhat “more than just friends” vibe, but not completely. I don’t know what Ellis is trying for here? Is Spook super tight with Ash, or with Xane? Or with both, or neither? I’m a little confused as to the energy between Spook and his fellow band members. Certainly the curiosity will keep me reading, if nothing else.

First I have to say that I haven't read any other books of this series(which I definetly will change). But the blurb sounded so good that I just needed to read this book.
We all know these books in which the man has a horrible past, filled with secrets who change who the men are. Often they use sex with a woman to get rid of everything while the woman is the shy one who needs to get use to it. A woman who perhaps even is frightened at first...
This wasn't the case with this book! It was so refreshing that I badly crave for the other books!
At first it was a little bit strange as the female protgonist, Alle, is such a stong character who stands for what she wants and who isn't afraid to show what she wants. There were just some scenes during which it was, in my opinion, a little bit too much(f.e. when she talked with Spook's best friend about what happened with her shirt which is not only destroyed, but also "wet" if you know what I mean) ;) Not the fact that she talked about her sex-life. More about the fact that Spook is important to her and she knows that he has a serious problem with this topic.Even when you are that open-minded, you don't talk about it when the person is important to you. But perhaps it was just the fact that he is the one pushing him to her or just because he is the best friend who doesn't want to see his friend suffering anymore.
It is only a short book which means it's not possilke to put a badass long story into it(which is for sure done in the others). But within this pages, Madelynne Ellis really was able to get my attention as normally, the male in these kind of books isn't the one who "says no".
In this book two alphas crash into each other! One who is an alpha but tries to hide it because something horrible happened 6 years ago. And one who wants to find out why and who wants to change him to live out what they both crave for...
I really want to know how this story is going to develop!
Resistor, Black Halo 2.5 , Madelynne Ellis Review from Jeannie Zelos book reviews Genre: Romance, Erotica Well, I love the Black Halo series and Madelynne’s writing, and was eager to read this. sadly its not the usual five star read for me as it’s very short – just 1435 kindle locations....When i was searching for info I couldn’t find the “novella” tag but I’m sure by publication that will be there. If like me you don’t really get on with sort reads take note! So it’s Spook’s story – he’s always intrigued me, lives up to his name being like a kind of ghost, always around, always watching but rarely actually present, and when it comes to sex he’s definitely a voyeur only with his albums of erotic images. I was really looking forward to knowing what was behind his somewhat strange behaviour but we still don’t get the full story here. I want to know what it was that happened eight years ago – and I’m having to wait for part two to find out. Still, the brevity of the book means info is restricted, and this part concentrates on Spook meeting up once more with Allegra – Alle. They had a very short and sensual fling within his brief a few months back, which has stressed him ever since. Now she looks to be working with the group for some time, and he just doesn’t know if he’ll crack under the pressure seeing her has on him. Alle is confused, she thought they had something special, enjoyed what they did, and waited for him to call – but in vain. This time she’s determined to pin him down. I know she’s supposed to be this tough girl in a man’s world, but I found her a bit aggressive TBH, pursuing Spook when it was clear it distressed him. I guess that’s what she felt she had to do, but I didn’t like it and it felt as though when she and Spook were together he was kind of forced into it – and I don’t like that. Its no good rationalising that his body was saying yes, so ignoring his mind....still, I really need to read the next part and hopefully all will come clear. As it is it just feels unfinished to me, and though I’ve loved all the BH books so far this is a three for me. Stars: Three, its a hot and sensual read but just feels unfinished to me. Resistor by Madelynne Ellis made me a new fan of the Black Halo Series. I have not read the series before but I love rock star romance novels. After reading Resistor, I am now going to have to read the rest of the series before any new releases come out. This novella was great!
Resistor is about Spook Mortenson, a rock star on a self inflicted policy of total abstinence for the last seven years, and Allegra Hutton, a sound engineer that appears to be Spook’s downfall. These two meet again in this novella after not having spoken or seen each other for several months and the chemistry is still electric. The more Alle pushes, the more Spook retreats.
This novella had a great storyline and sets the reader up perfectly for the full length novel that is yet to be released. The characters are great in this book and the dynamics between them is fantastic. Each character brings something different to the story and made for a great read.
Having not read anything else in the series, I felt like I was missing a few things but not enough to keep myself from understanding what was happening. I am definitely sold on this series and will have to reread this novella after I read the first books so I can fill in the gaps.
I received this book as an ARC from Net Galley for my honest review
Spook Mortensen believes that abstinence is the best policy but if there was one woman that could have him questioning all of his rules it is Allegra Hutton.
Allegra Hutton is the sound engineer for Spooks band and she has one thing that she wants....Spook Mortensen
Will Allegra Hutton be the one to make Spook break all of his rules? Read and find out!
This is actually the second time I have read this book I received it as an ARC from Net Galley as apart of a box set "Mastered 2: Ten Tales of Sensual Surrender"
First I want to say that this is a very good book. This book has sooo much heat in the bedroom that it can share it with a couple of other books, that lack the right amount of heat to catch my attention, and still be scorchingly hot.
But I must say that there was all this build up and frustration for the couple, that lead to frustration for me, because as woman who wants all of that drama.
I loved the story, I was reading it like a maniac and clearly Ellis picked the perfect name for the title because he was indeed the Resistor. He resisted to the point that if he had a theme song that would play when he walked into the room, it would be Katy Perry "Hot and Cold".
Overall still a great story, I just found the next book in the series so like the bookaholic I am going to read that one asap, I need to know more NOW. Great job Madelynne Ellis
Resistor by Madelynne Ellis was a quick read that had me left wanting more. It was hot and I really enjoyed the scenes with Spook and Xane (and of course the ones with Spook and Allegra). :)
This novella is about Spook Mortensen and Allegra Hutton. Spook has remained celibate for over seven years, however, the bold and determined Allegra tempts him to break his no sex policy. He fights his desires to be with Alle throughout the novella, and when the possibility of Alle working as sound engineer for their album in Sweden arises he is more determined to keep his distance.
Alle and Spook are hot together and sparks fly between them. Both want to be with the other but Spook's resistance stops them. Luckily, Alle is not a quitter and keeps on pushing.
I enjoyed this novella. Sad it ends in a cliffhanger, but happy that Spook and Alle's story will continue in another book, Replay.
Overall, Resistor was a great read that I recommend. Hope their next book comes out soon because I'm eager to find out more.
(Thanks to Madelynne Ellis, CrushStar Multimedia LLC, and NetGalley for the chance to read Resistor for an honest review.)
I really tried to get into this story. In the beginning, there were a lot of questions running through my mind. I wanted to understand what made Spook tick--why he avoided sex and why he's so insistent on avoiding Alle even though he's clearly as attracted to her as she is to him. Nothing was explained, nothing was referred to or implied. I just kept getting more and more frustrated with the almost-not-quite relationship between Spook and Alle because I had no clue what was happening. It got to the point where it was painful to read, but I pushed through, skimming through a lot of it to see if I would be given some sort of explanation. When I hit the end, I had to do a double take because there was no resolution or anything. It didn't even feel like a HFN. It's possible that given this book is part of a series that there will be a clearer view of Spook's deal eventually (or at least I hope), but as of right now I have no interest in struggling through to find it.
**ARC provided by publisher for honest review*** Main Characters: Alle&Spook HEA: Insta-Love: not exactly Alpha-ness: 2, only in bed Romance: 3 Love Story: hmmm Angst: More like questions Worth the read? I think so Stand Alone: NO Part of a series? Yes, Black Halo Was it well written? Yes. However, I felt like I came in to a movie after it had already started and only got a glimpse, I would not consider this a stand-alone. Since it was an ARC, I will let that piece go and just say that within the covers of this you had a very over eager female, and a very self-conscious male. I personally would prefer the female to not be sooo eager and the make to do more chasing/taking, but again since it was a piece to a bigger puzzle you can’t really linger on that. I am intrigued to see more of Spook. Why is he keeping this girl at arms length? What is his back story? And what’s up with Xane, he seems like a interesting read. I will have to read the series to give you more I think.
***ARC through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review***
Guess I should've paid attention to the .5 in this. I would not classify this as a novella as it kind of dropped you in on a situation and did not show you a way out.
It reads more like an excerpt (albeit a 7 or 8 chapter excerpt) from a bigger novel - which I hope will materialize. It starts as Alle and Spook meet again after a mutually pleasurable but not entirely satisfactory encounter. She wants more and he wants to stay away for reasons not fully explained/ What follows next is Alle trying to and succeeding in getting into Spooks pants (and HOW) and how he returns the favor - really hot (sometimes disturbing) scenes.
Want a really hot scene to read under the covers tonight? This is the one for you. Looking for a full-fledged, romantic, fully developed story? Uh, not so much!
Fantastic. I love the Black Halo books. All of the characters are completely compelling and so, so hot. This book is the continuation of Spook and Allegra's story that was in the Mastered anthology, which is worth picking up for that book alone. In this story Spook is resisting his attraction to Allegra while she is pushing him to acknowledge their connection. Spook is trying to continue his celibacy which he adheres to for some mysterious reason that he has apparently only shared with Xane. With sex obsessed Xane acting as Alle's fairy godmother Spook hasn't a hope of resisting her. Can't wait for the next instalment.
I captive this book a decent rating because it is incomplete. I downloaded Remastered a as a free read, it was only 66 pages. I actually paid for this one and it was short and just cut off in the middle of a scene. This series Rock Hard/Black Halo has been a mess. I like the stories, but the sequence and lengths are a nightmare. I am done with it. Maybe in few years she will release the rest of this book and finish the series and I can check them out from my digital public library. But I will not pay to read books from this author again. Too bad, Madelynne just lost a fan!
"Resistor," by Madelynne Ellis, is 2.5 in the Black Halo Series. It's short, 154 pages, and starts the story of Spook and Alle, which will be continued in "Replay." I enjoy the Black Halo characters and books, so this was a must read for me. Unfortunately, I was disappointed it wasn't as informative about Spook's past as I'd hoped. It was mostly him struggling with the idea of becoming involved with Alle and wasn't that interesting.
I really didn't like Resistor. The guy in this book played with the woman sexually, but would not do anymore. It was really irritating the crap he was pulling with her because he wouldn't give her a reason why either. I just did not like this character. He was being a jerk. I wanted her to go and find someone else to love. There is also a cliffhanger ending.
I received an ARC of this book from the publisher and Netgalley for an honest review.
This may be short but it's more spicy than sweet. Rocker Spook has some hang ups when it comes to sex. Like a seven year hiatus. Alle broke down his walls before and she is looking for a way back in again. Spook is blessed with a best friend that refuses to let him hide from what Alle wants to give.
Thanks to the author for a copy to read and review.
F*@K me why couldn't this be a longer book instead of a novella! I want so much more! I love Spook, scenes were thermonuclear for me. Freaking loved it. They make such a great pair, ugh. Allegra needs to push him hard! Five stars of entertainment.
