Teen Wolf Stiles x Derek

January seventh. Seven days since the start of 2015, and seven days since his father’s death.

The bastard, he thinks bitterly. The past year Derek Hale had made it blatantly obvious that he hated his scrawny guts, taking every given opportunity to shove him up against a wall, growl threats in his ears and roll his eyes whenever he stepped into the room, muttering some snide comment about how spastic or idiotic he was.

So why did he fucking volunteer to take him in?

This was well developed and slow-moving (appropriately slow-moving, considering the subject matter and the theme of overcoming grief) and just really, really sweet. The artwork is great too, and there's so much of it that my e-reader ran out of storage space and I had to read the last two chapters on AO3 so I could see the pretty, pretty pictures. You can really see all the time and care that went into this fanfic.

As a side note, though, I really didn't have time for a 200,000 page side-quest this week to go read the companion piece in the middle of this one where it was recommended. I don't think it dulled my enjoyment any. If it's anything like this was, I'll come back to it in a week or two when I have more time.

Tragicznie nudne, nierealistyczne i kiepsko napisane. Jedyne, co mi się podobało, to ilustracje do tej historii.

Not only is this an emotionally rich fic with great characterization, but it's lavishly illustrated (and in several parts, even told) with colorful, vibrant art — also made by the multi-talented author! — which often feels 3-D and which even managed to satisfy portrait-uber-picky me at least 90% of the time. (I actually downloaded a few of the pics.)

N.b., it is in some ways an AU, even disregarding later-seasons' developments. The explanation of the Hale fire is completely Kate-Argent-less, for example.

There is some misused vocabulary and a handful of homonym errors, plus I think I caught one or two 'verse-internal minor consistency errors here and/or in its side stories, but overall the writing quality is high, and the message is heart-warming.

P.S., I decided to include "low-conflict" among the shelves I put it on, because it's mainly about human (and, well, you know, werewolf) drama and day-to-day, but be aware that there is at least one section involving "current" violence, and the whole premise is based on a tragic and gory incident (two, counting Derek's own fire-scarred backstory) which may require some readers to skip some of the illustrations.

This is one of the best fanfics I've read in a long time. I love how it's the same world we know and love, but with a unique spin on it, and I love the in depth back story to read around it. There were one or two flaws, such as at times it was difficult to fire out which perspective it was in, like it alternated, but it also slipped into omniscient at times and it confused things a little, but mostly this was so well-written, carefully thought-out, and I loved every second I spent devouring it. I would like to know what happened to the lion fish, though, and whether or not it changed how Derek felt about his uncle, like if it helped forgive him for his own sake rather than for Peter's. But I think I'll no doubt be reading this again at some point because it was beautiful.

Oh how I wish I could've reviewed it the day I read this fic. I forgot a lot now cause it's been almost a month but what I did not forget is the storyline, the way this fic deals with the aspects of overcoming grief- it was quite relatable and the illustrations. They make this story all the better. Some serious thought has been put into the fic and I appreciate the author's efforts. Not to mention, this is the one that got me into Sterek fics.

I wanted to read this such a long time ago and then completely forgot about it, because real life kick*d my a*s. It's so beautiful and the illustrations are out of this world.

I thought I loved Sterek as a thing, but then not really. It was too weird for me. I loved the writing, though!! The author did great. It made me re-watch Teen Wolf 😁

cover

made a cover from one of the great illustrations in this book, so you get an impression.

2.8 stars

I really liked the story that is being told. But over all there are a lot of issues, which made it somewhat annoying in parts or confusing.

How Derek is characterized and over all development was beautifully done. Also Stile healing process was nicely handled. Personally I did not like him to be such a massiv klutz, like nearly unable to manage on his own.

The slow build up and the little things made this very real and believable. All the feels there. But I kinda not got the romance part of the story. You see how they heal and grow to love each other - find a home. But to me that does not equate in romantic love and how that came about was not quite clear to me. Told but not shown.

I have some trouble with this being canon compliant and not at the same time. You just know the back story which you don't. The non-compliances are the little big things, which kind of drag me out of the story itself. Like Peter's different role, which is not really explained at all. I'm totally fine with going off course at some point, kinda like those turns, but I want to be in the know then. So this is kind of a bummer for me. If you don't know the series or read any canon compliant Sterek, you'll probably have no issues here. But since it is a fanfic not a self-sufficient novel, this could have been handled better.

I had one major issue with anachronism. I have never been to California and I don't really know how harsh a winter would be. But you cannot expect me to believe that when a pond freezes over in Dezember, that in February you can go out taking naps in the woods after a rain in a hoody. Also farmers market would be with seasonal produce, right. The description of the market is beautiful but it sounds like spring or even summer. Season appropriate descriptions were not a thing in this one.

Spelling because is an issue as well.

My pet peeve was unfortunately also present: the teen. Why should you refer to Stiles like that? But it was mostly in the first chapters and got better.

Overall my misgivings are not so bad but accumulated like that does take a bit of joy out of the reading. It's just not as good as it good be. With a strong beta-read this could be 4 or 5 stars.

And since the illustrations are a major part of the whole, they get also a part in the review. The artist is really talented and all the picture just capture the scences, with all the emotions. Very fitting. Though in some of the drawings the angles/proportions are bit off, when she apparently didn't have any stills or models for some of the poses.

She is currently working on a novelization of the story with original characters, be sure to look out for that. Maybe all the flaws will straightened out and then it will a great book.
